EDITOR'S NOTE:

It’s 3 days from deadline and your magazine isn’t even halfway through completion. Stress is high and you’re working late into the evenings to finish this edition. You have re-read the

material over and over to the point where you could probably recite it in your sleep. What happens if an error ever makes it into print? Worse, what happens if said error is on the cover? There isn’t an editor alive who won’t have a small panic attack reading this, or maybe reading the typo on the cover of their magazine in it’s final form.

Reading the above you’ll probably get a taste on how it feels to be an editor- thankfully, I haven’t come across an error which has been printed onto our magazines but as much as I think that a day like that will never arrive, it probably will. To start, I would just like to add that making mistakes is okay, we are humans, it happens to the best of us. However, owning up to those mistakes is also okay. We live in a fast world, it’s not an excuse. It’s the truth. A successful leader still has sharp focus, ruthless vision and extreme commitment to their duty. As a reminder to you, the reader and a reminder to myself. I offer the following solution. Slow down. Take breaks. Don’t be afraid of the noise and don’t let patterns trick you into a false sense of comfort and complacency.

And try not to beat yourself up when the inevitable ‘bad thing’ happens anyway.

Conveniently enough, this edition is all about laser sharp focus on the part of both, the institute, Bangkok School of Management and how we have just recently been accredited by ASIC, as well as the journey of our student, Naree Jampathiw and Alumni, Nitin Thapa.

We wish you the power to trudge through any mistakes you’ve made and enjoy this reading this edition!

Can you let us know how many people applied for the position and how many were chosen?

In the beginning I was made aware of this opportunity when listening to the radio in regards to accepting new students who would like to attend a cruise training program. It sounded exciting and so I approached the organization to get further information, after making my mind that this potential position would be a good match for me I decided to train with them for 2 months theoretically and later join them for a 3 month Internship. Before my internship was finalised I got an invitation to interview with the owner of the cruise ship company Fred Olsen Jr.. The interview went well and I was eventually offered the position of Guest Service Assistant. This was a great achievement as I was only the second Thai person who was asked to be a Guest Service Assistant as most Thai applicants are offered to be Assistant Bar Waitress’, Housekeeping Utility or Cabin Stewardess- these positions do not have much of a chance to interact with the various clientele that step onboard.

As for the applicants I feel like I was fortunate and must say that the Cruise industry has not yet completely caught the eye of the Thai market yet! People never think of it as a career option and so there were not many applicants in line. Another potential barrier is that the job requires a good command of English communication, which is the biggest challenge for Thai people to overcome.

Were there any ‘tough’ moments on the job?

One of my main challenges at the job was the terminology and jargon used on board. Another hidden challenge was dealing with people itself, the subtle communication cues and body language reading I had to analyse in my head when responding to customer demands at the cruise ship!

Plus working on cruise ship has no days off on the 8 month contract so it's full throttle 7 days a week 10hrs a day / 70hrs per week of work which I’m not used to but soldiered on and realise now how having an unbreakable work-ethic actually makes you a better person and contributes to future self-growth!

What kept you going on one of those tougher moments on the cruise?

This was probably the biggest challenge of my life. The work experience I had gathered in the past cannot compare to the work at the cruise ship- working here is dealing with a lot of pressure and making mistakes is extremely frowned upon since it is the service industry! However, I was blessed to work with a great team who always supported each other and tried to keep everyone the team involved in high spirits. As for the tougher moments, I always thought positively and stayed focus on the task at hand, I also learned not to rush and having the right information with clear instructions and permission is the most important part of the service industry.

Do you think the study at BSM somehow helped you go through the difficulties?

My time at BSM has enabled me to deal with people from different nationalities as all the classmates are from different countries. Academically BSM has enabled me to analyse and critique how businesses run, what are their targets and core value. One last thing I would like to stress on is how accommodating Bangkok School of Management has been to me, they have allowed me to keep on studying provided I complete my assignments and hand in my projects at a reasonable time. At the end of the day I'm glad I chose BSM.

