Carolyn, a rich blonde, buys a new automatic Jaguar XKR Sport.

She drives the car perfectly well during the day, but at night, the car just won't move at all.

After trying to drive the car at night for a week (but without any luck), she furiously calls the Jaguar dealers and they send out a technician to her.

The technician examines the car and finds nothing wrong with it.

So he turns to the blonde and asks: "Ma'am, are you sure you are using the right gears?"

Full of anger, the blonde replies: "You fool, you idiot, how on earth you could ask such a question?

I'm not stupid you know!

Of course I am using the right gears; I use D during the day and N at night."

Un nouveau mot du président à écrire.

De nouveau notre stand lors de l’Autojumble 2013 a été réélu meilleur stand de l’exposition et ce grâce aux idées et grâce au travail de beaucoup de membres et surtout de Marc Weyer!

Et cette année nous souhaiterons gagner la trophée « Ton Maathuis » pour la 3ième fois et la garder définitivement ! Alors au travail, nous avons toujours besoin de gens qui aident Marc.

Nos manifestations étaient cette année encore d’un grand succès et tous ceux qui n’ont pas pu participer à tous les événements du club, pourront, au fil de la lecture de cet « On the Road », voir ce qu’ils ont raté. Mais une maladie, la « Eschophobie » avait dû frapper divers de nos membres lors des British sports car days. C’étai t dommage, un très beau cadre, un bon hôtel, de la bonne bouffe, des routes superbes, bon ils y en avaient quelques unes qui étaient un peu poussiéreux et beaucoup de travail mais très peu de participants.

Comme chaque année, j’aimerais remercier tous les membres du comité et tous les membres qui nous aident à assurer le travail au sein du BSCOC. Plus de membres = plus de travail pour le comité ! Et nous sommes toujours en pleine expansion !

Malheureusement du à certaines indispositions des membres du comité, notre voyage en septembre avait du être annulé cette année, mais j’espère qu’en 2014 nous serons plusieurs à déguster cette sortie.

2014 ? Qu’est ce que cette année va-t-elle nous réserver ? Un gouvernement avec une coalition de trois parties !?! Et je viens juste de lire que le Ministère du transport va tomber dans les mains d’un très grand amateur de bicyclettes et de véhicules électriques, l’ultra vert M. François Bausch !!! Je n’ose même pas m’imaginer quelles conneries il pourrait lancer contre les véhicules classiques! Il faudra être vigilant !

THE ROVER P6 A rather personal view of this poor man’s Jaguar The Very First European Car of the Year!

Cutting edge when launched, the Rover P6 is still amazingly modern Winning the Car of the Year award is not necessarily an indication of how good a car really is – you only have to look at some of the past winners. The vehicle that took home the very first gong in 1964, however, thoroughly deserved it because it was a forward-thinking model that was safe, comfortable and great to drive. It was the Rover P6 – a car that was a revelation thanks to its clean-sheet design and thoroughly modern mechanicals. It set a new standard with regard to refinement, performance, handling, and safety – and even today the P6 is still fabulous to drive, especially in V8 form.

London, the P6 replaced the old P4 that had earned Rover its ‘Auntie’ nickname. The car was aimed at the young executive modern,

quality transport, and it was unofficially known as the P6 because it was Rover’s sixth postwar model put into production (P stands for a model in production). There were many reasons

for the

P6’s ultra-modern

image, not least of all its clean lines, unconventional construction, racingderived suspension design and allround disc brakes. The front suspension was designed so that a gas turbine engine could have been fitted in the front! But the power plants remained

conventional, with the original 1978cc OHC engine being bored out to 2204cc, both available with single (SC) or twin carburettors (TC), but not until after the fabulous Buick-derived 3528cc V8 had joined the party in 1968. This year (2013) marks the 50th anniversary of the production of the first P6. Launched as the Rover 2000 SC in 1963 (4 cylinders, a displacement of 2 litres with a single SU-carburettor), the car created the executive sports saloon sector, now populated by cars such as the BMW 3-series and Audi 4. The 3500 model of 1968 with the legendary 3.5-litre V8 engine coupled to an automatic transmission, and especially the 3500S of 1971 equipped with an uprated 4-speed manual gearbox (the one used on the 4-cylinder cars was not robust enough to match the V8’s torque), propelled performance into the Supercar territory of the day. Even by today's standard, the V8 models are fast cars.

The P6 was also the last Rover to be designed and developed by an independent Rover Company. It broke new ground in styling, safety and engineering that would lead the industry for the next decade. Power assisted disc brakes on all four wheels were fitted as standard to a radically new, independent suspension, designed specifically to cure rear end slide and facilitate the use of new-fangled radial ply tyres. The ride quality was amongst the best Britain produced, and engineered crumple zones and intelligent pioneering safety features put the P6 leagues ahead of the competition. Despite this, with all of the body panels bolted onto a separate 'base unit' , the cars are surprisingly easy to work on, and spares availability is excellent. Production continued until 1977 by which time a remarkable 327,000 cars had been produced. Of these, only around 4,000 survived in the UK today, with about half of them roadworthy.

My first car was simultaneously my first P6, a Rover 2000 SC manual from 1968 in British racing green with a tan leather interior, which I bought with some 40.000 km on the clock in 1972 with all my savings of that time. I drove her for five meaningful years, until the rust got to her. I also experienced a burned exhaust valve at around 100.000 km, but I never forgot that car, as driving her gave me a sincere 1:1 road feeling in any weather conditions and on any road surface, which only a Saab 99 could begin to rival later on, and which only non-power assisted steering can provide.

Now, having reached retirement, I was looking for a cheap car to use on a daily basis. After 9 months of intensive search I again purchased a Rover P6, but this time a Three Thousand Five (3500, V8, Series I) with automatic transmission to accommodate both my wife’s wish for an automatic gearbox and my desire to have a powerful engine. I did not want any power assisted steering, but – if available – the same colours as on my first P6. I was lucky! I got one in Arden green and Sandalwood leather trim with the

equipment

i.e.

adjustable front head restraints (a must), heated rear window (highly recommended when driving all year long), a boot mounted spare tyre (very practical), Rostyle alloy wheels (good looking) and a very rare manual sunroof (no soft top from Webasto!). I found this rare combination of equipment and feature as a second-hand car with only 93.000 km, “dans son jus”, via www.leboncoin.fr in Nice, France, owned by a Belgian, still working in his Monaco based premises at the age of 75. Built as an LHD export version for continental Europe in January 1970, the car was dispatched to the dealer/importer in Brussels, invoiced and first registered in Gent, Belgium, the day of my 18th birthday, March 4th 1970.

She was advertised as a well-running, rust free car, a good driver so to say. I bought her after several calls and email contacts via phone in early January 2013 without having seen her. I drove her home from Nice in one go in late April 2013, when the previous owner had finished repairing/renewing the front and rear brake lines, callipers and pistons (in stainless steel) as part of the deal. (The rear brakes are a nightmare to work on! You need to lower the axle to replace the brake pads.) Since then I have replaced the front brake discs, the four shock absorbers (by adjustable SPAX dampers with Krypton gas), and the four headlights to fit high output halogen bulbs, the water hoses, and the shabby fuel filter and pump. I dismantled, cleaned, serviced and tuned both SU-carburettors, as well as the ignition (new

contact points, leads and spark plugs). I mounted a hazard warning light flasher, a new rear fog light, automatic seat belts, two new outside mirrors, two new wipers, and a radio (with Bluetooth). She passed the “Agréation” and the MOT in Sandweiler/Luxembourg first time round (even the wipers, windscreen washer and horn worked properly). Afterwards she got a very deep polish. She looks stunning. Since then we have driven her for some enjoyable 4.000 km. She burns between 13 and 15 litres of gasoline per 100 km, consumes practically no oil (less than ¼ litre per 1.000 km), but she marks her territory as a British car should do. The annual costs to keep her on the road are some 200 euros for road tax (25,-), insurance (167,-), and the MOT every second year (27,-/2). I assume that she will keep the value of the total investment of some EUR 6.500 (for acquisition, import and spares) over time. In my eyes it is one of the lowest-priced and most rewarding V8’s you can buy and – above all – drive with in a very British car ambience today. Furthermore, the road holding and safety features exceed that of similar V8-powered US-cars by far!

‘Why buy a Rover P6?’ many BSCOC members were asking me during our gratifying after work runs (many thanks to Louis!) on which I took her this summer. Some could understand and approve (Louis, Thierry, Bob …), others not (Marc, Jean-Jacques …). By the time the Rover P6 first came out in autumn 1963 – as stated before – it was an astonishing new development with a lot of new solutions and features all far ahead of their time and totally unexpected from a British car manufacturer. Therefore she still drives and behaves so well in today’s traffic conditions: factually she is a light mid-sized sedan (Weight: 1.298 kg; Length: 4,57 m; Width: 1,68 m; Height: 1,42 m; Wheelbase: 2,61 m; Turning circle diameter: 9,60 m) with four individual, well contoured comfort seats , a big nearly square trunk (450 l), a tank capacity of 68 litres (which allows a fuel autonomy of nearly 500 km), a powerful engine and a smooth but surprisingly

responsive acceleration with enough torque to challenge modern diesel and/or turbo powered cars. The road holding is very comfortable and above all sincere, neutral and safe with predictable reactions under any conditions. The four discs – those at the rear being in-board to reduce un-sprung weight (as on the Jaguar independent rear suspensions built in E-types, S-types, and XJ6s) – give her a very efficient stopping performance. At the time, the P6 met the American crash tests with excellence, without having been especially developed for them (just as the Jaguar E-type did in the same convincing manner). With seat belt anchorages for all seats , headrest mountings and front seats designed to minimize the whiplash or “coup du lapin”, knee and leg protections by special dash pads, a quite simple but highly effective ventilation of the passenger compartment,

(Triplex), Sundym tinted glass all around, a well-protected, big fuel tank sitting behind the rear seats/bulkhead, above the rear axle and in front of the trunk, the passive safety of the P6 was and still is better than most contemporary cars of the 60s, 70s and even 80s. The Automobile Association of Great Britain awarded its Gold Medal to the Rover Company “for the high degree of inherent safety incorporated in the design and construction of the P6 car”. It was the first such medal to ever be awarded (1966).

By combining the sophisticated 2-litre P6 saloon with the allalloy 3.5-litre small-block V8 sourced from Buick (GM), Rover successfully created a sporting executive express quite unlike

anything else made in Britain at the time. The original P6 was an advanced design centred on a stressed steel skeleton with the outer panels and mechanicals bolted on. Bonnet and boot lid were made out of aluminium to save weight long before the first petrol crisis of the early 70’s occurred.

