PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Greetings from Benilde-St. Margaret’s!
The hallways are much quieter this time of year, giving us time to reflect on a year well lived at Benilde-St. Margaret’s. We pride ourselves on offering a holistic education that promotes balance among the head, the heart, and the body. This year we celebrate student accomplishments across all three.
For the first time in school history, BSM has three National Merit Scholars in the Class of 2025: Brynja Lockman, Lucy Loes, and Jonathan McMerty-Brummer. For Lockman and McMertyBrummer, this also includes perfect scores on their ACT college readiness exams. Three other seniors were also named National Merit finalists: Katherine Cornell, Liam Lynch, and Andrew Schmidt.
Other Red Knights who made history this year include our girls’ basketball team, who captured an amazing third consecutive MSHSL state title, and our Knightettes jazz dance team, who achieved back-to-back MSHSL state titles – their third state title in four years.
This issue of the Crown & Shield showcases these and many other student athletes, artists, and journalists who are sharing their talents with our community and beyond. The hard work and determination of these students exemplify what it means to be a Red Knight: recognizing their God-given gifts and their responsibility to use them in service to their community and the world.
Whether in one of our 46 EPIC internship experiences or 70+ co-curriculars, our students are taking advantage of the breadth and depth of opportunities at BSM to explore their passions and grow their talents.
Perhaps most importantly, 346 students participated in this year’s Red Knight Volunteer Corps, contributing thousands of service hours, making a positive impact in the greater Twin Cities and beyond. In June, 36 students served on BSM’s annual Guatemala Service Immersion Trip this summer.
We are beyond proud of the Class of 2025, and are so excited to see the mark they make in the colleges and universities they attend in the fall. In these quiet months, we are hard at work preparing to welcome the next generation of Red Knights – including our first-ever sixth grade class! – through our doors this fall.
I hope you enjoy this latest issue of Crown & Shield. Thank you for being a part of our Red Knight family, and welcoming the newest alums in your midst. You and your loved ones are always in my prayers.
The Crown & Shield is published for graduates, students, families, and friends of BSM. Please send news and photos (at least 1 mb in size) to alumni@BSMschool.org.
Delivery Notice
As part of our continuing efforts to reduce waste, we have limited the delivery of the Crown & Shield to one per household. If you hear that we have inadvertently left someone off the list, please contact us at alumni@BSMschool.org.
Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight.

BSM’S STATE TITLE STREAK
Benilde St. Margaret’s is known for excellence. Whether in the classroom, on the court, on stage, or in the spotlight, Red Knights have a passion for doing their best. Let’s take a closer look at some recent sustained success achieved by our students.

We knew we couldn’t do it without every single one of us buying in and doing that allowed us to have fun while doing it.”
McGee was injured her sophomore year and found her way back onto the court to contribute to this historic championship for her senior year. McGee said, “This was something big I missed out on two years ago, and it is truly a blessing to have come back and been able to experience it, being out there with my teammates and having each other’s backs like family.”
BSM girls’ basketball has formed a dynasty - where will they go from here? Kendall McGee thinks they will continue to thrive and carry on the culture they built this year. Coach Ellefson added, “We will continue to
What began as a dream in the gymnasiums of Benilde-St. Margaret’s has become two of the most dominant dynasties in state history. With 3 state titles in 3 years for the girls’ basketball team, and 3 state titles in 4 years for the BSM dance team, they haven’t just built winning teams—they’ve created a culture, a standard, and a legacy. The Knowledge Bowl team is jumping on the bandwagon and made school history this year by making it to the State Tournament for the first time, placing 4th. They went on to place 3rd at the national Knowledge Bowl competition. Behind all of these programs is a mentality, culture, community, and ethic that brought greatness to their respective programs.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP THREE-PEAT
Saturday, Mar. 15, 2025 the BSM girls’ basketball team won the MSHSL Class AAA State Championship, defeating the Marshall Tigers 73-57 at Williams Arena on the University of Minnesota campus. This was the team’s fifth State Title in school history, and only the sixth girls’ team in MSHSL history to win three consecutive state titles.

