Who is Kayla Davion?

The Ball State alumna will address the graduating class of 2025 at the university’s Spring Commencement ceremony.

Kayla Davion, a 2017 Ball State University graduate, will be the class of 2025’s commencement speaker at the Spring Commencement ceremony May 3.

Davion is best known for her Broadway performances in the Tony-nominated “Waitress” and portraying Tina Turner in “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical,” according to an April 10 press release from the university. The release also stated she is the first Ball State student to book a Broadway show.

In high school, Davion said she had experience with singing but little with theater. After receiving a Ball State pamphlet her senior year of high school, she knew it was the school for her.

“[The] pamphlet came in the mail, and my gut told me I needed to be there. It actually ended up being the only school I auditioned for. When my mom and dad drove me to the audition on campus, I was blown away by the feeling of home I felt being there,” Davion said via email.

Ball State President Geoffrey Mearns was happy to invite Davion to be the commencement speaker for the 2025 Spring Commencement ceremony, expressing she sets a great example for the students and has worked very hard to be where she is now.

“Kayla personifies the enduring values of our university. Since the day she left our campus, she has made her mark in the world of theater. She is an excellent role model for our students because she combines her talent, integrity and hard work to be successful,” Mearns said in an April 10 press release.

Davion said the university’s theater department prepared her for both on-stage work and work outside of performing arts.

She said one of the most helpful lessons she was taught while attending the university was how to be comfortable with her natural speaking voice. She added that she learned

how to dance, audition, and sing all with the proper stamina and help of the department.

Davion said Ball State’s theater department also helped her learn many things about herself and her surroundings by allowing her to develop a better understanding of how people learn and connect with one another.

“Art imitates life. What we do as actors is portray different versions of people you see everyday. We show the flaws and the humanity in people.”
- KAYLA DAVION, Broadway actress and Ball State University 2017 graduate

“[The theater department] showed me how to find all of the beauty in my art through my own eyes. Art imitates life. What we do as actors is portray different versions of people you see everyday. We show the flaws and the humanity in people,” Davion said.

Before graduating from college, Davion said one of her main goals was to make it to Broadway, and in 2016, just before she graduated university, she was able to make that dream a reality following an offer to be cast in the Tony-nominated original Broadway production “Waitress” as an understudy.

From there, she continued to accomplish that same goal and was involved in several other Broadway shows, such as “King Kong” and “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.”

However, Davion said Ball State’s theater program is not the only thing that helped her hone her performance craft.

During the summers between the university semesters, she worked at Kings Island in Ohio as a performer, where she learned about contracts, higher paying jobs and sustaining passion when feeling burnt out.

Since earning her degree, Davion has stayed involved with the university as an alumna by founding an alumni ambassador program to promote the school’s theater and dance programs, as well as returning to the university to both perform and teach.

“Ball State continued to be the driving encouragement to my dreams. The faculty pushed me to pursue my own greatness, and they challenged me to see the fullness in myself; that is something I will always be grateful for. It was never a no to something I wanted to accomplish. It was a ‘Let’s make a plan and give it all we got’ mentality. I want to continue to do that for someone else,” Davion said.

With regard to being the university’s 2025 Spring Commencement speaker, Davion said she is excited to encourage the graduating students as someone who graduated less than a decade ago.

With less than three weeks until the class of 2025 graduates, her advice to not only those students but to anyone pursuing higher education is to “be kind, know your ‘why,’ do the work and know that if your intention is pure, you will never be led astray.”

“[Work] is through action, not just talk. You can only say so much. Sometimes your actions have to speak for you, and when people can trust that you put action behind your words, you will unlock so many more doors than you could ever imagine,” Davion said.

The Honors House undergoes construction for a new addition to the building April 19 at Ball State University. ANDREW BERGER, DN

‘It’s about connections’

Students can expect to see changes to the Edmund F. and Virginia B. Ball Honors House by fall of 2025.

Renovations to the Edmund F. and Virginia B. Ball Honors House will be done by fall of 2025. An addition of a new wing will allow for more classrooms and offices for the students and faculty to utilize in the space.

James Buss, dean of the Honors College, said one of the changes students can expect is new study spaces that can be used at any time.