Front suspension (Scheme, LH)

An independent front axle and a DeDion back axle with coil springs all around give the new Rover 3500 (P6B) a superb ride (B stands for the Buick V8). The De-Dion set up is still unique in that the "tube" is in two parts that could telescope and rotate while lubricated by 1.2 litre of engine oil, thereby avoiding the need for sliding splines in the drive half-shafts, with consequent under drive or braking torque, while still keeping the wheels vertical and parallel in relation to the body. The front suspension design is also unusual, in that there are horizontal coil springs which are actuated by bell-crank levers, which transmit their loadings into the front bulkhead. Despite its eccentricity, the system is effective and durable. The P6’s worm and roller steering box is precise and predictable when set up well, but not as sharp as a rack-andpinion set-up (like on my Jaguar E-type). The steering column, gear box and tie rod are situated directly in front of the bulkhead, well protected high up behind the engine (to enhance the passive safety of the body shell; so that the engine bay, initially destined to host a gas turbine as power-unit, fortunately, was wide and deep enough to fit a 90° degree 3.5-litre V8 engine. This engine has twin SU carburettors, Lucas ignition (Saint Luc priez pour nous!) and developed 150bhp, good enough for a top speed of around 180 kmh. Initially available only with Borg Warner automatic transmission (at first the BW35, more responsive than the smoother BW65 box on later Series 2 models), a manual gearbox (4-speed) was offered from

1971 onwards, around the time the styling underwent a mild facelift with new grilles and bonnet bulges (= Series 2).

The construction of the P6 is quite unlike most other classics that you are likely to have worked

on.

The

nearest

comparison is the Citroen DS, as it also featured a monocoque onto which the unstressed panels were hung. With all the panels being bolted on (even including the roof), it’s easy enough to remove everything and view the stressed ‘skeleton’ in its naked state – although this isn’t something you can ask to do as part of your pre-purchase inspections! That’s a shame, because the monocoque can rot, especially in the centre section – although the P6 is far less rust-prone than most of its contemporaries.

The elegance of David Bache’s original design, which managed to endow the relatively compact

passenger

presence, is complemented by the wellequipped and leather trimmed

interior.

Once you entered the car you feel immediately at ease. The wide range of the sliding mechanism of the front seats and the continuously adaptable position of their backs combined to the tilt steering wheel allow drivers and passengers of all statures (up to 195 cm and 120 kg) to find an optimal seating position. Despite the sunroof the head space is remarkable. Furthermore you

always have the four corners of the car in your eyesight (the front ones even by night) that put you in confidence.

In my opinion, the Rover 3500 is an underrated classic saloon – built to a high standard, ideal to drive, but easy to work on (except the rear brakes!), with spares and expert help readily available.

The P6B also has the advantage of offering performance on par with most modern sedans.

MIT DEM ROTEN MG-B AUF DER GROßGLOCKNER HOCHALPENSTRAßE „ Zur Hebung des Fremdenverkehrs ist eine bilderreiche Hochstraße notwendig die technisch alle berühmten Alpenstraßen in den Schatten stellt. Maßgeblich für den Bau einer Großglocknerstraße wird nur der leistungsfähige internationale Fremdenverkehr jener reichen Leute aus dem weiten Auslande sein, welche ihre Reisen zur Gänze mit dem Kraftfahrzeug zurücklegen und imstande sind, viel Geld in Osterreich auszugeben.“ So befand 1922 eine Konferenz von Experten.

2013 sieht der Text folgende Auslegung. Der Fremdenverkehr ist vor Ort, hauptsächlich bei Kaiserwetter und an Wochenenden ist die Strecke überfüllt von Bummlern wie auch von Heizern. Jede Type von Auto- und Motorradfahrer ist vorhanden, und die vielen sportlichen Radsportler.

Ob die Leute wohl alle reich sind?

Sicher nicht, da eine Tageskarte von 33 Euro pro PKW die Strecke in jede Richtung erklimmbar macht, und für einen Zusatz von 10 Euro darf man auch noch einen weiteren Tag die Strecke erobern. Auch haben wir nicht zur Gänze die Strecke von Luxemburg nach Lofer, unserem Stellplatz am Camping Grubhof, 40 km vor dem Großglockner, zurückgelegt. Wie ein König in seiner Senfe, ließ sich unser 63er MG-B in unserem schicken Anhänger nach Osterreich transportieren.

Zur Geschichte der Strecke: 2 Jahre nach dieser Konferenz von Experten erhielt der Kärntner Ingenieur Franz Wallack den Auftrag eine „bilderreiche Hochstraße“ über das Hochtor zu trassieren. Durch den Börsenkrach von 1929 und die verheerende Wirtschaftskrise wurde die Straße als Arbeitsplatzbeschaffende Maßnahme in Angriff genommen. So wurde am 30.

August 1930 in Ferleiten der erste Sprengschuss gesetzt.

Einige Zahlen: In nur 5 Jahren ist das Bauwerk entstanden zu einem umgerechneten Preis von 85,1 Millionen Euro, mit sogar 660.000.- Euro weniger Kosten als vorgerechnet. Heuer ist diese Straße Osterreichs 2te touristische Hauptattraktion, vor ihr rangiert nur Schloss

Schönbrunn in Wien. Und bis zu ihrem 75. Geburtstag im Jahre 2010 waren 60 Millionen Besucher gezählt worden. Die Tourismusmagnetfunktion für die Region und den Naturpark Hohe Tauern ist somit bewiesen. Die Edelweißspitze ist mit 2571 Metern der höchste Punkt der Groß-glocknerstraße und die höchste Bergspitze welche mit dem Auto in Europa erreichbar ist. Das Hochtor, welches alle passieren müssen ist mit seinen 2504 Metern der höchste Punkt dieses Passes. Insgesamt hat die Strecke 48 Kilometer Fahrvergnügen. Die Fahrbahn misst mindestens 7,5 Meter Breite, um auch modernen Reisebussen gerecht zu werden. Die Radien der 36 Kehren sind jetzt auf mindestens 15 Metern. An den Ausflugsorten und Sehenswürdigkeiten stehen 4000 Parkplätze zur Verfügung. Geöffnet je nach Wetterlage von Anfang Mai bis Anfang November.

Historischer Nullpunkt der 48 Kilometer langen Durchzugsstrecke ist das Ortszentrum von Bruck. Direkt beim Gasthof Lukashansl an der Glocknerbrücke befindet sich der Kilometerstein 0. Ab hier signalisieren Granitsteine rechts am Straßenrand zumeist alle 200 Meter, wo man sich befindet. Besondere Sehenswürdigkeiten sowie sämtliche 36 Kehren im Straßenverlauf werden durch blaue Infotafeln markiert.

Wiesen die Straße, links kommt die Fuscher Ache entgegen. Fusch, der nächste Ort, hat vom Bau der Glocknerstraße

Einerseits ist er als Ausgangspunkt für die Panoramatour durch die Hohen Tauern besonders gefragt, zum anderen trägt er seither, wie auch Bruck, die zugkräftige Bezeichnung „an der Glocknerstraße“ im Namen.

Auch diese Straße wird nie fertig. Die Erhaltung einer Straße in außerordentlich exponiertem Hochgebirge

Temperaturunterschiede bis zu 80 Grad der Fahrbahn zu. Starkregen schwemmt Geröll auf die Straße. Solche Schäden bedürfen sofortigen Reparaturen – selbst bei Nacht damit nicht die Sicherheit und das Fahrvergnügen der zahlenden Gäste beeinträchtigt werden.

Jedes Frühjahr beginnt die Winterschneeräumaktion. 600.000 Kubikmeter bis zu 8 Metern hohe Schneemassen sind zu beseitigen. Im April rücken 5 von Franz Wallack entwickelte Spezialfräsen und 10 Spezialisten aus und legen die gesamte Strecke von 48 km in 2 Wochen frei. In den ersten Jahren brauchten 350 Mann für diese Arbeit 70 Tage.

Die erste Probefahrt der Strecke fand am 22. September 1934 statt, als die Straße noch im Rohbau war. Ein gewisser Rehrl startete in einem umgebauten PKW Steyr 100 über das Hochtor bis nach Heiligenblut und zurück, in sensationellen 7 Stunden.

Definitiv los ging es am 3. August 1935 mit der großen feierlichen Eröffnung und Tausenden an Schaulustigen. Tags darauf fand das erste internationale Glockner-Rennen auf der noch nicht asphaltierten Straße statt. Mit 75 Fahrern, die europäische Rennelite, auf einem Abschnitt von 19,5 Kilometer und 1.600 Höhenmeter. Das damalige Siegergeld umgerechnet 6.900 € war für Mario Tadini (I) auf Alfa Romeo P3: in 14:42,72 Minuten.

Und dieses Jahr, fand am 5-7 September auf abgesperrter Strecke mit einem Starterfeld von 95 Autos darunter zahlreiche Fahrzeuge aus GB-Produktion von Riley über Aston Martin, bis Morgan und MG’s. Museen und Ausstellungen, und die höchste Automobilausstellung der Welt unter dem Motto „Der Berg, die Straße, das Erlebnis“ befindet sich am Standort „Kaiser Franz-Josefs Hütte“. Der Kaiser geruhte zu Wandern und so machte der 26 jährige Monarch im Jahre 1856 einen Abstecher nach Heiligenblut, am Fuße des Berges, und stieg in 4 Stunden zur Pasterze hinauf. Daran erinnert heute eine Gedenktafel „Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe“ 2.369 Metern, oberhalb des großen gebührenfreien Parkhauses. Dieser Platz wird auch als Endpunkt der Großglocknerstraße

bezeichnet, für Fans von Automuseen ist die Dauerausstellung

„Erfolgsgeschichte des Automobils“ zu empfehlen, in diesem dem höchstgelegenen Automuseum der Welt. Für Freunde der Natur liegt zu Füssen der sich zurückziehende Pasterzengletscher, sowie der atemberaubende Rundblick auf die vielen Dreitausender.

Seine kaiserliche Gemahlin „Sissi“ begnügte sich mit einem Ritt hoch zu Ross bis zu der poetisch nach ihr benannten „Elisabethruhe“. Auf diesem ehrenwerten Platz errichtete der Alpenverein 1876 das Glocknerhaus.

von

Bruck,

respektive auch Fusch übers Fuscher Törl durch das Hochtor zum Kreisverkehr, hier ist die Abzweigung Heiligenblut vorzuziehen.