When asked, “What does it take to achieve excellence year after year?”
Coach Tim Ellefson said, “It is a buy-in from everyone involved. It is the desire to be perfect, knowing that we will never achieve it, but yet working towards it every chance we get.”
It takes more than skill to capture a three-peat of state championships. Ellefson said, “Culture isn’t about being joyful all the time, instead, it’s the understanding that we show up to pursue excellence and this can be challenging. We will welcome the tasks that will make us champions, and never defer to doing less than what is required.” Captain and senior, Kendall McGee, noted, “Our team is always uplifting each other as well as holding each other accountable in a healthy and supportive way.
On Friday, Feb. 14, 2025, the BSM Knightettes celebrated their third state title in four years at the Minnesota State High School League’s (MSHSL) Class AA Jazz Dance competition. Senior captain, Molly Giertsen, talks about what it means to be a Knightette. “Being a Knightette means striving to raise the bar in every aspect of life. Our team has earned more state championships than any other in the building, including an incredible 13 Jazz state titles since 1985. But beyond the trophies and titles, the true value of being a Knightette lies in what we learn along the way, whether it’s pushing ourselves in the gym to master a new skill, learning how to communicate respectfully and effectively with adults, or simply practicing kindness.

Being a Knightette teaches you how to be a well-rounded person.”
When you think about the dance program and its success, what are you most proud of?
“What fills me with the most pride is simply being a part of the BSMDT family. Beyond the trophies and natural talent, what truly sets us apart is our ability to come together and grow into exceptional people. Our coaches and alumni hold us Knightettes to a high, and ever-rising, standard, and each year’s team continues to meet it. That legacy of character and growth is what makes me proudest.”

When you think about what’s next and where you take the program from this moment on, what comes to mind?
“Over the past few years, BSMDT has worked hard to build not just a team of strong dancers but a team of strong people. We’ve dedicated countless hours to team bonding, extra training, and truly getting to know one another, because strong relationships can help create champions. And now, as one of the newest members of the BSMDT alumni, I’m honored to be joining another special family: one that continues to support and celebrate the Knightettes, in every season, in every outcome. Win or lose, we’ll always be cheering them on.”
THE BOWLER EXPRESS GOES TO STATE
Athletics are not the only way for our students to compete at the state level. Activities bring opportunities for higher competition as well. This year, the BSM Knowledge Bowl team made school history with their first State appearance. The Knowledge Bowl team, named “Bowler Express” to honor the legacy of beloved BSM math teacher Dan Bowler, who served as advisor for the team for many years, achieved new heights by setting various school records, including being the first BSM State Knowledge Bowl tournament appearance in school history.
For those who do not know, what is Knowledge Bowl and
Jonathan McMerty-Brummer ‘25 explained, “Knowledge Bowl and Quiz Bowl are competitive trivia competitions. Both involve working as a team to answer as many questions as possible. Questions can range from science, to math, to history, to literature and can involve things like sports, politics, current events, and internet trends.”
What does it mean to represent BSM and be a part of the Knowledge Bowl and Quiz Bowl community?
The teams achieved new heights with the various school records: first BSM State Knowledge Bowl tournament appearance in school history with a fourth place finish, seventh place at Quiz Bowl State tournament, third place at national Knowledge Bowl tournament, and two students competing in individual Quiz Bowl national tournament. We are most proud of the way that they represented what it means to be a Red Knight under the charismatic leadership of The Bowler Express who welcomed many new students to the program. This community has fostered us and we love giving back to it in any way we can.
What was the experience like being able to achieve this success together?
Jonathan: “It really felt like a culmination of our efforts over the last four years. Reaching the pinnacle of Knowledge Bowl in Minnesota really felt like our efforts had come to fruition. It showed our growth as students, competitors, and as friends. We couldn’t be more proud of our accomplishments and are happy we had the time together.”
Matt: “As the coach for the past five years, I have enjoyed watching the program grow, and I love that more Red Knights have become involved in an academic co-curricular activity. And as a parent, I have loved being able to accompany my two sons on this journey. Four of the five members of The Bowler Express attended kindergarten together at Good Shepherd. To see their journey come full circle and celebrate their success with them has been an experience that I will always treasure.”

