PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Dear Red Knight Families and Friends:
Regularly, a person could walk through the halls of Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the late afternoon and run across a heated ping-pong match in the cafeteria, a student-led debate in a classroom, others testing small-scale drones in the Atrium, or a small group of musicians attempting to master their craft. What they are seeing is the illustration of one of the core pillars of a BSM education, each intentionally constructed for our students in line with our mission to “lead lives of faith, achieve academic excellence, and contribute meaningfully to a global society.” The value of co-curricular clubs and activities runs deep but also holds real influence in many of our Red Knights’ lives well after graduation.
How can clubs and activities be a pillar to a highly regarded Benilde-St. Margaret’s education? Standard pursuits of excellence on academic and athletic fronts have long been a part of our culture. Student clubs and activities have their own magic. The unbeatable breadth of offerings allows students with unique and vastly variable interests to connect on a social level in meaningful ways. Learning at its peak is a social affair, and Red Knight clubs and activities provide the pathway. Along that path of development, our students continue to shape their identity around interests and in many cases, discovered passions. The lessons associated with exploration, discovery, and improvement as a part of the Red Knight Volunteer Corps, or any other club, provide the perfect supplement to the academic, religious, and athletic elements of our holistic education.
Over the years, it has become evident that the influence of BSM’s clubs and activities carries on in different ways well beyond graduation. Among our alumni, strong personal connections remain that were forged in high school on lakes across Minnesota as a part of the Fishing Club. Red Knight alumni have taken on sailing at locations across the world, rooted in their initial experiences with the Sailing Club. Some have even expanded their high school mock trial experiences, their first explorations, into distinguished legal careers. One can simply flip through any edition of Crown & Shield and see the stories and milestones of our alumni that demonstrate these very points.
The BSM crest:
Veritas: Truth
Pietas: Holiness, Dutiful Conduct
Scientia: Knowledge
Crown: St. Margaret's
Knight: Benilde, 3 Benedictine Crosses
The Crown & Shield is published by the Benilde-St. Margaret's (BSM) marketing department for graduates, students, families, and friends of BSM. Please send news and photos (at least 1 mb in size) to alumni@BSMschool.org.
Delivery Notice
As part of our continuing efforts to reduce waste, we have limited the delivery of the Crown & Shield to one per household. If you hear that we have inadvertently left someone off the list, please contact us at alumni@BSMschool.org.
Make no mistake, Benilde-St. Margaret’s commitment to clubs and activities is a critical part of this wonderful education and has a beautiful influence on our students. As Easter approaches, wishing you and your families a glorious and blessed spring.

BSM Boundless
Where Learning Has No Limits
By: Megan Peterson, Director of Marketing and Communications
From tying flies in hopes of hooking a big one, to not only flying – but building drones from the ground up, to giving back to the community in big ways, there is no limit to what students can do at Benilde-St. Margaret's.
With more than 70 co-curricular opportunities currently offered to 7-12 graders, Red Knights are exploring and discovering passions they never knew they had – or even existed
The newest addition to BSM’s lineup of opportunities with which to get involved, the BSM Drone Racing Team, has taken
off since the club formed this fall. As part of the club, students are learning how to build micro drones as well as network drone controllers. Red Knights are also using simulation software to practice flying the drones before taking their creations to the skies.
“Drones are becoming an integral part of our world, so finding ways for students to engage and pilot drones as part of their journey at BSM is a great way to also engage in authentic, real-world experiences,” said Drone Team Advisor and Engineering Instructor Anne Dougherty.

“Drones are already being used for disaster and recovery relief, which has helped save lives around the world. Imagine the impact our students will make in the years to come,” she added.
Dougherty said 24 students signed up immediately after catching wind of the club – prompting Dougherty and another Drone Club Advisor Mr. Joe Creer to split the students into three different teams. One of those teams includes the only all-girls team in the entire league.
Another organization that has garnered ongoing student interest at BSM is also one of our longest-standing – the Red Knight Volunteer Corps (RKVC). For more than 20 years, students have been making a difference in the lives of others thanks to the volunteer opportunities RKVC provides Red Knights.
From making posters to promote National Catholic Schools Week, to helping middle schoolers develop critical thinking skills, to serving meals at local homeless shelters, RKVC members are doing lifechanging work.
