It is heartening to know that our youth members observed International Day of Peace recently by way of awareness campaigns and Rallies. It is Bapuji who advocated Satyagraha and non-violence as the two weapons to express our emotions. If we control our emotions and treat everyone equal on this Earth, then peace can be established. Everyone has the right to live with the gifts granted by God and none can prevent it. Scouting and Guiding believed in this idea and that is the reason we are living under the canopy of World Brotherhood. It is Scouting alone all over the world that isworkingasaMessengerofPeace.

October 2nd is Gandhi Jayanthi, the birthday of Mohandas Karam Chand Gandhi who stood as a role model to unite everyone in the name of freedom for the country and inculcated patriotism in the heart of every citizen of Bharat. I appeal to every member of our youth movement to be involved in educating the community to promote cleanliness, serving the orphans in orphanages, creating awareness about nutritious food, conducting All Faith Prayer, encouraging the use of swadeshi garments and articles and conducting peace ralliesasandwhentimepermits.

As part of bringing unity in the country, in 1949 on September 14, Hindi was made the Official language of the country through a provision in our Indian Constitution. I am happy to learn that many of our states observedHindiDiwas.

I convey Dussehra Greetings to each one of you and let us pray the Supreme Power to give us global peace and globalhealth.

As September dawns upon us, it brings with it a trifecta of global significance – Teachers' Day, the G20 Summit and the International Day of Peace. Each of these observances symbolizes a unique facet of our world's progress, remindingus of thepivotal roles, theeducators playin shaping minds, the cooperative efforts needed on the international stageandtheyearningforglobalharmony.

On September 5th, nations around the world celebrate Teachers' Day, recognizing the invaluable contributions of educators to society. Teachers are not just purveyors of knowledge but architects of dreams, builders of character and the beacons of hope for countless students. They inspire, guide, and mould the leaders of tomorrow. In the face of challenges, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers demonstrated unwavering dedication by adapting to new teaching methods, often going beyond their job descriptions to support their students' well-being. As we honor teachers this September, let us acknowledge their resilience, compassion and unwavering commitment to nurturing the minds that will shape our future. In a world undergoing rapid transformations, educators continue to be the cornerstoneofprogress.

A virtual consultation was conducted with the members of Guidewing on their needs to make BSG a Agile organisation. The key motive is to gain a deep understanding of the distinct requirements of girls and the Lady unit leaders. Recognizing that girls across different age groups possess diverse developmental needs, interests and capabilities, we aim to create tailored approaches that cater to their individual growth journeys.

It's important that while we're embracing the diversity of needs among guides and girls, maintaining a unified vision, mission and organizational strategy remains paramount Sustaining regular communication, fostering collaboration and ensuring alignment between both the wings will ensure that we collectively bolster the organization's overarching objectives and contribute holistically to thecomprehensivedevelopmentofgirlsandyoungwomen.

International Day of Peace, observed on September 21st, is a day dedicatedtopromotingpeace, unity, andunderstandingworldwide. It serves as a reminder of the importance of peaceful coexistence, the need to resolve conflicts through dialogue, and the potential for individualsandcommunitiestobemessengersofpeace.

This year's theme, "Recovering Better for an Equitable and Sustainable World," highlights the need for solidarity and cooperation to overcome global challenges. In a world often divided by conflict and discord, the pursuit of peace remains a shared aspiration. It is a reminder that the absence of violence is not enough; true peace encompassessocialjustice, environmentalsustainability.

DR. K.K. KHANDELWAL, IAS (RETD.) Chief National Commissioner The Bharat Scouts and Guides

September is a month of national and international events like Teacher s Day, World Literacy Day, International Day of Peace and World Ozone Day. Reports of activities conducted by the states all over the country have been reaching the National Headquarters. I thank the leadership at all levels for guiding our youth and motivating them towards these activities. It is the opinion of the Founder of this Youth Movement that any young fellow who follows Promise and Law will be smart in academics. This is evidently seen in the youth who continue to be members of BSG. Even after getting jobs, our members continue to participate in the activities. Scouting and Guiding supplements education. I appeal to our scouts and guides to excel in academics and they should prove better than the students without scouting or guiding.