Sports-Retail Complex to Rise near National Stadium

Uncle Fatty, is a 60 pounds (27 kilogram) overweight macaque. To put into context, most macaques weigh around 20 pounds (9 Kilograms).

The reason for Uncle Fatty, being Uncle Fatty is that he had been feasting on junk food and soda left by tourists, he resided in Bangkok’s Bang Khun Thian neighborhood.

The sports society is investing 300 Million THB to establish “Stadium One”, a retail complex that it says will be a landmark for sports lovers and will connect Supachalasai National Stadium with Chulalongkorn University’s Chamchuri Park.

Pongwat Tiyapornchai, manager of the Stadium One project said that the Sports Society had received a concession from Chulalongkorn University for construction and management of the complex on a 10-rai (1.6 hectare) plot behind National Stadium.

Pongwat said Stadium One would be a new landmark for Bangkok, attracting sports lovers and people looking for sports equipment and products in one place. It would also be a well-equipped centre for sports activities. With services including lockers, bathrooms and parking lots.

So far, about 40% of the space in Stadium One has been booked. The minimum rental rate is Bt350 per square meter.

Sales of health-related products and services have been growing consistently in Thailand, with the market for exercise and health-related products rising from Bt110 billion in 2012 to Bt160 billion in 2015, Pongwat said.

The macaque’s estimated age is around 10-15 years old and he particularly caught the eye of officials after reports of a monkey “being fat” surfaced. He has now been put into rehab and his new diet consists of 400 grams of Protein and Vegetables twice a day.

Kacha Phukem, the wildlife official who led the rescue has stated that catching Uncle Fatty was tough as, “he was the leader of his pack, when I tried to go in, I had to fight a flock of them with sticks.”

Apparently Uncle Fatty used to share his treats with other macaques, especially younger ones after he was done eating. Still, the kindness from Uncle Fatty has not helped in decelerating his chances of heart disease and diabetes. “After he ate food given by humans for a while, he developed a fat mass, which became type of a benign tumor. He is now in critical condition,” Supakarn said.

She also added that officials are hoping to bring Uncle Fatty back into shape and release him in the wild soon.

The School has earned Premier status with ASIC for its commendable areas of operation. ASIC accreditation helps students and parents make a more informed choice and will also help a school, college, university, training provider or distance education provider, demonstrate to the international student body that they are a high quality institution. ASIC is recognised by UKVI in UK, is a member of the CHEA International Quality Group (CIQG) in USA and is listed in their International Directory, is a member of the BQF (British Quality Foundation), are affiliates of ENQA (European Network for Quality Assurance) and are institutional members of EDEN (European Distance and ELearning Network). Dr Maurice also specified that this is the very first time ASIC has given out certificate of excellence to individual departments but it was warranted for BSM!

The event was followed up by a cocktail party at the BSM campus as we congratulated our recent batch of Post-Graduate Students who studied at Bangkok School of Management, who gave short speeches reminiscing about the good times they had studying and gelling with their batchmates who came together from all walks of life.

“When I think about the first time I came to BSM I distinctly remember the family-like acceptance I got, the staff were always smiling and Dr. Roy was energetic as usual. Before this, I was at a regular Thai University where every process was bureaucratic and tedious, and you felt like a cog in the larger system. BSM was different to that, the quality of lectures and flexibility, they even made arrangements for me to join the Thai Chambers of Commerce for an Internship, where else can you get that kind of treatment? All in all, I am very happy to have been a part of this institute and it will always hold a special place in my heart.”

PROJECT MANAGERS OF THE PHUENTSHOLING TROMDE (MUNICIPALITY) WORKING IN TANDEM WITH SOUTH ASIA SUBREGIONAL ECONOMIC COOPERATION (SASEC)

Working in Tandem with SASEC The Road Connectivity Project underwent an 8-Day intensive training on Project Management and Financing at Bangkok School of Management - with a focus on road and bridge construction projects in various parts of Bhutan. The training programme involved a few field visits, including a visit to the Saraburi-Korat highway (road) construction project supervised by Khun Noppadon, the Production Manager of The Crane Rayong Company Limited. Through the visit, the 5 officers from Phuentsholing Tromde were exposed to various practical elements and tasks of construction project management and financing, as practiced in Thailand.