Senior Sarah Corneliuson, who has been part of RKVC since she was a sophomore, says being involved helps students look beyond themselves, and beyond high school.
“RKVC has helped students like me realize a passion they have for volunteer service which has inspired me to want to continue that work after leaving BSM,” she said.
In addition to the many opportunities students have to make a difference in the community, BSM also provides Red Knights the chance to start preparing for the professional world.
BSM’s new professional learning program, EPIC, which stands for Explore. Partner. Inspire. Create., is giving students the chance to partner with experts in various fields, explore
a variety of career paths, and participate in internships at BSM and outside the school’s walls.
Through the EPIC initiative, junior Malik Jaiteh is gaining professional videography experience while interning with the Twin Cities Film Festival.
As part of his internship, Malik is in charge
Spring 2020 | 3
of gathering and editing daily video montages highlighting the days’ activities, among other video projects.
“As a result of interning, I’ve learned how to use new editing software that’s more prevalent in film, I’ve learned more technical rules related to handling cameras and recording video, and I’ve learned a lot about the process of filming
red carpet events,” Malik said. “I’m just very grateful to have had the opportunity to be surrounded by likeminded people that have the desire to help younger videographers. One thing I’m especially glad to have learned is the importance of networking in the film industry. While interning, I had the chance to form great relationships.”
In addition to giving back to the community and getting a leg up professionally, BSM also recognizes the importance of giving students the chance to make new friends and simply have fun
BSM’s Ping Pong Club is one of dozens of after school clubs giving students the opportunity to do just that.
William Valley, a senior at BSM, has been part of the club all four years of high school.
“I joined the Ping Pong Club because I always enjoyed playing. I had a table at my house, and I used to play most days with my family or friends. When I saw that it was a
club freshman year, I knew I had to try it out, and I have loved it ever since,” he shared.
Since the club’s inaugural season in 20082009, around 70-100 students sign up to play each year. Of that, about 20 athletes play competitively against other schools.
“My favorite part of being on the team is having fun with my teammates. Although it is a relatively competitive club, I try to have as much fun as I can, and the other members of the team share that attitude,” William added.
Medical Club, Jazz Band, Knitting Club, Trout Club – not to mention the dozens of Red Knight athletics and MSHSL-sponsored activities, the opportunities to get involved, explore new hobbies and interests, and try new things are boundless at BSM.
Ongoing encouragement from passionate educators around students starting up new clubs daily contributes to the amazing community that is Benilde-St. Margaret’s.
The ability to explore, build lifelong connections, and oftentimes discover one’s calling is something that makes BSM one a kind – a place where learning truly has no limits

Students Hooked on Learning
Thanks to Trout in the Classroom Experience
Imagine fly fishing and trout at BSM all winter long. Ms. Lauren Reuss’s 8thgrade science class is enjoying Trout In the Classroom, a program sponsored by Minnesota Trout Unlimited.
The environmental education program provides trout eggs, which students raise in classroom tanks. Students monitor water quality, study stream habitat, form an appreciation for water resources, foster a conservation ethic, and learn about ecosystems. The program culminates in releasing the trout in a state-approved stream or river — the Vermillion River last year.
Reuss learned about the program during student teaching. “I worked in limnology labs, and as an intern for the DNR, so I had an interest in the program from the start. I knew I wanted to participate in my classroom when the time was right.” Year one was such a success; students wanted even more.
So Greg Hoemke, junior high English teacher and an avid fly fisherman, joined the program. “I saw it as a way to help promote fly fishing and to draw young people to the sport, as well as give them something fun to do after school.” He started tying flies after school with anyone who was interested, and the Trout Club was hatched.
Typically about five students join each Trout Club session. Evan Griggs, who runs the Trout in the Classroom program for Minnesota Trout Unlimited, joins Hoemke and the students once a month. In their first session together, they tied a Pink Squirrel fly.
Hoemke and Reuss intend to offer a trout fishing and fly fishing experience in conjunction with Trout Unlimited. “We want to get them out in the river fishing for smallmouth,” Hoemke said.
