Dear All,

Music is often the soundtrack to our lives and I’m delighted that we are able to feature local choirs, jazz and rock concerts in this month’s issue. There is nothing like live music to boost your mood and get your feet tapping – and this applies across the ages!

Discos and parties are also back and as Halloween and Christmas approach you may be planning a celebration at home or in a local venue. Do go and visit our village halls and community spaces – there are so many to choose from and they have brilliant facilities.

For the music, if you don’t want live music do think about a DJ. We all know that playlists are plentiful, but a DJ can make sure you have the music you like so the party goes with a bang. I know this because my husband Jim is a DJ, aka DJ Sunnyside, and he gets so many comments from people who say he “made” the party sing because he played the right music at the right time, and everyone felt included (even those who didn’t dance!).

A former teacher and lawyer - he is not your typical DJ but he knows how to read a room and change the mood and the beat to make sure everyone is happy whether it’s a 10 year-old birthday disco or a 60th celebration party. No automatic playlist can do that. Enjoy October and your music. And I know I am biased but if you need a DJ contact DJ Sunnyside on jdc24stewart@gmail.com or 07961 447313. You won’t regret it!

Best wishes, Kate

SAVE OUR POST OFFICE BY

You’ve probably seen that Felpham Post Office and Village Stores is on the market. I do hope that some young couple buy it to run as a lifestyle business just like previous post masters and mistresses, but what should we do if that is not what happens?

I’ve been thinking of a potential idea, and I have shared it with some local residents who have received it with enthusiasm – but first let me introduce myself properly.

I was born in Felpham, educated and grew up here before moving away to work. After 50 years away during which I maintained close ties with the village, I have moved back – into a house my grandmother tried to buy in 1943 (the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, apparently!).

I have early memories of the post office. I went to nursery school in Admiralty Road, and by the time I was four I used to walk by myself to meet my grandmother at the triangle at Hayley’s Corner – it was the 1950’s! On Thursdays I would collect her pension from the Post Office and carry it very carefully back to her. I did a paper round at 12 and bought sneaky packs of cigarettes as a teenager.

My mother, also born in Felpham, continued to live here until 2014. She was a founding member of the local history society, and wrote many local history books, including Felpham Matters, which was sold at the Post Office. You might remember her – Sheila Gould, she may well have taught many of you or your relatives.

Like my grandparents and parents before me, I love Felpham. I am passionate that the village should keep its heart, and I believe that the Post Office is an integral part of that.

So now to my idea.

I propose a community project to purchase and run the Post Office and Stores on a fulltime basis, renting out permanent cabins in the garden for small local start-up businesses, holiday letting part of the house, maybe a community art space …. With such a vibrant and diverse community to support in Felpham, the opportunities are endless.

With 1,000 people buying a share in a Community Interest Company for £1,000 each, this could be made possible. And our village has a history of this – the Memorial Village Hall was built in the 1950s with a buy a brick for £10 scheme! Any profits would get fed back into the project or help pay for other amenities needed in the village.

If you are interested in the group that is developing this idea, or being informed of further developments, please get in touch with me – a project like this will only succeed by the strength of the people involved.

LOCAL HISTORY BY SYLVIA

ROYAL NAVY SCHOOL OF PHOTOGRAPHY - FELPHAM

As you stroll through Middleton, do you wonder what secrets lay hidden? Do you know where the Royal Navy School of Photography was situated?

During the Second World War, it would appear that the Admiralty acquired a number of empty properties on the Summerley estate, around Second, Third, Fourth Ave, Limmer Lane and the Strand appeared to be the central.

From the information received, meals were taken at a home in Limmer Lane whilst Second Ave, was then used for accommodation. One home was occupied by forty students, their furniture consisted of bunk beds, chairs and tables and were of basic Admiralty issue.

The students four-month course during 1944 was where they qualified and conducted air photography for Royal Navy use. The students used an Avro Anson aircraft and took turns in going into the nose cone where the F24 Camera was mounted on a cradle for their use.

One student recalled that they were paid 21s. per week and paid fortnightly. On arrival at Bognor Regis Railway station, they were instructed to march to the school, a distance of approx. five miles. There was a mobile WRVS canteen which visited during the weekends to allow them to purchase chocolate bars and stationery; this supplemented their meals which were cooked by Wrens.

Travelling away from Felpham was forbidden and their leisure activities were held around the homes but occasionally they went to either The Fox or Thatch for ‘refreshment.’

‘The RAF Heritage Group / The Retirement of the Tornado’

Presented by Sqn Ldr Rick Lipscomb

Sqn Ldr Rick Lipscomb will give this presentation which combines two stories into one. It is about a factor of the RAF that little is known about and will be of interest to anyone with a passion for history or aviation in general. His talk will look at the work of the RAF Heritage Group in ensuring the preservation and sharing of the RAF’s history and story-telling. He will focus particularly on the retirement of Tornado, but also include RAF station closures, gate guards, artwork, silverware and medals. The retirement of the Tornado after 30 years of distinguished service, prompted great interest from the media and from museums wishing to acquire an example.

Rick will explain as to how all of these items are sought, how it is decided which museums, both RAF and civil, they will be moved to, and how these items are actually moved, many by large road transport.

AirACES is an aviation talk society, providing its members with regular talks, given by experts in many different fields related to the world of aviation. The talks are held at the Chichester Park Hotel, Westhampnett Road, Chichester 7pm for 7.30 start. Members £5, visitors £7 and under 16s FREE. Doors open at 6.45pm no pre-booking, no reserved seating For further information about AirACES, please see www.airaces.org.uk, or call David Batcock on 01243 823007.

ANCIENT TREES AND FALLOW DEER

A 6.5 km (4 miles) circular walk through the beautiful Petworth Park. A great time to visit is in the autumn when the leaves are changing colours and England’s largest collection of fallow deer can be heard rutting.

• The trek starts in the car park (furthest north from the house) and sets out in a westerly direction on the path leading out of the woods and into the rolling terrain of the park. Much of the park’s landscape has been laid out by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, in particular the ponds and the strategically planting of many of the trees.

• Cross over the spring that supplies water to the upper and lower ponds via several miles of underground drains and tunnels and continue past Shepherds Lodge, heading up the hill to Upperton Tower. The tower, also known as ‘The Monument’ was built in 1816 at a point where the main house could just be seen. Although referred to as ‘The Monument’ it does not commemorate anything and there is very little history on this building. It sits at 125m, the highest point in the park and has some terrific views of the Sussex countryside beyond.

• Admiring the views retrace your steps and follow the contours around a natural bowl in the landscape to a steep decent down to the stony track. Many of the fallow deer can be seen much closer here as it tends to be a quieter part of the park. Follow the path south which gradually rises and on reaching the top Tillington Church Tower can be seen in the distance and the Upper Pond will also come into view. Head towards the pond taking the grassy path down to the waters edge.

• The Upper Pond was redesigned between 1752 - 1756 and to create the pond Capability Brown built a dam across the valley. The upper pond was captured by Turner in one of his pictures called ‘Dewy Morning’. As you descend it is clearly seen that the pond is designed to simulate a river flowing through the landscape.