Dieser Abschnitt bietet eine sehr schöne Abfahrt und man soll diese sogar bis zu der etwa 3 km entfernten im Tal liegenden Tankstelle verlängern. Die Durchfahrt der Mautstellen ist an dem gelösten Tag so oft möglich, wie man will und kann. Kameras erfassen die KFZ-Nummer und geben so die Strecke frei.

Der

Abstecher

zur

Kaiser-Franz-

Josefs-Höhe ist fahrerisch weniger attraktiv, jedoch soll jeder für sich entscheiden was er erleben und sehen will. Wer alle Stellen und Ausstellungen

und

Museen

der

Strecke besuchen will, wird den ganzen Tag dafür einplanen müssen.

An

Wochenenden

und

an

Kaiserwettertagen, sowie wir einen erwischt hatten, ist die Strecke leider sehr belastet. Also lieber in der Woche und bei schlechterem Wetter, wegen dem Fahrspaß. Das Klima und die Temperaturunterschiede auf den 1500 Höhenmeter, Unterschied entspricht einer 4.000 Kilometer langen botanischen Reise von Salzburg in die Arktis. Und das bei normaler Durchfahrt in weniger als einer Stunde.

An unserem zweiten Tag war das Wetter unbeständig, der Wettersturz zeigte sich in den Bergen, und in der Nacht vom 10. auf den 11. September fielen die ersten Zentimeter Neuschnee.

Die Murmeltiere, entlang der Straße stehen Warnschilder, dass man diese besonderen Tiere nicht überfahren soll. Diese sind am besten zu entdecken, wenn man zu Fuß einen der vorgeschlagenen Murmelwanderwege geht. Diese Tiere sind mit Geduld tolle Fotomodells, wollen aber ihre „Modellfigur“ behalten, daher soll man sie bitte nicht füttern.

Die Anreise über die A8 Richtung Salzburg und dann Ausfahrt 112 nehmen, Richtung Inzell, Einreise Osterreich über Lofer nach Saalfelden, Zell am See, Kaprun und Großglockner. Diese Region ist einer der Ecken in Osterreich die noch Vignettenfrei ist.

In der Region Pinzgau, Großglockner, Tirol sind mehrere flotte Pässe, freie wie auch Privatstraßen mit Maut, so dass man viele Tage mit dem liebsten Auto dort verbringen soll.

Für reichlich kurvige Abwechslung ist also gesorgt.

Erwähnen wir hier noch die Nockalmstraße und Villacher Alpenstraße für die es günstige Gesamttickets gibt.

Eine angenehme Strecke ist auch die Gerlos Alpenstraße. Der interessante Teil ist von Mittersil bis zur obenliegenden Mautstelle. Nach dieser, Richtung Gerlos, ist die Straße wenig reizvoll. Vielleicht vor der Mautstelle wenden oder durchfahren und dann unten den alten schmalen Weg nach Wald im Pinzgau zurückfahren. Für Wasserfallliebhaber sind die mit 380 Metern an Fallhöhe, die Krimmler Wasserfälle, über drei Stufen, die Höchsten in Europa, sicherlich einen einstündigen Fußmarsch wert.

Bayern und seine schönen Langschaften liegen in Reichweite, München in weniger als 2 Autofahrstunden.

Bekannten in Frankreich entdeckt bei des Ateliers des Coteaux in Blérancourt, sandte er mir wissend dass ein MG Cabriolet auf meiner Wunschliste stand die ersten Fotos. Ein roter MG-B! Rot schon wieder ein rotes Auto, dabei wäre mir ein Britishracinggreen lieber gewesen. Wir fuhren hin, besuchten den Betrieb, sahen eine beeindruckende Vielfalt an Autos, jeder Natur und jeder Nation, und die Probefahrt überzeugte mich, unter dem Motto: wenn du den nicht nimmst, dann machst du einen riesigen Fehler. Also noch einen roten in die Sammlung mit bereits roten bestückten Autos. Als Kind war mein erstes Tretauto ein rotes, von mir liebevoll genannt „Tutu Rouge“, da ist irgendetwas hängen geblieben.

Da das Auto im September 2012 nach Luxemburg geliefert wurde und meine Termine mir erst erlaubten es dieses Jahr Anfang August 2013 bei der SNCT vorzuführen, was fast ohne Beanstandung passte, eine Ölundichtheit wurde festgestellt. Seitdem im Sommer im Einsatz und das mit Herz und Begeisterung. Es ist das Auto für kurvenreiche Strecken, wie die alpine Bergwelt sie bietet. Kein nachdrückendes Gewicht in der Kurve, Superstraßenlage bei Trockenheit, und eine Leichtigkeit und Freude in der Bedienbarkeit. Der Motor hängt buchstäblich am Gas. Einen Wunsch musste ich mir noch erfüllen, da ich älter und gebrechlicher werde, will ich mich so langsam an das Holz gewöhnen, und deshalb erhielt der

MG ein wunderschönes Holzlenkrad aus dem Programm von Morganpark. Ist nicht original, aber sitzt und passt und gefällt. Was sonst?

Am Großglockner trotz der 1,5 km Höhenunterschiede hat die Leistung des kleinen roten Flitzers mich sehr beeindruckt. Viele moderne Autos wurden überholt, das Ding geht ab wie Schmidt‘s Katze, und sein brubelnder Ton bei niedrigen Touren oder bei Fuß weg vom Gas, ist einfach berauschend. Danke Großbritannien, dass es mal so tolle Autos gab.

Und zum guten Schluss ein Zitat aus einem alten Bergsteigerlied.

“Es haben ja nur halb gelebt, die niemals oben standen!”

OOPS, WE DID IT AGAIN… 1.900 kilomètres sans problème, ou presque. Nous n’avons jamais eu autant de « thumbs-up » qu’en voyageant avec notre Imp. Cette année ma chère et tendre avions décidé de passer une partie de nos vacances auprès des sujets de sa gracieuse Majesté, la Reine d’Angleterre…

C’est ainsi que débutait le récit de notre périple publié dans notre On the Road de 2005.

Cette année encore, la grande rencontre annuelle de l’Imp Club britannique était la raison principale de notre voyage. A l’occasion du 50ième anniversaire de la Hillman Imp, ce meeting était organisé du 2 au 4 août à Perth à 70 km au nord d’Edinburg. Le but du voyage était donc similaire, le pilote et la co-pilote étaient les mêmes, mais, la voiture était différente. Cette fois-ci, c’était au tour de notre Sunbeam Chamois Sport de prouver qu’elle a tout pour devenir une habituée des contrées écossaises. C’était en fait son troisième séjour dans le nord du Royaume Uni. Le premier était lors de sa « naissance » en 1969, puis, une longue pause pour enfin retourner à John O’Groats en décembre 2010 et puis maintenant, Perth et « greater region ». Le kilométrage était fort différent aussi, 3.500 cette fois ci, et sans problème aucun. Nettoyage de pare-brise et appoints d’huile, forts nombreux j’en conviens, étaient les seuls travaux de maintenance nécessaires durant tout le périple. « Thumbs-up » et regards admiratifs, bien sûr, et en grand nombre, surtout quand le petit bolide dépassait sur la troisième ou quatrième file du « Motorway up north ». Bien plus, à chaque arrêt aux « Services », non seulement des regards admiratifs, mais des questions et du genre « Where are you coming from ? » puis « Did you drive the whole way up here in that … ? » et des discussions qui commençaient comme « Lovely Imp, I regret having sold mine three years ago … » ou « Oh, you changed to 13 inch wheels as well, one of my neighbours… » et encore « I used to race them when they were young, once the camber was set to negative, the crappy M..is were left behind!” et s’en suivaient 10 minutes “ d’Impologie”. Le comble était cependant au retour, à la première station d’essence en Belgique:

“ Hi, I’m Scottish from Glasgow, my daughter lives in Linwood where they used to build them and I had two of them …”. Mais revenons-en au début de notre voyage.

En cette belle matinée du 28 juillet nous voilà donc tous les trois, l’Imp, Danielle et moi sur la route vers Calais.

Surchargée de bagages pour dix jours de séjour dans un temps incertain, l’Imp n’avait aucun problème de tenir sa vitesse de croisière de 110 - 120 km/h (réels, établis par Garmin) et, malgré les températures estivales, réussissait parfaitement à garder sa température pile-poil au milieu de la jauge. Nous avancions tellement bien que nous avons pu prendre le Ferry une heure plus tôt que prévu et arrivions de bonne heure après 310 miles à notre Hôtel à Wye pas loin de Douvres. L’occasion de prendre deux excellentes « pints of bitter » en guise d’apéritif. Cet excès, serait-il à l’origine de mon rêve de cette nuit ? Je me voyais recevoir le trophée du « furthest travelled Imp » de mains de Rosemary Smith, ex rally-woman de l’équipe d’usine Rootes. C’était une réelle possibilité, avec environ 1.200 miles sur le compteur en arrivant à Perth. Les autrichiens arriveront avec les Imps de course sur la remorque, tout comme l’ami Heinz de St. Vith. Les autres belges et néerlandais prendront soit le bateau jusqu’à Hull ou auront un bon 200 miles de moins à faire… Qui sait ?

Le lendemain un autre trajet de 320 miles,

jusqu’à Sedgefield dans la région de Newcastle. Nous avions réservé au Hardwick Hall Hotel et … quelle récompense pour le voyage ennuyeux ! Super chambre dans cet hôtel en plein milieu du Hardwick Country Park, une belle promenade sous un ciel bleu autour du lac, un excellent Restaurant et pour terminer, un bon Glenmorangie au bar. Somme toute, on n’est plus très loin de l’Ecosse! Un hôtel à recommander absolument! www.hardwickhallhotel.co.uk

d’autoroute, des A et B roads nous menaient via Jedburgh, Stirling, Crieff et Aberfeldy à

Kinloch Rannoch chez Macdonald. Finalement des routes mieux adaptés à l’Imp, nous avancions par « bens & glens » (monts et vallées), plein de choses à voir, villages pittoresques, nature sauvage, lochs mystérieux… Arrivés chez Macdonald tout près du Loch Rannoch, le compteur affichait 882 miles.