Built in 1979, Ball State’s Honors College is the oldest one in Indiana, according to Ball State Magazine. The discussion regarding renovations initially began in 2008 and started with renovations turning the old garage into a classroom. Conversations about further expansions then reignited in 2016, but the college received a donation to start the renovations only recently in spring of 2023.

Some of the benefits that come with the new structure include having a bigger space to help foster community amongst the students and faculty.

“It’s been really difficult to bring [the honors] community together because we don’t have enough space here for everyone to gather,” Buss said.

Furthermore, this expansion serves as a tangible representation of the important role the Honors College plays in the spirit of Ball State University.”

Academically, Buss said the new addition will bring the honors students back together so they aren’t spread across multiple buildings on campus, and he heard “through the grapevine”

that everyone is “looking forward to being under the same roof.”

Beyond the campus community, Buss believes the new renovations will also be important to maintain good relationships with alumni through the university’s various alumni programs, including Cardinal Classics Book Club.

“It’s not about donors and money. It’s about those connections,” Buss said

While in the process of constructing the new wing, he said the honors faculty meets with the construction crew every other week to discuss progress and an opening date for the new wing. Their goal is to have classes and faculty back in the wing by August.

Buss acknowledged that the yard and exterior work may not be done by that time but hoped to have some type of “major event” in September or October to signify the opening of the new facility with the donors in attendance.

Some of the new landscaping expected includes a labyrinth patio, gardens and multiple sidewalks leading to the backyard.

“That will open the Honors House and the property around it to make it feel more connected … Not just for honors students but students and faculty around campus,” Buss said.

The honors college population has grown consistently since 2014. At the time, Buss said there were 1,000 students in the college, and now, he expects a range of anywhere between 1,500-1,600 students in the incoming class of freshmen.

Buss also said by fall of 2026, the honors curriculum will be changing in an effort to make it more accessible to other majors and help all Ball State students further their academic career. The Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships, which helps all university students apply for scholarships, will also be included in the new wing.

During the remodeling, Honors College faculty wanted to keep the house’s originality. To achieve this, they are keeping the same architectural patterns.

“We tried not to destroy all the landscape and history,” Buss said.

According to the Ball State Honors College website, “Expanding the Edmund F. and Virginia B. Ball home will allow these offices to develop new activities and events as well as enhance existing connections with the university and community.”

Frank Diaz Morales, an Honors College peer mentor for the first-year mentor program, voiced his excitement for the new changes and the benefits they will have on students.

“The expansion of the Honors House is going to allow so many new opportunities within our programs that will enhance our immersive learning and experience,” he said, explaining that the house hosts many events and upholds traditions.

Morales believes the changes are “very much needed” for the Honors House and echoed Buss’ sentiments about rising student enrollment.

“Furthermore, this expansion serves as a tangible representation of the important role the Honors College plays in the spirit of Ball State University,” Morales said.

Another person who voiced excitement about the changes was Director of Student Success and Honors First-Year Programs Ashanti Figures. She said the new wing will allow the honors faculty to work closer together, which will, in turn, allow students to work closer with faculty.

“The additional space will allow for students to engage with programming put on by the Honors College, as well as honors student clubs and organizations,” Figures said.

Figures also thinks having this new structure will allow for more community in the college by having additional classrooms

for student use.

“[The] connection to the Honors College is meant to last a lifetime,” Figures said.

By having these connections with donors and past Cardinals, the new renovations allow the college to elevate and celebrate the current students, Figures said.

Figures expressed her gratitude for the donors who made the remodeling possible.

“We are very grateful for everything our alumni and donors do, and have done, for the Honors College,” she said.

Ally Becki: ‘A winner’

Ally Becki: ‘A winner’

Ally Becki is a lot of things: a champion, an MVP, a student, a basketball player, a Ball State legend.

Her legacy spans 137 games, a MidAmerican Conference (MAC) Tournament Championship, an appearance in the 2025 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, countless awards and countless records.

Ball State women’s basketball head coach Brady Sallee said it was genuinely exciting to see Becki progress on the court over four years. He said Becki transformed from a pass-first player into the face of the program — a “winner at a different level.”

“I think the beauty of how she ended it, being the player of the year and winning championships, was that she did not win it

because she scored the most points,” Sallee said. “She won it because she is a winner.”

The point guard was not heavily recruited out of high school, and Becki said Ball State was always the school for her with Sallee at the helm.