• Follow the iron fence around the pond to the unusual boathouse (also built by Brown in 1756), on top of the boathouse is a platform where views across the pond, it’s wildfowl and sussex countryside can be seen, look over the edge to see a ‘Neptune head’ sculpture embedded into the wall above the arches that was taken from the house.

• Head away from the Upper Pond on the Lawns toward the house with it’s air of grandeur and prominence on the landscape. The wrought Iron gates lead to the ‘Pleasure Grounds’, designed to inspire a range of emotions, take some time here to discover the Doric temple, Ionic Rotunda and war memorial. Petworth House was built in 1682 and for an additional fee the house can be entered to see the many state rooms including paintings by well known artists.

• Once back in the park, follow the wall that borders the pleasure grounds and here can be seen the oldest oak in the park at 940 years old. Some recent archaeology has revealed what is thought to be the remains of the Henry VIII banqueting or hunting lodge in the area just before the descent to Lower Pond.

• Just past the pond was once the site of an army camp for American and Canadian airman. Post war it was used as a resettlement camp for displaced Polish families up until 1959. There is no evidence left of the camp and the entrances in the wall have long been filled in.

• On the last stretch back to the car park look out for the ‘Beelzebub Oak’ which dates back to 1779 and marks the parish boundary, the name derives from a superstition that ‘beyond the parish boundary the land was spiritually suspect’.

CONSERVATION SUCCESS

Which stylish, black and white bird that features on the RSPB logo can you see around Pagham Harbour and Medmerry?

It is, of course, the avocet – a particularly striking and elegant wader with bold black and white wing patterns which you can fully appreciate when you see it in flight. It has a black cap which continues down its neck, and legs which have a bluish tone to them. But the most distinctive feature of the avocet is the upward curve of its long slender bill which you may see it sweeping from side to side to catch its dinner of worms and crustaceans.

So why is this bird used as the RSPB emblem? Why not a robin or a blackbird or other favourite British bird? The answer lies in a conservation success story dating back to World War II.

The avocet became extinct in the UK in the nineteenth century when hunting, egg collection and the fashion for wearing feathers were prolific. It was during World War II that the conditions for breeding avocets were accidentally recreated on the Suffolk coastal marshes when they were deliberately flooded as a defence against enemies. In 1947 when sea sluice operations were resumed, the drained land revealed reed beds, brackish pools and drainage channels – the perfect environment for waders such as the avocet. In the same year, the RSPB took over the management of this site at Minsmere and, as result of their work, avocets began to successfully breed again in the UK.

the Ferry Pool at RSPB Pagham Harbour, through October.

Nowadays, avocets are resident in various areas of the country with an estimated 1,950 breeding pairs. For a species that was extinct in the UK 75 years ago – that’s pretty amazing! At RSPB Medmerry’s Stilt Pools, they have been breeding since 2014; this year 14 young birds hatched.

Back in 1970, the RSPB logo was a simple black and white image of the avocet; you will see now that it still uses the avocet but has blue and green incorporated into it – colours which represent the land, sea and sky.

Learn more about the birds and wildlife of the RSPB’s Pagham Harbour and Medmerry reserves on our family-friendly half-term events or one of our other special guided events this October. Find out more by visiting our website https://events.rspb.org.uk/paghamharbour or call 01243 641508.

50 SHADES … THE NEUTRAL COLOUR TREND FOR AUTUMN

If you’re a fan of neutrals, you’re in luck this season! Grey is a big colour trend on the catwalks and is filtering into the shops as we speak. A flattering neutral on most people regardless of your palette, but as ever, it’s how you wear it that’s important.

Charcoal grey is a universal shade in terms of colour analysis (the system of finding out which shades suit your personal colouring best). It’s a kinder alternative to black, which can be a little harsh on some people – especially those with warmth to their look and very light blondes. I think it’s also a very classy colour, and can be worn on its own, or with other neutrals like soft white for a chic look. I love this soft ruched knit from Massimo Dutti (right).

For a more casual look, this denim maxi skirt (left) from Mint Velvet is the ideal transitional piece for this in-betweeny weather. If you’re not sure if grey suits you, keeping it on the bottom half is a safe bet as its away from your face and will go with pretty much any other colour top you care to pair with it!

Fancy a lighter shade of grey? This jacket by Rochelle (right) at Next is ideal for those with fairer and cool colouring. It also hits two trends in one, as the bomber has been a massive street style look recently and most high street stores are offering up at least one option.

As ever, there’s always the option to bring in a colour trend with accessories. A silver-grey belt like this croceffect one from Oliver Bonas (left) will freshen up an old pair of jeans or modernise a simple pair of tailored trousers.

I’m a big fan of grey footwear. Often, we default to black for shoes, but it doesn’t always go with everything as much as people think, and it can be too strong a contrast if your outfit is a more delicate colour palette. So, a soft grey, like these boots from Jones the Bootmaker (right) could be a great addition to your wardrobe.

A note about hair; for you silver-haired beauties, grey is often a great colour for your wardrobe as it suits cool palettes. The trick is to get the right tone and depth, and to be wary of a head-to-toe look or you may disappear! Often a contrasting colour such as hot pink (another trend thanks to the Barbie effect!) works well with the grey.

If you want to know more about the best way to wear grey, along with the other key trends this season, come along to one of my STYLE UPDATE sessions. I’m running these over four dates in October (3rd, 6th, 11th & 12th) and tickets are just £29.95. For more info and to book your place, email me at vicky@vickybooker.com or check out my website www.vickybooker.com/category/ events/ hope to see you there!

BLUE IS BEAUTIFUL BY

Gentians have a reputation for being tricky little things to grow and it isn’t entirely undeserved. They’re a temperamental lot. They will only grow from fresh seed; they require the gardener to jump through hoops to get them to germinate; they don’t like being transplanted; they insist on free-draining but not impoverished soil...the list goes on. But those gorgeous ultra-marine trumpet flowers are so desirable, especially at this time of year when not much else is flowering.

I’ve had my fair share of failures with autumn gentians over the years but still I keep trying to grow them.

Like most of us I haven’t the time to devote to primping and preening the truly diva-ish varieties: those are best left to alpine devotees. I’ve had most success with Gentian sino-ornata. These form low growing clumps some 15cm / 6inches high and 30cm / 12inches across. In the right conditions they will produce gorgeous bright blue trumpets with pale green stripes from September all the way to November.

Gentians prefer shade for at least part of the day and, I can’t stress this bit enough, there must be no lime in the soil, or they’ll turn up their pretty blue toes and expire. Unfortunately, as I garden in an area rich in limestone, (our house is actually built on a limestone ridge!) the only way I can grow them is in low, dish-shaped containers where they can spread out a bit. If you’re making up your own pots, use ericaceous compost with added grit to promote drainage. An even easier way to grow them is to buy them ready-potted. Garden centres will sell them at this time of year.

