ELECTED OFFICER EDITORS Sruthi K. Subhash VPEW (HW)

Brandon Tester President

As the academic year’s first term comes to a close, we have been on a mission to make life better for students at Bucks! From Monthly Monday Meals to mocktail-making madness, our sabbatical officers have been working tirelessly to ensure Bucks students are well-fed, well-represented, and have the best student experience possible. One of the standout initiatives this term has been the continuation of Monthly Monday Meals, a campaign created to help students cope with the cost-of-living crisis and learn a key life skill. Every month a new recipe is released, and students can sign up to collect a free ingredients bag. We are very grateful to the council who have helped to fund this campaign. If you have any recipe ideas please get in touch with Brandon! Along with Monthly Monday Meals you can also get a free hot meal from the SU Lounge on Tuesdays 5:30pm, Thursdays 5:30pm, and Sundays 7pm. Our Uxbridge students can get a free breakfast on Tuesdays and Thursdays 8.30am -10am and Aylesbury Students can get a free lunch on Tuesdays and Wednesdays noon – 2pm.

Jess Bradbury VPAB

But that’s not all – the Bucks SU Celebrates campaign has been spreading across campus, showcasing the rich diversity of our student body. From Diwali to steelpan parties, this campaign has truly embodied the themes of belonging and celebration, proving that there’s more to student life than textbooks and deadlines. If you have any celebrations or event ideas would like to see please get in touch with Jess! Our Vice Presidents Education and Welfare have been attending academic misconduct panels, education committees and validation panels to ensure the student voice is inputted. They are also working on wellbeing initiatives and activities for students which you will see coming out soon… so make sure you’re keeping an eye on the What’s On Page!

VPAB update

The Bucks Student By Jess Bradbury

Have you been achieving and belonging? Term 1 has come to end and what a term it’s been! From beach cleaning to fixtures, fundraising to event hosting – we really did it all! September saw the return of our yearly Free Freshers’ Fortnight, with world famous DJ’s to craft nights. It was a jam-packed two weeks and really set us off with a bang for what the rest of the term had in store for us. October saw the start of Weekly Wednesday Wins for our sports teams! Although every week we did see some losses and games being called off due to the weather, spirits were never dampened and now it’s full steam ahead in preparation for our annual varsity fixture against our rivals Roehampton University! Our societies and Sports for Fun activities have had a very successful first term with participation numbers sky rocketing we found ourselves having to find bigger spaces for some of our societies! October also saw the launch of our Bucks SU Celebrates campaign! At Bucks Students’ Union we believe we should be celebrating our students all year round not just on specific days or just in a month. During October we held lots of different events and activities to celebrate our black students however, this won’t stop just because October is over! Keep an eye on our what’s on page to see all of the different events that we have going on. If you have any ideas for future celebrations, activities and events please get in touch with me.

November was another busy month for me… we saw moustache growing, Diwali celebrating and lot’s and lot’s of meetings! I have been on a number of meetings planning and prepping for our January intake of students and making sure that they can have the best experience possible but also so returning students can be reminded of all the amazing things they can get involved in! As we move into term 2 I’m looking forward to assisting with the planning of AU dinner and Varsity, which tickets go on sale after Christmas! RAG Week 2, Green Week and all coming up so as always keep an eye on the What’s On Page and our Social Media to see what you can get involved in. If you have any ideas for events, campaigns or activities please do get in touch with the Students’ Union by popping in, dropping anyone an email or using the feedback form! Have a fabulous break and see you all soon!!

xoxo

Union Council update

By Ana Timoteo Silva

Hey everyone – it’s your new Union Council chair, Ana, here with an update! From now on, you’ll be getting updates from me on the on goings of Union Council, looking at a quick overview of what happened, who was there, some of the hot seat questions which were answered by the elected officers and announcing the winners of the shopping vouchers. Our second Union Council of the year went underway with a strong set of attendees, 72 to be exact! 3 of the students will be luckily enough to win £20 in shopping vouchers of their choice. Keep reading to find out who the lucky winners are and if you want to be in a chance to win then… Turn up! We opened Union Council with the Introduction of myself and what my role will entail as Union Council Chair, essentially helping the officers and rep team with the smooth running of the meeting and inputting any ideas that I have which will help make it more engaging! Our officers, Jess, Amy, Sruthi and Brandon gave us a quick update on what they’ve been up to, an update from one of our Executive Officers about their plans to support the membership for their respective areas, followed with our Trustee update. You can find the minutes of the meeting by going to the Bucks Students’ Union website, Your Union, about us and clicking committee minutes.

