Bison Good Sports

In 2006, the Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation announced its new “Bison Good Sports!” campaign, a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. The objective of the campaign, according to Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt “is to thank fans for the tremendous energy and enthusiasm they bring to each Bucknell athletics contest while also empowering them as caretakers of the collegiate gameday experience. While the extremes of unwanted behavior and its impact on home and visiting fans are not commonplace at Bison athletics events, Bucknell and our visiting teams ask for our fans’ help in keeping their support of our teams positive and cheer with positive encouragement, rather than supporting an atmosphere of intimidation that attempts to degrade opposing players and teams. We hope that our fans will continue to join our players, coaches and staff in helping all spectators find creative and ingenious ways to positively support our Bucknell student-athletes.”

Being A Bison

What it means to

be a bison

Bucknell truly offers the quintessential scholar-athlete experience with its unique combination of competitive Division I athletics and an intimate community atmosphere while still holding high academic achievement as paramount. Every day I am thankful for the opportunity that has been presented to me to play the sport I love, while creating lasting memories and friendships as well as earning a degree from a highly respected institution. The lessons I have learned both in the classroom and on the field combine seamlessly to make me a better student and athlete. Everyone at Bucknell from the faculty to the coaching staff cares deeply about the experience athletes have at Bucknell and work tirelessly to ensure that a balance between athletics and academics is achieved. I feel extremely privileged to be a Bucknell student-athlete.

The term “student-athlete signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a wellrounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation Mission Statement

The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of studentathletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 10 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2009, Bucknell ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 118 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 255 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.

In addition to the 118 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 293 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 17 more in 2009-10.

With a school-record-tying eight Patriot League championships in 200910, Bucknell has now earned 81 crowns in 20 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 109 conference players of the year, 89 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 491 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2010.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 16 times in the 20-year history of the affiliation, including 12 of the last 13 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2009-10. It was the 13th straight year and the 16th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2009-10, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s indoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, baseball and softball. Additionally, the women’s water polo team captured the CWPA Southern Division championship, and the wrestling team sent four student-athletes to the NCAA Championships and produced two All-Americans.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections with 118.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total studentathlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Season Preview Bucknell field hockey put together one of the most successful finishes in program history last season, but the Bison are far from resting on past accomplishments as they enter a new chapter. After claiming a piece of the 2009 Patriot League regular-season title for the first time, Bucknell is back with the determination to take that success to another level Corinne Raczek & through solid leadership and a Christine Weiss demanding schedule. While seniors Kelly Bruvik and Corinne Raczek earned the squad’s captains positions last spring, Bucknell is able to rely on a number of its student-athletes from the freshmen up through the seniors for leadership as well. “Both of them really stepped up last spring and really showed what they have to offer,” head coach Jeremy Cook said of Bruvik and Raczek. “We have really strong leadership from that whole group, and one of the things that I think they’re discovering coming through this preseason is that we have really strong leadership qualities in all of our classes. We went to the CLIMBucknell ropes course, and it was just phenomenal how people stepped up and were willing to share the burden of the responsibility of leading the group from within every class. Those two (Bruvik and Raczek) have the badges, but we have a team of leaders.” The Bison will need to step up in a big way as they begin one of the most ambitious schedules in recent years. In addition to NCAA Tournament qualifier Indiana, Bucknell has added the Ivy League’s Harvard and Princeton, which advanced to the NCAA Final Four in 2009, to its non-conference slate. A number of other nationally ranked opponents make the Bison’s schedule as well, ensuring a challengepacked fall that will hopefully result in strong Patriot League results down the road. “It sets a tone for the rest of the year and for the four years that our freshmen are going to be here. I wanted to play those games because I am trying to send a bit of a message about what the best hockey in this country really is and what that looks like,” said Cook, who is entering his third season as the Bison’s head coach. “As much as we talk about tempo and speed and execution rates at practice, [when you get] on the field with one of the best teams in the country, you see it and you see how it’s being effective. “I think that a tougher schedule sets you up for conference games in a much better way. Now we’ll have practice playing teams that are at and above American University’s level instead of having that as one of our marquee games of the year.” Bucknell’s senior class will hope that it does not have to wait long to reap the benefits of such a difficult schedule. The team’s lone loss in the Patriot League during the 2009 regular season came against American, a squad the Bison last beat in 2001. Helping to put an end to the trend are Raczek, Christine Weiss and Morgan Kauffman. Together the trio anchored the group that led the Patriot League in penalty corners last season, and Bucknell will look for a repeat performance in 2010. The three also combined for three selections to All-Patriot League teams and two league All-Tournament Team nods at the conclusion of the year. Raczek and Kauffman will face a bit of friendly competition in each other as well as both are vying for the program’s assist record. Entering their final campaign, Raczek ranks second all-time at the university with 27, while Kauffman is tied for third with 26. Jeremy Cook “They’re one away from each other,