La partie la plus énigmatique de notre voyage était prévue pour le lendemain. 168 miles pour rejoindre le Loch Ness. Nous décidions de d’abord voir la partie touristique de ce fameux Loch en le longeant la A 82, Fish & Chips à Fort Augustus, visite du Loch Ness Center & Exhibition à Drumnadrochit avec achat obligatoire de souvenirs pour la famille et un petit fanion écossais pour l’Imp. Après avoir essayé d’expliquer à une famille de touristes asiatiques que l’Imp est une voiture écossaise qui vient du Luxembourg, (je crains que je n’ai pas très bien réussi) nous repassions sur le côté plus sauvage du Loch pas trop loin de Inverness pour ensuite rejoindre Foyers. Là, nous avions réservé une chambre dans un petit hôtel familial, superbe accueil, bon dîner mais chambre un peu « basic » pour le même prix que le Hardwick Hall. 1 050 miles au compteur.

matin,

nous

pouvions profiter pleinement du temps typiquement écossais. Pas de pluie,

mais une sensation

d’humidité extrème, ciel voilé d’un gris profond et des nuages bas qui cachaient les montagnes du côté nord du Loch jusqu’à 50 mètres de la rive. Au milieu de cette grisaille, le Loch Ness avec ses eaux brunâtres en rajoutait à l’atmosphère angoissante … à en avoir froid au dos. Pour nous remonter le moral, nous décidions d’explorer les petites B roads de la région. The Impish roads of the Highlands, quelle joie… Bailebeag, Lyne of Gorthleck, Ault-na-Goire … pas étonnant que cette région fait régulièrement partie de la longue étape de nuit du LeJog. Nous passions l’heure de midi à Fort William sur le Loch Eil. Après une promenade dans la « GrandRue » de cette sympathique petite ville, nous jugions qu’un petit Fish & Chips et un bitter était de mise sur la terrasse, maintenant ensoleillée, d’un Pub local avec vue sur le Loch. Nous prenions le chemin le plus rapide pour Perth, la ville ou l’Imp Club National allait avoir lieu sur le terrain de la piste de course de chevaux. Nous ne manquions cependant pas de passer à côté du Ben Nevis, avec ses 1 344 mètres, la dénivellation la plus élevée de l’île britannique.

A Perth, nous rejoignions d’abord le « Rally Control » à l’entrée du site pour récupérer nos papiers, le programme définitif et notre plaque de Rallye. Nous étions acceuillis par: « Oh, you’re coming up from Luxembourg, so you’re definitively a candidate for the furthest travelled Imp. » Mon rêve allait-il devenir réalité? Le programme du soir contenait un des « highlights » du weekend, deux heures de « track night » au Knockhill Racing Circuit.

Nous nous hâtions pour rejoindre notre hôtel pour le check-in et pour alléger l’Imp, c.à.d. monter tous les bagages dans notre chambre pour ne pas emporter de poids inutile sur le circuit. Nous étions descendus au Huntingtower Hotel, typiquement écossais à 3 miles du centre-ville en plein milieu d’un parc verdoyant. Quand nous arrivions, un piper était posté à l’entrée de l’hôtel, mais, à mon grand étonnement, il ne commençait pas à jouer de sa cornemuse quand l’Imp faisait son entrée… En fait il attendait les invités d’un mariage. Nous avons quand même eu droit au concert lorsque la mariée est arrivée.

Il fallait presque une heure de route pour rejoindre le Knockhill Racing Circuit près de Dunfermline, un bon quart d’heure d’attente, un briefing de 5 minutes et voilà … les lutins étaient lâchés pendant deux heures!

Knockhill est un circuit

relativement court, très vallonné, avec la ligne droite (départ et arrivée) en montée, un long virage à droite en descente suivi d’un enchainement de virages assez étroits en légère montée qui débouchent sur une longue légère courbe à droite avant d’entrer

dans

une

épingle

après

laquelle

recommence la droite. Amusant au plus haut point! Mes petits 55cv ne faisaient pas le poids contre le vraies Imps de course munis de moteurs de 1.000 voire de 1.200 cc qui me dépassaient allègrement dans la longue droite et la longue courbe. La descente faisait la différence entre les lâches et les courageux. Papillons ouverts le plus longtemps possible, freiner le plus tard possible. En fait il fallait avoir plus de confiance dans les freins que dans soi-même pour bien négocier le virage serré à droite. Comme mes freins semblaient bien fonctionner, mon courage augmentait de tour à tour jusqu’au moment où le drift pour rentrer dans le virage n’était plus vraiment contrôlé. Voilà, la limite, la mienne comme celle des simples pneus de route, était

trouvée. Le vrai frisson, je l’ai eu au sixième tour. J’approche de l’épingle plein tube, bien à gauche pour, en plein freinage, couper vers la droite sur la ligne idéale. Mais, plein freinage, il n’en fut rien! Bien qu’appuyant de toutes mes forces sur la pédale de frein, la décélération était minime, l’habitacle se remplissait d’une désagréable odeur de brulé et j’ai pu de toute justesse éviter le bac à gravier. A partir de là, cinq tours de « push » un tour de « cool down » pour les freins. Au bout d’une petite heure, j’avais moi-même aussi besoin d’un « cool down ». Je sortais donc de la piste pour un appoint de liquide, eau de source pour moi et huile bien fraiche pour l’Imp. Après un petit quart d’heure je rejoignais la piste pour une autre bonne demie heure.

Quelle expérience ! Ce superbe circuit permettait vraiment de s’en donner à cœur joie, de pousser la voiture à l’extrème avec, comme sentence maximale, une visite au bac à gravier.

L’ami Heinz de St Vith était moins heureux. Il avait amené son Imp de course sur la remorque pour roder son nouveau moteur sur ce circuit. Au bout de mon deuxième tour, drapeau jaune.

Le bolide noir, orange et jaune de Heinz était garé à droite de la piste et attendait la dépanneuse. Vers la fin de son premier tour, le témoin de pression d’huile s’allumait et Heinz décidait de ne pas prendre le risque de faire exploser son moteur flambant neuf.

Le Club avait prévu une visite d’un parc animalier pour le vendredi. Comme les lions, cerfs, aigles et autres animaux sont les mêmes dans un zoo écossais, belge, allemand ou français, nous avions décidé reprendre la route pour rajouter quelques miles au compteur. La destination principale était, Linwood ou se trouvait l’usine Rootes spécialement érigée pour y construire les Imps. Après avoir parcouru une telle distance jusqu’en Ecosse, nous n’étions pas à ces quelques miles près, surtout que l’ancien bâtiment administratif de l’usine existe toujours.

Après un excellent petit-déjeuner écossais nous voilà donc repartis. Des routes A, puis le contournement de Glasgow via Paisley pour finalement rejoindre Linwood. Comme nous n’avions pas pris l’adresse du bâtiment, il nous fallait un peu de temps pour le trouver. De nos jours le bâtiment abrite le « St James Business Center ». Comme il n’y avait aucun contrôle de sécurité, nous pouvions entrer librement. Je marchais sur le même parquet, j’empruntais les

mêmes escaliers que le Prince Philippe quand il inaugurait l’usine le 2 mai 1963.

Malheureusement il ne reste rien d’autre des halls de production que des photos.

Comme le temps restait superbe, nous décidions, de quitter la région urbaine autour de Glasgow, de retrouver la nature et de remonter un peu plus loin au nord pour découvrir le Loch Lomond. Encore un Loch ! En quoi allait-il être différent de la douzaine d’autres Lochs que nous avons déjà vu ? Et bien, Loch Lomond est différent. Il se situe dans une vallée bien large, avec des petites plages de cailloux blancs, des canards et des cygnes paisibles et des bateaux de plaisance qui gambergent sur les flots bleus.

Quelle différence avec le Loch Ness. Fini l’atmosphère angoissante, ici tout est léger et ouvert, presque méditerranéen. Il faut absolument visiter le pittoresque village de Luss. Nous nous garions sur le grand parking à l’extérieur du village, à côté d’une Aston Martin DB4, nous longions le Loch pour nous rendre de l’autre côté du village près de l’église. Un Piper attendait à côté d’une Daimler MkII… de nouveau pas nous, mais les jeunes mariés et leurs invités qu’il escortait en cortège jusqu’à l’Hotel Loch Lomond ou nous avions l’intention de prendre notre déjeuner. Aucun problème, ceci nous permettait de découvrir le pub en plein centre du village qui servait une excellente entrecôte Angus … Après une « promenade digestive » nous remontions dans l’Imp pour rejoindre, de nouveau « par bens et par glens » notre hôtel à Perth ou nous avions réservé une table pour le dîner et ou, finalement, nous avions l’occasion de déguster le Haggis, le plat national écossais.

Samedi matin, le Club avait organisé la visite de la résidence d’été des frères Rootes (créateurs de l’empire Rootes avec les marques Hillman, Humber, Sunbeam, Singer, Talbot, Commer et Karrier), le Glenalmond Estate près du « river Almond » légèrement au nord entre Perth et Crieff. Même si nous ne pouvions pas visiter l’intérieur de cette superbe maison de maître, nous étions admis dans le jardin, ou plutôt, dans le parc de plusieurs hectares. Pelouse typiquement anglaise, végétation très soignée, court de tennis à 200 mètres de la maison, barbecue géant, halls qui pourraient stocker un trentaine de voitures … une propriété à en rêver. Rosemary Smith faisait partie du convoi avec son fidèle

entièrement restauré et

rebaptisé JAI 791 car immatriculé par Rosemary dans son pays natal, l’Irlande. C’est avec cette voiture que Rosemary a participé à des rallyes comme le Scottish Rally, la Coupe des Alpes ou le R.A.C. Rally en 1965 et 1966. Le palmares est Impressionant : 1st Ladies Cup ; 1ière Coupe des Dames : 2nd Ladies Award ; 1st & 2nd in class, 5th Overall … mais surtout le Manufacturer’s Team Prize au R.A.C. Rally 1965 (3 Imps au départ, 3 Imps à l’arrivée).

Ceci est d’autant plus notable qu’avec 162 concurrents au départ, seulement 62 voyaient l’arrivé. A l’âge de 76 ans, Miss Smith a gardé un sacré coup de volant !

La Gillie, fraichement restaurée, était l’autre « highlight » de la matinée. Ce prototype, qui aurait pu devenir un concurrent pour la M..i Moke, était exposé pour notre libre inspection sur la terrasse du Glenalmond Estate.

Tout comme le Zimp, le Gillie est un autre projet abandonné pour des raisons purement « comptables ». La matinée se terminait par la « Famous Grouse Experience ». Famous Grouse étant le « sponsor rafraichissement » au stand du BSCOC à l’Autojumble, nous ne pouvions absolument pas manquer cette visite.

