‘Pearl was the guiding light behind this project’

BudeLife

fast and I didn’t realise how quickly it would all take off. It’s been a steep learning curve and we’ve seen over 70 young people already coming to some of our sessions.’

Rosie pictured far right with her team at Pearl Exchange

Bude Life caught up with Rose Bamford who set up ‘The Pearl Exchange’ in Bude following the death of her teenage daughter. Within the space of just a few years, Rose who lives in Crackington Haven has faced the personal tragedy of losing her daughter Pearl at the age of 19, after she took her own life. Recognising that Bude had very little to offer for young people, she wanted to do something about it. Rose told us ‘My daughter Pearl had eating issues and generally struggled to cope with life and there just wasn’t a safety net or any place of support for her. If you meet a friend, where do they go and hangout – there’s nowhere. Everyone has realised during the pandemic this massive need in mental health. Nobody was addressing it for our young people and I simply had to do something.’ It was then that Rose started holding some fundraising dinners so that she could get going with her idea of starting up a project for young people. She said ‘It’s all happened so

The Pearl Exchange was set up to improve the lives of 18-30 year olds in the Bude area through creative practices and cultural experiences. They support young adults through counselling and wellbeing activities and facilitate connections that lead to work and life opportunities. Their focus is very much on the creative arts as well as providing a free professional counselling service for mental health support. They also host a number of clubs and collectives including photography, film, book and Jam Nights as well as cold water swimming. Rose told us ‘Our programme is developing all the time with parent support groups on Tuesdays, hot desk provision for 18-30s on Wednesdays and art days on Fridays. We’re not a drop-in centre, but people need to check our website and book in as our programme changes.’ Rose was humble in her reflection on the quick success of The Pearl Exchange project. She said ‘I hope my daughter Pearl would have loved it. She’s been the guiding light for all of this. What would have got her out of bed, what would have got her out of her room, what would have made her enjoy herself? She would have wanted somewhere safe, cool, vibrant, warm and encouraging.’ Rose has certainly delivered on all those counts and more - and has put The Pearl Exchange firmly on the map. Both the town and our young people have been blessed by her determination to change things for the better in our town. www.budelife.co.uk 05

Record numbers flock to Bude Sea Pool It’s been a busy summer everywhere around Bude, but for the Friends of Bude Sea Pool, they’ve never had so many people using its fantastic facility. Membership, IT and PR Manager Josie Pizer of Bude Sea Pool told Bude Life ‘ We’ve been bowled over by how many people are coming to grace our terraces and the water this summer. On Sunday 18th July, the Pool hit record numbers with 1,419 people coming down at some point during the day, and with just under half taking a dip.’ Bude Sea Pool is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, with many locals using it right throughout the year – even when the water temperature drops to around 4 degrees. Josie said ‘ How busy it is depends on the weekends, the weather and, of course, the holidays. The Pool’s very busiest days see on average around

1,000 people coming each day. Don’t let that put you off though, there’s plenty of room for everyone throughout the day and most days it isn’t that busy by any stretch.’ This autumn, Friends of Bude Sea Pool (FoBSP) will be hosting two very special fundraising events to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of its taking over the management of Bude Sea Pool on behalf of the community in Bude and surrounding the Pool. The Spot the Artist Exhibition and Auction will be held from 27th-29th October at the Falcon Hotel. For more information on these events, visit: www.budeseapool.org/news

significant rise in bookings across the County that take us deep into November.

With hotels, b&b’s, caravan parks, campsites and holiday apartments seeing record numbers of bookings this summer, the tourist ‘leisure pound’ has been a welcome bonus to many local businesses in the area. Chief Executive Malcolm Bell of Visit Cornwall told Bude Life ‘We’ve seen an estimated 10% to 15% increase in visitors to Bude this year. This is an exceptional if not unique year with travel restrictions increasing the number of people wanting to holiday in the UK, combined with the need for visitors to plan and book ahead to ensure a good experience. Freedom on wheels Campervan and motorhome sales soar in record year for ‘accommodation on wheels’purchases.

It can only be described as a thing of great beauty, to see a campervan parked up with its occupants poised in pole position, champagne glass in hand, to experience one of Widemouth Bay’s spectacular sunsets. For UK dealers of any type of accommodation on wheels since the pandemic, interest has soared, prices have risen, but still sales have rocketed making it the most lucrative year for sellers.

Big Wave Campers located just outside of Bude have also seen a rise in interest having sold 90 of their vehicles in the space of a month. Sales Manager at Big Wave Campers, Rees Hughes told Bude Life ‘Interest has been so high, we’ve sold over 400 vehicles already this year and still demand remains high. People have been stuck in their homes for too long during the pandemic and they simply want some new freedom to get out and about – they want a life!’ This ‘life on wheels’ doesn’t come cheap though. If potential buyers are hoping to grab a campervan or motorhome bargain this year, they may have arrived at the game just a bit too late – or for the time being at least! Poundstock resident, Steve Pitcher, was one of the many who couldn’t resist the temptation to purchase his first VW Campervan. He told Bude Life ‘We’ve been dreaming of getting one for ages, but just needed to get the money together as they’re obviously not cheap. We absolutely love it, particularly living by the sea, so get to enjoy it all year round. To read the full story, visit www.budelife.co.uk

‘I grew too many leeks...