Nitin Thapa recent BSM graduate and now International Sales Executive and Event On Boarding Agent at EBCG (European Business Conferences Group)- we take a trip down memory lane with him covering his time at Bangkok School of Management and what he is up to now.

Could you please describe your current job?

As an International Sales Executive and Event OnBoarding Agent at EBCG (European Business Conferences Group), I have the opportunity to work with real leaders in B2B Conferences. Our portfolio includes Senior Executives, Managers and Decision Makers from top global companies attending our events. I am directly responsible for gaining industry contacts as well as communicating with the prospective clients, helping generate sales through lead generation, networking, and other outbound marketing techniques and screening potential business deals by analysing market strategies

You just graduated in Dec. 2016 and have already been employed, can you share with us what convinced your employer to make the decision to hire you?

I was working in a digital marketing company as Sales and Business Development Intern in Bangkok while I was doing my final year of Northumbria University. In those few months, I was exposed to the corporate world, which gave me the opportunity to have a clear perspective on how things actually work on the corporate level. I had an opportunity to work with various international and experienced individuals who guided me throughout those few months, this made me confident and equipped me with right tools that I could use in any workplace. Also, the Degree from both BSM and Northumbria University added the plus point in securing my current employment at EBCG.

Studying at BSM provided me valuable insights into business topics both local and international.  The undergraduate program has allowed me to develop different professional skills.

How is work going so far?

Work is fantastic! The change to a new workplace was made easy by an initial training period, which was great. Management and other advisors are a very friendly bunch with the Team Managers being very helpful. Each day I get to learn something new- both from the clients and from my peers. What I like about my work is that they are constantly trying to enhance our productivity by focusing on employee development.

The projects I’m currently working on are Cyber Central 2017 and Phoenix 2017 (FinTech) - Fin Tech for Bankers - Bankers for Fin Tech.

Have you come across any challenges and difficulties in order to deliver your work and how did you overcome these difficulties?

Firstly, I had a problem figuring out how to be part of a new work culture and fitting in. Slowly I got to know my co-workers by working on team projects.

This promoted a common interest, building trust, and allies. While I was studying at BSM with multicultural students and professors, I learned that always being respectful, friendly, and having a good attitude and good work habits show that you are a professional. Also, I experimented lots of selfassessment test to enhance my skills, which I had applied during my course assessment at BSM. These assessments helped me to better understand my work environment and to adapt quickly.

Looking back to your study at BSM, do you think the knowledge and skills you acquired are practical for workplace?

Studying at BSM provided me valuable insight to business topics both local and international. Â The undergraduate program has allowed me to develop different professional skills. During our group projects, we used to work with various individual combining ideas and creating one common product, projects like these helped me to better understand about the importance of good team building, which I think is one of the most important factors that directly contribute to the success of any company.

The skills and knowledge I gained from the classes have an immediate impact on my current job performance, enhancing my business views and problem-solving capabilities.

Do you have any suggestions for the students and parents who are looking for business schools?

Yes! I would like to say that BSM is truly a unique institution, not only characterised by academic excellence, but also by motivated students and engaging professors. The interactions in the classroom were great but I was also amazed at how connected I felt. The program is fantastic, the staff makes you feel welcome and professors at BSM are the best. My undergraduate degree has been a valuable asset to me and has paid for itself over and over again. I will always be thankful for everything that I gained by being associated with BSM. I would recommend students and parents to consider BSM for unique International blended education.

EXPERT OPINION FIRST IMPRESSIONS There is a lot of research out there that says that first impressions still count – a recent article claimed that 67% of hiring managers are affected by the impression someone makes as they enter the room and in their very first utterances.