“The program gives us context for some of the science curriculum we cover,” Reuss explained. The hands-on experience brings a greater understanding of biogeochemical cycling (nitrogen cycle, water cycle, etc.), which students learn about through the lens of the program. “Students learn various nitrogen-based compounds as we collect water quality data daily. In the spring, we study water quality, which we take to another level when we apply it to our trout tank. Students learn that trout require specific water conditions to thrive,” she added. What Reuss loves most about the program is seeing how excited the students are about the fish. Each day before class, they study the tank and inquire about the fish. Student Audrey Taylor even named each of the 300+ trout!
“I think it makes some students feel more connected to nature,” Reuss said. Connecting students’ interests to God’s creation and our responsibility as stewards of His gifts is inspiring.

Mahler Encore! BSM Calls for a
By Eden Garman, Marketing & Communications Specialist
It’s a tale as old as time. A shy student enters the junior high unsure of their place and how to make friends. Insert a passion; foster that passion, and boom, a fire is ignited and soon everyone is watching them shine! Jake Mahler ’03 found his place and passion on the stage at Benilde-St. Margaret’s after auditioning for the junior high production How to Eat Like a Child in 7th grade. Mahler reflects on his role in that show: “I sang a solo number about how my birthday is coming up and I'm excited. And then I got sad when I had to wait another year before it came back. I'm sure it was Tony-worthy…” Mahler’s theater resume continued to build after his BSM stage debut, as did his theater family, both figuratively and literally.
Mahler grew up in a family of performers, hoping to follow in his older brother's and sister’s footsteps: Mike Mahler ’00 and Laura Mahler ’02 , both talented performers with whom Jake shared the stage on occasion. The three sang in choir together at BSM and were all cast in West Side Story in 2000. The youngest brother, Zach Mahler ’09, continued the theater tradition, starring in BSM productions such as Beauty and the Beast during his time as a student. Theater was a whole family affair for the Mahlers!
One especially exciting theater moment for Jake was when he was cast as Joseph in the inaugural production in the James Hamburge Theater: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. According to Jake, Joseph was really fun because the junior high and senior high

were all involved, “It felt like a huge production and by then, I had developed some really great friendships and friends who were all doing the show” including his own sister, Laura Mahler, who played one of Joseph’s brothers! Mahler made his mark at BSM and truly excelled during his undergrad at St. Olaf College where he double majored in theater and math and at Purdue where he earned his MFA. Great opportunities were presented to him that allowed him to travel to Virginia, Illinois, and California which ultimately led him to be the perfect candidate for the Artistic Director at BSM.
“I felt like I was very well prepared academically for life beyond BSM. Before BSM, I was very shy and not confident about myself at all. I struggled to make friends. Part of my BSM experience was developing that skill. Going into college and grad school I found myself making connections much faster. BSM also encouraged me to explore multiple passions which is how I have ended up back here teaching math and running the drama department,” Jake said.
BSM is thrilled to have a Mahler back behind the magic of the BSM drama department. Marilee Mahler, Jake’s
mother, has directed a fair share of productions at BSM in the past decade.
Jake stated, “It’s fun to feel like I am taking over my mother’s legacy while also doing my own thing.” Mahler has great plans in store for the BSM drama department. He is looking forward to making connections with kids through teaching 7th9th grade math, a subject that provides structure and rules, and then introducing and guiding students to tap into their creative side through theater productions.
Jake Mahler is happy to be back at BSM closer to family, many who are still involved in various aspects of theater. Laura Mahler even choreographed for the senior high production of Peter and the Starcatcher this fall; Mike Mahler is living in Chicago currently working on many exciting projects including a musical version of A Night at the Museum for Broadway with Alan Menken; and Zach Mahler lives in New York happily working as a facilities manager, though theater is never too far away. The family is very excited that Jake is back at BSM doing what he loves. Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight!
With his return to BSM, Jake Mahler has a vision for where he wishes to steer the program. Mahler reminisces of his experience with BSM theater: “There were literally a hundred people in the cast, and I would love to make it possible
for more people to be involved. You had people in baseball or football; the majority of the dance team auditioned for the spring musical. I want students to test talents that they might otherwise be ashamed to do and be celebrated for their creative side of self.” Another new implementation Jake is overseeing is free tickets for BSM students to view a show, hopefully serving as an incentive for more Red Knights to experience theater.