Comme nous étions de retour en début d’aprèsmidi à Perth nous décidions d’explorer la côte est de l’Ecosse et de nous rendre à St Andrews pour, plus tard, terminer la soirée avec de la Ceilid Dance au Nelson Stand du Club à Perth. St Andrews est une superbe ville universitaire et la capitale du golf. L’Université de St Andrews est la plus ancienne d’Ecosse et le Royal and Ancient Golf Club, fondé en 1754, est toujours l’autorité législative mondiale (exepté USA et Mexique) pour ce sport. Tout à l’avantage de mon compte en banque nous arrivions cinq minutes avant la fermeture des magasins et avions tout le temps pour nous consacrer au choix d’un restaurant pour le soir. Après une promenade d’une bonne heure, nous nous rendions au Vine Leaf Restaurant. Même si le patron était un fan de M..i et de Ford Anglia, les deux concurrents

majeurs de l’Imp, nous passions un excellent moment en dégustant des Saint Jacques et du loup de mer de la pêche du matin. Nous étions de retour à Perth à la soirée du Club quelque peu après 21 heures. Après avoir attendu pendant bien plus de cinq minutes dans la file sans que une seule des douze personnes avant nous ait eu l’opportunité de commander une bière, rien qu’en nous regardant dans les yeux et sans dire un mot, ma chère et tendre décidions de rentrer à l’hôtel et de déguster une bière soignée dans le calme du bar du Huntingtower.

Il est tradition aux Imp Club Nationals que toutes les voitures sont exposées et

catégories.

Cette

année 190 Imps et dérivés étaient arrangées en 14 catégories au centre du Perth Race Course. Tout y est représenté, des voitures

extrêmement

complètement

originales

modifiées,

des

ou

alors

modèles

superbement restaurés et des presqu’épaves ou l’on se demande comment elles ont pu passer le MOT. Des voitures de course avec carrosserie en plastique ou alors la superbe recréation du Bevan Imp, vainqueur du British Saloon Car Racing en 1970, 71 et 72 sont aussi au rendez-vous. En flânant le long des rangées, on ne sent pas le temps passer et nous devions nous presser pour pouvoir fouiller les stands de pièces de rechange avant de nous rendre à la cérémonie de remise des prix.

Comme mentionné, il est tradition que Rosemary Smith remette les trophées, mais, cette année, elle était rejointe par Andrew Cowan un autre pilote d’usine Rootes ayant beaucoup couru sur Imp. Son meilleur exploit était cependant sa victoire sur le London – Sydney Marathon en 1968 sur Hillman Hunter.

J’attendais avec impatience l’annonce du « furthest travelled Imp ». Mon rêve allait-il devenir réalité ?

Hélas, non ! Un australien, encore bien plus f… que moi, avait rallié Perth – Australie à Perth – Ecosse en mettant quelque 18.000 km sur le compteur de son Imp. Chapeau !

Si nous avions décidé de monter vers l’Ecosse par la route, nous avions réservé le Ferry Hull – Zeebruges pour rentrer. Nous passions notre lundi sur la route pour parcourir les 315 miles, en majeure partie sur A-roads, qui séparent Perth et Kingston-upon-Hull. Si nous étions gâtés par le soleil en Ecosse, nous avions à peine roulé quelques miles en Angleterre que la pluie était au rendez-vous. Au fur et à mesure la pluie changeait en déluge et nous n’avancions qu’à 50, 55 mph. Plus nous nous approchions de Hull, plus le temps s’éclaircissait et nous arrivions bien à l’heure pour l’embarquement. Le voyage à bord du « Pride of York »

était

agréable,

la

cabine

petite

mais

confortable, le restaurant très convenable, et les prix, hors taxes, du shop assez alléchants pour acheter l’une ou l’autre bouteille de Scotch et, pour mon cœur octagonal, de la « Speckled Hen ».

J’espère que ce récit de notre aventure écossaise et ces quelques photos vous ont mis l’eau à la bouche pour visiter vous aussi cet étonnant pays qu’est l’Ecosse. Je ne veux pas forcément vous inciter de voyager en Imp, tout autre « British Classic », d’AC à Westfield, fera tout aussi bien l’affaire… ou presque !

FASZINATION OLDTIMER „Autojumble“ 2013 im Zeichen des Automobilsports in Luxemburg Die 100-jährige Geschichte des Automobilsports in Luxemburg stand im Vordergrund des „Autojumble“ 2013, das am 9. und 10. März 2013 Tausende Oldtimer-Fans in die LuxExpoMessehallen lockte. Ansonsten war das Erfolgsrezept von Luxemburgs einziger OldtimerMesse unverändert – und bewährte sich erneut.

Historische Fahrzeuge, Ersatzteile, Modellautos und Oldtimer-Clubs – so in etwa lässt sich die Mischung zusammenfassen, die das Grundrezept des von der „Lëtzebuer Oldtimer Federatioun“ (LOF) organisierten „Autojumble“ ausmacht. Die Veranstaltung bietet für jeden etwas: Oldtimer-Besitzer können ihre automobilen Schätze ausstellen, und solche, die es werden wollen, können sich an den Ständen der Oldtimer-Clubs über Vor- und Nachteile bestimmter Marken und Modelle informieren. Parallel dazu ist das „Autojumble“ auch alljährlich ein Treffpunkt der Generationen: Immer wieder kann man ganze Familien – Großeltern, Eltern und Kinder beziehungsweise Enkelkinder – beobachten, die an den

einzelnen Ständen Halt machen, um dem Nachwuchs jene Fahrzeuge zu zeigen, die dereinst die Traumwagen ganzer Generationen waren.

Autos, Ersatzteile, Miniaturen Das Spektrum der historischen Exponate war erneut sehr weit gefächert: Ein Teil der Messe war dem Motorsport im Allgemeinen und 100 Jahren Automobilsport in Luxemburg im Besonderen gewidmet, ansonsten waren es die „üblichen“ Klassiker, die die Besucher in ihren Bann zogen: historische Motorräder, Autos, Lieferwagen, Busse und sogar Traktoren sorgten für reichlich Abwechslung. Abgerundet wurde das Angebot durch die Stände von Modellauto, Werkzeug-, Teile- und Zubehörhändlern.

Pub-Atmosphäre und Start-Aufstellung beim BSCOC Auch der Stand des BSCOC stand ganz im Zeichen des Motorsports: Er war der Start-Aufstellung bei einem Langstreckenrennen nachempfunden.

Während unzähliger

nahezu Stunden

hatte das freiwillige “Standbauer-Team” – im Wesentlichen bestehend aus den Mitgliedern Marc Weyer, Pierre Weins und Bob Feyereisen – den BSCOC-“Autojumble”Auftritt geplant und gestaltet. Besonderer Dank gilt natürlich den Club-Mitgliedern, die ihre Fahrzeuge für die Dauer des “Autojumble” zur Verfügung getsellt hatten, dem Unternehmen “Codex”, das die Hauptbauteile für den Stand geliefert hatte, und dem Pub “The Black Stuff”, das den BSCOC alljährlich mit Whisky der Marke “The Famouse Grouse” versorgt.

LOF-Präsident Jean-Marie Schmit zeigte sich mit dem Verlauf des „Autojumble“ 2013 zufrieden. Die milden Temperaturen hatten ihren Teil dazu beigetragen, dass viele Besucher den Weg in die LuxExpo-Messehallen – wo zum gleichen Zeitpunkt als Parallelveranstaltung die Gartenmesse „Jardirêve“ stattfand – gefunden hatten. Auch waren viele Oldtimer-Besitzer mit ihrem Klassiker zum „Autojumble“ gekommen: Der Parkplatz des Messegeländes wurde so zu einem Open-Air-Oldtimer-Meeting.

PROJECTION PRIVÉE DU FILM "RUSH" POUR LES MEMBRES DU BSCOC À MONDORF Le dimanche 20 octobre 2013 une quarantaine de membres de notre bien-aimé club ainsi que leurs amis se sont donnés rendez-vous dans le parc de Mondorf-les-Bains pour assister à une projection privée du film « RUSH » en attendant les premiers résultats des élections législatives. La salle de projection du Ciné Wasserhaus (groupe Caramba), situé à côté de la source Kind du Domaine Thermal, offrait le charme d’antan sans devoir renoncer aux moyens technologiques les plus modernes.

Le film « RUSH » de Ron Howard, sorti uniquement quelques semaines au préalable dans les salles, raconte le duel impitoyable que se livraient les 2 pilotes de la formule 1 James Hunt et Niki Lauda lors de la saison 1976, saison

marquée par le terrible accident de Niki Lauda au Grand Prix d’Allemagne au Nürburgring. Le film a été applaudi par nos membres et confirme ainsi les très bons échos qu’il a eu dans la presse jusqu’à présent, certains critiques envisageant déjà une éventuelle nomination aux Oscars. En particulier la prestation de Daniel Brühl, qui joue le rôle de Niki Lauda , est particulièrement remarquable.

A l’issue de la projection, nos membres ont pu échanger leurs impressions, voire même commenter

les

premières

estimations

des

résultats

des

élections

législatives

luxembourgeoises autour du pot d’amitié offert par le club.

Au vue du succès de cet événement, espérons que la saison 2014 offrira encore des films intéressants méritant l’organisation d’une projection privée spéciale pour les membres du BSCOC !

ENJOYING THE BRITISH AUTOMOBILE CULTURE What motivates the average British Sports Car Owners Club to travel to the United Kingdom?

Is it possibly the great British food, the pubs, the country side, the tea with a spot of milk?

Personally, one of the things I enjoy about Britain is very simply it’s automobile culture.

Believe it or not, that’s why I own a British sports car. So what better way than, when planning your next trip to the UK, to take in that automobile culture by visiting the numerous, and I mean numerous, museums dedicated to keeping that heritage alive.

On my recent trips, not planning to do so obviously, I did visit a couple of motoring museums in different parts of Britain which I believe are worth a visit for anyone passing in those regions The

fascinating

Lakeland

Motor

Museum nestles in the picturesque Leven Valley, at Backbarrow, close to the southern tip of Lake Windermere in the Lake District.

It offers a unique collection of some 30,000 exhibits assembled over a period of almost 50 years which are thoughtfully

displayed

alongside

many non-motoring additions.

The museum exists to collect, preserve and interpret motoring heritage for the public benefit and to provide educational opportunities, whilst providing a thoroughly enjoyable visitor experience via an awakening of motoring memories.

The museum is for everyone, regardless of age, gender or disability and attracts visitors of all backgrounds. Those without a keen interest in motoring will enjoy finding out why so many people are so fascinated about the subject The museum has perhaps the largest collection of motoring memorabilia on public display, in the UK. Petrol pumps, globes, clothing, enamel advertising signs, pedal cars, badges, mascots, garage equipment, die-cast scale models, artworks, motor spirit and oil containers, toys and games, pottery, and glassware.

