Seeing to Paint Before painter, script writer and movie director George Gallo could really paint in the tradition of the Pennsylvania Impressionists, he had to learn how see By Bob Waite

A

t the age of 12 George Gallo’s mother gave him an oil painting set. As he experimented with his oil paints, he became enamored with landscape painting. “I don’t know why,” he admits. Then as a young man, George went to an art show in New York at the Grand Central Gallery, which at the time was owned by John Evans. This show not only firmed up his commitment to landscape painting, but he says, “…literally changed the direction of my life.” The show featured Pennsylvania Impressionists Walter Elmer Schofield, Daniel Garber and Edward Willis Redfield. George, recalling the

show, says, “The impact that the show had on me was pretty overwhelming because I walked into this giant gallery on 57th Street and here are these large paintings that are like 57 by 60. Standing in front of a Redfield as a young guy trying to be a painter was an amazing experience. When you get close to one of his paintings it is just energized pieces of paint, but when you stand back—Wow! You just feel the warmth. I had to figure out how to do it.” The Grand Central’s owner John Evans and George Gallo soon became close friends. Evans gave George a stack of 5 by 7 transparencies to study and George bought a lightboard and became familiar with them all. “There wasn’t a lot of literature on the Pennsylvania Impressionists back then,” he recalls. To learn more about these Pennsylvania painters, George drove all the way to New Hope from upstate New York. “I went to New Hope, Phillips Mill and all the places that Pennsylvania Impressionists painted. And I fell in love with the area.” George from then on visited Bucks County regularly. “I started these pilgrimages to paint. I would attempt to paint outside—these large paintings. All I did was paint. Over time I began to get a handle on it and I painted nonstop.” Besides painting, George Gallo became a noted

Hollywood director and screenwriter and is known for such films as Midnight Run, Bad Boys and Middle Men. He started working in the movie industry at the age of thirty and moved to California. Nonetheless he continued to make his pilgrimages to Bucks County to paint what he views as the most beautiful scenery in the country. He says, “I am a painter first. I make movies to support my painting habit. As soon as I finish a movie, I go right back to the easel.” eorge paints from life, memory and photographs.Painting from memory is something that took him a long time and a lot of patience to achieve, but it was worth it, because it improved his ability to think out a painting in abstract shapes and colors. He most enjoys painting from life and he likes to at least begin a painting outdoors, even if he ends up putting on the finishing touches in his studio. When he visits Bucks County, he always brings a camera with him. “If I can’t paint from life,” he says, “I paint from the many photos I have taken.” George never went to art school. His training began with studying other painters and trial and error. Seeing that he needed more, he began an

apprenticeship with the internationally known impressionist painter, George Cherepov. “I was his apprentice for a few years. I was there countless hours. He taught me how to see. A lot of what he taught me was to not see things as objects but as color shapes with notes of color inside. He taught me about soft edges and hard edges.” During and after this apprenticeship, George began to paint in a way that seemed to make the colors vibrate. He says, “Everything I’m doing I’m basing on the interaction of secondary colors.” Secondary colors are made through the combination of the primary colors red, blue and yellow. So, for example, red and yellow make orange and blue and red make purple and blue and yellow make green. The interesting thing about combining complimentary colors is that if you place colors next to each other that are at the opposite end of the color spectrum, you get them to vibrate—a technique used by

Redfield and other Pennsylvania Impressionists. A book by the Impressionist painter Emile Gruppe extended George’s knowledge of color theory. Gruppe painted exclusively outdoors like Redfield, and he further developed the color theory that was used by all the impressionistic painters. George explains that the cones in our eyes crave complimentary color and will even fill it in when it is not there. Nature itself presents what we see in this way. So, for example, red from fall leaves will make sheep painted

with white paint look pink in a painting. So by using complimentary colors correctly you not only get a vibrating effect, but you are actually painting the way things appear to the eye. Knowing what colors to place next to each other, especially in an Impressionistic work, creates in the eye colors that are not really there but are expected, and not only that, it gives color a certain vibrancy that if taken to its extreme can even be “garish.” This is where the painter’s skill and feel for color must come into play. George mixes his paints while painting. “I don’t use earth colors. I mix all the browns. I mix compliments, purples and orange. If you keep certain colors close together, when you step back from the painting, you see what the artist has seen in nature.” George Gallo’s paintings are all large and vibrant. Even though in Impressionist style George puts the paint on thick and uses wide brush strokes, there is much subtlety in the composition sometimes with tiny bits of color and soft edged lines that are colored on a continuum of hue and value. George Gallo has won many awards for his luminous paintings and has had several one-man shows at prestigious galleries in New York, including three at the Grand Central Gallery. His work is found in collections around the world and in the private collections of Robert DeNiro, Meg Ryan, Bruce Hornsby, Armin MuellerStahl and Mel Gibson. George, whose large vibrant paintings are available through the Rich Timmons

