Thanks to generous donors there are exciting opportunities for applicants: Saint Katharine Drexel Scholarships are available annually as six $7,500 grants for upper school prospects from historically underrepresented groups pursuing a college preparatory education. The scholarship is in keeping with the mission of St. Katharine Drexel who founded two schools in Powhatan County for African American and Native American students. The religious order she founded opened Blessed Sacrament School at Belmead, which merged with Huguenot Academy to create the present-day BSH.

Lifeline 6 Knights’ Warrior Scholarships are available for children of active and retired military personnel.

Scholarships of $1,000 to $4,000 are available and renewable to qualifying students for each year of attendance at BSH. The Arabella Stuart Brower Memorial Scholarships are drawn from a permanent endowment which pays two annual full-tuition scholarships and includes books and uniforms. The scholarship was initiated in memory of Arabella Stuart Brower, BSH Class of 2016. Each need-based award is for a female Knight and is a 4-year scholarship, or until graduation.

Two $3,500 Spirit of a Knight Scholarships are awarded to one girl and one boy high school student who exemplify what it means to be a BSH Knight.

There are tuition reductions for families with multiple children enrolled and for Catholic students active in their church communities.

Stewards of the Earth & S.T.E.A.M. Students are actively involved in collecting recycling bins and caring for raised garden plots tended by hands-on learners. Young researchers monitor the school’s weather station and collaborate with the Virginia Cooperative Extension of Virginia Tech. These activities, among many PUIFST BSF JOUFHSBM UP JOJUJBUJWFT UIBU BSF ƌPVSJTIJOH PO BSH’s vibrant, fresh air campus.

Faculty member Ruth Frazier, PhD, initiated the Stewards of the Earth program in 2017. The program expanded to the lower school, involving our youngest students in recycling, garden plots, and a class rotation schedule that includes basic environmental science. Dual enrollment and A.P. science classes ensure that rigorous academic standards are met as students progress through available coursework.

Did you know that the A in our S.T.E.A.M. program stands for Agriculture? This unique take on a curriculum steeped in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics inspires faculty to incorporate our rural setting into a focused way to apply learning from many disciplines.

What are the next steps? When funding is available, BSH will add curricular materials and educational resources for classrooms and the library. We will install additional monitoring capability for student researchers. The S.T.E.A.M. classroom in the new Brower Center will be equipped with additional tools and technology. Gardens will be expanded and greenhouses will be installed to provide improved learning experiences on campus. A dream project is to create an outdoor classroom and contemplative garden UP PƊFS B QMBDF GPS TUVEFOUT UP MFBSO BOE BMMPX OBUVSF UP soothe anxieties and inspire growing faith.

School leaders are inspired and challenged by the words of Pope Francis, who made the following declarations in 2015:

“A Christian who doesn’t safeguard DSFBUJPO XIP EPFTOşU NBLF JU ƈPVSJTI is a Christian who isn’t concerned with God’s work, that work born of God’s love for us…Today we have to realize that a true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.”

What drives Ruth Frazier is her belief that as stewards we are compelled to teach our children the impact our actions have on our environment and equip them to make informed choices on how to best work toward a more sustainable life – physically and spiritually. “These are their environmentally formative years,” Ruth believes. “Now is the time for students to learn how to live in the environment and be part of it, to learn and practice mutual respect.” Combining challenging teaching with the practice of stewardship is one more important way BSH Knights put their faith in action as they strive to succeed in university and in life.

Imagine having the opportunity in school to develop an understanding of your own faith as a reliable life tool.

That is the vision that sparked an idea to create a new kind of learning space — a Theology Lab. The intention of this new classroom is to create a relaxed, organic setting where students are invited to explore and discuss big life questions, and to develop, sharpen, and put into practice their personal sense of faith. Classes taught in the new Theology Lab at the center of campus and attached to the chapel follow the Catholic Diocese of Richmond theology curriculum, but with a twist that brings lessons to life. Mr. Hamner explains, “This is like no class you’ve ever been in. This is where we hope our students will begin to practice faith-in-action to develop tools for successfully navigating our increasingly complex world.”

With relaxed and comfortable seating options, water features, plants, and listening stations, the new Theology Lab is set up with spaces that invite intimate group conversation, private meditation, or lively class discussion.

Religion teacher Dr. Cassie Braun explained that she is helping her students connect with and turn lessons into real-life strategies and practices. For example, the senior class opened the year with a discussion of this year’s theme, “Be Strong and Courageous.” The conversation led to students realizing and listing the many opportunities they have to be positive role models to younger students on campus through the school's Big Sib/Little Sib program.

With ideas from joining their Little Sibs for occasional lunches and sporting events to partnering up with them at Mass - the new school theme took shape in tangible, meaningful ways.

The addition of the new Theology Lab gives students a designated safe space to ask questions, make connections, BOE CVJME DPOƋEFODF JO UIFJS TFOTF PG GBJUI BT B SFMJBCMF resource and life skill.

