FROM THE CITY MANAGER

In December 3, 2018, I had the privilege of beginning my service as Brownsville City Manager. It is my honor and pleasure to be serving the community during this exciting time.

The city has several major projects going on such as the Airport Terminal expansion, improvements to the Brownsville Metro transit system, and continued developed of our trail system for enhancing the quality of life in the community. These investments are important for supporting continued growth.

My focus in the first 100 days is to support these ongoing projects, while building relationships in the community. To that end, I will be spending time meeting with various community stakeholders to learn more about what works, what could work better, and what is next for Brownsville.

“Our generation has the ability and the responsibility to make our ever more connected world a more hopeful, stable and peaceful place.”

The KBB Youth Advisory Board is a local framework for youth engagement, building on KBB’s model of local youth service. The Youth Advisory Board members provide an original point of view in assessing Keep Brownsville Beautiful programs, implement local service projects, and act as ambassadors and leaders for youth engagement and service in their respective school and throughout the community. Members will also pilot new programs and events.

Do you have a unique skill or knowledge of a subject and are looking for a great way to give back to the community? Help share that knowledge by volunteering to present your life experiences, skills, and interests with your community. There are a number of ways your unique talents can be applied through volunteering with the City of Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department.

Whether you’d like to work with kids or at events, lend your technology skills to aide seniors, or apply your attention to detail assisting with special projects, there’s something for everyone in our volunteer program! If you are interested in volunteering please dial (956) 275-1063.

Voted Best Value for Golf in the RGV

The Brownsville Golf Center is an 18 hole golf course. The original design had a total playing yardage of 6,144 yards. We have large manicured Bermuda greens with a favorable holding play-ability for your approach shots. Our fairways have a good amount of grass and we are not a hard-pan course.

We have some elevated T-Boxes and moderately elevated greens, nothing too difficult, but no green is flat. The course Slope and Rating is 69.9/123 from the back tees 67.3/116 (middle) and woman’s tees 70.3/122. There are ponds and small lakes that come into play to some degree on 50% of the fairways. The course design will test your iron game and approach shots to the greens.

There is an outdoor pavilion to enjoy, along with a practice putting green and a chipping green. The Brownsville Golf Center is the best value for golf anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley and is one of the best kept courses in the area.

BROWNSVILLE AQUATICS The City of Brownsville Parks & Recreation Department offers affordable aquatics programs and amenities to swimmers of all ages and abilities. Our aquatics facilities are open to the public during the summer months. Look forward to safe aquatic activities such as swim lessons, swim team (TAAF), lap swimming, and Aqua Aerobics.

Largest Sports Park in the Rio Grande Valley.

The Brownsville Sports Park located at 1000 Sports Park BLVD, is a significant contributor to the quality of life in Brownsville and plays a large role in the area of social and economic impact for the community. Nowhere else in temperate Rio Grande Valley will you find a sports complex that can host multiday tournaments, entertainment fairs, local and international championships, regular leagues, tournaments, wrestling and musical concerts. The Sports Park also features room for upwards of 5000 guests for any event, convention, trade show, corporate retreats, company sports days and so much more.

With over 650,000 visitors, this new and innovative sports park is the largest of its kind in the Rio Grande Valley. Accommodations include practices, league play, camps, tournaments and large events with over 200,000 visitors. The Brownsville Sports Park will play host to the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Games of Texas Championship in 2022-23, and hosts leagues ranging from Pickle-ball, Basketball, Football, Baseball, Softball, and more.

Brownsville Youth Athletics The Parks and Recreation Department Youth Sports Programs offers flag football leagues, basketball programs, and volleyball leagues. In addition to leagues, a variety of youth sports clinics/camps are offered throughout the year, especially during the summer months, and provide positive and healthy experiences for area youth.

Youth Sports Organizations within the City of Brownsville operate youth sports leagues at various Parks and Recreation facilities. These leagues are operated by volunteers and work separately from the Parks and Recreation Department Youth Sports Program.

If your child is not on a team please contact the office so that your child may be added to the Free Agent List. If you are registering a team you must contact the office via phone or email to gather the team registration forms. If a child is on a team and the team is registered for the season, payments will be accepted by online via RecDesk. Please call our offices at (956) 275-1324 for assistance.

LOWER RIO GRANDE VALLEY ACTIVE PLAN Sponsored by The Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation and the University of Texas School of Public Health—as well as the cities of Brownsville, Harlingen, Combes, Los Fresnos, Los Indios, Port Isabel, San Benito, South Padre Island, and the towns of Laguna Vista and Rancho Viejo—the Active Plan comprises 428 miles of trails—including 230 miles of multiuse trails, 120 miles of U.S. Bicycle Routes and 78 miles of paddling trails that will showcase the vast, expansive beauty of the region’s beaches, wildlife preserves, waterways, cultural sites and geographic landmarks.

At its core, the Active Plan leverages the community’s commitment to local economic development in a county with one of the highest poverty rates in the country—and is designed to tap into the rapidly expanding market for “active tourism” to support job creation and small business activity and encourage tourist spending that injects money into local economies.
