Bucks County Commissioners At Bucks County Free Library, we don’t just lend stories – we tell them, too. Every day at the library, we have seen hundreds of stories unfold at our branches: a child discovers the love of reading; a caregiver learns about resources for their aging parent; a nonprofit board meets in our conference room… Our 2019 story included the addition of bilingual storytimes to our children’s programs, Consumer Reports to our e-library and everything from DIY tools to outdoor games to party supplies to our physical catalog. At Bucks County Free Library it has always been our goal to be a part of your story, whether it was taking place in our branch, in your home office or in your backyard.
Message from the CEO
As of the publishing of this Annual Report, the world looks very different than it did this time last year. In fact, the reality of 2020 looks dramatically different than we had planned. The story that we’ll tell in our next Annual Report will most certainly be unlike one that we have ever told before. We have already faced a number of challenges, and we’ve worked hard to adapt to meet the community’s changing needs: allowing patrons to apply for e-cards and card renewals remotely, increasing our digital catalogs, expanding our virtual services and even making WiFi accessible in our parking lots. This is a new brand new chapter for us all, and we are grateful for the support that you have given that makes it possible for us to meet these new challenges head on. In the pages ahead, we celebrate last year’s accomplishments with the knowledge that our measurements for success will look quite different in the months ahead. That said, our mission remains eternally the same: to provide the services and resources necessary to improve and enhance your lives. Bucks County Free Library
Anyone in Bucks County knows that we are a community of neighborhoods, each with its own distinct history, traditions and personalities. While at Bucks County Free Library we want everyone to know that they are getting the same great experience no matter which branch they visit, we also take great pride in celebrating each branch and its surrounding community with different programs and events throughout the year. From smaller programs like chess tournaments and unplugged coding to large-scale community programs like author fairs and festivals, Bucks County Free Library hosted roughly 4,700 programs last year attended by nearly 143,150 people. In 2019, we hosted programs ranging from a day of performance art during our Spring Into the Arts festival at the Doylestown Branch to a comicinspired day of fun with the likes of Wonder Woman and Spiderman at the Quakertown Branch to a day of musical performances to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Woodstock at the Yardley Branch, which was attended by more than 800 people! In addition, we work year-round to take the library on the road and into the community through visits to schools, pop-up storytimes and local historical sites and businesses and presentations to various community groups and sponsors. We are so proud to represent Bucks County and all of the amazing communities within it. Community Events
Our popular six-week Summer Quest program launched on Saturday, June 22, 2019, with kick-off fairs at each branch! Roughly 2,643 people came to the library that day to pick up their summer reading logs and enjoy “giant” games, touch-a-truck programs, face painting and more. Throughout the summer, patrons participated in both a reading challenge and a long list of programs for community members of all ages. Our goal was to encourage summer learning, in addition to reading, to help children stay engaged throughout the summer months. Accordingly, we offered 1,343 different events throughout the county, which were attended by more than 53,500 people! Families enjoyed performers like Strongman Eric Moss, The Franklin Institute, the Center for Aquatic Sciences, acrobat Li Liu and much more! We worked hard to offer a diverse schedule of programs, introducing children to different cultures and topics, with hands-on, immersive experiences. Most importantly, we saw a lot of laughter and a lot of smiles!
Summer Quest
Participants also logged more than 1,000,000 minutes as part of the summer reading challenge! New in 2019, we partnered with Heifer International and gave participants the chance to earn votes to select an animal to send to a community in need. At the end of the summer, we were able to donate four goats, four colonies of honeybees, two sheep and one llama! We also handed out roughly 2,500 donated books to Summer Quest participants across the county courtesy of our Children’s Book Drive. In addition, with your help, we hosted our second annual Badge Design Contest, inviting Summer Quest participants of all ages to design their own badge for the Badge Squad program. After a competitive vote, the Map Mania! Badge by Anna Belasco was declared the winner and her design was released this past winter. Summer Quest
Imagine the roof on your home: you’ve maintained it, but even a well-maintained roof eventually needs replacing, and it’s time for a new one. Now imagine being told that the replacement will cost you roughly $800,000! That’s the problem Bucks County Free Library faced when the time came to replace the 31 year-old metal roof at the Doylestown Library last year. To complete the project, the library turned to the Keystone Recreation, Park, and Conservation Fund, and, with a strong application and voracious support from area legislators, received a significant Keystone Grant to help complete the project. Construction began the third week of October and lasted through January 2020. State Representative Wendy Ullman captured the sentiment and support of local legislators when she said, “These state grant monies aren’t just replacing a roof, but are ensuring that a vibrant part of the Doylestown community will thrive for years to come. A sign of a thriving community is a well-used library. I’m glad that the state is investing in Doylestown’s future with this grant.”

Among the many capital projects slated for the upcoming year, from façade fixes to server upgrades, we are constantly making improvements to our branches to ensure that you enjoy a comfortable visit with all the modern amenities necessary to meet your needs. With each passing year, our e-library increases in popularity, making up roughly 25% of our total circulation. In 2019, we added a brand new e-resource to our collection by giving patrons unlimited digital access to Consumer Reports online. For more than 80 years, the experts at Consumer Reports have provided unbiased, reliable information, ratings and reviews that help consumers make educated decisions. Now, your library card helps you to unlock more than 9,000 product and service reviews, money-saving tips and informative articles for free. Whether you’re in the market for new appliances, automobiles, electronics, products for kids and babies or even food, Consumer Reports provides smarter choices for a better world.