Throughout the recruiting process at Ball State, Dave Becki, Ally’s father, said associate head coach Audrey McDonald-Spencer and Sallee were alongside Ally in every way possible.

“They supported her along the way and gave her opportunities to excel,” Dave said.

The first opportunity was an exhibition game in her freshman season. She came into the locker room to see her name on the whiteboard. She was in the starting lineup.

“I was like, ‘What?’ My hands started sweating,” Becki said. “I was shooting air balls in the warmup, but it was a turning point in my collegiate career, even though it had just started.”

Becki has been a starter for Ball State ever since.

“I don’t even know what Brady saw in me when I was a freshman, but he put me in the starting lineup,” Becki said. “Whatever his reasons were for starting me just opened my eyes that he trusted me from the beginning.”

In 2022, 2023 and 2024, Ball State fell short of winning the MAC Tournament. Becki and the Cardinals played in the championship in 2022 and were bounced in the second round in 2023 and 2024. But in failure, Becki said she grew.

Through the seasons of coming up short, the college athletics world was changing around her. Athletes could now transfer in the portal and get paid with name, image and likeness. Regardless of the athletic world evolving around her, leaving Ball State was not an option for her.

The Ball State women’s basketball point guard reflects on her four-year career as a Cardinal.

“It was a thought for a second, but I knew I wanted to win,” Becki said. “If I had gone to a small Power Four school and played well, I would not have won anything … I wanted to win something, and I knew I could do it here. That is way more meaningful to me than having an extra 1,000 bucks in my pocket.”

In 2025, her loyalty paid off with a MAC Tournament Championship. The Cardinals finally reached the goal they had for four long years.

As the confetti rained down in Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ally went over to her father and embraced him with a hug.

“That moment, I’ll cherish forever. It was a long hug,” Dave said.

Becki was named Tournament MVP and topped long-MAC-rival Toledo en route to cutting down the nets.

The win in the MAC Tournament meant that for the first time since 2009, Ball State was heading to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Becki said she would find herself going back on social media and scrolling through the memories of the 2025 season. She took “a week or so” after the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament to reflect and rest, but sure enough, she was back in the gym after the break.

Becki said seeing support within the Muncie community is rewarding. She said there have been occasions when someone would come up and talk to her about the Cardinals or just want to meet her. She said those moments never get old.

“I’ll be walking [my] dog, and I hear people say, ‘Congrats on the season,’” Becki said. “It’s just cool to see the impact we’ve made by just playing basketball.”

The Muncie community is also one that has grown in support of Ball State women’s basketball. From Becki’s freshman to senior season, the program had a 144 percent growth in attendance in Worthen Arena from 1,058 her freshman season to 2,587 her senior year.

Becki said she will forever remember the crowd support from the Muncie community and the iconic moments inside Worthen Arena from hosting ranked Notre Dame to nationally televised MAC games

“I’m just super grateful to put on a jersey and call Ball State my home,” Becki said.

Dave said it was rewarding to see Ally grow as a basketball player but, more importantly, as a person at Ball State.

“To see the joy that she has with people she interacts with, that is what makes it all so rewarding to see,” Dave said.

Sallee said he is not sure his opinion will go into hanging up Becki’s No. 0 in the rafters of Worthen Arena, but he wants to speak it into existence.

The head coach has said multiple times during the 2024-25 season that Becki should be up with Ray McCullough and Bonzi Wells.

He said one of the things he immediately noticed 13 years ago when he was hired was that two men’s jerseys were hanging and no women’s. He said there has not been a huge history in the program, except for the 2009 run and the history they are currently building.

“She did not just have a great career, she carried a program,” Sallee said. “You hang it up there because she is a winner and made us a winner … Every fan of Ball State would be proud to walk into the arena and see her name up there alongside two special players. Her name belongs in that group.”

Dave could only shake his head at the thought of his daughter’s jersey hanging in Worthen Arena.

“To see the impact she had and not fully realizing it to that extent, I am beyond proud,” Dave said. “If that does happen — to see it go up — I can’t wait to see her reaction. To see her react to that moment, that is going to mean the world to me.”

The senior is now in the process of figuring out her future. Becki said she is hopeful to be invited to WNBA training camps to get the experience and show her worth.

Becki said Sallee, McDonald-Spencer and her father have had their hand in helping her decide on which agent to choose for her career.