In spite of their fussiness, they are hardy perennials. If you can get them established they’ll proliferate. In the garden divide them carefully, disturbing the roots as little as possible, every three years in the spring. If you’re growing them in pots then at the start of spring carefully scrape out some of the top compost and redress it with ericaceous compost. Keep it moist and in a partially shaded area and the flowers should return in the autumn. When the pot looks overcrowded you can try splitting them once the flowering season is over but often it is better just to buy new plants.

The trouble with gentians is that they’re addictive. Grow a few successfully and you’ll get greedy for those startling blue flowers and want more. Then you’ll start to think, ‘I wonder if they really are that difficult to grow from seed…’ and you’re lost.

Happy gardening.

ROAM WITH A HOME

IS A CAMPER VAN RIGHT FOR YOU?

BY

The Motorhome and Caravan Show is on at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre this month (17-22 October). If you’ve ever hankered after life on the open road there is lots of choice, from day campers to micro campers and motorhomes.

Day campers - Camper vans or Class B motorhomes are compact vehicles for 2-4 people. They can be used for both daily commuting and weekend getaways. They feature basic amenities like sleeping space, a small kitchen, and sometimes a bathroom and are a great introduction to the world of camper vans.

Micro campers are even more compact, focusing on essential amenities while maintaining an easyto-drive profile. They are ideal for solo travellers or couples seeking cost-effective adventure. Despite their much smaller size, micro campers can still offer a comfortable sleeping area and a functional kitchenette, though you might have to stand outside to cook.

Motorhomes are larger, spacious, and wellequipped mobile homes, from Class C, with attached cabins to the luxurious Class A type which resemble buses. Motorhomes provide the most comprehensive amenities, including full kitchens, bathrooms, and even entertainment systems. They’re suitable for families or individuals looking for a more comfortable and extended travelling experience.

Motorhomes and campervans definitely offer the freedom to explore new places while having your accommodation readily available, allowing for spontaneous detours and unique experiences. In a motorhome the journey becomes an integral part of the holiday, encouraging you to take the scenic route and discover hidden gems along the way.

Enthusiasts will extol the cost-efficiency of motorhomes and campers. It’s true that they can save you money on accommodation and dining expenses. With a kitchen on board, there is the option to prepare your own meals, reducing the need to eat out, but…campervans and particularly motorhomes can be extremely expensive. New models can come in over £30000! That would pay for a fair few self-catering holidays, so if you only plan to use your motorhome once a year you might be better staying in a luxury lodge for a fortnight.

You also need to consider that regardless of the size, camper vans have limited living space compared to traditional homes. This requires careful organization and packing skills, plus an ability to get along very well with any travelling companions.

Maintaining any motorhome involves regular upkeep, storage, and servicing, and this can be more expensive than a regular vehicle.

Motorhomes can also be challenging to manoeuvre and park, especially in crowded areas, multistorey car parks or on narrow roads.

If you’re still keen, establish a budget before you start shopping. Decide which amenities are essential for your comfort and convenience. If a full bathroom or a spacious kitchen is high up on your list of priorities, accept that you are not going to get away with a micro camper.

Before committing it’s wise to rent the size and model you are considering for a few days to see whether it suits your needs. You might decide that the motorhome holiday is not for you…or you might just kickstart a whole new lifestyle.

THE FEAR FASCINATION

The psychology behind why we enjoy (or don’t enjoy) horror movies

It’s Halloween, and horror movie suggestions are once again popping up on Netflix and Amazon. Horror movies have been captivating audiences for decades, drawing us into a world of the unknown, terror, and suspense. Why do so many of us sign up to being scared out of our wits while others avoid the horror genre at all costs.

One of the reasons many individuals find pleasure in a good horror movie is linked to our innate thrill-seeking tendencies. The human brain craves novelty and excitement, and horror films provide a controlled environment for allowing us to experience fear and excitement without real danger. The rush of adrenaline and the heightened sense of awareness during suspenseful scenes can be exhilarating, triggering our “fight or flight” response even though there’s no actual real threat.

Horror movies also offer a unique form of catharsis, a release of built-up emotions and stress. By immersing ourselves in a fictional world of horror, we can experience a range of intense emotions in a safe environment. This emotional rollercoaster can be oddly satisfying, allowing us to confront our fears and anxieties vicariously through the characters on screen.

Paradoxically, humans seek out fearinducing experiences as a way to gain a sense of control over their emotions. When watching a horror movie, we have the ability to pause, fast forward, or even turn off the film if things become too intense. This sense of control over our environment reassures us that we’re not in any real danger, making the fear more manageable and enjoyable. The human mind is also naturally curious, and horror movies tap into this by presenting mysteries, puzzles, and unexplained phenomena.

For some people, watching horror movies provides an opportunity to face and conquer their fears in a controlled context. The adrenaline rush and subsequent relief of surviving the fear can create a sense of empowerment and triumph.

On the flip side, there are individuals who adamantly avoid horror movies. Their psychological profile is usually very different to their horror-loving peers.

People with heightened sensitivity to stimuli might find horror movies overwhelming. Some people’s nervous systems react more strongly to fear-inducing scenes, leading to discomfort or anxiety. Individuals who have suffered past traumatic experiences might find that horror movies trigger memories or emotions that are too distressing to confront.

Horror movies are designed to elicit powerful emotional responses, and some people simply prefer to avoid negative emotions, opting for more positive or light-hearted forms of entertainment. For others, a vivid imagination can amplify the fear experienced while watching horror movies, making the on-screen events feel all too real.

The enjoyment - or avoidance - of horror movies involves a complex interplay of human psychology. While many of us find thrills, catharsis, and a sense of control in the suspenseful and terrifying world of horror, others are better suited to forms of entertainment that align with their emotional sensitivities. Whatever our preference, there will be a Halloween-themed movie for you this October.

A MONSTROUS SERPENT

‘A thing most noysome and dreadfull’ stalked the Sussex countryside. Nine feet or more in length, snorting venomous poison, this long-necked scaley-monster’s pathway shadowed by a tell-tale of glutinous slime – ‘corrupt and offensive to the scent’. Some called it a serpent, some a dragon.

The Sussex story was first published in a pamphlet in 1614, a time wreathed in superstition: when map makers scattered their maps with fabulous beasts, when literature was full of explorations into unknown, mysterious places. From Essex in 1669 came news of ‘The Flying Serpent … so terrible … that no women, children … nor a great many men durst not go near’. Another winged serpent haunted the Cotswolds, hideous with ‘two faces and two heads’.

Our Sussex dragon-like serpent was the terror of St Leonard’s Forest, ‘a vast and unfrequented place … full of unwholesome shades, and over-growne hollowes’, an eerie place where the dreaded monster lurked, devouring ‘poore mens cattell’, attacking dogs and gobbling up the forest’s conies. Bodies of slain victims add a human touch to the pamphlet’s cover, a helpless couple ‘poyson’d and very much sweld’.

The pamphleteer explained these catastrophic troubles: the serpent’s horrific visitation a warning of ‘sinnes that live amongst us, which will … destroy us faster and farther than this Serpent both or can’. The fact that the locals couldn’t kill it, perhaps a sign of tumultuous troubles ahead: on the horizon, the king’s execution and a civil war to turn the world upside down. The monstrous serpent maybe an omen of times to come?

