In 897 CE, Pope Stephen VI held the “ Cadaver Synod”, where he dug up his predecessor Pope Formosus, dressed the corpse in papal robes, put it on trial, and then ordered the body thrown into the Tiber River after declaring it guilty.
Sea turtles can breathe through their butts, using cloacal respiration, allowing them to extract oxygen directly from water while they remain underwater for months during hibernation or long ocean dives.
There’s a type of fungus that zombi es ants, called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, which infects the ant’s brain, controls its movements, forces it to climb to a high leaf, and eventually kills it to sprout a mushroom from its head.
Honeybees can recognize human faces, using a method similar to humans, scanning facial features in patterns and remembering them, which helps them identify intruders or friendly humans near their hives.
A day on Saturn lasts only about 10.7 hours, making its spin incredibly fast compared to Earth, so if you lived there, your “morning” and “night” would be extremely short, and a year would pass in a fraction of Earth time.
Humans can see ultraviolet light under rare conditions, such as after cataract surgery, because the natural lens normally blocks UV rays, but without it, the eye can pick up wavelengths beyond the normal visible spectrum. conditions, spectrum.
Some spiders can y using electricity in the air, releasing silk threads that catch tiny charges, allowing them to lift o and drift over long distances, a bizarre and elegant adaptation called “ballooning.”
Some trees communicate through underground networks, using mycorrhizal fungi to exchange nutrients and chemical signals, warning neighbouring trees about pests or drought conditions in a complex system often called the “Wood Wide Web.”
In the 17th century, tulip bulbs were worth more than houses in the Netherlands, creating “tulip mania,” one of the earliest known nancial bubbles, a bizarre economic phenomenon based entirely on the value of owers.
In 1518, a “dancing plague” struck Strasbourg, where hundreds of people danced uncontrollably for days without rest, and some reportedly died from exhaustion or heart attacks, an unexplained mass hysteria that remains one of history’s strangest medical mysteries.
There’s a species of shark that can walk on land, called the epaulette shark, using its ns to shu e across tidal pools and coral reefs during low tide, an unusual adaptation that blurs the line between sh and amphibian behaviors.
Sea cucumbers can eject their own internal organs to escape predators, later regenerating them completely, an extreme survival strategy that seems like science ction but is surprisingly e ective in the ocean.
There’s a species of lizard that reproduces entirely without males, called the whiptail lizard, with females cloning themselves to produce o spring, a rare example of parthenogenesis in vertebrates.
There’s a phenomenon called “ball lightning”, mysterious glowing orbs that appear during thunderstorms, moving unpredictably and sometimes passing through windows or walls, a strange and dangerous electrical phenomenon that still puzzles scientists.
In Japan, there are “crying sumo” contests, where sumo wrestlers compete to make babies cry, based on the belief that crying babies bring good health and ward o evil spirits, a strange and adorable cultural tradition.
There’s a species of frog that gives birth through its mouth, with o spring developing inside the mother’s vocal sac until they are ready to hop away, a horrifying yet fascinating reproductive adaptation.
Certain birds use humans’ phone vibrations to detect insects, adapting to urban life by listening for tiny signals, a strange example of animals exploiting human technology for their survival.
Some frogs can climb trees using suction cups on their toes, allowing them to cling upside down to leaves and bark, an adaptation that lets them hunt insects and evade predators in rainforests.

With the ongoing developments and evolution of conservatory roofs, we have examined the options available for homeowners looking to maximise the potential of their living space.
Whether you want to expand your current space or improve an existing conservatory, there are a number of products on the market that have significantly altered the home improvement market in recent years.
Edwardian Conservatory
Due to relatively low cost, the traditional conservatory is still the most popular choice for extended living space. Conservatories over 5 years old or those fitted recently with inefficient glass or polycarbonate roofs, are often too cold to use during the coldest winter months and too hot to use during the middle of summer. However, as a result of much investment into energy efficient products over the last 5 years, our conservatories utilise the same technology as our A+ rated windows and doors, meaning radiation heat gain is reduced in the summer and conduction heat loss is reduced in the winter, making the conservatory more useable during the seasonal extremes. With a range of shapes and sizes available, we can extend your living space for a modest outlay.