...in my garden so decided to sell some – it all went crazy from there’ Bude Life caught up with Kim Gouldson who runs ‘All the P’s Market and Tea Garden’ in Stratton and she shares how her business blossomed during the pandemic from just small beginnings. As a Stratton resident for over 37 years, Kim is proud of the town she lives in. ‘I absolutely love Bude’, a beaming Kim told us sitting in her beautifully maintained gardens. ‘The town means everything to me and I’m so grateful that I’ve had an opportunity to live here.’ With an interest in gardening, Kim first opened up ‘All the P’s’ after she mistakenly grew too much produce. Kim told Bude Life ‘It was at the start of the pandemic that I decided to sell a few bits of veg at the bottom of my garden. I grew too many leeks so decided to sell some – it all went crazy from there. In April this year, Kim extended her operation, opening a beautiful Tea Room with all profits (over £4k in total) being given to local charities including Bude Sea Pool. Run by a team of volunteers, Kim has over 4.5 acres of stunning outdoor space which consists of 2 poly tunnels growing everything from salad crops, edible flowers, winter vegetables, brassicas, squash and pick your own pumpkins for kids. There are also bee hives, free range

chickens and plenty of other wildlife that make this the perfect place to visit. Kim said ‘Most of our visitors are local people and it’s great that people enjoy coming here.’ Unfortunately, we are only renting this property and we have to give it all up in 2023. We’ve put all the gardens in here and have worked so hard to make it what it is. We’re so sad that we have got to leave, but we knew that we would have to go at some point. We are desperate to find something similar as we’re so keen to continue doing what we’ve done here’. Kim has the additional challenge of finding somewhere suitable for her husband Allan who has Motor Neurone Disease (MND). She told us ‘My husband was only given one year to live and that was over 7 years ago now. We bought him a road wheelchair which allows him to get around the garden. He’s at his happiest when he’s spending time outside with his 9 grandchildren.’ Kim is hopeful about the future and with her focus firmly placed on both her family and continuing to help others through her charity support. Maybe someone in our special community knows of somewhere suitable, where their dream of continuing their business and charity can continue. To read the full story, visit www.budelife.co.uk

Protecting our streets at night Bude Life caught up with the Street Pastors Team who patrol Bude Town Centre, when the sun goes down and the busy night life kicks in.

Kev Hogarth told Bude Life ‘Within just three months of us starting out, police reported a 29% drop in anti social incidents which quickly grew the respect of the local police. We work extremely well together and they’ve come to rely on us and hopefully we’ve also made their job just a bit more manageable. The volunteer team set out onto the streets at 9pm and their shift is rarely over until 3.30am. Kev said ‘When we first started out, we had just 5 CCTV cameras, but the town now has 18 cameras which makes a big difference as we’re all able to keep track of what’s happening and can respond more quickly when needed.’

W

hen the high street shops close and the darkness descends on Bude, a team of volunteers affectionately known as the Street Pastors, hit Bude Town Centre to help support people who might get into difficulties on a weekend evening. One of the founding volunteers, Kev Hogarth was behind the birth of Street Pastors which has been running in the town for over 11 years. The team who are joined up with the police and CCTV officers via radios, respond to antisocial incidents, missing persons, people hurt in incidents or victims of theft – and they’re also there to provide friendly support or a kind word which might be needed and help to prevent potential situations from escalating.

‘We’ve had serious first aid incidents where we’ve managed to get 999 emergency services out to people quickly which can sometimes be a life and death situation. When we’ve attended the victim, we’ve often been able to help with taking statements which have helped with court situations too. We’re only there for peoples good. We’re just on the streets to care for people if they need us. It’s hard to know how many bad situations we’ve been able to prevent from happening because of our presence. Because we’ve been here so long now, people know us and understand that we’re there to help them if they ever need it.’ The Bude Pastors are non-denominational and their team are made up of local Christian churches in the area who have a passion for keeping our streets safe at night. Kev said ‘We love Bude and we love people; we also have faith that situations can change for the better and this job is a real privilege. We really want the best for Bude and we want the town to continue being a safer place – and long may that continue, when I’m eventually gone.’ To find out more about the work of the Street Pastors including ways to financially support them, visit their facebook page at www.facebook.com/BudeStreetPastors

‘The Bude public are great, and we get a lot of support from the community.’ Bude Life caught up with local Firefighter, Barney Day, who talked tourist season, incidents and bizarre callouts.