ROASTED CAULIFLOWER

WITH SPINACH, SAFFRON, PINE NUTS AND RAISINS

If you can’t think of anything to do with cauliflower other than steam it or make cauliflower cheese with it, try this tasty, delicious recipe, either as a side dish, or as the main supper event with crusty rolls or garlic bread.

Preparation time: 10 minutes. Cooking time: 20 minutes. Serves: 4

INGREDIENTS

1 medium cauliflower, cut into florets.

3 tbsp olive oil

1 large onion thinly sliced.

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp ground turmeric

METHOD

Pinch of saffron, infused in 150ml boiling water.

3 tbsp pine nuts, lightly toasted 75g raisins, soaked in warm water.

300g spinach leaves

1 tbsp butter (optional)

• Blanch the florets for 1 minute, then drain.

• How to blanch.

• Have ready a large bowl of ice-cold water, a slotted spoon, and a plate lined with a clean cloth or paper towel for draining.

• Bring a large pot of water to boil over high heat.

• Just before adding the vegetables, add a generous pinch of salt.

• Add the florets to the pot in small batches so that the water continues to boil. After about 1-2 minutes remove them from the boiling water with a slotted spoon and plunge them into the ice bath to stop the cooking process in a process called ‘shocking’.

• When the florets are completely cool, remove them from the ice bath and drain on the towellined plate.

• Heat the olive oil in a heavy saucepan then add the onion and a pinch of salt. Cook on a low heat until soft then add the ground spices and cook for another couple of minutes.

• Add the blanched cauliflower florets. Pour in the saffron water, add the pine nuts, drained raisins and spinach leaves. Cook until the leaves have wilted and cauliflower is soft, and you have a thin sauce. Season to taste and add the butter, if using.

SUPPORTING YOU TO LIVE WELL INDEPENDENTLY

It is a known fact that the UK population is ageing and in West Sussex, we have a higher percentage of older residents than the national average.

Most older people live in their own homes, rather than in specialist retirement housing or in care homes. However, as people age, they may find it useful to access information and advice that will help support them to live safely at home for longer.

The West Sussex Connect to Support website is for anyone in West Sussex who is looking for additional help or support to maintain their independence, manage day-to-day tasks, and improve their health and wellbeing.

You’ll find information and advice that can make all the difference, including:

• tips on looking after your physical and mental health;

• connecting with people in your local community;

• a comprehensive list of dementia support in West Sussex; and

• advice and support for family and friend carers. The website also has a money advice section which will be particularly useful in light of persistently high household costs. There are lists of organisations who offer reliable and confidential advice about managing your finances, and who can help you check whether there are any benefits or payments that you’re entitled to.

Of course, there may come a time when you or someone you care for is at the stage of needing more care and support. The Connect to Support website also has a care options section which explains the different alternatives including care at home, sheltered and retirement housing schemes, and extra-care housing. ELECTRIC BLANKET TESTING

GET YOUR ELECTRIC BLANKET TESTED FOR FREE THIS AUTUMN

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is running a series of free electric blanket testing sessions for residents next month. Faulty electric blankets are a common cause of fire in the home. Last year almost 40% of the blankets tested by the service were defective and posed a serious risk of starting a fire. Regular testing is recommended for blankets over two years old to ensure they are still safe to use. Blankets over ten years old should be replaced.

Residents can book an appointment to have their blanket tested at an upcoming session by calling 0345 872 9719. The sessions will take place between 9.30am and 4.30pm on the following dates:

• 3 October – The Studio, New Park Centre, Chichester PO19 7XY

• 4 October – Worthing Community Centre, 2 Romany Road, Durrington BN13 3FJ

• 5 October – Bognor Fire Station, West Meads Drive, Bognor PO21 5TB

• 10 October – Crawley Library, Southgate Avenue, Crawley RH10 6HG

• 11 October – Horsham Library, Lower Tanbridge Way, Horsham RH12 1PJ

• 12 October – Haywards Heath Fire Station, Mill Green Road, Haywards Heath RH16 1XQ

WSFRS’s Safe and Well Manager Samantha Barber said: “We know lots of people will be planning to use their electric blankets to keep warm this winter, particularly as the cost of living remains high.”

“Of the 106 blankets we tested last year, 42 were deemed unsafe to use as they failed to meet safety standards, which posed a great fire risk. Please book an appointment to meet our friendly team.”

FIVE FUN THINGS TO DO IN OCTOBER

Get lost! – There will almost certainly be a Maize Maze near where you live, often accompanied by other attractions such as pumpkin patches and hayrides. Go and get lost with family or friends for an hour, then hit the farm shop after to stock up on goodies.

Pick your own pumpkin – This is a fun activity (and cute photo op) for all the family. Head to your local pumpkin patch and choose your favourite. You might be able to carve or paint it on site too.

Take a guided ghost walk – There might be one in your town, or nearby. The guide dresses up and tells stories of hauntings and horror. Some are kid-friendly too.

Go leaf-collecting – Dress up warm and head out to the local woods. See how many different colours and types of leaves you can collect. Press them between sheets of blotting paper when you return home and use them to make pictures or decorate cards.

Read a creepy book – Cool autumn evenings are just right for curling up with a good book. Try Erin. E Adam’s Jackal, about a Black woman, Liz Rocher, returning to her predominantly white hometown in Pennsylvania to attend a wedding, and discovering a horrifying secret, that children have been vanishing in the nearby forest for years. All of them Black. All of them girls. Can Liz find the latest missing child before she’s consumed by the darkness?

FRY DAY EVERY DAY BY TOM HANCOCK

HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT AIR FRYER

Air fryers have become something of a kitchen staple recently. They are quick, easy, and economical to use, and provide the crispiness of fried food without the guilt. They work by circulating hot air around the food, producing a crispy layer similar to frying but with a fraction of the oil. If you’ve decided to join the air fryer revolution, here are essential features to consider:

Capacity – How big is your household? For singles or couples, a 2 to 3-litre unit might suffice. Families or those who entertain frequently might want to consider a larger model, 5, 7 or even 10 litres. There is an air fryer for almost every family.

Temperature Range - A broad temperature range provides versatility in cooking. The ability to hit temperatures between 80-200C should be a minimum requirement.

Controls – Digital touchscreens offer precision, and some advanced models feature preset options for specific foods like fries, chicken, or fish.

Ease of Cleaning – Non-stick, removable parts, particularly the cooking basket, make cleaning a breeze. Many models have dishwasher-safe components for added convenience.

Additional Features – Some air fryers come with added functionalities like rotisserie, dehydration, or the ability to bake and roast. While these can increase the price, they provide added versatility.

Safety – Look for air fryers with safety features like auto shut-off, cool-touch exteriors, and ‘overheat’ protection. Your perfect air fryer will align with your cooking needs, kitchen space, and budget. Do your research and then every day can be Fry-day!