Following up from this, we had Sam Mitchell from the safeguarding team do a talk on the new system that BNU have implemented which is ‘Report and Support’ a tool to record safeguarding concerns with the University. This can be found by searching ‘Report and Support’ or ‘Safeguarding’ on BNU’s website. A reminder that if you know of anyone who is in immediate danger to themselves or others to call 999. We also provided an update on the Students’ Union’s plans to change the ‘BAME’ Executive Officer as we felt it is time to re-evaluate this title to better reflect the values and principles that it represents for our members. You can read more on page 6, or vote for your preferred title below: bucksstudentsunion.org/surveys/ bameexecname

Oh, our winner from last Union Council are… Charlotte Leighton-Woods, Ayesha Chaudhry and Eleisha Skinner Congratulations and best of luck to attendees in the next meeting!

Join us on Thursday 30 November in S3.01 or online at 5pm for an update from the University’s Accommodation team, to discuss how BNU can make student life more affordable on campus for you.

VPEW Uxbridge and Aylesbury update

The Bucks Student By Amy Pile

A roundup before the holiday break A note from Amy, VPEW

As we approach the holiday break, it’s time to reflect on the exciting and busy months I’ve had. I would like to share a recap of the recent happenings, initiatives, and plans for the upcoming weeks.

Student Wellbeing initiatives:

We’re thrilled to see students enjoying the free breakfasts at Uxbridge and complimentary lunches at Aylesbury. I would like to highlight that student concerns have been actively addressed and I’m currently working with the catering team regarding these concerns, it emphasizes the importance of student voices in bringing about positive changes. Remember, breakfasts at Uxbridge are on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8.30— 10am and lunches at Aylesbury are on Tuesday and Wednesday from noon—2pm.

Community wellbeing fair & mindfulness bags

Sunflower campaign:

I played a role in organising the community wellbeing fair at Uxbridge. Students engaged in the event, receiving mindfulness bags with stress-relief techniques. The success continues with another fair scheduled for Monday 4 December at Aylesbury, promising more opportunities for student engagement.

I’m still in search for someone who wishes to enhance their portfolio and paint sunflowers at all 3 campuses High Wycombe, Uxbridge and Aylesbury. If you are interested or want to find out more information then please email me at amy.pile@bnu.ac.uk

Name change voting and student Advocacy:

I want to emphasize the importance of the ongoing Travel Placement Survey, which closes in early December, please visit bucksstudentsunion.org/surveys/placementtravel to complete, thank you. I’m collaborating with university partners, and I encourage all students who attend any placement setting to participate and share their thoughts. Additionally, I’m diligently working on placement booklets, ensuring they contain all the necessary information for students.

Students will have the chance to vote on the proposed change of the name ‘BAME’ executive officer. I encourage everyone to visit the SU website and participate in the decision-making process. I have been actively involved in various meetings, including Education Committee and the Academic Integrity Panel, advocating for students’ interests.

Festive week and Inclusivity:

Festive week, taking place from Monday 4 to Friday 8 December, promises a week full of diverse activities. I assure inclusivity for all and it’s the opportunity to raise funds for RAG, Stokenchurch Dog Rescue and collaborating with the nursing team to support Save the Children.

Aylesbury SU update and Future Plans:

While Aylesbury takes a bit longer than expected to be fully operational, I look forward to spending my first full two days there at the beginning of December. Despite ongoing tasks, I aim to showcase the progress in January’s Union Council meeting.

Travel Placement Survey & placement booklets

Union Council and Future plans

I want to express my enjoyment of attending Union Council, the structure I think is much better, I hope it’s proving to be beneficial for students attending. I have some upcoming plans, with some exciting initiatives in the planning stages, with more details to be shared in my fortnightly updates.

Closing thoughts

As the holiday break approaches, I want to extend my warm wishes to all students, hoping you have a fantastic and welldeserved break wherever you may be. Please do reach out to friends, family and supportive services if needed.

VPEW Uxbridge and Aylesbury update

Navigating the high cost-of-living A guide for students managing childcare expenses

As the academic year unfolds, students are not only grappling with the challenges of demanding coursework but are also facing the harsh reality of the cost of living. For many, the burden is intensified when childcare expenses come into play. Balancing academic responsibilities with the financial strain of childcare can be a daunting task, but there are avenues of support available for those willing to explore them.

The impact of the cost of living on student parents The cost of living is a persistent concern for students, but for those who are parents, the challenges are particularly formidable. As tuition fees, rent, and daily expenses continue to soar, the additional burden of childcare costs can become a major obstacle to academic success. Striking a balance between education and childcare responsibilities often requires careful financial planning and a keen awareness of available resources.