Travelling south, and I mean way south to the New Forest, I stumbled upon a museum quite by accident.

Although

this

may not be my cup of tea, I was amazed by Sammy Miller’s

unbelievable

motorcycle

collection

which is displayed in his own private museum.

Sammy

Miller

is

a

championship winning motorcycle racer, in both road racing and trials who became British Trials Champion 11 times and won the European Trials Championship twice. In his continuing career, Miller was a winner of over 1300 trials, nine gold medals and the International Six Days Trial, three victories at the North West 200, as well as coming 3rd in the 1957 250cc Grand Prix in championship.

motorcycles, including both trials events and the Isle of Man TT races.

When Ariel were absorbed by BSA in 1964, he formed a partnership with a Spanish firm, Bultaco, and went on to become the lead developer of modern

two-stroke

trials

motorcycles. The bike he created was the Sherpa T. He set up his own motorcycle parts business in 1964 in New Milton, Hampshire, and put a few of his old racing motorcycles in the corner, later to become the Sammy Miller Motorcycle museum. Today’s collection contains more than 1200 motorcycles fully restored and neatly divided into four sections; the road bikes, the sports bikes, the racing bikes as well the racing hall, and all are runners!

The exhibition includes the V8 Moto Guzzi, 1950 Bicilindrical, Moto Villa, Nortons, AJSs, Excelsiors, Velocette & 100s more. It also is one of the greatest collections of factory prototype bikes, 5 cylinder bikes and ingenious design of bikes, from all over the world including multi cylinder motorcycles.

And if you do visit, you will most likely meet the man himself, as he not only passes everyday through his museum, but at the age of 80 still takes his bikes for a ride on a daily run no matter what the weather.

The south of London holds for me personally the most authentic and complete collection of British engineering, the Brooklands Museum.

Brooklands, the world's first purposebuilt motor racing circuit and thus the

birthplace

of

british

motor

racing, was built by local landowner Hugh Locke King on 330 acres of farm and woodland on his estate at Weybridge in Surrey. As soon as the design of the track was entrusted to Colonel H.C.L. Holden of the Royal Artillery, the original plans began to grow beyond Locke King’s wildest expectations. Far from his initial idea of a simple road circuit, Locke King was persuaded that, in order for cars to achieve the highest possible speeds, with the greatest possible safety, the 2¾ mile circuit would need to be provided with two huge banked sections nearly 30 ft. high. The track would be 100 ft. wide, made of concrete and include two long straights, one running for half a mile beside the London to Southampton Railway, and an additional ‘Finishing Straight’ passing the Paddock and enclosures, bringing the total length of the track to 3¼ miles. This outstanding feat of engineering was built in only nine months and eventually cost Hugh Locke King his personal fortune, a price equal to millions of pounds today.

Before the first race was even run, Brooklands was the venue for a dramatic speed record attempt. A few days after the ceremonial opening of the Motor Course in June 1907, the motor-racing pioneer, Selwyn Francis Edge, used the Track for establishing a 24 hour record.

With hundreds of roadside lanterns to mark the inner edge of the Track and bright flares to illuminate the rim Edge drove his green six-cylinder Napier for the whole 24 hours covering

1,581 miles at an average speed of almost 66 miles an hour. Supported by two other Napiers on the run, Edge established a record which stood for 17 years.

The Museum displays a wide range of Brooklands-related

motoring

and

aviation exhibits ranging from giant racing cars, motorcycles and bicycles to an unparalleled collection of Hawker

and

Vickers/

BAC-built

aircraft, including the Second World War Wellington Bomber, Viking, Varsity, Viscount, Vanguard, VC10, BAC One-Eleven and the only Concorde with public access in South East England.

Brookland also houses the London Bus Museum, a remarkable collection of around 35 buses and coaches, the largest collection of working historic London buses in the world The vehicles are all of London origin and date from about 1875 to 1979 and are arranged in a timeline from the early horse bus to more modern buses similar to those on London’s streets today.

these

museums is the way they are presented. Believe it or not, even the wife starts to be interested through these wonderful museums in the history of the British motoring culture, or could it be that you promised to take her shopping the following day!

1963 Jensen C-V8 chassis 104-2059 Having a soft spot for the rarer old vehicles, especially anything in polyester (GRP), I had been drawn to a June 2012 advert for a 1963 Jensen C-V8 for sale at a classic garage in Kent, England.

The dealer, Justin Banks Ltd, had published some delicious photographs online and as we were about to visit UK family we passed by to have a look. It was certainly a very attractive beast and despite a tendency to overheat

on test-drive ( noted by my non-technical wife yet

conveniently ignored by her star-struck husband !) I was pretty interested ( smitten really ) and felt I would like to know more about these fast Grand Tourers which I remember first seeing in 1962 as a 9 year old boy.

First step ? Join the club. The Jensen Owners Club is very active, with many meetings around its Regions in the UK. The older hands offer a vast array of information and technical advice on their website and I soon discovered a whole

lot

about

Jensens,

more

especially about C-V8’s Mk1, Mk2, and

Mk3, and in particular about chassis 2059. It turned out that the previous owner, a lady JOC clubmember, had crashed the car and the front end had suffered bonnet and shroud damage.

Now, six years later here was the car for sale after a body rebuild.

I had

inspected it during my visit in June 2012 and since then I had “got lucky” as the car was still available over two months later and I concluded a deal with Justin Banks in September 2012 and involving a part exchange for my doggy-but-fast old RHD Jaguar Mk2 3.8.

A few bonnet trim pieces were missing on the Jensen but in all else the car was in good shape bodily and had been repainted to a very high standard. However, this 130 mph GT with its 305 bhp Chrysler V8 of 5.9 litres was standing on frighteningly cracked 15+ year old tyres ( just how british is that ?? ! ) but it had at least had a good brake rebuild and a new master cylinder and servo – its Dunlop discs are excellent.

5 period Michelins XVS were negotiated at Longstone

Tyres and they were fitted later to the 6Jx15 inch Dunlop wire rims here in Luxembourg.

Romain Allard had kindly offered to help with the logistics and we trailered the Jaguar over to Kent and collected the Jensen in late September 2012.

So, the car was here, it was gorgeous, it had a glorious V-8 soundtrack, it was fast and ……… then.

it boiled !

First ? ….

Work to do

a bad fall and a

broken wrist, so I had become a sad spectator and all work was taken over again by Romain.

Indeed, he quickly

found a wisp of fumes in the coolant, so it was off with its heads and the big radiator was taken down to Haagen.

Happily, even 1963 Chrysler parts are easily available in the US and I got a gasket set delivered to Garage Alcar at Wilwerwiltz in quick time for the top end rebuild. Romain got everything

back together just fine and we expected all would be well. Yes, we expected ……

but all we

got was more boiling !

So by now it was clear that the true problem was probably blocked waterways in the cylinder block; this would be a lot of work, lifting and stripping the big V-8, and having the block dipped in acid. Somebody then suggested an electric water pump - a what ? Yes, an EWP. It was certainly worth a try, and a device was selected from Davies-Craig in Melbourne Australia. Very, very helpful and with plenty of technical tips borne out of a highly successful racing C-V8, they suggested a 115 litre/minute pump with electronic controller for pump and fan ( the car has an electric fan as standard ). Romain fitted it all for me along with the associated wiring for pump, fan, and controller and – Voila ! Problem solved.

This EWP is

certainly a terrific device and the view in the radiator header when 115 litres/min are in full flow has to be seen !

We had a steady 80 degrees at last !

Well, this glamorous Anglo-American sixties Supercar is running beautifully now and turns heads wherever it goes. One has to learn to live with the 16 litre/100km consumption of 98 octane, but somehow the glorious soundtrack and huge acceleration help, just a bit !

With

only 498 (50 Mk1 cars ) built, I had been drawn to the rarity of this automobile, yet today it’s the beautiful quality of the engineering that absorbs my fascination.

MAD DOG AND ENGLISHMAN GO ‌ TO LUXEMBOURG (1st may 2013) Hello my 4 wheel friends in all shapes, forms and age, hope you are parked comfortably to listen to a short story about my excursion to Luxembourg.

Oh pardon me, I did not introduce myself, my full name is Terrier Mk2, shortened to T2 for my friends. I have a very light tubular chassis, mostly aluminium body and a Cosworth Ford Anglia engine as my heart, which is supplied with oxygen and petrol by 2 rather large Webber carbs.

Of course as all British cars I am a female and must be treated properly and with respect for my age (53 this year).

I have a nice big garage nearly all to myself and a slave (well I don’t pay him anything) who cleans, polishes, services and repairs me as necessary. He also has the job of taking me to nice places to meet my friends and make new ones. My garage is in France 30kms west of Basel, Switzerland.

No idea where got the idea to go to Luxembourg on the 1st May and to drive up a hill, because my slave is not bad on a circuit but useless on a hill climb. I think the reason was that I had not

been on a long run for a bit and needed to clear my throat a bit (cylinder head and exhaust for all you who don’t understand the “jargon”), and a round trip of 800kms seemed like fun.

Sunday morning meeting with my 4 wheel friends in Guebwiller, 50kms from my garage, I lifted my front wheel and fluid was leaking from

cylinder, making a mess on my under tray.

I got my slave to remove the slave cylinder (how about that for an appropriate job for him).

This was quite a process at the work space available was very limited and it took a long time to remove the cir-clip holding the cylinder to the bell housing. He is not the fastest mechanic around.

Well the piston rubber was the problem, so my “man” tried all Monday to get one with no success. So I told him to write to Patrick to say we were not coming. Then on Monday evening I had a brilliant idea.

I have a garage companion called Terrier Mk4 series 1 (long name) and maybe her slave would fit although she has a aluminium bell housing and mine is iron. She said it looked the same and said she would lend it to me. The slave had to remove T4’s cylinder from underneath, a real fiddly job, even less room than inside me as T4 is a single seater with a very narrow chassis. Job done, cylinder removed and 30 minutes later the transplant has been completed. Now bleed the system. Not a job my man can do properly by himself. So on Tuesday morning got the slave’s neighbour to come round to assist. All done. Come on take me out for a short run to see

if everything is ok. Great back home no leaks. Write another email to Patrick telling him we are now coming!! Check my tappets, points gap, tyre pressures, oil and water and fill up the petrol tank Mr. Slave!! My goodness you have to remind him of everything, poor guy, getting on a bit now, tends to forget things.

Now early night tonight, have to leave at 4am for the 400km/5 hour drive to Luxembourg.