Dave said there is some uncertainty in this process, but it is going smoothly, with questions being answered as the process advances.

“It is important for her to find the right fit with an agent because it is an important part of being a great pro,” Sallee said. “She understands how important it is. Once it happens, it is just a matter of where she is going to end up, not if.”

‘Education is the answer’ ‘Education is the answer’

Ball State’s Jewish Studies Program continues to expand and educate as a result of the efforts from director Galit Gertsenzon.

Within the narrow, beige hallways of Ball State University’s North Quadrangle Building is room 215, the office of Sara Collas, an assistant teaching professor of sociology.

Collas’ office, live with the color of artwork and thankful, calligraphic inscriptions from former students, is a reflection of her artsy clothing style with chic plaid influences, the bright, big-toothed smile and warm handshake she offers when meeting someone new.

“I learned at a young age that color travels, and I thought, ‘This is the most exciting concept I’ve learned.’ I still use that concept. I love using color in my own self-expression,” Collas said.

The concept came from a lesson at the Cleveland Museum of Art, which Collas attended in the company of her twin sister as a

result of their mother’s strategic planning.

“Even though we were poor growing up, she was able to navigate ‘the system’ and get these scholarships for different, very middle class programs, like art lessons, at the Cleveland Museum of Art,” Collas said.

Various lessons about the vitality of art and culture at a young age shaped her, and the lessons extended at home. Collas said her mother — who died last year at age 92 — was not only “a great Jewish storyteller” but also “the most influential person in my life” with enough chutzpah, or audacious selfconfidence, to travel the world independently well into her 80s.

“My mom instilled a lot of confidence in me,” she said. “My mother always told me how beautiful I was, how smart I was [and] how special I was. I remember she always told me what a beautiful smile I had, and she thought one of the Kennedys would ask me to marry

him because I had such a beautiful smile.”

Though Collas did not have children with a Kennedy brother — much to the dismay of her mother — today, at age 61, she has found a way to honor her Jewish heritage in the absence of her mother from an opportunity provided by Ball State and Galit Gertsenzon, an assistant teaching professor at the university’s Honors College.

Gertsenzon hosts a variety of Jewish studies workshops upon taking the directorial role of the university’s Benjamin and Bessie Ziegler Jewish Studies Program in 2022. The intention behind those workshops, she said, is to provide the university and surrounding community with an understanding of, and appreciation for, Jewish history, culture and faith.

The presentations and revitalization work she has done for the decades-old program have left a lasting impact on colleagues and staunch proponents of the Jewish studies program like

Collas, who has invited Gertsenzon to speak to her Music and Art in Society class.

“Galit is an amazing writer, scholar, teacher and musician. Ball State University is so fortunate to have Galit here,” Collas said.

Although Gertsenzon wears many hats, she said her favorite is educating younger generations by helping them nurture their passion for music.

“I love music. I cannot see myself doing anything that doesn’t involve music,” she said. Her affection for rhythm and sound was fueled by a relentless desire to play the family’s piano like her older sister. The thenenvious six-year-old stubbornly begged her parents for piano lessons.

At the time, Gertsenzon said her parents “had no money,” but after two years, her grandmother was able to find a “very good” teacher whose price rates did not add to the family’s already-existing financial burdens.

Nearly two decades later, Gertsenzon was an intrinsically skilled pianist but had yet to grasp the mechanics of musical composition until graduate school, where she was introduced to — and entranced by — the work of Gideon Klein, a Czechoslovakian pianist and classical music composer in the early 20th century.

“The more I studied and played the music, I found there is so much more music that is unknown, even to this day,” she said.

That realization sparked a desire to know the unknown in all her endeavors, including that of her heritage, making her a lifelong learner and passionate educator.

Now, outside of her work at Ball State, Gertsenzon teaches private piano lessons to eager children like she once was.

“I see so much growth in the kids that I teach, and I have the privilege to become the

I had always thought about the Holocaust in terms of all the people that were killed, the millions of people. I thought of death. I thought of despair. I thought of tragedy. I had never thought about music and art during the Holocaust.”

music mentor. It’s the greatest gift I can ask for in professional work — to be someone who’s educating others,” she said.