Fine Art Gallery, in Doylestown, misses his regular trips to Bucks County. “I would come to Bucks County constantly to paint, but with Covid, I haven’t been there for a year. I did a movie called Comeback Trail and a lead actor who lives in Bucks County asked me if I wanted to come stay with them when the pandemic is over. It’s not a good idea, because I’m never going to leave.” George admits that he plans to eventually leave the movie business and devote the rest of life to painting. DRUMBORE’S Hidden Changes By Beth S. Buxbaum

Having a history of renovations in seamless conformity to the original, the new owners, Don and Trish Wolfe, were also able to make changes to this historic Perkasie house while preserving its historic character

D

RUMBORE FARM'S HISTORY HAS BEEN preserved throughout the years with a seamless execution of renovations. It would be difficult see where the original home ended, and the newer spaces began. This preservation of the farmhouse's past is appreciated by the newest owners, Don and Trish Wolfe. California transplants, they moved to the East Coast in 2006. Don had a business opportunity with his employer, Deloitte, which was based in Horsham. Deciding where to buy a home was a challenge. They wanted to live near Don's work and looked in several nearby locals. “We wanted to live in the country,” Don adds, “and had the idea of a stone house or cottage. Also, we like homes with historical character.” The couple began doing a lot of online searches. “We looked at many properties and were getting very discouraged,” says Trish. When they saw Drumbore Farm in Perkasie, it sparked some interest, so they decided to visit the property. This was the Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2021

last place they went to see. “We drove up one evening,” Don describes, “and the light was perfect; it was magical.” Both Don and Trish had the same reaction, that this might just be the house. Once they were inside, they knew this would be their next home. The property Don and Trish looked at had all the proper historical credentials. Drumbore Farm has been on this land since the early 1800s. Its earliest known history indicates that the original log cabin was built on a parcel granted to William Penn in 1681. During its long and storied past, thousands of acres of this land have changed hands. Some acres were sold to new settlers, more than

once it was on auction and several times it was handed down from father to son. When the homestead was purchased by Henry Drumbore, in 1798, the farm took his name. In formal tax records the farm is listed as 180 acres with a one-story log house and a log barn. From this point, for many decades, each time the property changed hands, there was a reduction in the acreage. What is known is that the present stone house, stone barn and stone summer kitchen were probably built by Daniel Althouse between 1815 and 1820 on 49 acres. The farmhouse consisted of a living and dining room downstairs and three bedrooms upstairs. Accounts state that their

34

architectural evidence shows that the stone house was built over the footprint of the old log house. The Althouse family lived on the farm from 1811 to 1904. After this point it changed hands many times. One notable owner was the Dutch-born artist, Joseph Meierhands who lived here from 1934 to 1943. After 1945 several tracts of the land were carved out of the original farm and sold separately. While the total acreage of the homestead decreased, the farmhouse expanded over its lifetime to accommodate the families that resided there. Described as an understated Federal-style pointed stone farmhouse, this homestead has been lovingly

maintained throughout its history. All original spaces have been preserved, with most of the original features intact during the expansions. From owner to owner, there were renovations and upgrades. In 1990 there was a renovation that involved some

36

extensive exterior and interior modifications. The original stucco exterior was sandblasted, windows were replaced, and stone was repointed. Part of this renovation attached the original summer kitchen to the main building, integrating it with the main

house. A few years later, in 2001, the original summer kitchen was transformed into a new kitchen and pantry. Also during this renovation, a back door was constructed in the back wall of this area, and a stone terrace and retaining wall were added. What is notable is that the authenticity of the structure has been respectfully maintained. “The house was in good condition and had good bones,” Don says. Don and Trish already had a few very specific ideas in mind. “We knew we had some work ahead of us and that we were going to build an addition to create a master bedroom suite on the first floor,” says Don. Most important for them was the usability of space. There was no downstairs bedroom or bath, and the kitchen was too small—two features that Don and Trish needed to address. Soon after they moved in they contacted the general contractor who had renovated the house in 1990,