Wednesday morning 4am. Dark, damp and a bit foggy. So my lovely polished aluminium coat is going to get nice and dirty!! First 40 minutes not too bad until we get to the bottom of the Col de Bussang to go over the Vosges (780m at the top). Although my lights are quite good, the fog was really dense making my ascent very slow and mostly in 2nd gear. On the other side it was better the roads just being a bit damp, although it did rain a couple of times, not too much though. I don’t have a hat to put on in case it rains. After Nancy the weather improved and roads were dry, but from Epinal to Luxembourg is all motorway and really rather boring. We had to stop just before the border to add some fuel (we always carry 10 litres reserve), when the blood supply to my heart ran low (no fuel gauge).

My man was following Patrick’s

directions to Eschdorf, which were perfect and the last 40 or so kms from the motorway to Eschdorf were on some lovely

twisty

country

roads which were exactly our cup of tea. Eschdorf 9am!!! Everybody helpful and friendly, showed my man where to get the paperwork done, met Patrick, the guys wanted to scrutineer me and made me open my blouse as they wanted to inspect my heart or something like that. We found a nice parking place at the crossroads by the assembly area. Lots of people came to admire me and were introduced by the slave (also in his job description to tell everybody about my history and virtues!!). As I am not FIA homologated I was participating in the regularity part of the event. I wont bore you with the technicalities. The hill was 1.8km in length and time taken was about 2 minutes. I had one practice run to see where I have to turn left and right, accelerate, brake and change gear (I

do this for my man and he just pushes the pedals at the right time and twiddles the steering wheel).

Then there were 2 timed runs. So a total of 6 minutes and 6kms. In between, lots people took my photo, although I was not looking my best as the rain had made a mess of my make-up, and RTL TV was very interested in me and even looked into the space where I carry my tools and spares.

I am now quite a star, maybe I will be nominated for an Oscar!! In the afternoon the weather was very pleasant and the sun came out making me sparkle.

The organisation was excellent, I met a lot of new 4 wheel friends, some older and some younger than me and there was even an poor handicapped very young lady there with only 3 wheels, maybe she will get a 4th one when she is grown up. Public and other competitors were very friendly.

We could not hang around for the evening festivities, unfortunately, so at 5.20pm we set off home, on the other half of the 800km round

trip.

Drive

was

pretty uneventful, except that my man got a cramp in his right foot (have to get him to install a cruise control system), and I got wet a couple of times. No fog on the Col de Bussang but a truck had had an accident and the hairpin bends going down were smothered in diesel fuel, so i had to take it really easy as my skinny tyres are not very good on wet and slippery surfaces.

Back in my lovely garage at 10pm, said hello to T4 and thanked her for the clutch cylinder which worked perfectly.

So the mad lady dog did 800kms and was on the road for nearly 10 hours to drive up a hill for a total of 6 minutes. I will be interested to hear what my shrink says about that!!

GUY AND HIS V8 ON TOUR 2013 Auch 2013 war der V8 wieder mehrmals im Einsatz, und dies mit erstaunlicher Zuverlässigkeit.

Aber schön der Reihe nach. Im Mai fanden die Classic Days in Eschdorf regen Zuspruch und ich hoffe, dass wir 2014 abermals mit den “Alten” antreten dürfen. Die langen Wartezeiten müssen allerdings wesentlich verkürzt werden, sonst verlieren die Zuschauer die Lust am Geschehen.

Viele schöne Fahrzeuge gemeldet und einige haben auch zur Freude der Zuschauer richtig Gas gegeben. (siehe Bild). Schönes Video auch auf Youtube unter: Eschdorf Classic Day 2013 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QC1sAY8wLsA Für Ende Mai hatte ich mich schon längst für die Virée des Cols Vosgiens gemeldet. Eine tolle Rallye über 650 km, sehr gut organisiert, wobei die Kategorien Expert und GT schon recht anspruchsvoll sind. Leider musste ich wegen gesundheitlichen Problemen kurzfristig absagen.

Die übrigen Luxemburger Teams haben sich anständig aus der Affäre gezogen, immerhin haben Lambert/Lambert die Expertenklasse gewonnen.

Dann Mitte Juni die Sports Car Days organisiert von Jean Hansen. Eine recht anspruchsvolle Tour, für Neueinsteiger eine Nummer zu schwer, ansonsten aber eine sehr schöne Tour mit viel unbekanntem Terrain jenseits der Mosel. Schammel und ich konnten die Tour gewinnen, allerdings

waren

einige

“Haudegen”

nicht

die

komplette

Tour

gefahren.

Im Juli war wieder die Nordschleife Pur angesagt, fast 120 Minuten freies Fahren unter Artgenossen auf der Nordschleife, ein reiner Genuss. Schade nur, dass ausser Pierre Marnach der ebenfalls mit dem V8 dabei war, niemand sonst diese günstige Gelegenheit genutzt hat.

Im August findet jedes Jahr der Oldtimer GP am Nürburgring statt. Über verschlungenen Wege hatte ich erfahren, dass am Samstag und Sonntag Oldtimer gesucht wurden um mit Zuschauern auf der Nordschleife Runden zu drehen, sogenannte Taxifahrten.

An beiden Tagen waren fast alle Fahrten im Vorfeld vergeben und der V8 spulte locker seine Runden ab. Besonders erfreulich war die Tatsache, dass zwei meiner Mitfahrer nach der ersten Runde gar nicht ausgestiegen sind, sondern noch eine Runde drangehängt haben. Nächstes Jahr stelle ich eine Tipbox in den V8.

Kurz danach fuhr ich mit Freund Schammel die Eifel Ardennen Klassik, gut organisiert von Raymond Braquet. Vormittags lagen wir noch auf dem ersten Platz, verpassten dann aber nach der Mittagspause einige Kontrollen. Irgendwie war das Essen mir wohl nicht bekommen.

Also probierten wir es gleich nochmal bei der Grenzlandtour im September (ebenfalls von Braquet organisiert), diesmal konnten wir die Expertenklasse für uns entscheiden.

Generell sind die Braquet Touren gut organisiert, er hat auch endlich das lästige Aufschreiben von Verkehrsschildern aufgegeben.

© Annick Steichen Der gebührende Abschluss der Saison war abermals die NOLK, meisterhaft organisiert von JM Schmit. In der Expertenklasse waren die vorderen Plätze hart umkämpft, Sieger wurde die Mannschaft Feltes/Betzen. Zusammen mit Co Schammel landeten wir

auf Platz 4.

Erstaunlich in der Saison 2013, bei sämtlichen Ausfahrten ausnahmslos schönes Wetter und keine einzige Panne hat den Spaß vermiest, der V8 hat sich gut geschlagen und ich freue mich auf die Saison 2014.

SPEED RECORDS ON THE BEACH the sandy beaches of Pendine During my holidays in Wales, I was looking for a beach to visit for the day with my family and my dogs. Taking out the British Road Atlas, I came upon a town in the south of Wales, Pendine, with not only a beach, but also a “Museum of Speed”. What better way than to get all your imaginative arguments together to convince the wife that this would be the ideal beach that we’d be heading to.

Pendine, you think that you have just arrived in the biggest Mobile home park in the World. It seems like the whole village is just covered with them

basically felt like we had just taken the

wrong decision to have come here.But then we quickly realized why people would want to spend their holidays here. Pendine Sands is a 7-mile long beach on the shores of Carmarthen Bay. Due to its firm flat surface, the beach created a race track that was straighter and smoother than any roads at the time. As such, since the early 1900s the sands were used as a venue for car and motorcycle races.

In the 1920s it became clear that roads and race tracks were no longer adequate venues for attempts at speed records as these were quickly approaching 150 mph. At these speeds, a straight surface of at least 5 miles in length was needed not only for the measured mile, but also for safe braking afterwards.

The first person to use Pendine Sands for a world land speed record attempt was Malcolm Campbell. On September 25, 1924 he set a world land speed record of 146.16 mph on Pendine Sands in his Sunbeam 350 HP car Blue Bird.

Four other record-breaking runs were made on Pendine Sands between 1924 and 1927; two by Campbell, and two by Welshman J.G Parry-Thomas in his car “Babs” The record was raised by Campbell to 174.22 mph in February 1927.

On March 3, 1927 Parry-Thomas attempted to beat Campbell's record but on his final run he crashed and was killed while travelling at about 170 mph. Tragically, Parry-Thomas thus became the first driver to be killed in a world land speed record attempt. In honor of ParryThomas, his friends buried “Babs” in the sand dunes near the village of Pendine.

bodywork had corroded, so a new body was constructed, melding in where possible any existing original material. The mechanical running gear though was in good condition. Even where components could not be used, they were sufficiently preserved to act as a pattern. The engine was salvageable, but many new replacement parts had to be made from original designs. “Babs” finally came back to life in the early seventies, having to be bump started behind a Land Rover to a speed exceeding 60 mph due to its high gearing.

Pendine has honored the heroics of these brave men, and especially Parry-Thomas and “Babs”, with a lovely little entrance free museum right on the beach.

As you walk in, you see “Babs” looking through the windows onto the beach, and you get the impression that she longs to get back out on the beach and race again.

While walking through the village, we passed a hotel with a dedication plaque on the wall which these “speed” heroes used as their base and you could just imagine the atmosphere as these guys waited for days on end to find the perfect conditions for breaking records.

I can only recommend to anyone in the region to go and see where true motoring history was made.

vehicle stock in 1961, included were roughly 35 ltalias, all of which were shipped to New York to sell. It's believed that between 40 and 50 cars were imported between 1960 and 1962.

Prospective Italia 2000 customers in America had to sign paperwork acknowledging that no body spare parts would be stocked outside Italy, although European market cars could be returned to Ruffino S.p.A. for repair. Availability of Triumph mechanical parts was guaranteed worldwide.

Sadly, Ruffino lost a great deal of money and his faith in the Triumph organization over the failure of the Italia. It's been reported he was so angry that he destroyed many of the coupe's

drawings

and

documents-a tragedy for those fans of the remaining cars who try to restore one to as new today. Its story is complex and its history convoluted, but the Italia 2000 has never been a TR4, and is so much more than simply a rebodied TR3. The ensuing 40 years have transformed it from a used curiosity to a highly sought car, heralded by coach-built car fans and the Triumph faithful as special in its own right.

ON TOUR WITH AN MGB GT V8 Choke ziehen, Benzinpumpe tickt…ein kleiner Dreh und die 8 Zylinder des 3.5 Liter Rover Motors starten. Um halb 4 Uhr morgens verlässt der seltene MG GT V8, von dem nur 2591 Stück gebaut wurden, seine Garage für die nächsten 5 Tage. Off we go zur Alpentour 2013.