HERE’S TO THE TOP OF THE CLASS OF 2025
Honoring Our
Top Ten Graduates
Meet the members of BSM’s Class of 2025 Top Ten. These students achieved the highest GPAs after seven consecutive semesters and exemplify what it means to be a Red Knight.
SEBASTIAN CERDA has enjoyed the hands-on learning opportunities that BSM has provided him in his four years as a Red Knight. “BSM goes far beyond the classroom to provide you with real-world experience,” he said. Cerda is taking his extensive experience in engineering to University of Wisconsin-Madison next year, studying mechanical engineering with a minor in Spanish. Cerda tells other Red Knights, “Value spending time with your friends because these four years will absolutely fly by.”
CLAUDIA KROLL will remember, most of all, the people she met here at BSM. She was excited each day to show up and get to see her friends, interact with her favorite teachers, and meet new people from different grades. “BSM allows you to foster deep relationships both with students and teachers, and I believe this creates the community we all know and love.” Kroll reflects on how it can all go by too quickly, encouraging younger Red Knights to live in the moment. “Remember to cherish the memories that you make everyday; the time goes by faster than you think!” Kroll will attend University of Wisconsin-Madison to study electrical engineering.
Pictured left to right: Jonathan McMerty-Brummer, Claudia Kroll, Madeleine Murry, Harriet White, Marina Vonhof, Annika Olson, Talia Loes, Brynja Lockman, Lucy Loes, and Sebastian Cerda
BRYNJA LOCKMAN feels that the teachers at BSM have been the backbone of her education, teaching and caring for her. “I feel truly seen by any of my teachers at BSM, and several have been extremely influential in my high school journey. They are unequivocally BSM’s greatest resource.” Lockman, a two-time National Speech and Debate Association Tournament qualifier, is attending Smith College, majoring in government and minoring in public policy. She hopes to expand upon the experience she’s gained as a writer for BSM’s Knight Errant by joining the student journalism organization at Smith.
LUCY LOES says that her experience at BSM has been highlighted by her experience in journalism class. “Not only has it given me the opportunity to talk to students and staff that I otherwise wouldn’t have met, but I’ve found an amazing community among the editors and writers on the Knight Errant.” Freshman Loes never would have guessed that she’d be this confident at the end of her senior year. She has expanded her horizons past the status quo, encouraging other Red Knights to do the same. “Don’t just stick to your group of friends. It’s important to reach out to your peers. You learn so much more from people who are different than you.” Loes will attend University of Notre Dame next fall.
TALIA LOES looks back fondly on her time at BSM, a journey framed by art classes, cross country meets, and writing a novel for her RED capstone project with her sister, Lucy. She looks forward to continuing these interests in college and hopes to join some art and writing related activities at University of Notre Dame, studying film, television, and theatre, or creative writing. “Work hard, don’t procrastinate too much, and try your best, but don’t beat yourself up about mistakes and being imperfect,” she advises underclassmen. “Your best is enough.” Loes’ varied interests have kept her chasing her passions throughout high school. “Chase your passions. It doesn’t matter if you’re told that you should or shouldn’t do it, you should always try.”
JONATHAN MCMERTY-BRUMMER
can’t remember his first day at BSM, he was only a preschooler as part of the Little Knights daycare program. He can, however, remember his first day as a Red Knight. When he walked through the BSM doors as a freshman for the first time, he knew this place would be truly special. A true member of the BSM family, McMerty-Brummer has dabbled in a little bit of everything, from becoming captain of the record-breaking Knowledge Bowl and Quiz Bowl teams to joining the BSM drama department for several shows. McMerty-Brummer will continue his education at University of Notre Dame in the fall, studying electrical engineering and exploring the activities that Notre Dame has to offer, including theater, volleyball, and model United Nations. He also plans to continue his involvement with God’s Child Project,
something he began during his time as a Red Knight. He leaves some knowledge to underclassmen making their way through high school, “It’s okay to ask for help, those around you want to be there for you.”
MADELEINE MURRY believes that BSM hasn’t taught her what to think, but taught her how to think. “Critical thinking skills have been drilled into me since I was a seventh grader, and I couldn’t be more thankful for it,” she shared. “I feel confident knowing I can make my own decisions by using both my faith and my knowledge to guide me.” She has built herself up on a foundation of faith, spending her senior year as a eucharistic minister at BSM. Murry will continue her academic pursuits at College of St. Benedict, studying nursing with a minor in Hispanic studies.
ANNIKA OLSON has spent much of her time at BSM helping others. As co-founder of the Caring for the Courageous club at BSM, she’s spent countless hours with her fellow Red Knights bringing joy to kids in children’s hospitals. “This will continue to make a wonderful impact and live on long after I graduate,” she said. “How the students and community got involved and supported our mission will always be such a positive memory for me!” Olson will attend Washington University in St. Louis, majoring in biology. She hopes the Red Knights after her will find balance in all that they do. “Don’t let one of your responsibilities or activities consume you. Try to find the right balance and still find time for the things you love!”
MARINA VONHOF remembers the first time she used the laser cutter in the engineering room. The hands-on opportunities that BSM offers through rigorous coursework and AP courses pushed Vonhof to her medical internship at the Westonka Clinic and eventually to a career in medicine. “I’ll always treasure the hours I spent in the engineering lab and the amazing teachers that challenged me to push myself outside of my comfort zone.” Vonhof will attend University of Notre Dame in the fall, studying chemistry.
HARRIET WHITE is headed to McGill University in the fall, pursuing a degree in Pharmacology on the pre-med track. While at BSM, some of her favorite memories were with her teammates on the girls’ swim and dive team. After six years as a Red Knight swimmer, White will continue her balance of school and life while swimming, nannying, and volunteering at her local hospital. “Everyone should maintain a good school-life balance. I really challenged myself in school and it paid off, but I was also involved in sports, multiple jobs, and my social life. I gave myself time to do the things that I enjoyed.”
PRESIDENT AWARD
In May, the BSM President’s Award was presented to five members of the Class of 2025 who have made a lasting impression while at BSM through individual contributions and leadership among the student body. President Danielle Hermanny ’03 noted their character, integrity, and representation of what it means to be a Red Knight serve as examples for all. Congratulations to Aspen Franklin, Lucas Guggenberger, Katherine Kapsner, Scarlett Lira, and Thomas Staples.
President’s Award Winners
FONDLY REMEMBER THEIR BSM EXPERIENCES:
Winners