When it comes to the Jewish faith, Gertsenzon is disheartened by a growing number of Holocaust deniers across the globe. Her sentiments were echoed by Collas who has noticed an increasing amount of anti-semetic behavior, particularly on college campuses.

A January 2025 worldwide report from The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference Organization) detailed that nearly half of all U.S. adults (49 percent) reported Holocaust distortion is “common,” with 38 percent of the country’s adults flatly denying it.

Those numbers, Gertsenzon said, are a byproduct of social media intake — particularly among millennials and Generation Z — which is creating a media literacy deficit.

“A lot of people now are getting their information from social media, and [social media] is based on other people’s opinions, not facts,” she said. “The Holocaust did not happen in one day. It happened as a series of very small steps.”

The same Claims Conference Organization report highlighted the more than threequarters (76 percent) of U.S. adults that

believe something like the Holocaust could happen today.

“History tends to be forgotten. History repeats itself. The Nazis did not seize power — they were elected. There were people who wanted them in power, and as soon as they took power, they abused the power to discriminate and murder millions of people,” Gertsenzon said, adding that amid all the questions, uncertainty and polarized political climate nationwide, “education is the answer.”

Collas has been attending Gertsenzon workshops since last summer and has been “blown away” ever since.

“I had always thought about the Holocaust in terms of all the people that were killed, the millions of people. I thought of death. I thought of despair. I thought of tragedy. I had never thought about music and art during the Holocaust,” she said.

Gertsenzon’s breadth of knowledge relating art and music to the Holocaust comes from a class she’s spearheaded since 2018 through the Honors College.

The course, though previously offered only online, will now be offered in person and branch out to encompass not just the Holocaust but the artistic influences of WWII as a whole. Gertsenzon said the inclusion is intended to illustrate the quantity of minority groups persecuted by the Nazis.

“One thing I learned in the Jewish storytelling workshop was how all oppressed groups use humor to deflect our pain, our struggles [and] our hardships,” she said.

Collas’ eye-opening lesson of humanitarian commonality reflects Gertsenzon’s mission for the Jewish studies program and its sister workshops and classes.

“My goal as an educator is to teach about things that happened. If my family didn’t survive, I would not be here,” Gertsenzon said. “They survived. I have family members who died in the Holocaust, and I have family members who survived, and thanks to them, I’m here,” she said.

When she faces opposing pitchers, Ball State softball redshirt senior McKayla Timmons is usually “pitched around.”

“At first, I was like, ‘Well, I put five years of blood, sweat and tears in this just for them not to pitch to me,”’ Timmons said. “So, it’s frustrating at first, but after trying to change my perspective on it, it’s a sign of respect.”

The Cardinals’ catcher has 40 walks on the season. Though she may not have expected that, she was already a player who was in the eyes of people in Division I softball. From being ranked No. 36 in Softball America’s top 100 player’s list to other preseason honors, she was thought to be one of the best coming into this season.

The reason? Her coaches and teammates think it’s because of her work ethic.

“Everyone around here knows how hard she works. It’s the intent, the focus and commitment to the details of every single piece of the game,” Ball State softball head coach Helen Peña said. “... If you are committed to the process and you give everything that you have every day, that’s what shows up on and off the field.”

Timmons was born to two teenage parents in Lithia, Florida. From a young age, she saw her

father David provide for the family with two jobs and a third shift for seven days a week. Her mother, Katherine, is disabled and was in a wheelchair and used a walker when McKayla was a child.

“My mom would give anything to be in the body that I have right now,” McKayla said. “I’m physically able to do anything I want. Thinking of her every day before practice or games or whenever things get hard, [I think] if she can do it, I can do it.”

She admits that perspective did not kick in until college. Even when it came to softball in high school, she had a mindset where she didn’t do the extra stuff that she does now.

But after getting to Ball State, that changed, as she wanted to be the best version of herself she could be.

“In my head, one rep could be the difference between hitting a game-winning home run or the other team winning,” McKayla said. “One rep is the difference between me being No. 5 in the country as opposed to No. 6.”

She also grew to realize that she wanted to get more out of those reps.

“My first couple of years in college, I was quantity over quality,” McKayla said. “I couldn’t figure out why things weren’t connecting. But now, I’m not afraid to take a day off if I’m not feeling good, and I’m not as quick to beat myself up if I have a bad practice or game.”

It was never about the money. It was more so about the experience and how I wanted my college experience to go.”