From an average 160 to 190 callout incidents each year, the Bude Community Fire Station Crew, are just a 999 call away from an immediate response. One of the most recent big callouts involved them responding to the major and heart breaking fire at Elements Hotel and Restaurant in Widemouth Bay. Bude Firefighter, Barney Day told us ‘Bude is an on-call station, meaning there are no full time staff. All our crew work in full time jobs elsewhere, and respond to the station when our pagers notify us of a call. We currently have 12 crew on active duty, which is enough to crew both our fire appliances.  It’s a huge responsibility which is often difficult to juggle around work, family and friends – but it’s the commitment of the crew that makes Bude station a success in its mobilisations and responses.’

Tourist season also has an impact on the team. Barney said ‘We’re lucky that we don’t see a big rise in incidents generally, although with busier roads this inevitably leads to more traffic accidents. However, our biggest challenge is responding to the station during the peak tourist seasons.  We generally aim to mobilise a fire engine within 5 minutes of a 999 call – this includes the initial pager alert, making our way to the station, getting changed up, boarding the appliance and becoming mobile.  With gridlocked traffic in and around town, this can be very difficult to achieve.’ Although fires make up the majority of callouts, there’s other unusual callouts that take our Bude heroes by surprise. Barney told us ‘We’ve had animals in sewer pipes, birds trapped in chimneys, children locking themselves in cars, and people locked in toilets which are often the common ones. We’ve also had numerous buildings collapse (thankfully no serious injuries) and a fuel tanker ‘well alight’ was certainly nerve-wracking.’ Whether it’s a full scale fire or a smaller emergency, the community of Bude can be rest assured, that our amazing team will always have our backs! Bude youngster releases single

M

itzi Irish from Bude is just 16 years old and has a huge passion (and talent) for ‘everything music’. Having just released her debut single, ‘Trivial’ on Spotify, Apple Music, and iTunes, she looks set for the big time. She told us ‘My family maintain that I was (and this is a direct quote) “frankly appalling” until the age of about seven!’ - so there’s still hope for any budding young singers who may not have developed their voices yet! Mitzi who describes her music as ‘somewhere between acoustic and pop’, wrote Trivial over Zoom during lockdown with London-based producer and writer Andy Gilbert, who she has been working with over the last six months, along with her manager, Haydn Williams. Mitzi, who plays the guitar and piano as well as taking singing lessons with teacher Val Skull at Shebbear College, has been passionate about music for as long as she can remember. She wrote her first song at just nine years old and performed at her first public gig when she was thirteen.

Mitzi who attends Shebbear College said ‘I’m absolutely elated to have a single out - I’ve wanted to put music on streaming services for years and I finally have! The process has been so interesting - it takes much longer than one would think to release a single, and I’m so grateful to Haydn (my Manager) for organising all of this. There’s so much that goes into music releases that I’d never even considered. The whole experience has been great and whilst the song is still so small, I think it’s ridiculously cool that you can successfully ask Alexa to play ‘Trivial’ by Mitzi Irish!’ Teacher at Shebbear College, Mrs Kirby said ‘I am absolutely delighted for Mitzi as I know she has put a lot of hard work, passion and dedication into this and it’s paid off. To have released a single at the age of 16 is just fantastic and she should be very proud of her accomplishment - she certainly has a very bright future ahead of her. I streamed Trivial as soon as it was out on Saturday and it’s brilliant, very catchy and upbeat - I am definitely a fan!’ You can read the full story and listen to Mitzi’s debut song ‘Trivial’ at www.budelife.co.uk. The sweet smell of fudge Bude Life caught up with Lisa Trott from Nanny Wendy’s Fudge Kitchen who shares with us how the popular local fudge kitchen has gone from strength to strength. Not many people walking up the main high street in Bude could fail to notice and be enticed by the sweet smell of cooking fudge coming from the beautifully presented Nanny Wendy’s Fudge Shop. Now in their third year of operating since taking over from the former Granny Wobbley’s Fudge Shop, owners Barry Langley and Lisa Trott have expanded their operation that would even make Willy Wonka envious. Lisa told Bude Life ‘We bought a big specialist stove which we shipped from Chicago, rolled our sleeves up and got making some fudge.

We’ve got a wide range of fudge, with our most popular flavours being vanilla, caramel and Cornish sea salt – but we’ve got lots of other flavours too that even includes Cornish clotted cream with every element you would expect from a cream tea, covered in our secret ingredients.’ Over the last year, the team at Nanny Wendy’s have experienced huge popularity at a number of trade shows - and over the last month were personally invited to attend the Travelling Feast Festival with celebrity chef, Paul Ainsworth. Lisa told Bude Life ‘We’ve had a great year and we’re so proud to showcase our fudge, not just in Bude, but across Cornwall. It’s great to also see the tourists back and the buzz that there is within the town. Everywhere feels so alive and we’re so glad to be part of this great community we call home.’ To see the full range of products at Nanny Wendy’s Fudge Kitchen including ice cream, wedding favours, hotel welcome gifts – and the complete range of fudge flavours, visit their facebook, insta or twitter pages.