ASPEN FRANKLIN ‘25 “I have found all of the internship opportunities extremely helpful. I like how BSM has a range of different lengths and multiple different types of internships to figure out what works best for me. I did the hockey marketing internship, athletic training internship, as well as 2 of the single day “internships” – Minnesota Timberwolves & Lynx career in sports night & University of St. Thomas innovation day. I will be attending Marquette studying exercise physiology on the direct admit PT track.”
LUCAS GUGGENBERGER ‘25 “The most meaningful part of my experience at Benilde-St. Margaret’s was the relationships that I built with friends, coaches, teachers, and staff. Many of these relationships have made a lasting impact on me and I will continue to connect with them for the rest of my life!”
KATHERINE KAPSNER ‘25 “When I first came to BSM, I was extremely nervous and scared, but immediately I was welcomed by my teachers and classmates. As my time at BSM progressed, I was able to build off of those relationships. Now I have a great group of friends that I am extremely close with.”
SCARLETT LIRA ‘25 “BSM has shown me how to make an impact not only in the classroom with the help of the amazing teachers, but also how to create change in my community. In my discipleship class, I had the chance to learn about service while also volunteering at a nearby elementary school which I am still with a year later. BSM creates a plethora of opportunities to expand our learning further than the classroom which has immensely impacted my education journey.”
THOMAS STAPLES ‘25 “What I loved about BSM was the familiarity. No matter where you go or what you do, you know someone doing it and you’re always familiar with everyone.”

Honoring Graduates Who Uphold
Al Reger’s Legacy
Al Reger loved BSM. So much, that in 1970, he led the effort to save Benilde High School from possible closure. His dedication to Catholic education made it possible for our community to identify a solution and rally individuals to ensure the school never closed. Today, BSM thrives because of Reger’s legacy and the countless people who support Benilde-St. Margaret’s. In recognition for his dedication to BSM and Catholic education, each year two members of the graduating class receive the Al Reger award for their leadership and service to the community.
This year’s Class of 2025 is composed of many students who are passionate Red Knights, and two in particular stand out for their outstanding dedication and zeal to the service of God and School. The two seniors receiving this year’s Al Reger award have modeled the example of dedication and zeal displayed by the award’s namesake.
The recipients of the award are nominated and selected by a vote of the entire faculty and staff. Both winners exemplify the qualities we desire in our students: recognizing their God-given talents and accepting the responsibility to use them in service to the world.
AMELIA LYNCH has been active and dedicated in her years at BSM. She is quietly confident, but not afraid to advocate for herself or others if she sees something unfair or unjust. She is curious and self-motivated, participating in, among other things, Mock Trial, the Guatemala service and immersion trip, and playing on the soccer team. She also stole the show playing the lead in this year’s spring music, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical and knocked everyone’s socks off with an incredible stage performance. She is also committed to the community, serving on the Youth for Change Coalition through Children First, an organization in St. Louis Park.
Her collaboration and kindness and generosity with peers and teachers alike is what makes her so inspirational to everyone in the BSM community. You can’t help but be a better person for knowing her, or a harder worker or fiercer advocate for having known her. Amelia will head to the University of Puget Sound this fall.
JONATHAN MCMERTY-BRUMMER is a true leader and example of what it means to be a Red Knight. He is steady, kind, and selfless. He is a truly exceptional student, exemplified not only by the courses he takes, but by the hard work he puts into them. In 2023, Jonathan earned a perfect score on his ACT exam, something only 5,000 students in the U.S. achieve. As a member of the Class of 2025, he holds one of the top academic GPAs among his peers.
He also is active at BSM by participating in Mass, tutoring other Red Knights in a variety of subjects, and is bilingual, having served on the annual Guatemala Mission trip three times. Jonathan also discovered his talent for acting in multiple drama productions, while also being captain of both the Knowledge Bowl and Quiz Bowl teams that competed at State. His leadership in those clubs led to success previously unmatched, including an individual school record.
But perhaps even more importantly, and a reflection of his ability to engage with those around him with respect and compassion, more students participated in the clubs thanks to his leadership. Jonathan is someone people want to be around, and someone our community is blessed to count as a Red Knight and soon to be a star at the University of Notre Dame.
Both Amelia and Jonathan carry forward Al’s legacy by being

