What is Leukaemia and it's treatment Leukaemia is a group of cancer usually caused by damage to white blood cells in the body. These white blood cells are also known as leukocytes. When someone has Leukaemia, a large number of abnormal white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow. They cannot perform a proper role or protecting body against various disease. When the leukaemia progresses, the infection interferes with the production of other blood cells in the body such as red blood platelets and cells. This can result in anaemia, bleeding problems, and other related abnormalities caused by the white cell. Different types of leukaemia The leukaemia can be categorised into acute and chronic conditions. Acute leukemia is mostly caused in children. It is divided into acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

What are the causes of leukaemia? Although, there is no obvious cause of leukaemia. It is cancer which produces abnormal white blood cells that means that the body is likely to defend itself against the infection. These cells are knowns are leukaemia cells those are not fully developed.

Genetic factors: it is a down syndrome caused in children when they are born due to genetic order. This type of cancer is typically known as chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. Radiation: Leukaemia can happen to people exposed to intense radiation. Chemicals: Workers exposed to chemicals are in high risk of acute myeloid leukemia. Smoking cigarettes can also cause risk of acute myeloid leukemia. Country of origin: In some part of the world, south-west Japan, parts of Africa, or Caribbean, a particular type of leukemia is very common in the region.

There are no certain symptoms which can give a doctor an assurity without lab test diagnosis. In a majority of all type of leukaemia, it caused due to lack of presence of blood cells. This can lead to: ● ● ● ● ●

Leukaemia Treatment

It can be treated in five different ways listed below: ●

Chemotherapy: It is a procedure of cell killing with the use of drugs to damage or stop the cells from dividing. This treatment is often given in cycles, where one cycles can consist of a series of chemotherapy doses followed by a break for cells to recover and become healthy.

Radiation therapy: This type of Lymphoma Treatment uses the high energy of radiation to kill the cells of cancer. However, it is not used for killing all types of leukaemia.

Stem cell transplant: It is also known as Bone Marrow Transplant in Uganda where the patient is given a stem cell transplant which is done using the won healthy stem cells or from a donor.

Targeted therapy: It this type of therapy, drugs is used which especially recognize and kill the cells of leukemia.

Biological therapy: It is a Leukaemia Treatment which is use the body immune system to destroy the unwanted cells of leukemia.