A number of workshops are conducted for the leaders at the state level in all the regions on Capacity Building. Let us implement the National Adult Resource Policy of which the Job Profile is a part. Leaders at the State and District levels should present the relevant job profile to the concerned office bearers so that they will be clear about theirfunctions.

Workshops on Climate Change are also being conducted to motivate the young generation towards reducing Climate Change. Leaders have to guide the young to understand the concept and suggest activities to reduce Climate Change. That will help humanity to live aneco-friendlylife.

I appeal to the State Associations to take Scouting and Guiding to colleges and Universities by conducting Beginners Courses to the teaching faculty and motivating them to open new units. The efforts made by all of us shouldreachalltheyouthofthecountrytofulfillourvision.

I wish each member of the Scout/Guide fraternity Happy DussehraandVijayadasami. WithScout/Guidegreetings,

HOW TO ENHANCE YOUR LISTENING SKILLS?

It is our experience that participants do not have the ability to sit for 45 minutes and listen attentivelyandactivelytowhatothersaresaying. Active listeners listen with their ears, eyes and mind. They observe and listen to the feelings and emotions as well as literal words so that the total meaning behind the speaker`s messagecanbegrasped. It was found by observation that we can be active listeners, if we follow the belowmentionedtechniques:

1. Be motivated: For this, listener should be willing to make the effort to listen, although it is hard work. Listener should make effort to hear and understand what the speaker is saying.

2. Make eye-contact: Making eye-contact with the speaker focusses our attention and avoid from distraction or diversion. It also encourages the speaker to perform well. Peoplejudgewhetherwearelisteningbylookingatoureyes.

3. Show interest: Through our body language such as nodding our heads and appropriate facial expressions such as smile, together with eye contact, the speaker isconveyedthatweareindeedlistening.

4. Avoid distracting actions: While listening, avoid looking at your watch, scratch the mobile, play with a pencil, looking at sides, scratching your head or sleep divert the attentionofthespeaker.

5. Empathy: Active listeners should develop the ability to understand and share the feelingsofthespeaker.Donotprojectourownneedsand intentionsontothespeaker becausewearelikelytohearwhatwewanttohear.

6. Ask questions: At the end of the speaker`s message, analyse what is heard and seen andaskquestionsrelatedtothetopic, forfurtherunderstandingandclarity.Itassures thespeakerthatwearelistening.

7. Do not interrupt: Let the speaker complete his message or sentences or thoughts, beforeresponding.

8. Donotover-talk: Thereisalwaysatendencyforustospeakourideasthantolistento what others (or the speaker) say. If we are talking more than the speaker is, chances are that we are not listening enough, because we cannot talk and listen at the same time.

9. Don`t pre-judge or draw a premature conclusion: We should be aware of our biases and avoid conclusion based on his or her gender, age, education, ethnic group, status etc. Use the information about the speaker to improve our understanding.

10. Be natural: Do not try to become a compulsive good listener. Do not exaggerate the facial expressions or overdo eye contact by broadening or closing your eyes. Closingtheeyestakethelistenertosleep.Developinglisteningtechniques.

11. Note-making: Noting down important points spelled out by the speaker brings you credibilityandhelpsintheretentionoftheinformation.

12. See the whole picture: Interpret your feelings and come to a conclusion, after understandingwhatthespeakerhassaid.

13. Listen without making judgments or taking a position on an issue. Gain an understandingofthesituationfromtheother’spointofview.

14. Keep an open mind and a positive attitude - even if you don’t agree with what is beingsaid.

To be active listeners is in our hands. We have to control our senses, create interest in the topic presented by the speaker and lastly, we should be patient to sit for some minutes. It is well said by our ancestors that we can be active listeners, if we practice yoga and meditation. For this reason, Scouting gives priority to the above two besides physical exercise and limited food. Hence let us prepare our future generations of youth to be active listeners.