But it wasn’t just her game she wanted to improve. Under Peña, the Cardinals are a team that pushes themselves to be just that: a team. McKayla said she felt that when she first got to Muncie and wanted to be the best teammate possible.

Part of McKayla’s process to be that person started in the bullpen with the pitching unit. To her, the relationship with the pitchers is a ‘difference maker’ in the field.

“I’ve definitely grown to love the bullpen, and I [now] love catching bullpens,” McKayla said. “I’m always the first one to ask for actual bullpens or if I could catch a pitcher. The relationship you build in the bullpen [is huge].”

In her time at Ball State, Timmons has 54 home runs, 195 hits and a career batting average of .387. Because of the hard work and positive attitude she brings every day, along with the achievements, Peña said other Cardinals can learn from their starting catcher.

“She’s definitely a leader when it comes to her work ethic, mindset and being an elite competitor,” Peña said. “That’s what you have to have. You have to believe that you can do it before you actually do it. And even if you get beat, you’ve got the next one, so she brings that confidence every single day, which breeds into the rest of the team.”

Though the success, stats and accolades have

piled up higher and higher each year, McKayla never thought about leaving Ball State.

“It was never about the money. It was more so about the experience and how I wanted my college experience to go,” McKayla said. “... I really was blessed with this last coaching staff, and I get to finish my career with them. I wouldn’t have left for any other coaching staff at any other school in the country.”

After Ball State, her goal is to play professional softball. She’d love to get a chance with the national team and maybe play in the Olympics. But another job that has piqued her interest is being a strength and conditioning coach.

“I just love the athlete mindset. I just love everything about it,” McKayla said. “I love the work ethic. I love the grit. So just being around an environment of competitive people and competitive excellence would be a dream for a career.”

Though she knows her time as a Cardinal is coming to an end, she’s taking it day by day. She advised younger athletes to do the same thing.

“You can’t take a moment for granted. I remember hearing seniors when I was a freshman, talking about it going fast,” she said. “I’m looking at one more month now, so just take it all in, being appreciative of every single opportunity, chance and piece of

equipment you’re given. Not everybody has this opportunity, and some people would die to be in my shoes.”

When you ask other Cardinals about her, they echo what Peña said about McKayla’s work ethic and energy. But the other thing that sticks out to them is not her stats, her ability to play the game or even anything softball-related.

It’s how she treats everyone else.

“I’ve said this for the last three years. She is the hardest worker I think I’ve ever played with in my 17, 18 years of softball,” Ball State redshirt junior Katie Van Der Mark said. “She’s humble and is really passionate about this game. I think when your heart is in the right place, you’ll find success.”

‘Freedom

Letting Go’

My time here made me realize I’m more than my academic career.

Kate Farr is a third-year journalism major and writes “Face to Face” for the Daily News. Her views do not necessarily reflect those of the newspaper.

Valedictorian. Four-year varsity crosscountry runner and women’s team captain. National Honor Society President. Editorin-chief. Managing editor. Photo managing editor. President of the Ohio Scholastic Media Association Student Board. First Ohio representative for the Quill & Scroll Student Board. School and community theater. Choir. Future Teachers of America …

The list didn’t stop. It was an endless cycle of titles, responsibilities and rehearsals. Practice from 3:00 to 5:00. Quick turnover and cover an event for the yearbook. A 20-minute break for dinner. Five hours of homework. Run through lines. Edit photos. Finish class readings. Shower. Try to sleep. Toss. Turn. Up again at the crack of dawn. Repeat.

If I got an A- on a test, it meant sobbing for 15 minutes and not eating at lunch. If I couldn’t figure out a math problem, it meant digging my nails into my palm until I could see little red half-moons.

I spent hours feverishly mulling over textbooks, obsessively formatting study guides, combing through project rubrics to squeeze out the highest grade, meeting with teachers to make sure I was doing my homework just right, doing this, doing that, being the ideal student, being the ideal college applicant.

It was constant. Fight or flight, a panic bubbled

to the surface every time I opened my grade book. I would be struck with a hot, sickening chill at the sight of anything below a 96. My fingers would twitch and grip my wrist as if pain could somehow expel anxiety from my body. I had to be perfect.