Currently, Jake is directing the senior high production of Freaky Friday which runs April 30 – May 3 in the Hamburge Theater.
Please join us in giving Jake Mahler a warm welcome back. The future of BSM Theater looks bright, so bright as to ignite a passion for performing in many future Red Knights!

Red Knight Leadership Award
Archie Black and Jane McDonald Black
Since the mid-2000s, Archie and Jane Black have been fixtures at BSM as highly involved parents of four boys, Patrick '10, Alex '13, Michael '15, and Ian '18. The Black's commitment to our school has continued even after their boys graduated.
Jane served as president of the Parent Association, leading initiatives to build community and financial support for school projects. She also has been an incredibly thoughtful and knowledgeable member of the Advancement Committee, thoroughly engaged in the current Imagine. Innovate. Inspire. capital campaign.
Archie accepted an appointment to the BSM Board of Directors in 2011, becoming chair, and completing his service in 2017. During his time, the board focused on significant curricular changes and major facilities improvements. Archie was critical in helping the board move forward with the capital campaign and construction of three new state-of-the-art science labs, the Atrium, and a focus on family tuition assistance.
Perry and Anne Schmidt
Selfless people who are always looking to "do the right thing," Archie and Jane have contributed to many improvements. They've supported tuition assistance programs, athletic field redesign, classroom renovations, professional development for educators, engineering program support, new facilities, and BSM becoming the outright owner of the property. For the past 15 years, BSM has flourished with their dedicated commitment. The Blacks genuinely embody all that the Red Knight Leadership Award means.
Parents often get pulled into Benilde-St. Margaret's gradually, generally connecting to the experiences of their sons or daughters. For Perry and Anne Schmidt, that experience began 17 years ago with their daughter Megan '09. As three younger siblings, Ellen '11, Emily '15, and Michael '19 became Red Knights, this school became a second home for the Schmidt family.
Benilde-St. Margaret's School is grounded in the idea of community. We thrive when members of the community play significant roles in solving problems or charting a path into the future. Anne and Perry have stepped up whenever asked and pushed Benilde-St. Margaret's forward to improve experiences for our students.
They opened their home countless times to scores of BSM students and parents throughout the years, both formally and informally. Behind the scenes, Anne was involved in project after project, making sure BSM families had memorable experiences. The Schmidt family also has been a vital partner in providing tuition assistance for Red Knight families year after year. Over time, they led efforts to improve all outdoor athletic facilities and have provided critical support to update academic facilities, curricular programs, and teacher development.
The Schmidt family has had a "how can I help?" attitude since their first days at BSM. And even though Michael graduated last year, they remain strongly committed to the school.

Mark Weisenburger
Some people enjoy a baseball game from time to time — a nice day outdoors and a piece of American culture. Others really like baseball. They try to catch every Twins game in person, on TV, or through the AM dial. Then there are those who LIVE baseball. It's always on their mind and in their blood. For them, baseball statistics are a native language. Marc Weisenburger LIVES baseball, and it's that love that has supported BSM baseball since the 1990s.
Marc's three children, TJ '99, Kara '03, and Adam '07, were all highly involved in Red Knight activities, which meant Marc was always at BSM. He was a fixture around the
baseball program, helping maintain the field, training the players, and of course, providing well-respected advice.
Even after Adam graduated, Marc stayed close to the baseball program. He was a critical leader in making major investments in the baseball facility, focusing on lights, and the scoreboard. Since 1998, Marc also has supported efforts focused on family tuition assistance and academic programming.
It is rare to see a single individual have such an impact on a specific program at BSM, over such a long time. Marc's commitment to the school and the baseball program has been extraordinary.
Distinguished Alumni Award
Nancy Wiser '85
Benilde-St. Margaret's Class of 1985 graduate Nancy Wiser was a cheerleader, peer minister, and member of the track team. Her team spirit shone brightest on the soccer field, where Nancy led the Red Knights as captain and a leading scorer. She secured a Division I soccer scholarship and earned a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from Providence College (RI).
After college, she launched her career in investment management, starting out as a fund accountant. She moved through many roles and took courageous steps to ultimately serve as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Compliance Officer at two hedge fund companies.
