Team Spirit wins out in Kazhakstan – COBIS Junior Games In June our BSN junior athletes experienced an amazing few days competing at the COBIS Junior Games – a competition hosted by Haileybury Astana School in Kazhakstan. The team travelled with PE teacher coaches, Howard Shore and Scott McRae, as well as Jess Apps and Junior School Vlaskamp Headteacher, Sue Aspinall who were thoroughly impressed by the spirit and determination of the team. Our children competed and mixed fantastically with the other students from 15 schools across the world,

making many friends along the way. What was particularly striking was the encouragement they gave each other, even when competing against each other in the same event. During the swimming discipline, it was impressive to see Rafae Shafi competing to such a high level despite dislocating his knee cap less than two weeks before the tournament started. As Howard Shore explains: “There were so many outstanding athletics performances it would be unfair to single anyone out – the whole team were setting personal bests and raising their levels far beyond their expectations. The level of skill and beautiful football played by our boys was the talk of the tournament. However, the way our girls team bounced back from

disappointment to win their last three matches, typified the resilience and fighting spirit of our whole team throughout the tournament.” This year’s team brought home more medals than ever before (over 20), and won the respect and admiration of their competitors. The boys’ football team were the talk of the tournament with their silky skills elevating them head and shoulders above the rest on their way to winning the competition. No one left Kazakhstan thinking that they could have possibly put any more effort into the competition. The BSN were 5th overall in the swimming, 2nd overall in the athletics, 1st overall in the boys football, 9th overall in the girls football and 4th in the overall competition.