Editor’s note: we have bought the Ninja Foodi Max Dual Zone 9.5L Air Fryer. I can cook fajitas and spicy potatoes in 20 mins and cooked breakfast for 14 in a similar time. It uses barely any energy and is really easy to use,

POWER OF ATTORNEY

Have you got one? If not, don’t wait until you need one!

A lot of my clients when I ask them if they have a Power of Attorney will reply by saying ‘no’, they don’t need one and that they are too young to think about putting such a document in place at the moment. I will then usually go on to politely explain that they’ve kind of missed the whole point of the document.

Age has nothing to do with whether you should protect yourself by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney. No matter how old you are, it is important to think about what you would want to happen should you become incapacitated (either temporarily or permanently) due to illness, accident or an impairment. Wouldn’t it be better if you decided (rather than the Court) who you would want to deal with your finances and/or business interests and who you would want to make health and welfare decision on your behalf if you are unable to express a view.

A Lasting Power of Attorney has to be given to a third party by you, rather than taken out by them for you.

If you have made a Will then that goes some way to getting your affairs in order and making things easier for your loved ones but the Executors appointed in your Will only have the power to deal with things when you have passed away. They don’t have any legal authority whilst you are still alive, but incapacitated. You need Attorneys under a Lasting Power of Attorney document to look after your needs in such circumstances.

Call the office for a no obligation appointment to find out more details. Don’t forget I can also help you with:

• Wills and Trusts

• Inheritance Tax

• Care Fees Planning

• General & Lasting Powers of Attorney

• Probate

• Administration of Estates

BACK TO SCHOOL BLUES

The morning I had been dreading for six weeks had arrived. 5 September 2023. With my eyes tightly shut I was hoping to time travel right through to Christmas. The problem. That’s impossible. So, what should I do? I decided to lie in my bed as still as a statue pretending to play dead! My mum came into my room, opened the curtains and called out my name a few times. She stopped calling (what a sneaky boy I am, I thought - maybe I can pull this off). Little did I know but as Mum walked towards me, she whipped off my covers (oh no) and decided to tickle my feet. Instantly I wobbled around like a bowl of jelly having a fit (why am I so ticklish?). I’d blown my cover. I was out of sneaky ideas. It was time to get ready for school. And quickly or I’d be late.

Reluctantly I walked towards my wardrobe groaning and got out my uniform. This is not what I had been used to since the summer term ended, I thought to myself; itchy clothes and waking up early. Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse, a button ripped off my shirt. Noooooo! I angrily pulled out another shirt, this time carefully doing my buttons up and put my tie on in the usual scruffy way.

I stumbled down the stairs to the kitchen to find watery porridge on the table. I gulped it down and having put a complaint in to the chef, went back upstairs to brush my teeth. The clock was ticking, the time was 7:55. I was going to be late. I rushed back down the stairs, opened the garage door and picked up my rucksack. I got my bike out dodging all the mess in the garage (which, by the way, my Dad had only tidied at the weekend) accidentally banging into shoes and all sorts. I managed to manoeuvre out of the garage and got on my bike. Something felt wrong, My tyre was flat. I had a puncture. NOOOOOO! Things had gone from bad to EVEN worse.

What could I do? If I walked I’d be late. It was a scorching hot morning so I couldn’t run. I’d have to get a lift. That was my last chance (my best bet) of not getting detention on the first morning back. By now my Mum had gone to work. My Dad was my last chance and he isn’t a fan of “early” mornings. However, he could see how desperate I was, and we ran into the car and sped off to Felpham Community College to start Year 8. Luckily, I made it to school right in the nick of time. What a chaotic morning, back to school blues at its worst!

FELPHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION AT PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS

The following may offer some assistance to members of the public to understand how a Council meeting works.

THE ROLE OF THE PARISH COUNCIL

Parish councils are a local authority that make all kinds of decisions on behalf of the people on issues that affect the local community, most commonly planning matters, crime prevention, managing open spaces and campaigning for and delivering better services and facilities.

A Parish Council is elected by the electorate of the area to serve as a body to decide upon and provide local facilities and fulfil requirements. Parish Councillors are unpaid volunteers who give their time and service freely to assist the local community.

Meetings of the Parish Council are not public meetings, but members of the public have a statutory right to attend meetings of the council as observers. As part of its community engagement, Felpham Parish Council sets out a time for public participation at an agreed time when members of the public are invited to speak.

ARE RESIDENTS ALLOWED TO SPEAK OR CONTRIBUTE?

The law does not allow members of the public to take part in the debates. However, Felpham Parish Council will allow members of the public the opportunity to speak for up 5 minutes, with a total allocated public participation time of 15 minutes, following a temporary adjournment at the beginning of the meeting. Public participation is an opportunity for members of the public to (a) make representations, (b) answer questions or (c) give evidence relating to the business on the agenda.

PROCEDURE FOR A MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC TO SPEAK OR RAISE ISSUES AT COUNCIL MEETINGS.

Please email any questions to the Clerk seven days prior to the meeting to allow councillors to make an informed response.

THE DEPENDENCE TRAP BY

ARE YOU STOPPING YOUR ADULT CHILD FROM GROWING UP?

Watching your child transition into adulthood can be both rewarding and challenging. One of the primary goals during this phase is to encourage independence. This requires a combination of guidance, support, and letting go.

Healthy boundaries are important, for both of you. They are a cornerstone of healthy relationships and personal growth. It’s natural to want to protect and guide your child, even though they are young adults, but clear boundaries are crucial to establishing a healthy parent-adult child dynamic.

Initiate conversations about expectations, responsibilities, and personal space. Encourage your adult child to express their thoughts and needs as well. This establishes mutual respect and lays the groundwork for understanding each other’s boundaries.

Respect their need for privacy and personal space. Avoid prying into their affairs or constantly checking in. This respect sends a signal that you trust them to handle their own lives.

With the current cost of living crisis, many of us are providing financial support to our adult children. It’s important to be clear about the terms and conditions of this support. Encourage them to take charge of their own finances, even if you’re helping out. This helps them understand the value of money management.

Experience is a valuable teacher so allow your adult child to make mistakes, within reason.

Allow them to take charge of their decisions, even if it means they might stumble. Whether it’s choosing a career or managing household chores, independence only grows when they realise the impact of their choices, and that mistakes are not setbacks, but opportunities for growth.

If your adult child faces failure, be there to offer emotional support and help them analyse what went wrong and how to improve the outcome next time.

Rather than swooping in to solve every problem, encourage your child to brainstorm solutions independently. This enhances their critical thinking skills and empowers them to feel they have the tools to overcome challenges.

Over parenting can inadvertently hinder your adult child’s progress towards independence. Practise active listening instead of imposing your views. Offer advice only when asked and respect their decisions even if they differ from your own perspective.

Encourage self-care because independence involves taking care of oneself physically, emotionally, and mentally. Encourage healthy habits and stress the importance of self-care routines.

Finally, acknowledge and celebrate their achievements, no matter how small. This reinforces their confidence and their ability to succeed on their own. Remember, your role as a parent is evolving during this phase, from a primary caregiver to a supportive mentor. By following these strategies, you will empower your adult child to embrace their journey towards independence.