Annual Fund

Let’s help ensure that our school keeps delivering a values-based and academically rich education that prepares our students for success in university and in life. Last school year, $318,509 was raised to support the Annual Fund. The Annual Fund total includes community contributions and the $150,000 match.

Knight’s Charge

-BTU ZFBS XBT UIF ƋOBM ZFBS PG PVS ,OJHIUşT $IBSHF Campaign, which raised funds to build the Upper School Art Center and the Brower Center. Other major projects were completed as well, including renovation of the Parker Gymnasium, the Anderson-Connelly Library, all classrooms, and a variety of exterior upgrades.

During the 2023/24 school year, donors contributed an amazing $2,141,119 in gifts and pledges to support the Knight’s Charge. Included in this total is The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation grant match of $300,000 and the funds you contributed to meet and make the match possible.

Grants from the Moses D. Nunnally, Jr Charitable Trust, the Herndon Foundation, and Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation are also included in our Knight’s Charge 23/24 total. Other restricted and unrestricted community gifts and pledges made to the campaign completed the multiyear Knight’s Charge.

Education Improvement Scholarships Tax Credits Program (EISTC) This method of giving allows BSH to expand scholarships BOE ƋOBODJBM BJE UP FMJHJCMF TUVEFOUT BOE QSPWJEFT exceptional state tax advantages to most donors. Donors gave $69,500 through the EISTC giving opportunity at BSH, expanding access to a wonderful education for more students. Athletics

Our BSH community includes businesses and individuals who support athletics. During the last school year, a total of $21,344 was given in gifts and sponsorships to undergird the JNQPSUBOU CFOFƋUT PG BUIMFUJD DPNQFUJUJPO BOE UFBNXPSL *U is exciting that many new sponsors have already joined us in this new school year!

Restricted Giving

BSH receives generous gifts restricted to particular projects over and above the other categories mentioned. In 2023/24 these restricted gifts included scholarships and special projects totalling $63,100.

Events

You participated in numerous events that promote BSH including the Tom Connelly Golf Tournament, A Knight at UIF +FƊFSTPO BOE UIF #FFG BOE .VTJD 'FTUJWBM 5IFTF FWFOUT through the generosity of sponsors and participants, raised $170,392 "U UIF DPODMVTJPO PG UIF ,OJHIU BU UIF +FƊFSTPO auction, donors raised their auction paddles to support the Annual Fund with generous gifts totaling $26,100.

In-Kind Throughout the school year, many individuals and businesses donate goods and/or services to BSH. This type of support is called In-Kind giving. A long-time music teacher and church musician, Debbie believes in the power of music to build community, and she celebrates the growing talents of her diverse students.

“Teaching at BSH doesn’t feel like a job – it’s our passion!” Ʊ +".&4 '3";*&3 1)%

Music, love, and the privilege of doing whatever she can for BSH – these are the themes music teacher Debbie Thompson shared when asked her reasons for giving to BSH. Though she taught for 34 years in public schools, Debbie says that BSH truly feels like her home. It runs in the family!

Her husband, Rob, and his sisters, Mary Ellen and Martha, graduated from predecessor school Huguenot Academy.

A long-time music teacher and church musician, Debbie believes in the power of music to build community, and she celebrates the growing talents of her diverse students.

She is thrilled to weave music of faith and patriotism into her lessons and musical programs and knows this is an important aspect of BSH’s impact.

8IFO BTLFE XIZ TIF TVQQPSUT #4) ƋOBODJBMMZ %FCCJF humbly answers that she just tries to help meet the need.

When she started teaching at BSH four years ago, Rob stepped up and purchased instruments needed to start the program. Truly thankful for her role at BSH, Debbie emphasizes that she doesn’t “have to” teach, she “gets to” teach. “I feel called by God to do what I do and that’s why I’m here! That’s why we help!” Her passion for music, students, and the school are clear.

“Teaching at BSH doesn’t feel like a job – it’s our passion!” declared James Frazier, PhD, who teaches Upper School Mathematics and Middle School Leadership. Ruth Frazier, PhD, Science Department Chair and leader of the Stewards of the Earth program, is enthusiastic about the future of the students they are able to teach. “I have faith in the future.

I believe in our students – they are really good. The BSH approach is working; I wouldn’t have stayed 24 years if I didn’t believe in what we’re doing.”

To the Fraziers, BSH is family. Both of their children are BSH alums who each earned doctoral degrees. Ruth’s mother even got involved, donating funds to build the science lab used by countless students.

The Fraziers appreciate a student body small enough to really know their students. Ruth now teaches the children of alumni she taught years ago. Both Fraziers laud the energy, knowledge, teamwork, and sense of community BNPOH GBDVMUZ TUBƊ TUVEFOUT BOE QBSFOUT 5IFZ BSF HSBUJƋFE UP LOPX UIBU #4) ,OJHIUT BSF HSPXJOH VQ UP CF strong students, critical thinkers, and most importantly, good people.