Mike Killough. Don and Trish, who was a commercial interior designer, collaborated with Mike and Rick Yarnell, the architect to share their vision. n 2006 they worked with Mike and Rick to build their first-floor bedroom suite. “We wanted to maintain the historical character of the house,” Trish explains. All raw materials were repurposed, including salvaged and reclaimed wood beams and doors, as well as the use of stone from a nearby property. “My goal was to have as much exposed stone exterior walls as possible,” Trish adds. Exposed stone walls and a rich wood toned floor and ceiling create the illusion of an old room. These were the chosen elements that orchestrated the new master suite. A unique feature was constructed above the sleeping area that had an exposed stonewall backdrop. Rick created a dropped wood beam ceiling to add a sense of coziness to that space. The bedroom is appointed with their custom four-poster iron bed that would not fit up the stairs to the second floor. On the other side of the bedroom suite is a relaxing sitting area in front of a stone fireplace, done by Doug Kelough, who is a local stonemason. All the stone and wood accents in their newest addition blend perfectly with the rest of the house. This concept of earthy and rustic, to complement the original farmhouse, was a distinct part of their vision. The couple also was intent on expanding the kitchen, which they felt was too small. In 2017 the kitchen addition was constructed. Working with David Denson, the architect, and Al Giovino, the general contractor,

I

Trish drew up the plans.” Everything was designed to be exactly how we wanted to use it,” adds Don. Don and Trish love to entertain and Trish cooks a lot. “We wanted a new space where we had the room to gather,” Trish adds. To begin the renovation, the former kitchen, part of the prior owner's 1990 renovation, was torn up and converted into a cozy sitting room. To connect the addition and create a flow from old to new, an entrance from the dining room into the addition was created by removing a window from the exterior stonewall. This kitchen addition added the space they envisioned and met all of their needs. A wood-beamed cathedral ceiling and lots of windows appointed this room to establish an open, airy and expansive room. Continuing to establish that seamless and rustic element, the addition was designed with the original exterior stone walls as the backdrop. Natural wood floors and reclaimed ceiling beams add that rustic touch. “The challenge was how to put the old and new kitchen together,” Trish explains. To lend a sense of connection and flow, the transition from the old to the new kitchen was done with wall-to-wall wood beam and posts. This wood framing also became the opening from the sitting area into the new addition. With this framework in place, a room divider was created with a low sideboard cabinet, leaving the rest of the framework opened. Don and Trish were lucky to find Camilo Lopez, a master cabinetmaker, who designed and built all the kitchen cabinetry with Knotty Alder wood and furniture. A signature piece is the wood and glass cabinet Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2021

above a custom-made sideboard of Knotty Alder wood topped with oak, all built by Camilo. The cabinet is mounted on the stonewall and suspended from the ceiling beam. In designing the center island and cabinets, Camilo's skillful touch is evident in how he incorporated many of the modern amenities into the design without being visible. Most of these elements were built into the interior of the cabinetry. Even the refrigerator was disguised by housing it in a beautifully styled wood cabinet. For seating, alongside the open space of

A unique styling was done with the base constructed out of small trees. This infusion of natural materials adds a dimension of authenticity to the interior. Wood beamed ceilings, natural wood floors, exposed stone walls and distressed wood accent pieces appoint this home's living space. With all the elements used to renovate the home, this old farmhouse's facelift is undetectable. The artistry and craftsmanship that went into the two major renovations were so skillfully executed, with great attention to detail, every addition seamlessly complements the original living space. In addition to the interior modifications and transformations, Don and Trish took on

42

Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2021

several projects on the property. In 2008 the original bank barn was renovated. Records state the barn dates from the first quarter of the nineteenth century when Daniel Althouse owned the property. This threebay barn has stone-sided earthen bank with two additions on three sides. According to accounts, the barn was modernized for dairying sometime in the early twentieth century. To refurbish the barn they stripped all the stucco on the exterior and re-did the interior. “We tore up all the old, soggy floors,” Don adds,” and re-used them after re-treating the wood.” They describe how the original milking stanchions were in place, as well as the haymows. Today, the renovated barn is an entertainment space, with a music studio on the upper level. The main, center of the barn functions as the party area and upstairs they the music studio where the granary used to be. Upon retirement, Don decided to learn how to play the guitar. He and his band, the Barnacles, rehearse and record here. Aside from music as a newer hobby, Don always liked to fish. In 2010 they added a barn garage and a pond. “We filled the pond with bass, blue gills and cat fish,” Don adds. Whether indoors or out, Drumbore Farm has been transformed once again to fit the lifestyle of the newest residents. Don and Trish enjoy their lives on Drumbore Farm. Intimate gatherings and grand parties take place at this homestead frequently. “A place like this is meant to be shared,” Trish explains, “and life is short. We want people to come and enjoy.” Beth S. Buxbaum is a freelance writer from the Philadelphia area.