In 2011, Nancy joined Wells Fargo as executive vice president and global head of Asset Management Operations. Living in Boston, she serves as treasurer
of the Wells Fargo Funds, chairman of the board for Wells Fargo Asset Management’s UK - and Luxembourg-based firms, as well as chairman of the Luxembourg family of funds. Nancy also serves on the Business Advisory Council at Providence College School of Business, is a former Board of Overseers at Providence College, and former advisory board member for the National Black MBA Association's Boston Chapter. In 2014, Nancy received a Visionary Leader award from a well-known financial industry organization.
Nancy Wiser believes her BSM experience laid the groundwork for a successful career in the investment industry. She is driven to achieve excellence and make a difference. Her gratitude is her motivation for establishing The Wiser Fund, which helps open doors to a full BSM experience for Red Knights. Nancy is regarded as one of the financial industry's very best and is a wonderful role model for aspiring students.
Kelly Cheeseman '95
Kelly Cheeseman was a varsity hockey and baseball player with the Class of 1995 at BSM. He was a hard worker, a good student, and a player who always did the right thing — attributes that earned him the Hobey Baker Character Award as a high school senior.
After graduation, Kelly attended Seton Hall but transferred a year later to Northwood University in Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing management with minors in advertising and management information systems.
Cheeseman's love of hockey stayed with him, and today he is the Chief Operating Officer for the Los Angeles Kings and AEG Sports, which oversees multiple sports teams and events. At AEG, Cheeseman has been integral to the success of numerous high profile LA
events including championship boxing, tennis, lacrosse, soccer, cycling, track and field, three MLS Cups, as well as two Stanley Cup Championships, an NHL All-Star Game, NHL Draft, NHL Premier in Europe, and an outdoor hockey game at Dodger Stadium.
Before joining the Kings and AEG, Cheeseman worked for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (California League) as a marketing manager with a focus on marketing and ticket sales. In short, he didn't start at the top. He worked hard to get there.
Kelly's strong work ethic, humble nature, and generosity have helped countless BSM community members along the way—including supporting Jack Jablonski '14 and his work with the LA Kings. His faith, integrity, and character are part of his DNA. As Ken Pauly states, "As Kelly's former coach, I am so proud of his successes and all that he has accomplished."

Volunteer Service Award
Pete and Liz Birkeland
Pete and Liz Birkeland have been active volunteers throughout their sons' Red Knight careers, Andrew '14 and Nels '20, spanning 12 years.
They managed the "back end" of the annual auction/gala for several years and directed a team that closed up, packed up, and prepared for efficient distribution of all of the purchases—no small task. And the prosperous Knightsbridge shopping boutique glistened with Liz's touch for five years. Of course, while she was redecorating the gym for Knightsbridge, Pete was planning his basketball team's strategy for once the gym was cleared. Pete's patience, guidance, and
love of basketball were perfect for his time as coach of the 7th grade boys.
This year, the Birkelands graduated from loyal Red Knight fans to captains’ parents times two. Many know what responsibilities and work that brings. They have volunteered at open houses, too. Plus, Liz assumed duties in the Spirit Shop, that were the perfect match for an organized, hard-working accountant; she has been a constant contributor on Fridays. Finally, the Birkelands closed out the school year as chairs of the Senior Party.
Pete and Liz have given generously of their time and freely share their appreciation for BSM's wonderful community. They have been awesome parent volunteers.
Theresa Graham Deterding '81
Theresa Graham Deterding '81 didn't become a Red Knight until her sophomore year, but she has more than made up for that one missing year by supporting the careers of her four children, Connor '15, Mason '16, Samantha '18, and Charlie '20.
Although she had many specific volunteer tasks, Theresa has definitely been a utility player in the parent volunteer pool. Whatever, whenever, and wherever there was a need, Theresa was present to help. She could set up, clean up, stuff envelopes, and roll t-shirts. From the smallest task to the biggest responsibility, all that was needed was a call.
In the early years of the Deterding children's arrival at BSM, Theresa was on an admissions committee that provided great alumni and
Twenty-Year Club INDUCTEES
parent insight into the admissions process.
Theresa played a big role in the Spirit Shop. In addition to her regular Thursday duties, she was in charge of team apparel. That presented some challenging issues, but Theresa became a regular in the athletics office, and with guidance from the athletics department, the teams were on brand and looking sharp.