NHS Bursary Childcare Allowance for Medical and Dental students

For medical and dental students eligible to receive NHS Bursary funding in the 2023/24 academic year, there is a potential lifeline to help ease the strain of childcare costs. The NHS Bursary Childcare Allowance provides financial assistance specifically tailored to support student parents in these fields. https://cms.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/sites/default/ files/2023-09/Help%20with%20childcare%20costs%20for%20NHS%20Bursary%20 students%202023-24%20%28V1%29%2009.2023.pdf Eligible students can learn about the process and the assistance available to them.

Support for all students: Government Assistance

There are government schemes designed to provide financial aid for childcare costs to students across various disciplines. The support while you study initiative is a comprehensive resource that outlines the assistance available for eligible students Help paying for childcare: Help with childcare while you study - GOV.UK (www.gov. uk). The support is not guaranteed and is contingent on individual circumstances, but it represents a valuable option for those in need. Please also visit this website as it gives much more guidance and information https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/ childcare-support-for-students/

Navigating the Application Process

Understanding the eligibility criteria and navigating the application process is crucial for students seeking assistance with childcare costs. Both the NHS Bursary Childcare Allowance and government support programs have specific requirements that must be met. It is essential for students to carefully review guidelines provided in the respective application forms and gather the necessary documentation to support their claims. If you need any support, please book an appointment with student advice or visit the student hub.

Final Thought

As we navigate the complexities of student life, it is essential to foster a community where information and support are readily accessible. By sharing this guide, we hope to empower student parents to pursue their academic aspirations without sacrificing the well-being of their families. Remember, the journey may be challenging, but with the right support, every student can overcome the hurdles on their path to success.

Have your say

The Bucks Student By Lucy Ryan

Have your say: It’s time to re-name

BAME

Within the Students’ Union, equality, diversity and inclusion underpin everything we deliver.

As part of our ongoing commitment to creating a more inclusive environment, we have identified an opportunity to redefine one of our executive officer roles. The position currently carries the title “BAME Officer” (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic), however, we believe that it’s time to re-evaluate this title to better reflect the values and principles that it represents. We are inviting all students who self-identify as Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority backgrounds to participate in a decision-making process to select a new title for the executive officer role. Your vote matters and the survey is now open. The Need for Change

Your Vote, Your Impact

The term “BAME” has been widely used to describe individuals of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic backgrounds. It has faced criticism as a term which has been used to describe all individuals who aren’t white. However, grouping individuals from different ethnicities under one umbrella term doesn’t encompass an understanding of different cultures, and many feel that this term fails to capture the diversity and complexity of the communities it seeks to represent.

As students, your voice matters, and your vote can shape the future of this executive officer role. We believe that a more inclusive title can better represent the diverse experiences and backgrounds of the individuals this role serves. Your vote will shape the future of this role for a positive impact on our campus community.

The Proposed Titles To address this, we have proposed three alternative titles for the executive officer role. Each of these titles has been carefully considered to reflect the goals of the position and the communities it serves more accurately: 1. Race Equity Executive Officer 2. Ethnic Diversity Executive Officer 3. Global Majority Students Executive Officer

How to Vote To cast your vote, simply visit: bucksstudentsunion. org/surveys/bameexecname You will have the opportunity to select your preferred role title from the three options. The closing date for votes is Wednesday 29 November, with the role title confirmed at Union Council on Thursday 30 November.

Volunteer competition

The Bucks Student By Jess Bradbury

It’s time to WIN!

With our volunteering competition...

Calling all volunteers! We are holding our first volunteer competition of the year… It’s a competition that’s not just about winning a £20 voucher, but also about putting back into the wider community and making a real difference. Why Volunteer? Because Why Not? Life can get so busy that it’s super easy to forget the impact a small act of kindness can have. However, volunteering can help! It’s a chance to show that you care, to be part of something bigger, and to meet new people. Volunteering looks incredible on your CV too – showing you’ve achieved 100’s of volunteer hours as well as a degree shows you have time management skills like no other but shows that you are willing to help support outside causes. The Challenge: Who Can Do It All! The challenge is simple: attend the most volunteer activities before December 1st. It’s not about putting in crazy hours; it’s about showing up and being consistent. Whether you’re helping out at One Can Trust or making people smile, every little bit counts. Sign up and attend as many volunteer opportunities (and log the hours) as you can and you could be in with the chance of winning a £20 voucher… just in time for the holidays! Head to the What’s On Page and get signed up!

