Introducing the SSL Times Staff 2018-2019

When asked why they joined newspaper club, our staff had the following to say:

Ben "The reason I joined Newspaper Club was I enjoyed The inaugural edition of the SSL Times has been a long and educational journey for our newspaper staff! We started in our first lunch-time meeting by discussing what roles would be needed within the staff. Ben Clarke was elected Editor-in-Chief, with Theo Buscher acting as his photography editor.

It soon became clear that a sub-editor would be needed and Raphael Bucka was promptly appointed. The rest of the staff decided to volunteer for a mixture of jobs, including reporting, layout, graphic design and cartoonist.

Grace "I've really enjoyed newspaper club because I enjoy writing."

Raphael "I am graphic designer and sub-editor, I joined because I wanted to be part of the school community."

Theo "I joined the newspaper club because a lot of my friends were doing it so I thought, why not. It also turned out to be fun and I got a job of photographer and choosing the photos for the first edition."

SSL re-enacts the Battle of Hastings

After disposing of their bags in their lockers, the eager students rushed into Mrs Kemmett’s form room, keen for the register to begin, and for the day to start. For today was the Battle of Hastings! After an uneventful registration, the two Houses of Amsterdam and Gouda set off babbling excitedly and soaking in the jealous looks thrown in their direction by the envious Leiden and Delft citizens, toward the DT rooms to create the most amazingly cool things that school could have conquered… Anglo-Saxon and Norman WEAPONS!

On the 8th of October 2018, the day dawned, cool and misty, and as the students emerged from the fog they had no idea what the day would hold, or of the trauma that stood before them. Groaning because of the sleepless night beforehand, they trudged up the steps to school, excitement dancing in their eyes.

SSL re-enacts the Battle of Hastings

Exactly one hour and seven minutes later, Delft (having spent an hour outside throwing foam darts at each other) grouped together with Leiden (who came swaggering out of room 007 after a successful morning of animating) to create the Anglo-Saxon and Norman Weapons that Amsterdam and Gouda had made earlier, while Amsterdam and Gouda split up to learn about projectiles (Gouda) and to animate the Bayeux Tapestry (Amsterdam) One Amsterdam student said that animating the Bayeux Tapestry was quite tricky; cutting the different shaping in the 15 minutes they had to finish it in.

Spotlight on an Autumn Festival: Halloween by Eloise Halloween History: From a Celtic festival to trick or treating on the 31st of October!

The origin of Halloween can be traced back to 2,000 years ago when a Celtic festival called Samhain (pronounced sow-win) meaning summers-end, was celebrated. The Celts believed that on that day the dead would walk amongst the living and that the living could visit the dead.

Some Celts wore ghoulish costumes because they thought that wandering spirits would mistake them for one of their own and leave them alone. Other Celts offered sweets to the spirits to bribe them to leave them alone.

Fun Recipes For Halloween Here's how to make yummy Halloween themed marshmellows and a peek-a-boo ghost pound cake.

Ingredients

by Eloise Ingredients for 1 serving marshmallow candy melt, colors of your choice white food gel pen black food gel pen pretzel stick green m&ms oreo cookie mini chocolate chips lollipop stick Preparation Microwave candy melts for 60 seconds. Stir half way.

Stick marshmallows on lollipop sticks and dip into candy melts.

Set them aside until they have hardened.

Decorate your monster marshmallows however you like.

Enjoy!

for 8 servings 1 vanilla pound cake 1 box pound cake mix 1 tablespoon cocoa powder ½ stick butter 3 oz chocolate, melted (85 g) ⅔ cup milk (155 mL)

2 eggs Preparation Preheat the oven to 350˚F (180˚C).

Line a 8x4-inch (20x10 cm) loaf pan with parchment paper and generously grease the pan.

Slice the vanilla pound cake as the same thickness as a ghost shaped cookie cutter. Cut out the cake with using a ghost-shaped cookie cutter. Set aside.

In a medium bowl, combine pound cake mix, cocoa powder, butter, melted chocolate, milk, and eggs. Mix until well combined.

In the lined and greased loaf pan, add ⅓ of the batter.

Line the cut out ghost-shaped pound cake in the middle of the pan.

Pour rest of the batter over the ghost-shaped cake.

Smooth the top and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until inserted toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely on cooling rack