The Sticks Have It
Give these two outstanding Red Knight student athletes a stick (of nearly any kind) and they are ready to compete. Both Bailey Gray, Athena winner, and Carter Callan, Al Blasing winner, spend the winter at the rink wielding hockey sticks against opponents. In the spring, Bailey uses her lacrosse stick to strengthen the Red Knight defense while Carter is on the links, golf club in hand.

Bailey is a two-sport student-athlete. Pre-high school she spent time on the pitch with soccer but in high school she chose to concentrate on hockey and lacrosse. The many accolades that she earned along the way include numerous conference and all-state honors.
In hockey, Bailey was coached by her father Kevin and Kelly Pannek ’14. That was a unique situation for the team captain. “Playing for my dad was amazing. I got to spend quality time with him both with hockey and life. I was able to learn so much from him. I’m so grateful that he was my coach.”
It was lacrosse that put a state championship on Bailey’s resume. She was a starter on the team that won the title in 2023, was named to the All-Tournament Team in 2024 when the Red Knights earned third place, and was captain of the 2025 team. According to coach Ana Bowlsby, “Bailey kick starts the speed of the team off the draw. Her positive energy and competitive spirit embody what we try to be.”
Bailey will continue her academic and hockey journey at the University of Delaware.
Carter has also collected numerous honors in his athletic pursuits. Three letters in hockey and four in golf provide ample opportunity for academic and athletic awards. Varsity hockey coach Ken Pauly notes, “Carter’s love for his athletic endeavors is clear for anyone to see. It’s the key to his success. He is a perfect mix of talent, passion, and great attitude. I can’t think of a better ambassador for BSM.”
Golf coach Dave Herbst echoes that same theme when talking about his team captain. “Carter has a drive in him to achieve his goals by hard work and dedication in golf. When his game gets going, there is nobody going to stop him.” And no one stopped the 2024 golf team. The Red Knights brought home the state championship trophy!
A strong student-athlete, Carter will play golf for the University of South Dakota Coyotes.

Faculty & Staff Honors
MATT MCMERTY-BRUMMER BSM’s Parents’ Choice Award
Matt integrates social justice and service into the academic experience, teaching students how to live a life of faith. He takes an active and genuine interest in the students, encouraging them to reach high and challenge themselves. He encourages students’ ability for continuous growth, noting that they have not mastered something - yet. Parents are grateful for his continued support, guidance, patience and care on their children’s journeys at BSM.
PATRICE CARLSON ‘78
Staff of the Year
Patrice Carlson is described as a trusted confidant. Her contributions to BSM are too many to list and we are grateful for the difference she has made in the lives of students, faculty and staff. It is hard to register how much Patrice means to BSM. She fills us up with a sense of calm (and food) with her presence every day, especially the day before Christmas break. If you have a question or need something, just ask her – she likely can help. She will be retiring from BSM this year, and we will miss her witty and funny emails to all faculty and staff, and her ability to know the answer to every question ever asked of her. We cannot accurately express our deep gratitude for everything that Mrs. Patrice Carlson has done for everyone at BSM over all of these years. Thank you, Patrice!