Orangeries are increasing in popularity recently due to their grand visual aesthetics and opulent accessories. This stunning building floods the adjoining rooms with light, whilst the interior height of the Orangery creates the feeling of grandeur that is sure to appeal to the discerning homeowner. Whether you prefer a brick pillar look with matching parapet, or vertical columns and a decorative fascia, we have options to compliment and suit every taste.
LivinROOM
Our Livin Rooms combine the best of both worlds, giving you the light of a conservatory but the feel of an extension. You can maintain light and space by
using windows all round, have brickpiers to give a greater sense of solidity or use our super - insulated Loggia columns for a stylish, thermally efficient finish. The internal pelmet also allows you to install downlighters, giving you an authentic Orangery experience at a conservatory price point.
LivinRoof is the first roofing system designed to give you the flexibility to combine solid and glazed roofing seamlessly. It helps you extend your living space and enhance thermal performance to give you a room that you can use all year round.
Whether you are constructing a new home extension or replacing an old existing conservatory roof ,the LivinROOF can give you total design flexibility and the ability to create stylish and thermally efficient rooms like no other solution on the market. The LivinROOF can be installed on top of any shape conservatory, allowing you as many or as few glazing panels as you require. Plastered on the inside, the LivinROOF provides a truly superb extended living solution.
Our WARMroof technology enables homeowners to remove the traditional choice between a conventional extension and a conservatory. These highly functional, flexible and luxurious living spaces are suitable for both new installations and conservatory replacement projects, providing you with a living space that is comfortable whatever the outside temperature. Giving a cosy but grandiose feel inside, the clever use of modern building materials allows the additional living space to blend seamlessly with the existing home. With a range of tiled roofs options and traditional or contemporary designs, we can cater for all types of extension or replacement roofs.
Great service and excellent product. From first contact with John the salesman through to plasterers, electricians and Anthony and Dan who built the conservatory, all were very professional and friendly. I will definitely be asking the company to replace my windows in due course and would highly recommend Falcon Installations to anyone considering any home improvements. - Sian Miles
Great to deal with. Visited the store and so much helpfulinfo was given. We ordered a new door and it was fitted promptly. A few weeks later we decided we needed a door knocker which we hadn't ordered. They sent someone up and fitted it without extra charge. What more can one say? - Phil Gardner

Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their loved ones eventually. But this will not happen for many unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. e solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the rst partner, their Will speci es that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate bene ciary of this share, normally the children of the deceased. e surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the bene ciaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the bene ciaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. is last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together but have children from di erent partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the trust remain over the new property.
Westminster Law will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Tokyo Express
by Seicho Matsumoto
Yasuda is an eminent Japanese businessman who frequents the Koyuki restaurant in Akusaka, where Toki is his regular waitress. When he visits the restaurant one day in Toki's absence he invites some of her colleagues to tea before persuading them to see him off at the railway station. While awaiting his train he points out Toki boarding another train escorted by a male companion. Her colleagues are surprised to see her with a boyfriend but are happy for her...until they read of their apparent joint suicide at a lonely beach.
Doubting the verdict, Inspectors Jutaro from Akusaka and Mihara from Tokyo make their own investigations to reach their own conclusions despite their chief suspect having an apparently cast-iron alibi. After deciphering a series of railway and flight timetables, the pair compare notes to achieve the same result.

This is a fascinating story involving determination and co-operation...and an introduction to the Japanese railway system.
An overnight trip to the Bombay Sapphire Gin Distillery this August was a welcome outing for 33 of our Coychurch members. Joined by 10 guests, including friends from neighbouring WIs in Pencoed and Dinas Powys, it was a wonderful opportunity to have fun whilst exploring somewhere new.
The Village Hotel in Basingstoke was our home for the night, and the following morning, we travelled to Laverstoke Mill, where Bombay Sapphire Gin has been distilled for the last 10 years.