I had to be in the top position of every organization, highest AP score, top-ranked student, flawless GPA, lead in the musical, soloist, strongest résumé, impeccable example, most involved, most impressive.

Everything, everywhere, all the damn time.

And then I got into my dream schools. I had the acceptance emails, the congratulations with exclamation points and digital confetti. But when I saw the cost, the facade I had built around academics and extracurriculars crumbled. I couldn’t afford it.

All the work, all the pressure and all the pain didn’t matter. It felt like I’d lost half of myself. I’d pushed myself to the breaking point time and time again for something I’d been told was in reach.

Out of every school, I made the decision to come to Ball State. It was the one school with the free application, and in the end, the only one I could realistically attend.

Little by little, the pressure lifted from my shoulders. I had to ask myself: What if it doesn’t matter? Who the hell else cares anyway?

I didn’t have to be perfect. No one cared, except me. And that was strangely and beautifully freeing. I started small.

I let myself get a B. I skipped a class here and there. I stopped putting hours into assignments. I took nights off. I stopped punishing myself for grades that fell short of

academic perfection.

It was liberating to see my GPA get knocked down from a 4.0 to a 3.9. There’s freedom in letting go, getting off the roller coaster and accepting that perfection isn’t an attainable goal.

Now, as I stand on the edge of college graduation, I want to acknowledge that past version of myself — the one whose worth depended on percentages and positions.

I don’t regret the drive or passion that I instilled in myself. I am proud of what I accomplished, how far I came. But I learned that the anxiety, the disappointment and the heartbreak weren’t worth the achievements.

The achievements didn’t sustain me, didn’t carry me when everything else was bogging me down. And I know now that it also didn’t define who I was.

Your education isn’t meant to be a sprint filled with scuffed knees and palms, pulling yourself from the ground after every blunder.

I let myself take the past three years slowly and steadily. Sure, I didn’t do the typical fouryear undergraduate track, and — as I’m only graduating at 20 — I’ve had my fair share of missteps in my journey to walk across the stage.

Life isn’t a linear path, and I still have much to learn. What matters most is that this time I learned how to rest, ask for help and find joy even in all of the hard times.

That’s how I define my success this time around. Instead of checking every box, I chose to live the past three years imperfectly, honestly and freely.

This time, I did it for myself.

Igniting the

FIRE FIRE

Olivia Ground is a fourth-year advertising major who writes “Liv, Laugh, Love” for the Daily News. Their views do not necessarily reflect those of the newspaper.

There are very few memories I have from high school that I will never be able to let go of.

I will never forget the sinking feeling I got when I found out that I was never going to get my senior season of band. The season I spent nearly five years waiting for, dreaming of and anticipating.

The traditions I loved and couldn’t wait to see myself in: senior speeches, standing in front of the stands of parents to accept awards — all of it gone in one fatal blow to my well-being.

I picked up the pieces the best I could. I watched my senior class’s parents do everything they could to make some sort of normalcy in the season. As much as I appreciated it, it was not enough to heal the growing depression that was consuming me.

This sinking feeling is one that I know I am not the first one to talk about. I was not the only student to lose something to the pandemic, and I know my loss does not come anywhere close to the lives lost to the pandemic.

But it was never just the hope of a senior season that died. It was my ambition, my joy and my passion.

My passion has always been my strongest personality trait. I love people and things passionately. Music and band were my passion, and it was gone.

I spent most of the pandemic, lockdown and the “return to the new normal” of senior year

a shell of myself, lost in my head as I looked desperately for anything that was going to make me as happy as marching band made me. I needed a new thing to find peace in.

When it came time to go to college, I picked a major and a minor I thought I could find passions in. I settled in the advertising program with a focus on journalistic narrative writing — I always had a passion for storytelling. But up to that point, my only storytelling was through the marching arts.

And I thank God every day that I made that choice because college was the best thing to happen to me.

I joined the Ball State Daily News in my first semester as a freshman. I had no interest in newspapers or journalism, but there was a promise made to me that I could do social media work then and, now, no waiting until I had taken the right classes first.

And that was enough for me. I had a career planned for me in social media management.

And in this life, to love something so much that it ignites a passion that drives you to do good in this world is the biggest gift a person could receive.”

My family, who knew I was struggling, encouraged me to go to college and try to embrace something new. My mother gave me the best advice she could — to go and find my people and to do good things. I packed up my bags and made peace with what I was leaving behind and headed to Ball State.

