Exciting Event Highlights

brooklyn book bodega

13

The Brooklyn Book Bodega is an organization whose mission is to give hundreds of books, homes. Studies have shown that having at least a hundred books in a home can improve the quality of life for young kids and teens, whether they read these books or not. Just being surrounded by books of factual information or even fairy-tale stories can boost the well-being of children. By taking in book donations from the community, volunteers like us can stamp the books with, “This belongs to _____” to help personalize these books for the kids who will be receiving them. We organize the books before packing them to send out to other families of our community who may not have the same access to books as we do. This was a great event, especially because I have always loved reading. From graphic novels, fantasies, and mysteries, books allowed me to escape my world and learn about new and possibly more exciting worlds. Being able to donate my own books, help with this cause, and know that these books were going to give other children that same sense of freedom that I found in my books, motivated me. -Isabella He

mclaughlin park cleanup

15

16

On August 18th I attended a Park Cleanup at McLaughlin Park with fellow key clubbers from Brooklyn Technical High School. This event was part of our club’s single service project for the year climate change. During the event we helped to weed, dig, and plant new vegetation in the park! I’m definitely not a very experienced gardener but it was enjoyable to work with other members as we cleaned out the old overgrown shrubs to make room for the new plants. This was one of the first in-person events that I’ve gotten to attend this service year and overall it was a really fun experience because not only did I get to help out my community but I was able to meet other key club members! Our Single Service Director, Nina, did an amazing job organizing this park clean up and I’m very happy that I was able to participate in the event! -Frankie Negri

I really felt that this event helped me grow familiar once more to interacting with a large group of people, something I was worrying about as the start of school was drawing nearer. As the first event my co-head Alexandra and I planned, I think it went smoothly and without much fault, which is a relief. I’m very thankful to her for making this happen and also to all the execs from the different key clubs that attended for their friendliness and contribution. Also as my first in person event, it was so laid back and felt more like just a gathering. It was so fun going from group to group of strangers and introducing ourselves, giving out supplies, and thanking them for coming. We had attracted a bigger

21

group than I had expected which was overwhelming at first but our fundraising achievement paid off. The most difficult part of the whole affair was probably the heat. I’m pretty sure everyone would’ve felt close to fainting if no one was having fun on top of the extreme environment, but that wasn’t the case. I personally didn’t paint a tote bag but some of the kids were really talented and others… Overall I think this was a great experience that was my privilege to have so early on in high school. I hope everyone looks forward to our next interclub event (it’s already in the making) as they will only get better from here on end. -Yoobin Oh

During this event, our BTHS key club collaborated with Goldstein & Francis Lewis to paint tote bags to fundraise money. We sat on sheets on the battery park grass and were given plastic plates, paint, cups of water and a tote bag as a blank canvas to paint on. This was my first time going to an in person key club event in over a year, the last time having been before schools closed due to covid (early 2020). I was kind of worried that I wouldn't see anyone I knew at the event or that there would be no other seniors and that I wouldn't have anyone to speak to, but I put the sheet to sit on nearby a couple girls and I was glad to be in their company. One of them asked me my name and I asked theirs back and we introduced ourselves to each other. I was really glad that I had those 2 girls to talk to because to sit at the park in silence while everyone else was talking to

During the event, I felt very relaxed and calm. I liked the chill atmosphere of the event and how people were speaking to each other while painting but there were moments of silence as well (which I don't think is a bad thing). It felt nice to be able to paint while sitting on the park grass and talking to those sitting nearby me. I think this event has affected me in a very positive way because I met new people and the event exceeded my expectations in that I didn't expect to meet those 2 girls let alone talk so much with them and hang out with them. I also liked the tote bags themselves, I think the idea for this fundraiser was really wholesome. Now I have a tote bag to use, in fact recently I used it to carry my stuff inside to go to my local library. I really enjoyed this event and this was a great day for me. -Kelly Chen

chinatown beautification day

27

28

On September 18th, Chinatown Youth Initiatives hosted Chinatown Beautification Day. High schoolers from across the city gathered in Columbus park for a jam packed day of learning about and contributing to Chinatown. We heard a panel of two amazing Asian American activists, participated in a carton workshop, ate an amazing free lunch, cleaned up the park and surrounding blocks, and did a raffle for gift cards and stuffed animals. Chinatown Youth Initiatives is a non-profit dedicated to empowering NYC youth with the knowledge and skills to address the needs of Chinatown, Asian Americans, and other underrepresented communities.

This event has been happening annually for years and every year it is fabulous! Last year, I participated virtually but it was amazing to see all the volunteering enthusiasm in person. Thank you to all the Key Clubbers who came, I had so much fun meeting all of you. I’m really excited for the next Chinatown Beautification Day in 2022! -Siri Waxenberg

Last year, I participated virtually but it was amazing to see all the volunteering enthusiasm in person.

On September 18, Key club volunteers volunteered with non-profit Chinatown Youth Initiatives to empower NYC youth. Key clubbers volunteered in a youth-led effort to clean Chinatown and support our communities. As a part of Chinatown Youth Initiatives’ Nineteenth Annual Chinatown Beautification Day, we discussed courses of action in the breaking down of Asian and other minority communities’ stereotypes and the coming together in order to uplift these underrepresented groups. We cleaned up Columbus Park in Chinatown, Manhattan, establishing the importance of youth activism in our communities. For 8 hours, from 11 AM to 7 PM, volunteers addressed paths to uplifting our friends, families, and neighbors, communicated and connected with others striving for the same goal, and took action in beautifying a beautiful neighborhood. Last but not least, everyone who took part in this event earned a limited edition CBD 2021 souvenir and earned raffle tickets to participate in the raffle for winnings of stuffed animals, bubble tea gift cards, and more! -Isabella He

#wearitpink for breast cancer awareness

31

32

October was Breast Cancer Awareness month and to honor those who have been impacted by breast cancer, we hosted many events to support and raise awareness for this cause. For instance, we selected Susan G. Komen for this month’s Charity Miles charity and had members participate in the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer”, however, #WEARITPINK has undoubtedly been my favorite event this month.

I also found it so heartwarming to see how eager our members and school staff were working together to strive for a more educated and understanding community. This event has helped me further realize the importance of having an active community where we all contribute to combating important issues. I would love to do events similar to this in the future and I am really looking forward to this upcoming service year! -Susan Wang

I had so much fun helping hand out I also found it so pink ribbons and coordinating pink heartwarming to see how outfits with fellow Key Club members! I loved how this event was eager our members and school staff were working together to so universal and that anyone could dress up in pink clothes to advocate strive for a more educated and for Breast Cancer Awareness. understanding community.