How hard was the transition? When a smiling Aubrey jumped in the car and declared, “Mom, I want to graduate from this school!” Marielle knew she and husband Jason’s prayers had quite literally been answered. Fast forward: Aubrey is a Junior, her sister, Maggie, is now in TFWFOUI HSBEF BOE .BSJFMMF JT JO IFS ƋGUI ZFBS PO UIF BSH faculty.

The deep sense of community and the faith-based values of BSH continue to remind Marielle and Jason that they made an excellent decision to send Aubrey, and the next year, Maggie, to BSH. Though they are not Catholic, they celebrate that BSH reinforces their family’s faith, and that their daughters are able to intertwine faith and learning.

Marielle, who previously taught in a public-school setting, IBT OFWFS GFMU NPSF TVQQPSUFE UIBO JO IFS SPMF BT B ƋSTU grade BSH teacher. “There is such a healthy, happy working relationship between teachers and parents here. And support for teachers feels very real,” she shared.

The Pool family has fallen in love with BSH. Marielle would never work anywhere else; she and her family are passionately committed to BSH. Thank you Marielle and your family, for all you do to continually build and strengthen BSH.

Robert Bass, ‘73 Robert Bass, OD, FAAO. Graduated early with the Class of 1973 but was with the class of 1974 for three years. He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1978 and received his Doctor of Optometry from Southern College of Optometry in 1982. Robert practiced in Manassas, VA, for 41 years, retiring in 2023. He has been married to Sheryl for 46 years and has two daughters, two sons-in-law, and three grandchildren. Robert resides mostly in Virginia Beach, but still maintains a home in .BOBTTBT BOE ƋTIFT XIFO IF DBO Thornton Cline, ‘73 Thornton is a highly successful composer and music teacher in the Nashville area. .

Scott Hinchman, ‘74 Scott and Melissa moved back to Virginia in 2021, after having left in 1983. Melissa told Scott many years ago she was moving home one day with or without him so he had plenty of time to prepare. They have three daughters, all of whom live in the Atlanta area. Their oldest is threatening to join them in the Charlottesville area one of these days.

Scott is still working, but enjoys planting native perennials and eradicating the invasive plants that have taken root on UIF QSPQFSUZ .FMJTTB XPSLT QBSU UJNF BU B MPDBM ƌPSJTU BOE TQFOET NPTU PG IFS GSFF UJNF XPSLJOH XJUI ƌPXFST XIFO she isn’t face-timing with their grandchildren.

Lonnie Joyce, ‘74 Lonnie and Kathy, his wife of 43 years, live in Eastern Powhatan. They each retired from Truist Mortgage in 2021 after 35 years of service. They have two sons, both graduates of BSH, and four grandchildren, two of whom currently attend BSH. You will see them often on the BSH campus or in the carpool line picking up their grandkids.

Randy and Linda Phillips, ‘74 Randy and Linda met in their senior year, and the prom was their second date. Linda became an RN and cared for her patients for 40 years. Randy enlisted in the Navy Seabees, CVJMEJOH NJMJUBSZ CBTFT JO UIF 1BDJƋD BOE *OEJBO 0DFBO islands. After the Navy, Randy returned to design and build homes in the area. Randy and Cindy have been married for over 46 years and have three beautiful daughters and seven amazing grandchildren. They live in Powhatan.

She and her husband Ed spend lots of time with their grown children Allison, Evan, and Margaret, and their four amazing grandchildren, ages one to nine, all who live in the Richmond area.

Don Weaver, ‘74 Donnie and Stella built a house in Powhatan and are enjoying life there. Randy Fralin, ‘76 This is turning out to be a big year of celebration for Randy!

They have three girls who are doing well and rocking it in Richmond. In December, Randy and “his girls” are looking forward to celebrating his 67th birthday at the Sphere in Vegas for the Eagles concert. Courtney Edwards, ’07 Courtney married Brian Evers in a beautiful ceremony on September 29, 2024. The couple was introduced through former BSH student Samantha Maxwell. Courtney currently lives in Maryland and works at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. ,BUF -FCPƊ Ş After graduating in 2017 with her Master’s Degree in Publishing, Kate launched her dream career path and began working in production and editorial at Cornell 6OJWFSTJUZ 1SFTT *O +VOF ,BUF QVCMJTIFE IFS ƋSTU book, a poetry collection/memoir called Kintsugi, which is partly dedicated to BSH’s own Mrs. Rogers-Unetic.

Along with her full-time job and freelance editing, Kate is currently querying her second poetry book for publication and working on three other books. With her partner Kyle, she just completed a number of hikes including The /BSSPXT JO ;JPO /BUJPOBM 1BSL 6UBI 5IJT /PWFNCFS they will venture to visit Paris, Budapest, and Prague for Kate’s 33rd birthday.