I expected a few years working behind the scenes on social media, a line on a resume, and a fast track out of college early and into a job. I didn’t think I would have to meet anyone or be around people. I thought that I could keep to myself, all of which sounded appealing to an anxious 18 year old.

And then an editing role opened up to oversee social media, and I took it. Before I knew it, I was writing almost every week, taking pictures and I was designing multiple projects. I was meeting the people that I love so dearly now. I couldn’t get enough of the newsroom, the staff and the ever-so-rewarding job of telling the news.

Journalism, and all the things that came with it, was like an insatiable hunger in me. Every byline, every photo, every like on social media was creating a fire in me to keep going. It was addictive.

ANOTHER CHAPTER COMPLETE

My time at Ball State is nothing like I thought it would be, but everything I hoped it could be.

Fourth-year journalism and media design and development student Amber Pietz is photographed April 17 holding her camera gear at Scheumann Stadium. Pietz will graduate with a degree in journalism and media design and development. ANDREW BERGER, DN

Amber Pietz is a fourth-year journalism and media design and development major and writes “A journal from a photojournalist” for the Daily News. Her views do not necessarily reflect those of the newspaper

Everything happens for a reason.

That’s something I have been telling myself for the past year. It’s easy enough to say to yourself but harder to believe when you have your heart set on something. When I first got to Ball State University, I was in the middle of finding myself again. I left behind a part of myself and knew it was better for me in the long run to find something else to focus my attention on, and I did just that.

I have always been someone who gives 110 percent to things I’m passionate about. Growing up, that included 14 years of dance, performing and the yearbook that I joined during my sophomore year of high school. Ever since then, it’s rare to see me without a camera in my hands. I met the former adviser of the Unified Media Lab the day after I moved into the dorms, and I can say with certainty that it was the best decision I ever made for myself.

I got to a point where I knew that I wanted to pursue sports photography professionally, and I wanted to do anything I possibly could to make that a reality. I started by going to every sports meeting to get to know the reporters and signed up to photograph any game I could. I took them up on every opportunity that was thrown my way, which was more than I could have dreamed of.

I know that whatever opportunities come my way, none of them would be possible had I not put the time and effort into growing my work and taking advantage of opportunities.

For a long time, the sidelines was always an escape for me — somewhere I knew I could go to forget about whatever it was I had going on for a few hours, cover a game and enjoy what I was doing. I fell in love with the storytelling that happens at a game.

Every game is its own story. There are different aspects of a game you can focus on, and emotions can be incredibly high. It wasn’t until my third year, when I became the student university photographer and editor with Ball State Marketing and Communication, that I had the creative freedom to try, to mess up and grow my work. I started paying more attention to all the different aspects of the game and different perspectives I could use to tell the story through photos.

all the time that I have put into this. I’ve spent countless hours covering games and a variety of university events during the last four years.

I’m reminded by the photographers I work with that I deserve to be here, and I will find the right thing at the right time after I graduate. I know that I can not only lean on them but also my friends I’ve met at the Ball State Daily News (DN) for support.

I know that everything that’s happened — the good, the bad and the ugly —- made me stronger. Then, more than ever, I knew where I was meant to be.”

Every person I met while at Ball State has contributed to making me the person I am today, and I truly believe that I met each one of them at the moment that I needed to. From the three senior design editors and the photo editor my freshman year — who I don’t think I would have made it through that year without — to everyone I have had the joy of traveling with over the years, to the university photographers I have had the pleasure of working with and learning from the past two years, and everyone on the current staff of the DN.

“behind the scenes,” that you might miss

told me, “It’s about finding ways to make

While I will forever and always love the action, I love the emotions and features you can find at a game, moments that feel “behind the scenes,” that you might miss if you were watching it from home. A talented photographer once told me, “It’s about finding ways to make your work stand out in the ocean of images that are created every day.”

There are still times where I have imposter syndrome, where I wonder if I’m good enough to be where I am and to have had the opportunities that I’ve been given. But then I remember

I know that everything that’s happened — the good, the bad and the ugly — made me stronger. Then, more than ever, I knew where I was meant to be. From the experiences I’ve had to the friendships I’ve made, I know that amidst the unknown that the future holds, I will always keep these past four years very close to my heart.