We began our gin journey at The Turbine Bar, where we created our own gin and tonics before moving on to the educational Cinema Room and then visiting the Botanical Dry Room.
Expert tour hosts looked after us, and we learned how gin became popular during the British Raj in India, earning the nickname “Bombay”. We then acquired the name "Sapphire" after a famous blue sapphire, the Star of Bombay, which led to the unique branding of our blue bottles.
The tour concluded with a visit to the gin shop, and then we travelled back via Salisbury, where we had lunch and explored the city before nally returning home. A gintastic adventure, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone!

Imagine diving into the Gulf of Mexico, expecting only sand and sea creatures, only to nd an extraordinary underwater world. Towering tree stumps rise from the seabed, their roots twisting across the sandy oor like frozen tentacles. Fish weave between these ancient trunks, crabs scuttle through hollowed-out logs, and a faint, earthy smell wafts from wood submerged for tens of thousands of years. This isn’t ction; it’s the real “underwater forest” discovered o Alabama’s coast—a time capsule dating back to the Ice Age.
For nearly 50,000 years, the forest lay concealed beneath layers of sand and mud, sealed o from oxygen. It was only after Hurricane Ivan in 2004 that shifting currents unveiled this remarkable site. Local shermen rst noticed an unusual catch of sh from a speci c patch of the Gulf. Intrigued by the bounty, divers set out to investigate, leading to an astonishing discovery.
The seabed revealed remnants of a vast cypress forest that once ourished in prehistoric North America’s swampy landscapes. The trees stood upright, their trunks rising several meters from the oor, with roots buried deep in ancient soil. Remarkably, the wood was well-preserved enough to release a fresh, resinous scent when cut, evoking the feeling that the forest had been frozen in time, untouched by decay.
Scienti c analysis indicates that the forest dates back to the last Ice Age. Approximately 50,000 years ago, sea levels were signi cantly lower, and much of the Gulf Coast was dry land. This area was once a lush, swampy plain lled with life—giant ground sloths, sabre-toothed cats, mastodons, and early human ancestors likely roamed its edges. As sea levels rose, the forest became buried and cut o from air and light. In this oxygen-starved tomb, decay slowed dramatically, allowing the trees to remain eerily well-preserved.
For divers, entering this underwater forest feels like stepping into a forgotten world. Sunlight lters down through the water, illuminating ghostly trunks covered in barnacles and corals. Schools of snapper and grouper dart among the roots, transforming the site into a vibrant arti cial reef. The ambient silence of this underwater landscape, broken only by the crackle of shrimp and the occasional rush of bubbles, enhances its haunting atmosphere.
Beyond its stunning beauty, the forest is an invaluable scienti c treasure. By studying the wood and surrounding sediments, researchers can unlock secrets of Earth’s ancient climate. Tree rings provide data on past rainfall and temperature uctuations, while pollen trapped in the soil reveals the ora that once thrived nearby. These clues o er a rare glimpse into how ecosystems adapted to signi cant warming and cooling events of the Ice Age, providing insights relevant to understanding how today’s world might respond to climate change.
However, the future of the forest is precarious. The same natural forces that revealed it now threaten its existence. Ongoing storms reshape the seabed, and curious divers risk damaging the fragile trunks. Concerns also exist that logging companies might one day seek to harvest the wood for pro t due to its well-preserved state. Scientists are racing against time to document this unique site before it is potentially lost again, whether reclaimed by shifting sands or harmed by human interference. What makes the underwater forest so mesmerizing isn’t just its age or scienti c value; it ignites the imagination. It serves as a powerful reminder that Earth holds countless stories beneath its surface, waiting for the right moment to be uncovered. Fifty thousand years ago, this forest was alive with birds and animals moving through its dense undergrowth. Today, it resonates with marine life, forming a new ecosystem atop the remnants of the old.
To swim among these ancient trees is to experience time in a way few places allow. It is to witness the resilience of nature, the fragility of our world, and the strange beauty of a landscape that de es expectation. The forest under the sea is more than a discovery; it’s a living bridge between the Earth we inherited from the past and the uncertain future we are shaping now.