HALLOWEEN MOVIE NIGHT BY LOUISE

FOR LOVERS OF THE CLASSICS

Halloween (1978) - An iconic film featuring Michael Myers as a killing machine and featuring a wonderful score by John Carpenter.

Rosemary’s Baby (1968) - Mia Farrow is chilling as the pregnant young Rosemary, who must face the truth about the secret origins of the mysterious child she’s carrying. It’s a true, slow-burn terror.

Psycho (1960) - From the string-filled score to the creepy twist at the end, everything about Hitchcock’s Psycho, from its string-filled score to its creepy twist ending is classic horror.

FOR HARDCORE TERROR-LOVERS

Hereditary (2018) - This one is a truly terrifying paranormal horror — starring Toni Collette as the secretive matriarch of the Graham family. This is one to watch if you don’t want to sleep for at least a week!

A Quiet Place (2018) - This is a post-apocalyptic thriller / horror which takes place in a world where even the slightest sound can spell your imminent death. It plays to every parent’s nightmare about how we can never really keep our children safe.

It (2017) - Stephen King’s Pennywise the Clown is one of the most sinister horror movie characters ever to grace the silver screen. Nuff said.

FOR FAMILY-FRIENDLY HALLOWEEN FUN

Beetlejuice (1988) - From the imagination of Tim Burton, Beetlejuice follows the story of a young couple who find themselves stuck haunting their home in the afterlife. It’s very funny!

The Addams Family (1991) - It’s a classic and an easy choice for a spooky — but not nightmareinducing — Halloween movie night.

ParaNorman (2012)- A misunderstood boy takes on ghosts, zombies, and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse.

Why Should I Get A Lasting Power of Attorney?

Our experienced team provide expert legal advice on a variety of legal services, including Wills and Estate Planning, Estate Administration and Lasting Power of Attorney. Getting a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a crucial legal document that allows you to appoint someone you trust to make important decisions on your behalf if you become unable to make those decisions yourself. Every day we make decisions about our lives. The ability to make these decisions is called mental capacity. People may not be able to make decisions some or all of the time, perhaps because they have had a sudden injury or a stroke. If you lose mental capacity without a Lasting Power of Attorney in place, your loved ones will need to apply through the court to become a ‘Deputy’ in order to sort out your finances or welfare, which is a long and expensive process.

Anyone over 18 can set it up – you don’t need to be unwell. It is important to set it up before you become unwell. You can only set up a Lasting Power of Attorney when you have mental capacity. Once you’ve lost mental capacity, it’s too late. The key is to act early but don’t think you suddenly give up control once you apply for a LPA. You can choose whether it can be used either before, or only when, you lose mental capacity. Here are some compelling reasons why you should consider getting an LPA:

1. Ensure Your Wishes Are Respected: An LPA ensures that your preferences and wishes are respected, even if you are no longer able to communicate or make decisions. This can include healthcare decisions, financial matters, and more.

2. Choose Your Decision-Maker: With an LPA, you have the ability to select someone you trust, such as a family member or close friend, to act as your attorney. This allows you to have control over who makes decisions for you.

3. Plan for the Unexpected: Life is unpredictable, and accidents, illnesses, or cognitive decline can happen at any age. Having an LPA in place ensures that someone you trust can step in to manage your affairs when needed.

4. Avoid Court Appointments: Without an LPA, if you become incapacitated and haven’t appointed someone to make decisions for you, the court may need to appoint a guardian or deputy. This process can be time-consuming, expensive, and

may result in someone being appointed who you wouldn’t have chosen yourself.

5. Maintain Financial Stability: An LPA for financial affairs allows your attorney to manage your finances, pay bills, and ensure your financial well-being is maintained, preventing financial hardships in case of incapacity.

6. Healthcare Decisions: An LPA for health and welfare enables your attorney to make decisions about your medical treatment and care, ensuring you receive the treatment you would want, even if you can’t express your wishes.

7. Reduce Family Conflict: By clearly specifying your preferences in an LPA, you can help prevent potential disputes among family members about your care or financial matters.

SPEEDY SPARKLE

CLEANING HACKS FOR WHEN TIME IS SHORT

We all know how wonderful our homes look and smell after a deep clean. But real life is crazy busy and sometimes we might let things slide for a week…or several (or is that just me? Tell me it’s not just me!) and suddenly we realise that friends or relatives are arriving imminently, and the house is not quite as sparkly as it might be.

• Don’t panic if your house looks like the aftermath of a natural disaster, it’s actually not that difficult to fake a clean-ish house with only 30-60 minutes to spare. It’s mainly about perception. Concentrate on where the visitors will be rather than the whole house.

• Clutter isn’t exactly unclean, but it can make your space look uncared for. Hot spots are the porch and hallways, the living room, and the kitchen. Mentally divide clutter into five categories: rubbish, laundry, dirty dishes, items which have a designated home and items which don’t have a designated home. Whip round the three hotspots with a bin bag. Throw obvious rubbish straight into it then take it to the bin. Then whizz round again collecting all dirty cups and plates, take them to the kitchen and deposit them in the sink. Do the same for dirty laundry, depositing it all in the laundry bin. Do a final sweep for items with and without homes. Return all the ‘homed’ items to their designated places and dump the rest in the tub to be dealt with later. Put somewhere your guests won’t be (even if that’s in the boot of your car!)

• Return to the kitchen, wash the dishes, and put them away. Clear kitchen surfaces give the impression of a house under control, so put as much as you can into cupboards, then wipe the counters.

• Empty the kitchen bin and open the windows to air the space.

• Your home should be looking better already.

• If the visitors are arriving in the daytime, open the curtains and blinds to let light flood in; well-lit spaces are perceived as cleaner than those that are dimly lit. Cast an eye around for obvious dust (the TV can collect a surprising amount, ditto for coffee tables and mirrors!) If the visitors are arriving after dusk, ambient lighting is your friend. Cosy lamplight can hide a multitude of dusty sins.

• Plump up cushions and put out fresh towels in any bathroom your guests might use (flush the loo too, especially if you have teens who routinely forget…just me again?)

• Finally spritz a little scent around. Anything citrussy brightens the space because we are conditioned to think that ‘lemon smells clean’.

• Add a plant or flowers. If you have time, grab a bunch of flowers. It doesn’t have to be big or showy. Even a few sprigs of greenery in a vase will make it look as though you have your act together.

Then open the wine, order a takeaway, and enjoy spending time with your guests.

COLOUR WHEELS AND COLOUR THEORY

As an Art teacher I often get told by students that they have lots of different types of art equipment they just don’t use. When I ask why, they say they bought them after watching someone else use them, but they just don’t seem to work the same for them.

This always makes me smile. I remind students that they need to practise with a new medium, get an idea for how it works and what it’s best suited for. So here is my advice to you; get out that set of paints that have been sitting in the cupboard or that box of oil pastels that you just don’t know how to use and make a colour wheel.