Knight School and the Parent Ambassador program also appreciated Theresa's skills and dedication. Her insight as an alumna was valuable to new families. And when asked to share her story at the annual auction/gala, it garnered strong support for the fund-a-need portion of the event.
Kind, caring, non-judgmental, generous, and genuine, Theresa is a model volunteer, a loyal fan, and dedicated Red Knight.

Maureen Segner
When daughter Katie '14 was a 7th grader, Maureen Segner joined the Junior High Activities Committee, and the next year, she was directing the efforts of that group before becoming hospitality chair on the Parent Association Board. For Maureen, these social events were the perfect fit for her welcoming and outgoing personality.
The annual Father-Daughter Dinner Dance is a longstanding annual tradition at BSM, and for two years, Maureen directed that event. Keeping with the dance theme, Maureen was heavily involved in the activities of the Knightettes for 12 years. That meant costumes, pre-parties, post-parties, competitions, celebrations, workshops, gifts, treat bags, and more! Katie and
Molly '19 were both dance team captains, and Maureen was with the girls and parents every step of the way.
In the middle of all of this, son Colin '17 provided a party and dance reprieve. Soccer and basketball kept Maureen busy, particularly as a soccer captain's mom.
Tuesdays you'd find Maureen in the Spirit Shop, and she joined a few other Tuesday friends to coordinate unique great gatherings for the annual auction/gala.
Maureen made all of her planning, decorating, and hosting look easy - one of her many gifts. None of it happened without hours of planning, dedication, and true Red Knight Spirit—helping many celebrate and be happy.
Frank
and Jane Steck
Frank and Jane Steck always appear cool, calm, and collected, even through all of their volunteer efforts. Many people mention that Jane was the first person they met at BSM. Her welcoming demeanor, genuine warmth, and sweet smile put newcomers at ease as they began their new journey. Both Jane and Frank were part of the original BSM Admissions Ambassador program and both have made countless calls to welcome new families.
In that same welcoming spirit, the Stecks were consistent greeters and tour guides at open houses. Frank was one of the first dads to volunteer to be a Parent Ambassador and open house tour guide.
Jane had many roles in the Parent Association, beginning with Faith and
Wellness. It fit her personality and healthy approach to life perfectly. Next came Student and Faculty Recognition – another perfect fit. Never one to seek the limelight, Jane thoroughly enjoyed her chance to recognize the good work of others. The Stecks regularly continue to express their appreciation to the faculty and staff.
On the lighter side, but definitely no less work, Jane chaired the Father-Daughter Dinner Dance when Meaghan '19 was a sophomore. And, most recently, Jane served a two-year term as secretary on the Parent Association Board.
Throughout the careers of their son Riley '17 and daughter Meaghen, the Stecks have been beacons of faith, positive reinforcement, and unselfish generosity. Their love for and dedication to the BSM community are unmatched.

JEN ROUSHAR ROB EPLER MEGAN KERN ‘86
Benilde Alumnus Doug Burnikel ’65:
An Inspiration to BSM Bowlers
Doug Burnikel ’65 has scored twenty 300-games and seven 800+ series, and he has the rings to show for it.
It was a Friday night in 2014 when competitive bowler Doug Burnikel ’65 spotted a man wearing a Benilde-St. Margaret’s shirt at Texatonka Lanes. It was Jim Picard, then coach of the Red Knights Bowling Team. “He had coached that evening and was looking a little beleaguered when I approached,” Burnikel remembered. “I asked if he would like some help, and he accepted.” Burnikel has been coaching the BSM Bowling Team alongside teachers John Sabol and Max Johnson for the past six years.
As an assistant coach, Burnikel’s goals have always been to set a good example and to help kids become better bowlers.
“By mid-November every year, my goal is for every bowler to be better than they were on Labor Day,” he said, adding he believes he’s accomplished it so far.
“They all get to play. They won’t get better if you keep them on the bench, so
everyone gets equal playing time. And they never complain. They are a team,” Burnikel said. His coaching philosophy grew from his experience as a kid when he made the golf team; as the fifth man, he never got to play. He believes his bowlers need a better experience. If they all have the chance to play, they can all improve. And his coaching style works. This year, 15 bowlers came out and all found improvement. At the bowling team’s final conference meet, students experienced much success. Junior Sean Hilson was named First-team All-Conference for the season, and sophomore Daniel Porisch received the All Honors award. Plus, BSM finished second in the JV Conference Tournament.