Mainly for the guys again but ladies are guilty too. Cool look I know – for the beach in particular – but our eyes say a lot about us and likely your target audience would want to see them. I was once developing an L&D team As someone who has met countless people (hundreds if not now thousands of and an obviously talented guy was not clients, hires and workshop trainees over receiving the positive feedback from the years) I have long been fascinated by participants expected. But, I chose not to click and there is a message in that somewhere.

And so: What to make of all this? A Linkedin member has recently written a more serious post, advising on how best to present ourselves on Linkedin and I defer to him for you to take advice.

However, I would point out that we are creating an impression with our photos, titles and brief statements in the gallery. I am a bit long in the tooth to appreciate some of the more creative and “stand out from the crowd” efforts – perhaps your target audience will be more enlightened ,but…….. maybe not.

Then again maybe I should try a Purple Mohican hairstyle – might get me work in the hairdressing industry but know what my 4 and 5 year old will say – “Scary Daddy”

Visit Your School's Career Center If you don’t have a dedicated career center, you can always visit the academic department of your institute- these are people with tons of experience in the academic field and will know just how to tweak your resume and polish your credentials in ways that display the best side of you to any potential employer! The Academic department/ Career Center also offers real-life advice on how to go about finding a job and can also connect you with their extensive alumni networks that you can get in touch with for all your career needs.

Make Yourself The Key Just like the great DJ Khaled has repeatedly said over the course of his snapchat career, “major key” is something you need to become. In other words, be indispensable, become that guy/girl who goes one step further in ensuring that your employers get the extra workload taken off their hands. In simpler terms, be a worker bee and don’t be afraid to take initiative. However, one thing to be careful of is not becoming the employee who is termed the boss's pet. Apart from that, just be a nice person, contrary to popular opinion nice guys (or girls) don’t finish last. Being pleasant and easy to work with is always a valuable asset. If you’re just starting out, just being polite might matter as much as the other talents you bring to the table.

Know Your Stuff Being a fresh graduate and getting a job is getting harder than ever due to our economic environment, employers not only see the name of the university you have graduated from but also what concrete skills you as an applicant have. So if you’re a marketing major, it’s knowing how to write good content for marketing or knowing the ins and outs of designing software. If you’re a finance major it’s about being a strong statistician. To get an edge over competing applicants you can always do free courses offered by top tier universities like MIT, Wharton, Stanford, online; just Google “Coursera” (seriously, do it.) and you can gain a certificate in whatever field you like to add onto your resume.

The Big Day AKA Your Interview Getting interviewed is always a big deal for any fresh graduate, lot’s of expectations, lot’s of nervousness but it doesn’t have to be that way- make any interview easy by practicing. That’s right, practice all you can, infront of a mirror, with a friend.

Do your research about the company and you may just find information about the types of questions they usually ask at their interviews.

TO FINDING A JOB Networking

Let’s be honest, how many times have you heard the word ‘networking’ over the course of your college life? It’s everywhere and now there are special events being held just to ‘network’.

So how important is networking? Well, according to a recent study conducted by Lou Adler, best selling author of the recent book: “The Essential Guide for Hiring and Getting Hired”- 85% of all jobs are filled in via networking. Networking is so important that you should have started networking yesterday.

It can seem daunting to network when you’re new to the country or not very social but with the help of your academic department or even a quick Google search on ‘meetup groups’ you can connect with people who are already doing what you want to do. Also, make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date, it helps more than you think.

Learn the Soft Skills So let’s say you’ve got the best resume you could ever have (for now), done your hard-work and picked up a couple of internships while still at university but what next? A walk in the park and whatever job you want is yours right? Not really...companies nowadays look for more than where you did your internships, they want to know more about you, were you the quiet one?

The funny one? It is all about culture, and if you don’t fit the culture of the workplace, you most probably will not get hired. So be sure to develop your soft skills, meaning, your conversation skills, leadership skills, time management abilities, self-confidence the list goes on and on.

Be sure to show your potential employees this at the interview or even on your resume if you can.