Volunteering and RAG

The Bucks Student By Kelly Wiles

Volunteering Roundup

October has been a busy month with all the volunteer activity happening. In collaboration with Brighton SU, 45 of our students headed to Brighton to clean the beach and understand the need for beaches and the Ocean to be litter free. We added to this to make the experience even more fulfilling by adding tickets to the Sea life Aquarium and just for some extra fun we also got some students doing the longest Zipwire on the south coast. We have had a total of 35 members heading to the One Can trust to help pick and pack food parcels for some of the most vulnerable families in Buckinghamshire, and to finish all that off we have been making wildflower bombs and throwing them opposite the Venue Garden, hopefully we will be seeing the blooms in the spring. We went back to everyone’s favourite place The Horse Trust – the oldest equine rescue centre in the world, to clear some fields for more horses, allowing the horses to have a better experience and room to run about. October has seen our members gain awards for the hours they have been volunteering. Remember you too can get involved with all that is happening. For Halloween we had 12 students head to Chiltern Open Air Museum to take part in their annual scare maze, with a great range of students from different courses and societies and clubs. Students planned costumes, make up and props to make the most of the experience and then volunteered for 9 hours to get everything together and then scare the public. Chiltern Open Air Museum were happy with all the costumes and behaviour of our members, and we are welcome back anytime.

“I just wanted to say what a huge credit the students were to Bucks New University. They were absolutely fantastic in both the Spooky walk and not so Spooky walk and brought life to these areas with wonderful immersive acting. Many of our visitors did the walks multiple times as they loved the experience so much. The scarer’s delivered just the right amount of scare and the friendly witches and their spells and interaction with our young visitors were delightful.”

What do you think you know about Biodiversity? Biodiversity is a word we all know but do we understand what this is and how it effects the world? Biodiversity is the variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat, a high level of which is usually considered to be important and desirable. We are all connected to a wider eco system, as organisms rely on each other to survive. The UK boasts more than 70000 known species of animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms. Since the 1970s there has been a 13% decline in the average abundance of wildlife in the UK. 6% of the uk mammals are at real risk of becoming extinct, while 22% of seabird species studied have declined in the last five decades.

As humans we are overusing the earths biocapacity by an estimated 56%, due to this the current rate of global extinction of species is 100 to 1000 times faster than the assumed natural extinction rate. The Green ambassadors Lucy and Bianca will be running a biodiversity campaign on the 27 November – 2 December. We will be asking you what you know about biodiversity and how you feel about it, we will also be making bug and bee houses to be put around the university and more flower bombs. We want to make a difference in the world around us, every small difference can make a difference and if we all contribute a small amount of effort to helping with pollination and protecting oceans and coastlines, we would all live in a better world.

Honeybees get the most credit, but did you know that at least 1500 insect species pollinate plants as well. Pollinators are responsible for a third of the worlds crop production. Without pollinators we would not have apples, cherries, blueberries, almonds and many other foods we eat.

This year Bianca is your elected Fairtrade ambassador. We will be running the Smile campaign in both High Wycombe and Uxbridge. We want to encourage not only students to understand the effects of Fairtrade but also the community around us. On the 20 November in High Wycombe we will be hitting the rush hour to hand out Fairtrade bananas and flapjacks to morning

commuters and recording their smiles. This is a great way for students to get involved in the community and be educating at the same time. We will also be doing this for Uxbridge as well on the 27 November so our Uxbridge students can get involved as well.

On Wednesday 22 november we will be hosting the Fairtrade Breakfast so come along and meet Mike, our High Wycombe Fairtrade chairman, and grab a bite to eat and guess what … It’s free. Keep an eye on the What’s On page for all the updates.

Men’s Netball

By Tim Cunningham

Men’s Netball

In a spectacular debut on the national netball scene, the Men’s Netball Team, under the astute leadership of Captain Tim Cunningham, etched their names in history by claiming the 5th position in their first tournament over the weekend. Captain Cunningham, with a mix of pride and humility, reflected on the team’s remarkable journey. “This achievement is a testament to the incredible effort and dedication of each player. We came into this tournament as underdogs, and leaving as the 5th best team in the country is a testament to our collective passion for the sport.” Facing seasoned adversaries, the team, guided by Cunningham’s strategic acumen, displayed a level of skill and unity that surpassed expectations. Cunningham emphasized the importance of teamwork and the camaraderie that fueled their success.