Colour wheels are a great way to try new mediums. It’s a temptation to open a packet of new art materials and want to create a ‘great’ piece of art, even a masterpiece! But first you need to get used to the feel of the medium; what surface it works best on, how much water is needed, how much pressure is required to make a mark and so much more. Working on a simple colour wheel, testing your colours and getting a feel for the medium is a good way to get familiar with your new art supplies.

You can draw out a traditional colour wheel or create a more informal wheel/line sampler. I have two versions you can download free from my website. (https://www.artwithtricia.com/digital-downloads)

First try the primary colours; red, yellow and blue. Next try using those colours to make secondary colours; green, orange and purple. Remember if you are using paint, just mix them together on a clean palette, but if you are using coloured pencils or even oil pastels you will need to layer colours on top of each other to create a mix, and then the mixed colour may change depending on which colour you laid down first. You can then try mixing these six colours (primary and secondary) together to create your tertiary colours. These will eventually mix to create greys and browns and then you can compare all your own secondary and tertiary mixes with any supplied by the manufacturer.

It’s always useful to keep these references for the future to help you choose the right colour and understand the manufacturer’s colour names. Adding white will create a tint, changing a red to a pink. If you are using watercolours remember you will need to add more water, rather than white, to create tints. Adding black (be very sparing with your addition) will create a shade, changing yellow sometimes to a brown or a green!

Here are some ideas for colour combinations:

• Complementary colours at opposites on the colour wheel, so yellow and blue make each other ‘pop’.

• Adjacent/Analogous colours work well together as they are harmonious and made from similar colour mixes. Try blues and purples or yellows and greens.

• Monochrome colours are the same colour, just lighter (tints) and darker (shade) versions, sometimes referred to as tones.

• Try limiting your palette by choosing some adjacent colours and a complementary. This is known as a split complementary, try yellow and green opposite a burgundy red.

If you are interested in learning more about colour mixing or creating a colour wheel visit my free resources on my website or join one of my courses in Chichester, Felpham or online. www.artwithtricia.com or www.triciajohnson.uk. I look forward to hearing from you.

A GOOD READ

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

Terry Pratchett’s “Good Omens,” a collaborative masterpiece co-written with Neil Gaiman, is an imaginative tour de force that seamlessly melds humour, fantasy, and social commentary. Published in 1990, the novel has become a timeless cult classic that continues to captivate readers with its wit and irreverence. The original book was adapted into a successful TV series, but the original book is definitely worth seeking out.

The story revolves around an angel, Aziraphale, and a demon, Crowley, who have grown accustomed to life on Earth and have developed a certain fondness for humanity. When the apocalypse looms, they join forces to prevent the end of the world, inadvertently misplacing the Antichrist in the process. What ensues is a delightful romp through absurd situations, satirical jabs at religious norms, and a heartwarming exploration of friendship.

Pratchett and Gaiman’s unique writing styles blend seamlessly. Pratchett’s penchant for witty wordplay and Gaiman’s darkly enchanting storytelling combine to produce a tale that’s as intellectually stimulating as it is entertaining. The duo weaves together multiple storylines, including the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, a quirky witch named Anathema Device, and a bumbling witch-hunter, creating an intricate tapestry of characters and events.

At its core, “Good Omens” is a celebration of the human experience. It nudges readers to question the conventions they take for granted while delivering laugh-out-loud moments that provide muchneeded levity. It’s no wonder that this book has become a cherished favourite among readers.

The School for Good and Evil (Book 1) by Soman Chainani

Continuing the theme of ‘good and evil’ this month, the first book in Chainani’s series provides fresh take on fairy tales. Set in the mystical realm of Gavaldon, the story upends conventional notions of good and evil, sending readers on a journey of friendship, self-discovery, and moral complexity.

Sophie and Agatha are best friends, who are unexpectedly whisked away to the School for Good and Evil, an institution that trains children to become either heroes or villains in classic fairy tales. However, when their destinies seem to be swapped – Sophie, who embodies all things charming, is placed in the School for Evil, while Agatha, with her gloomy demeanour, is sent to the School for Good – the story takes a riveting turn. Chainani skilfully deconstructs stereotypes and delves into the depths of character motivations, making the reader question the nature of goodness and wickedness.

Chainani nicely balances whimsy with darkness in the exploration of friendship which is central to the novel. Sophie and Agatha navigate challenges that strain their bond, and face dilemmas that force them to confront their true selves.

The accessible, engaging prose makes the book suitable for a wide range of readers. The story invites readers to question the shades of grey between good and evil, and to embrace the power of friendship and self-acceptance. Young readers will almost certainly go searching for the sequels.

We are Arun A Cappella, a passionate group of women united by our love for music. Some of us are seasoned musicians with a lifelong dedication to music, while others are newcomers to the world of singing. Our repertoire is a vibrant mix of songs that spans various genres, from contemporary hits featured in “The Greatest Showman” and “Pitch Perfect” to timeless classics like “You Make Me Feel So Young.” What makes our group unique is our commitment to singing in four-part harmony, a rewarding challenge for both hobbyists and aspiring professionals alike. Our ultimate aspiration is to shine at next year’s Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers Convention, and we’re channelling the spirit of “Pitch Perfect” to make that dream a reality!

HEARING AIDS TO PREVENT DEMENTIA

As more of us live longer there has been greater research on what helps us feel better and stay independent. We all know that eating healthily and exercising help keep our hearts healthy, and more of us are becoming aware that ‘What’s good for your heart is good for your brain’.

In fact one outcome of current generations having better heart health than previous generations is that a smaller proportion of people are developing dementia. Surprisingly, this trend has also been helped by the 1944 Education Act, which raised the school leaving age to 15 and helped more children attend secondary school. As more of us stayed longer in school we increased our brain’s ability to withstand decline as we aged.

Exercising our minds benefits our brains in the same way that physical exercise benefits our bodies. But there is an even bigger factor that can help protect our brains as we age.

Getting a hearing test and wearing hearing aids if you need them is the single biggest thing you can do to reduce your risk of dementia.

Fortunately its easy to test your hearing. The RNID have a free hearing online hearing check with results in 3 minutes. All you need is a laptop, tablet or phone and a quiet spot to sit.

Go to rnid.org.uk/SussexHearingCheck and the RNID’s website will do the rest. If you can’t go online, you can get your hearing tested in on the NHS through your GP or in Specsavers and some Boots stores.

A FRIENDSHIP SEALED

My partner (Sandra) and I moved to Felpham only six months ago and we love walks along the sea front with our dog Reggie. Often, I am working (from home) when the morning walk takes place and Sandra has reported spotting a seal on a few occasions upon her return. This Wednesday she called me to say there was one quite close in near our closest slipway. So, I grabbed my camera (Canon EOS 7D Mark II) which I still had a 180mm fixed close-up lens on - so possibly not the best lens for the job) and shot down to the prom as quickly as I could.

Just as I got to the spot I saw Pam (a local resident) entering the water. I took about 50 shots in all … mostly just the seal. Eventually the two were swimming close enough together to get a few shots with the pair of them in the same frame and here they are! Pam later described how the seal was nudging up against her leg under the water and her sheer joy in having encountered the amazing marine mammal.