Paxson Hill Farm A 32-acre property in beautiful Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The farm is home to a plant nursery, animals and beautiful gardens By Bob Waite

T

he 32-acre Paxson Hills Farm is the home of a plant nursery, animals and an amazing garden that is considered one of the most beautiful and unique places to visit in Bucks County. The nursery grows various rare and exotic perennials, annuals and trees. ENSURING SUSTAINABILITY

his project is a great example of how to merge a 19th century wood framed farmhouse with a 1950’s addition and turn it into a 21st century masterpiece to enjoy for years to come. By opening up the floor plan and adding more glass to give the effect of bringing the outdoors in, Gemmi Construction created a more contemporary feel to the home overall while still capturing many of the original

62

Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2021

farmhouse elements. A major component was building a cupola light monitor. Located in the center of the living room, heat exhausts through natural convection, natural light is abundant, and it adds a beautiful aesthetic to the space. This is a great example of form and function as a centerpiece in a room. Supporting the design work by Ralph Fey Architects, Gemmi Construction

applied the proper means and methods to ensure sustainability in construction. This carried through to other areas of the home, such as the owner’s suite. With an existing chimney and the client’s taste for the contemporary, they added old stone to a modern fireplace. Once again, the Gemmi Construction team was able to work with the architect and their design to find creative solutions while respecting the function and construction of the fireplace. They also added original farmhouse beams to the ceil-

ing that they were able to reclaim from another part of the home. A special feature on the exterior is the unique trellis at the often used side entrance, echoing the natural surroundings of the property. With the client’s interest in reducing their carbon footprint, green building elements such as a full photovoltaic solar system and low voltage lighting were incorporated throughout this Stockton, New Jersey home. Most staging companies offer simple decor while our company likes to spice it up with fun colors and modern accents. Interior Designer Romina Ustayev was always a creative person. stagers to help sell his properties quicker. This inspired Romina to open a staging and interior design company, and now R&R Staging & Interior is taking over the staging market in the Philadelphia area with their unique and modern designs. his architectural design is a great example of what is possible when completely transforming an existing home. Conceived as a pastoral retreat from the clients’ New York City loft, it warranted a deep connection with nature, rich materials, and a breathable space. Elements of wood, stone, and metal create a tactile, warm atmosphere in the midst of high ceilings and unbounded views. The open twostory area is a modern expression of the

68

Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2021

barns of Bucks County with an open floor plan and a soaring, vaulted ceiling. The new residence sits on the existing foundation and while many improvements were made, the entry remains as a memento of the original home. In this new design by Ralph Fey Architects, the building grew in height, taking advantage of the tremendous views and embracing the moving sun at all points of the day. This project is one of two Bucks County

AIA (American Institute of Architects) awards received by Ralph Fey Architects in 2020. “Our vision is always to create successful projects for our clients”, says Ralph Fey. “We greatly appreciate the acknowledgement and recognition from our architectural design peers for the work that we do.” The thoughtful joining of spaces on the first floor creates a functional, livable floor plan where rooms are delineated by changes in height or gestures of exposed structure

while the staircase embraces the “modern farmhouse” feel with elements of steel and wood. The “barn” is evident in the overall shell of the house but with long spans of steel instead of traditional wood timber framing. The result is a space that breathes, ultimately providing all the light, views, and openness that a farmhouse rarely receives. What is it that creates an entrance, a home you want to come home to? “The view should feel welcoming. Many houses have plants that are located in ways that do not complement the architecture. There can be oversized shrubs blocking views of the house and doorway. Worst of all, are trees that were not planted in the right location.” (As seen in the two sets of before and after photos: Bushes were blocking entrance and stone detail. New landscap-

Existing walk is changed to a more natural flowing path reusing the original stone. We hid the A/C unit and built a trash can enclosure. Modified plant bed gives visual interest and color to the pathway to the backyard.) “The key to a successful renovation is to meld your style with realities of the site. Plants can stay where they are, be transplanted and some just need to go. It’s amazing how refreshing it can be to remove plants that were planted in the