“As captain, I couldn’t be prouder of the way our team performed. We’ve shown that gender should never be a barrier in netball. This is not just a ranking; it’s a statement about breaking stereotypes and forging new paths in the sport,” Cunningham declared. With their eyes set on future challenges, Captain Tim Cunningham and the Men’s Netball Team are poised for an exciting journey ahead, aiming to build on their impressive debut and inspire others to embrace the inclusive spirit of netball

BNU Nursing society | Netball

The Bucks Student By Abdalla Abdi | Marcee Collicott, Jorja Fulford

BNU Nursing In the vibrant landscape of healthcare, the heartbeat of any institution lies in its nursing society. Our mission as a society at Buckinghamshire New University is to provide a dynamic and welcoming nursing community that puts students at the forefront of this life-changing experience. Our society’s strength lies in its commitment to fostering a supportive environment for flourishing nurses. By placing students in the driver’s seat, we ensure that their voices, ideas, and aspirations resonate throughout our community. It’s not just about academic excellence; it’s about creating a space where diverse perspectives flourish, and each student feels valued. We encourage all members to voice their thoughts and feelings regarding the direction and activities of our nursing society, as we believe that every perspective is a valuable contribution to the collective growth and success of our community. We welcome and embrace the diverse perspectives that enrich our collective journey, ultimately strengthening the bonds that tie us together in the pursuit of excellence and inclusivity. So, let your voice be heard, and let us continue to build a nursing society that reflects the passion, dedication, and diversity of its members.

As a society, our commitment extends beyond social gatherings. We aim to provide academic support to our fellow student nurses through numeracy and group study sessions, fostering an environment that encourages learning and refines your understanding of nursing materials. Additionally, we have prepared an exciting lineup of social events for you to enjoy and unwind from the rigors of university life.

There are more socials and collaborations planned throughout the year. For now we intend to hold a cake sale around December at the Uxbridge campus so keep an eye on the Bucks Students’ Union What’s On page for updates, and follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook (@BucksNurSociety) to stay informed about our latest events. We’re excited about the journey ahead and look forward to sharing many more memorable moments with you throughout the school year.

Netball

“I joined netball to make friends and to take part in physical activity whilst studying. I thoroughly enjoy netball; training and competing with my teammates. It has encouraged me to put myself out there and make friends with various people and build stronger bonds with people I already knew. As well as the committee being really welcoming and encouraging everyone to get involved in activities. I personally like that there is a choice whether you can participate for fun or in a competitive manner. This way, anyone of any level can take part and join the netball community. Although, I joined netball for the competitive side of netball. Being part of a team gives me a sense of belonging and inspires me to work harder towards netball. There is never a dull moment on the team, as we encourage and support each other on and off the court.”

BNU Boxing

The Bucks Student By Connor Martin, Rory George Hinton, Rizwan Ali

BNU Boxing

Well it’s that time again for your monthly scheduled Boxing Society update! Preparations are already underway for our big event: Fight Night, my meaning of this being as of this session (16 November) we will be commencing technical sparring sessions, that being exercises meant to sharpen your reflexes, aim and speed: all things you DEFINITELY want in a real bout. If you’ve been holding off on Boxing for a while and you’re thinking you’d like your name up there in big bright lights and a chance to show the uni what you’ve got, by all means come along, it’s not too late to get started on yourself now and give yourself probably the chance of a lifetime, after all I don’t think many boxing matches come along and place themselves at your feet now do they? Even if you’re not feeling like an April bout (by which I mean sparring is not mandatory), come along to sessions at 5:20pm at the Venue. The fitness is well worth the effort and there’s no doubt you’ll feel the difference walking around Wycombe (I certainly am). My second point is that I’m proud to announce that we have finalized the purchase of the first ever uni logoed boxing gloves for our members, this will be the first order for the year but we no doubt plan on a second eventually, even if you didn’t get them now, there’s always a chance later; for £25 a set (which is yours to keep) it’s an absolute steal, gloves can be pricey and I didn’t want to impact our members too much in the wallet department so I made as fair a price as I reasonably could. These by the way are suitable for uni sparring as well as fight night and I’m sure they’ll serve you well Our very own coach, Stu. outside of the uni. (He’s lovely, I promise!)

My last points are endorsements, first being our very own new videographer: Rory George Hinton! A personal friend of mine as well as an acting student who’s been behind and in front of the camera so I asked him to see if he can use some of those skills at our faithful society (the filming, maybe with some acting). He’s already shown me he’s got what it takes and I’m proud to have him on, our members (including you?) certainly appreciate they can show off their hard work; this experience will make filming fight night the best possible showing it can be so I’d like to thank him again for dedicating the time and the effort. My second is for our photographer: Rizwan Ali, who took the very photos you’re looking at in the article as we speak, another personal friend of mine, the work he’s given me so far shows me he’s far and away the perfect fit for our society and I’m glad to have him.