Pam said: “To have the incredible experience of a seal playing with you close by, is hard to express. Being alone in the sea with this beautiful, large wild creature was an experience I will never forget. We swam parallel for a while only a couple of metres apart.

“The seal would then dive down into the sea and wondering where it was, I would suddenly feel it brush gently by my legs! To begin with I squealed but after five or six times, I realised this big gentle giant was playing with me. Just incredible, awesome.

“After 30 minutes of playing together, I got out of the sea and reluctantly walked up the beach. My neighbour said the seal watched me go, then dived down and didn’t come up again. I wonder who he was! “My sincere thanks to Ged who took this beautiful photo of us. A memory of this incredible experience.” Editor: What a lovely story!

BOYS-ONLY SINGING GROUP STARTS IN BOGNOR REGIS

It has long been recognised that there is a lack of men and boys participating in the performing arts. Encouraging men to join singing and performing groups is more difficult, if they have had no experience in singing and performing as a child.

The problem starts with boys being generally reluctant to sing and perform in the same group as girls. This leads to an imbalance in mixed children’s choirs which filters through to mixed adult choirs.Boys seem to be more willing to sing in a group, if it is with other boys.

To encourage boys to try singing as a group, a boys-only singing group for boys aged 8 to 11 years old started in September at The Bognor Regis Youth and Community Centre in Westloats Lane. The sessions are held from 4pm to 5pm every Tuesday.

So that the sessions are available to all boys, there will be no charge for attending and the songs will be from a mixture of musical styles. The sessions will be run by Louise, and each boy must be accompanied by an adult during the sessions.

A TREAT, NOT JUST FOR BEATLES FANS!

The All Things Must Pass Orchestra, a mighty 10-piece band dedicated to the music of George Harrison, has been performing successfully since 2014 and on Saturday 18 November 2023 they will be performing their programme at Felpham Village Hall.

Each year, as part of their annual tour, the band performs at the Kenton Theatre in Henley-on-Thames, from where Friar Park, George Harrison’s estate, is only a short walk away. And just down the road, in a small village called Stoke Row, there is a pub and music venue called The Crooked Billet, where George used to dine frequently with his family.

The pub’s landlord, who knew about the All Things Must Pass Orchestra’s concerts in Henley, got in touch with bandleader, Alex Eberhard, to ask if he could perform a solo concert of George Harrison’s music at his venue. Alex offered to do the show as a duo, together with his friend and colleague Bernd Rest on guitar. A date was arranged for May 2020, but then Covid threw a spanner in the works. After a few attempts to reschedule, the concert was set to take place in May 2021, in a huge marquee that made social distancing possible.

A few weeks before the shows (because of great demand for tickets the duo were booked to play two consecutive nights) the landlord dropped another email, informing Alex and Bernd that George’s son, Dhani Harrison, had booked a table for the second evening.

The big day arrived and Dhani was indeed in the audience. During most of the concert he listened intently with his eyes closed, and for the last couple of songs he got up and danced in the aisles with his partner. After the show, the landlord came backstage with Dhani and introduced him to Alex and Bernd.

Dhani was full of praise for the duo’s musicianship and thanked Alex for paying his dad so much respect. To get Dhani Harrison’s approval was an incredible boost for the two musicians and showed that all their hard work and dedication had paid off, and that it is indeed possible to present George Harrison’s incredible music as a duo, stripped back to two guitars and two vocals.

Book early to avoid disappointment! Tickets are available from allthingsmustpass.com

OCTOBER HOROSCOPES

We will have two eclipses this October. The first on 14th October will be Solar, effecting our selfexpression and the second, on 28th with be Lunar, effecting our feelings. What does this mean for you? In astrology each eclipse marks a punctuation point in our lives, a moment to stop, reflect and regroup. To find out how each of these eclipses can best be handled by you, read on.

ARIES

By mid-month you will be oozing charm and can bowl people over with your fair and just attitude. Choose the 28th to review and release your own stuck emotions.

TAURUS

Though you could feel quite private and insular the early part of October, on the lunar eclipse 28th you will come out of hiding, ready to emotionally connect.

GEMINI

Your whole approach to creativity is under the spotlight. You’ll learn that less is more, so better to just stop trying and instead just follow your amazing intuition.

CANCER

This solar eclipse mid-month stops you in your tracks to re-evaluate how you express yourself around home and family. Time to come out of your shell.

LEO

Sometimes you can just be a little ‘over the top’ and flamboyant, but this October you can press the emotional reset button regarding extended family.

VIRGO

You can let go of the guilt and perfection that often drives you, instead allowing yourself some peace. Embrace the phrase “my best is good enough”.

LIBRA

What a lovely month for you to meditate, especially with music. If you have abandoned your instrument, now is the time to take it up again and play.

SCORPIO

This whole month will be about romance and partnership. The solar eclipse boosts intimacy and the lunar eclipse magnifies your love of sharing.

SAGITTARIUS

Family matters will lighten and brighten, so this would be a great month for you to put together a well-overdue family gathering or reunion.

CAPRICORN

The solar eclipse could make you review your whole approach to business and family duty, and how you can carve out more time for the children.

AQUARIUS

Sudden business opportunities may appear from overseas sources. When not travelling, curl up with a good book about ancient cultures’ beliefs.

PISCES

This month’s eclipses make you curious to dig out hidden documents or secrets. Your conversations will be deep, intense and thought-provoking.

You are invited to our wonderfully relaxing, soothing and healing GUIDED MEDITATION, SOUND BATH

the last Thursday of every month, Jubilee Hall, Middleton-on-Sea AUTUMN DATES - 26 October and 30 November

Arun Neighbourhood Policing Team

You can contact your local team in the following ways:

• Call us: on 101 to report a crime or 999 if it’s an emergency

• Email us: arun@sussex.pnn.police.uk

As we approach the time of year when the evenings are getting darker, it is an excellent time to review your home security. Most burglars are opportunists and will always look for a soft target – a premises that appears unoccupied or one which is easy for them to break into or already insecure. Before going out or going away, we recommend you do the following:

• Close and lock all doors and windows even if you will only be gone for a short amount of time.

• During the hours of darkness, shut the curtains and leave a light on – this can be a significant deterrent as burglars like to ‘work’ unseen and will tend to avoid a home that looks occupied.

• If you are out for long periods of time then consider the use of a timer switch to trigger one or more lights or a radio in the house which again will give the impression that someone is at home.

• If you have an alarm, ensure it is set.

• Keep valuables out of sight.

• Ensure all side gates, sheds and garages are kept locked.

• Don’t leave car documents or ID on view.

• Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps.

• Consider installing a video doorbell. This can act as a deterrent, keeping your property safe as well as helping to solve crimes.

If you spot something suspicious, please let us know at the time by calling 999. It could be nothing, but it might be something and this could help keep you, your neighbours and their property safe. We are committed to catching criminals and making your neighbourhood a safer place to live. The information we receive from you and your neighbours plays a huge part in enabling us to do that. If you see anything suspicious, call us straight away on 999.