JEFF COHEN Apple Polisher Award
Mr. Cohen demonstrates an outstanding passion for teaching his classroom material. This excitement can be seen in his distinctive classroom decorations and his commitment to the education of his students. With an update in the curriculum this year, he had to face the challenge of teaching a wide range of grades in his classes. Nonetheless, Mr. Cohen went above and beyond to prepare his students for success, holding in-depth reviews, study sessions, and a breakfast movie-watching club outside of school. With his extensive travel experience of the places he teaches, it is
evident that teaching history is truly his passion. Mr. Cohen puts extraordinary effort into his lectures and ensures that all students can learn, constantly stating, “If you don’t get this topic, please come see me.” This enthusiasm, combined with his unique personality, made his class a highlight of his students’ day, even if it was their eighth hour.
JAKE MAHLER ‘03 Faculty of the Year
The spotlight is on Mr. Jake Mahler, an interesting combination of Willy Wonka, Harry Potter and Pythagoras who makes magical things happen wherever he might be. In his classroom and beyond, he is a safe space for students. They know that they can trust him, not only for his expertise but for his empathy, his emotional intelligence, and his ability to connect with everyone. He sees the whole person, not just the student, and he helps them see themselves in a new light, empowering them to believe in their own abilities. He has a gift for recognizing the sparks in students and he gently nurtures their talents making them feel seen, heard, and believed in. He is an incredibly intelligent, persistent problem solver and collaborator. There are parallels with his ability to creatively guide students through the highest levels of AP math AND the creative vision that he brings leading a theater production. Thank you, Jake!

BSM’s Program EPIC

The EPIC program provides real-world experiences for students through internships, job shadows, and professional events.
EPIC started just a few years ago and has grown quickly. This year we worked with 46 partners to give over 250 students a chance to explore their passions.
Here are a few of the partners and experiences in which Red Knights had the opportunity to engage with the world
COLLE MCVOY AND GWOOP
For this mini-internship, BSM partnered with an award winning advertising agency and a tech start up to explore the world of marketing. Over the course of four months, thirteen students got a deep dive into the world of marketing, including social media strategies, the role of influencers, and cross promotion. They interviewed some of Colle McVoy’s real clients and divided into three “teams” to brainstorm strategies for these clients to promote each other’s brands. The experience culminated in a live pitch to the clients. Some of their ideas will be implemented in the months ahead.

VIKINGS
When BSM alum Kathleen Coyle ‘03 approached us about offering an internship with the Minnesota Vikings, we were all in. Ten students began their journey learning about the fan personas the Vikings use to diversify their events and engage with more people.
They attended the draft party where their assignment was to analyze the fan experience based on these personas and report back to the organization. This internship will continue through next season as the students will have multiple engagements with Vikings professionals and maybe even get to a game or two.

MILLER DUNWIDDIE AND DAMON FARBER
Calling all designers. In this mini-internship, students met with architects, interior designers, and landscape architects to learn about the design process and creativity that goes into building the environments we live in. After learning some basics about architecture, students had the opportunity to design and pitch the next phase of the BSM campus. Students received a tour of the University of Minnesota design school and met with professors and students in the studio. The experience culminated with a walking tour of downtown Minneapolis with BSM alum Tom Whitlock ‘86. As a landscape architect, Tom gave them insights into the blending of the natural and built environments and how we can thoughtfully honor people’s culture through our design choices.
This mini-internship was initiated by a student request, and we are so glad they did. The twelve students were treated to dozens of hands-on experiences with police, fire, and paramedics including intubating a patient, administering chest compressions, controlling the fire truck ladder, cutting open a car with the jaws of life, administering a sobriety test, and many more. The internship culminated with a simulated traffic accident where the students had to play the roles of police, fire, and paramedics to sort out the situation and take care of

CARES
Students act as police, firefighters, and paramedics at a simulated accident scene.
The CARES program is for those students who are interested in the “caring” fields. Each cohort of students is recruited during their junior year and stay with the program through their senior year. The 25 students in the senior cohort explored fields such as social work, psychology, special education, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy and more. They met with professionals from a variety of fields, volunteered at organizations supporting vulnerable populations, and attended professional conferences. Many of the students have communicated that they are inspired by these experiences to have a component of caring for others in their future careers.
SOAR ENTREPRENEURSHIP TOUR
BSM alum Ashley Hawks ‘03 is an entrepreneur who runs SOAR Leadership Groups, bringing together entrepreneurs and business leaders to accelerate growth and positively impact their communities. BSM partnered with Ashley this year to give nine lucky students a chance to meet with business founders at their offices and gain insights into starting and building a business from the ground up. Over the course of three months, students heard first hand about the passion and grit it took to build businesses including a media company, a consulting firm, a custom wood products company, a bridal business, and more.
