CATS is one of those musicals that many theatergoers have either seen or heard about, yet often they walk away remembering only the spectacular dancing. Believe me, I had a similar reaction when I first saw the original Broadway show. I was captivated by Gillian Lynne’s choreography and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music. However, CATS is about much more than dance; it’s about forgiveness, compassion, resilience, and acceptance—lessons that are critically important today. It’s also about learning from our youth, who often think more simply and let go of grudges and hate.
Flash forward to when I was cast as Bombalurina by Director Jacob Brent (the original Mr. Mistoffelees) and performed alongside the original Old Deuteronomy, Ken Page. These two incredible artists would gather our cast for British-style tea time every day at 4:00 PM and share the backstory of all the cats and their relationships within the tribe. Through these stories, I learned what I wanted to pass on to our YAP cast, helping them create the rich, interconnected world you will see on stage.
For those who feel there is no plot, the show is divided into sections, as detailed in the song section of the program. This can help guide you through the story. The show’s origin is quite unique—it began in a small dressing room during technical rehearsals for Evita. Andrew Lloyd Webber, frustrated by constant interruptions, retreated to a dressing room with a piano and his favorite childhood book, T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. There, he began composing melodies. Years later, he partnered with Trevor Nunn, who excelled at solving theatrical problems. They had great lyrics and melodies but struggled to tie them into a cohesive musical. This changed when Valerie Eliot found a crumpled sheet of paper on T.S. Eliot’s desk—a poem titled “Grizabella: The Glamour Cat.” This poem became the through line for the musical, which won seven Tony Awards in 1982, including Best Book, Best Score, and Best Musical.
In our production, you will see how hard this young group of actors from over ten local high schools have worked to bring this musical to life. In just three weeks, they learned an immense amount of choreography inspired by Gillian’s original work, honoring her with certain motifs. They tackled difficult time signatures, vocal harmonies, and combined them with deep storytelling, all set to music and dance. You will meet the cats, follow their leader through the Jellicle Ball, and witness Grizabella’s journey in three parts: her rise and fall from fame, her return and plea for forgiveness, and her hope to be chosen to move on to a new Jellicle life.
Working with this production team and these young artists has been exciting, thrilling, and rewarding due to their enthusiasm, talent, and drive. They put pure joy into 80 hours of rehearsal. Free your mind and allow T.S. Eliot’s cats to entertain you. Cats has always been unique, and that is what makes it special.
Maybe it will remind you of the power of community or the importance of maintaining a sense of humor in times of sorrow. Maybe it will inspire you to accept one another despite our differences. Perhaps it will teach you about the power of love, forgiveness, unity, pride, regret, or second chances. No matter what, I thank you for attending live theater, supporting educational programming, and celebrating these brilliant young performers. Enjoy the show.

As part of the move to Carmel he was a key member of the design and construction team for the Tarkington, Studio Theater and the support space – acting as the owner representative in all key decisions. Michael has directed more than 35 productions at Civic since 2000, including WAIT UNTIL DARK, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT (eight productions) RENT (Concert), THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, HAIRSPRAY, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, ELF THE MUSICAL and THE COLOR PURPLE. He has designed sound, lights, or scenery for most theatres in Indianapolis and has received awards for his sound designs from The Indianapolis Star and the League of Indianapolis Theatres. Michael has occasionally been seen on stage in such roles as Larry in COMPANY, Arthur in LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! and Czolgosz in ASSASSINS, all at the Phoenix Theatre, Zach in A CHORUS LINE at Civic and in 2015 returned to the stage after 17 years in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR as Caiaphas. Michael was born and raised in the Indianapolis area. He attended Avon High School, IUPUI and Ball State University. He lives in a 130 year old house in downtown Indianapolis with his lovely wife of 29 years, actress Marni Lemons – a third generation Civic performer.
ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (COMPOSER)
Andrew Lloyd Webber has composed the scores of some of the world’s most famous musicals. From Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1969) to Cinderella (2021), his work has been consistently seen on world stages. Before the COVID pandemic hit, Lloyd Webber had shows continually running in the West End for 48 years and on Broadway for 41. When Sunset Boulevard joined School Of Rock, CATS and The Phantom Of the Opera, he equalled Rodgers & Hammerstein’s record of four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. He is one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards.
Lloyd Webber owns seven London theatres, including the iconic London Palladium and Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Over the past three years the latter has been completely restored and renovated at a cost of over £60 million. It is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by a private theatre owner in recent times. His mantra that every penny of profit made from his theatres is ploughed back into the buildings has meant that considerable work has been undertaken across his theatre portfolio during the pandemic, including the complete remodelling and reseating of the Gillian Lynne.
Lloyd Webber is passionate about the importance of musical education and diversity in the arts. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 30 performing arts scholarships every year for talented students with financial need and supports a range of projects such as the Music In Secondary School Trust and commissioning research into diversity in theatre.
Andrew Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary life peer in 1997. To mark his 70th birthday, his bestselling autobiography Unmasked was published by Harper Collins in March 2018.

Peggy Cranfill was Civic’s Director of Education from 1997-2002 and taught in our classrooms for over a decade beyond that. Her devotion to arts education was contagious and unflappable. We dedicate Jr. Civic’s collection of children’s literature and classroom materials in loving memory of her and to the students who brought her so much joy. We thank the donors to the Peggy Cranfill Memorial Library Fund for their gracious support. If you would like to contribute to the Library Fund, please contact kate@civictheatre.org.