6

and they’re probably just going to continue that,” predicted Cook. “I think both of them will generate a lot of offense this year.” The pair also own first through fourth place on the single-season assists list, while Kauffman is 12th in career points with 54. Bucknell will also be looking for big production from its deep junior class. After seeing limited playing time during her first two years in the Orange and Blue, Sarah Zargarpour will take over the starting goalkeeper duties, thanks in part to her committed efforts during the offseason. “She really worked hard over the summer. She did a lot of lifting and conditioning here on campus, and it’s paying off,” said Cook. “Her confidence is at a high. She’s communicating well, she’s moving well, making a lot of saves and keeping the ball down, which is really positive for her.” Marci Richard and Mallory Smith also return this fall in outstanding physical shape and are expected to continue making their mark on the front line. Richard brings a superior work ethic and speed to the Bison, while Smith adds playmaking abilities to the group. Morgan Kauffman “Her confidence and her game understanding have grown as she’s grown up with the position,” said Cook of Smith. “She’s technically very sound and one of the most creative players that we have.” Kate Bowen and Caroline Coady round out the group defensively but, on a roster with such a wealth of talent, will have to battle for their share of playing opportunities despite their experience. “[Bowen’s] confidence has increased over the last couple of years, and she’s getting better at playing with power,” said Cook. “Coady is also competing for time in the back. She’s a very powerful player.” Highlighting the sophomore group are Tayler Siegrist and Katie Durkin. Durkin saw plenty of action in her debut campaign, a trend likely to continue despite being forced to overcome some offseason injuries. Siegrist spent her summer dedicated to field hockey and the commitment shows. Siegrist established herself as one of the leading rookies in the Patriot League last season, both on the field and as a top javelin thrower with the Bucknell track and field team. She then earned a spot with the Junior National Camp after leading the Pennsylvania squad to a High Performance Championships title. Siegrist’s additional playing time was made evident as preseason camp opened, and the sophomore looks to maintain a hold on her starting position from last fall. Bucknell’s newest additions hit the ground running in the team’s early days of training and are eager to make their presence felt. “The freshman class has just been outstanding. They’ve come in, and they’re leading the team in a whole bunch of areas,” praised Cook. “Their fitness level is tremendous. They all came in absolutely ready to play and as committed and intense as we need them to be.” Among those expected to make an immediate impact are Rachel Misko and Hannah Jones. Both forwards, Misko boasts strong fundamentals and decision making. Jones, who is also a sprinter with the Bucknell track team, brings outstanding speed to the field. Vickie Resh is also a welcome addition to the midfield unit, thanks largely due to her unselfish play and field vision. “She’s been a phenomenal addition to the team because of how smart she is, how she sets up space and how well she sees the field,” said Cook. “She’s one of those players who is just a joy to play with because you know whenever you need her, she’s going to be in the right spot and she’s going to give you the ball back every time you give it to her.” The freshmen will have their first opportunity to join the veterans in a true game situation Aug. 28-29 when the Bison open their season on the road with Temple and St. Joseph’s. Bucknell then returns to its home Graham Field on Sept. 4 for a bout with Albany before eventually opening its Patriot League schedule a month later at Holy Cross.

Graduate Assistant Coach Holy Cross ’09 Second Season Erin Singleton, a three-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, joined the Bucknell staff in the summer of 2009. Singleton recently completed her degree in psychology at Holy Cross. In her final season with the Crusaders, Singleton recorded a 7-11 record in goal with a 3.12 goals against average and a .773 save percentage, which ranked 12th nationally. Her 8.5 saves per game also ranked third in the country. Singleton led the Patriot League in shutouts and goals against average as a sophomore before leading the league in saves, saves per game and save percentage as a senior. During her career, the Amesbury, Mass., native earned three First Team All-Patriot League selections. Her trio of Goalkeeper of the Year honors marked the first time a student-athlete had claimed the league’s award more than once. Away from the field, Singleton was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and the NFHCA National Academic Squad. Singleton is currently pursuing her master’s degree in sports psychology at Bucknell.

Nate Franks

Volunteer Assistant Coach Princeton ’07 First Season Nate Franks joined the Bucknell staff as a volunteer prior to the start of the 2010 season. Franks’ most recent coaching assignment came at American University where he served as an assistant from 2007-09. His tenure with the Eagles was not his first time on the sideline, however. While pursuing his degree in political science from Princeton, Franks also served as a manager and student assistant coach from 2003-07. During that stretch, the Tigers earned three Ivy League titles and made an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. As a player, Franks trained with U.S. Men’s Field Hockey in 2002 and most recently spent two seasons with the Clontarf Hockey Club in Ireland. The only American to ever play with the club, Franks helped the squad to a fifth-place finish indoors in 2010.

About Bucknell

The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 16 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 20 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 118 Academic All-Americans since 1970 and 118 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 20 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholarathlete model. The 2003 addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members

of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The new construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; and the spacious West Fields Complex, which encompasses Depew Field (baseball), Varsity Softball Field and the adjoining Graham Field (Astroturf for field hockey and women’s lacrosse) and Emmitt Field (natural grass for soccer) at Holmes Stadium that now features a new stadium/press box facility.

Life After Bucknell

Graduates of Bucknell University have the highest earning potential in the nation, a new research survey revealed in July 2008. The 2008 Education and Salary Report, prepared and released by Seattlebased PayScale Inc., named Bucknell graduates No. 1 among graduates of top U.S. liberal arts colleges by salary potential. The top liberal arts college category showed that the starting median salary for Bucknell graduates was $54,100, while the mid-career median salary was $110,000. Bucknell was followed by Colgate University at $52,800 and $108,000 and Amherst at $54,500 and $107,000, respectively. The salary report, the fi rst issued by the company, also ranked Bucknell 13th among all Northeastern colleges and universities for salary potential. Dartmouth College, Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University, and Harvard University were Nos. 1-5, respectively. Except for Cooper Union (No. 9), Bucknell was the only predominantly undergraduate institution in the top 14 in this category. National Reputation A number of recent reports have served to underscore Bucknell’s national reputation: • In 2007, The Washington Monthly ranked Bucknell No. 7 among the best liberal arts colleges in the country when it comes to fostering research and promoting an ethic of service and social mobility. • In 2008, the Peace Corps listed Bucknell at No. 6 on its top 25 list of small colleges and universities producing Peace Corps Volunteers. • In 2008, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine rated Bucknell as the 11th best value in private liberal arts colleges.

The Plan for Bucknell

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. To read the complete version of The Plan for Bucknell or to request a published version, see http://www. bucknell.edu/ThePlanforBucknell.