“If I have learned anything from the kids, it’s a reminder of what it’s like to be a kid,” says Burnikel, who remains young in spirit. At the end of the season, as he sat in the gym at BSM’s All Saints Day Mass,
he reflected: “I know the kids are all here, and I know they see me. That means something to them and me.”
Bowling has been a considerable part of Burnikel’s life for more than 50 years — a sport he continues to love. Despite a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2018 that temporarily kept him off the lanes, he was back as soon as he was able, bowling along with the team. And today, he still bowls in two leagues. “I’m not as good as I used to be, and I accept that,” he said with a chuckle. “But, I’m still the best on my Monday morning team.” In fact, in January 2020, he bowled a 632-set, proving he’s still got it, and again setting an example for his BSM team.
Burkinel’s passion for bowling is an inspiration to everyone at BSM, especially the bowling team. Despite personal challenges, they’ve learned they always can make a positive impact on others.

Pursuing Passions in Christ’s Footsteps
By Steve Beddor, ‘78
Our faith calls upon us to follow in Christ’s footsteps, and when Jesus walked on water, it was more than just a lesson on faith for Joe Knapp ‘73. After graduating from Benilde High School, Joe Knapp became one of the best barefoot water skiers in the nation, and his extraordinary ability to remain a top barefooter for more than 40 years has become legendary.
Joe is the ninth of 13 children of the Knapp family from Excelsior, and the Knapp family has supported of BSM since the beginning. Joe’s father, Richard J. Knapp, co-chaired a fundraising committee for the construction of Benilde. With the exception of Claudia, the oldest who attended Visitation School, (her mother’s alma mater), all of the remaining 12 Knapp kids attended Benilde High School or St. Margaret’s Academy. There were many failed attempts to teach himself to barefoot during his Benilde years, but on June 6, 1976, at 9:30 p.m. on Lake Minnetonka, with his future wife Debbie driving the boat at some 40 miles per hour, Joe took courage — and held firm to the faith — that he could put his bare right foot on the water and then step off the safety of the slalom ski on his left foot
and not sink. So began a 40-plus-year barefooting career.
As Joe reflects, “To this day, there is an element of faith each time I foot, that my feet will stay on top of the water without sinking. What a blessing it is to feel that I am regularly experiencing a small miracle through a sport I love.”
In 1978, the very first Barefoot National Championship Tournament was held in Waco, Texas. Joe was there and had the honor of being the first competitor on the water. He won his first National Championship in 1987 and went on to win it again in 1991, 2003, 2005, 2011, 2015, and 2018. In the process, he set another record as he is the only person to have competed in each and every Barefoot Nationals every year since; that’s 42 in a row! His sister Liz Rosenberg ‘82 , the youngest of the Knapp children, jokes that “Joe won Nationals so often it got to the point at which if he came in second, we’d just assume he was under the weather that year.”
There is another tradition Joe has faithfully maintained for more than 40 years. He kicks off each New Year by barefooting on the Mississippi River - no matter how cold
it might be! Run a quick internet search for “Joe Knapp New Year” and the top result should be a 2020 Youtube video of Joe barefooting through a flotilla of ice on New Year’s morning.
After seeing that video, Joe’s brother Frank Knapp ‘74, number 10 of the 13 children, commented that “Joe continues to do what looks incredible, leaving us siblings feeling so proud to know that we share the same DNA...if only slightly.”
Over four decades, it is easy to imagine the hundreds of awards Joe has racked up. Perhaps assuming that his retirement from the sport is eminent, various sports associations have been recognizing him for his lifetime achievement. Notably, there is the Banana George Blair Barefooter of the Year Award in 2017 and his induction into the Hall of Fame for Minnesota Senior Sports Association in 2018.
I suspect that these lifetime recognition awards still might be a bit premature as Joe only turns 65 this year, and more importantly, he doesn’t sound ready to give it up: “God willing, my goal is to keep competing in every Nationals until the day I die!” Did I mention that his grandfather lived to the age of 102?!