Am alten Grenzposten in Düdelingen versammeln sich um 4 Uhr morgens ein Peugeot 504, Mazda MX-5, Porsche Carrera 3.2, Audi 80 Cabriolet, Bmw 130i, Bmw Z4 3.0si und der MG GT V8. Nur Hugo fehlt noch. Der Fiat 128 hatte am Morgen schon Startprobleme und stottert mit etwas Verspätung auf den Parkplatz. Von den 4 Zylinder arbeiten leider nur 3.

Wir entschließen uns trotzdem sofort zu starten. Solange der kleine Fiat auf Touren bleibt, geht’s. Hinter Metz gibt Hugo dann aber auf und wird von einem Abschleppwagen in eine Werkstatt gebracht.

Derweilen spult der V8 mit sonorem Brummen Kilometer um Kilometer ab. In Nanzig wird es auf der Autobahn kurzzeitig taghell. Dem französischen Blitzgerät gefällt der orangefarbene (124 Stück wurden in der Farbe BRAKEN verkauft) MG so gut, dass er sich ein Souvenirfoto machte.

In Grenoble verlassen wir die Autobahn. Hier beginnt die Route Napoléon.

Die Route

Nationale 85 (RN85) folgt Napoleons Marschroute von Golf Juan (bei Antibes) über Grasse, Digne, Sisteron und Gap bis nach Grenobel, die er von Elba kommend, zrücklegte um die Macht zurückzuerobern. Die Strecke mit einer Gesamtlänge von 335 km bewältigte Napoleons Truppe in einem siebentägigen Gewaltmarsch, zwischen dem 1. März 1815 und dem 7. März 1815. Die Straße ist durch Schilder mit kaiserlichen Adlern markiert, da der Marsch auch als

"Adlerflug" (Vol d'Aigle) bezeichnet wird, bezugnehmend auf Napoleons Ausspruch: "Der Nationaladler wird von Kirchturm zu Kirchturm fliegen bis zu den Türmen von Notre-Dame".

Ich gebe dem MG die Sporen und lassen es auf der wunderbar schwungvollen Straßenführung so richtig fliegen. Porsche und BMW donnern vorbei und genießen die ersten Kurven der 6.

Alpentour in vollen Zügen. Bei Gap verlassen wir die Route Napoléon, entlang des Lac de Serre-Ponçon, dem grössten künstlichen See Frankreichs dessen Wasserreserven vor allem der Stromerzeugung dienen. Am frühen Nachmittag treffen wir in Jausiers bei Barcelonnette ein.

Wir entspannen uns bei einem Bier auf der Terrasse und besprechen die erste Alpentouretappe. Derweilen ist Hugo auch wieder unterwegs. Die Werkstatt hat das Problem schnell behoben. Steve und Rudy kamen am frühen Abend an, als schon eine gute Fondue Savoyarde dampfend auf den Tischen stand. Génépi zum Verdauen und ab in die Betten.

Früh morgens werden die Einwohner des kleinen Alpendorfs Jausiers vom V8 des kleinen Engländers wachgerüttelt. Es war kalt in der Nacht und der MG will trotz Choke nicht anbleiben. Ich entscheide mich ein paar Runden durchs Dorf zu drehen, um den Motor auf Betriebstemperatur zu bekommen. Nachdem wir von unserer Aufwärmrunde am Hotel wieder ankommen, haben sich ein paar Schaulustige aus dem Ort am Hotel Belle Vue versammelt, um sich unsere Autos genauer anzusehen. Sie fragen uns, wohin wir fahren und sind erstaunt über unseren Mut mit diesen alten Autos, so eine lange Tour zu wagen. Ein Auto gefällt ihnen besonders gut: der Peugeot 504 im Gendarmerie Grand-Ducale Ornat. Nun aber los!

Am Ende des Dorfes biegen wir links auf die D64 ab, die Route des Grandes Alpes, eine Touristenroute, deren Bau 1912 auf Initiative des französischen Touringclubs TCF begonnen wurde.

Sie verbindet Thonon-les-Bains am Genfer See mit Menton an der Côte d'Azur. Es ist keine einheitlich ausgebaute Straße, sie

ist zum Teil sehr breit und bestens ausgebaut und teilweise sehr schmal und kurvenreich. Die Gesamtstrecke beträgt knapp 700 km, der zu überwindende Höhenunterschied beträgt rund 15700 m. Auf dem Anstieg zum Col de la Bonnette fahren wir an verlassen Militärkasernen und abgeschlossenen Bunkern vorbei.

Die Baumgrenze ist erreicht. Der Motor kämpft mit der immer dünner werdenden Luft. Es fehlt dem MG an Sauerstoff. Kurve um Kurve spürt man wie die Leistung des drehmomentstarken V8 sich reduziert. Mit viel Schwung gehen wir die letzten Serpentinen an und sehen den Wegweiser zum Aussichtspunkt "Cime de la Bonnette". Es ist der höchste asphaltierte Punkt der Alpen – 2802 Meter. Wir parken uns genau

Umdrehungen so gerade noch am Laufen. Ich gönne ihm eine kleine Verschnaufpause während dem ich die Aussicht genieße und mich auf die Abfahrt Richtung Nizza freue.

Kurz nach der Abfahrt, fahren wir an leicht getarnten Opel Insigna vorbei. Es ist das Facelift des Opel Mittelklasse Modells, das hier in den Alpen, eine seiner letzten Testfahrten macht, bevor er im September den möglichen Kunden vorgestellt wird. Auf dem Weg ins Tal durchfahren wir eine verlassene Militärkaserne. 25 km später erreichen

wir Saint-Etienne de Tinée und wir sind 1658 Höhenmeter abgestiegen. Im Tal wartet der nächste Pass auf uns. Der Col de la Couillole ist wirklich was fürs Auge. Schöne Berge rings herum, es ist bewaldet und nicht besonders viel los. Der V8 bollert die Serpentinen hoch zur Passhöhe. Wir kommen schnell voran und biegen nun ab, zu einem anderen Highlight des Tages – die Georges de Cians. Die Schlucht ist ein landschaftlicher Leckerbissen der besonderen Art mit

Gestein.

Die

gut

ausgebaute Straße wird immer wieder von engen Tunneln unterbrochen. Ich schalte einen Gang runter und lade meine Alpentourfreunde zum V8 Konzert. Es ist erstaunlich, wie stimmgewaltig so ein kleiner Engländer sein kann. Die Auspuffanlage von Maniflow ist definitiv jeden Cent wert.

Nach der Mittagspause durchqueren wir parallel zur Ciansschlucht, die Georges de Dalius. Die Var hat hier einen tief eingeschnittenen Canyon gebildet. Die Straße verläuft hoch über dem Grund der Schlucht am Rand der fast senkrecht abfallenden Wände. An einigen Stellen wurde die Fahrbahn geteilt, dass die N-S Richtung im Tunnel verläuft, während die Gegenrichtung am Rand der Schlucht entlang führt. In Guillaumes angekommen, erwartet uns der letzte Pass des heutigen Tages – der Col de la Cayolle. Wir sind nun wieder auf der Hauptroute der Route des Grandes Alpes. Der gute Straßenbelag und die breite Straße gönnen dem Fahrer eine kleine Verschnaufpause nach der anstrengenden und schnellen Kurvenfahrt durch die Schluchten. Dieser Pass gilt unter Kenneren als das "Pièce de Résistance" der Route des Grandes Alpes. Der vollgetankte V8 freut sich auf der letzten Etappe genüsslich Super Plus zu verbrennen. Der Verbrauch liegt um die 10 Liter. OK! Beim Anstieg mussten wir kurzfristig an einer ungünstigen Stelle stehenbleiben. Die Kenlowelüfter funktionierten nicht mehr und die Wassertemperatur stieg und stieg. Ein Wackler am Stecker konnte schnell behoben werden und die Temperatur viel langsam unter den roten

Bereichen. Der 504 tuckert an uns vorbei und ich konnte ein tolles Foto schießen. Die weich abgestimmte Federung der französischen Autos ist definitiv nicht für flotte Kurvenfahrten ausgelegt. Der V8 hat nun wieder seine normale Betriebstemperatur und wir setzen unsere Fahrt fort. Die Fahrbahn wird nun schmaler, die Kurven unübersichtlicher, vor denen sich selbst bei langsamer Fahrt ein Hupsignal empfiehlt. Einmal mehr zeigt sich, wie leicht und flink man mit einem nur 1.50 breiten Oldie ausweichen kann. Die breiten Sportwagen von heute sind da klar im Nachteil. In Jausiers angekommen, kühlen wir uns mit einem guten Bier ab. Wir freuen uns erneut auf einen Abend mit regionalen Spezialitäten. Génépi, Mirabelles und Poire Williams runden einen entspannten Abend mit benzingefüllten Gesprächen ab.

Die Koffer sind gepackt, Ölstand geprüft. Los geht’s auf eine erste Aufwärmrunde durchs Dorf. Die 2. Etappe der Alpentour 2013 führt uns Richtung Norden zum bekannten Skiort les Deux Alpes. Der Col de Vars mit einer Höhe von 2111 Meter ist der erste Pass des Tages.

Wir lassen es gemütlich angehen und genießen die frische Alpenluft, die durch die Dreiecksfenster in den Innenraum weht. Die vorzüglich ausgebaute Strecke erlaubt eine zügige Fahrweise, genau das Richtige für einen Fahrer mit einer morgendlichen Müdigkeit. Die Wechselkurven

Serpentinenkombinationen aufgelockert. Die D902 führt uns weiter durch die Combe de Queyras in Richtung Briançon. Bevor wir die höchstgelegene Stadt Europas erreichen, 1321 m, steht uns der Col d'Izoard bevor. 2 km vor erreichen der Passhöhe liegt die "Casse Déserte", eine steil abfallende Schutthalde mit steil herausragenden Felsnadeln. Diese atemberaubende Landschaft lädt zzu einem Fotoshooting der besonderen Art ein. Anschließend erklimmen wir die

zur

Passhöhe auf 2360 m. Hinter der Passhöhe warten alle auf der Terrasse eines Réfuge Napoléon, wo wir uns in geselliger Runde eine kleine Pause

gönnen, bevor es weiter zu dem Klassiker der Tour de France geht. Über den Col de Lautaret, der auf 2058 Metern liegt geht es weiter in Richtung Alpe d'Huez. Das Wetter spielt leider nicht mehr mit. Starker Regen hat eingesetzt. Die neuen Dunlop SP Fast Response zeigen nun ihre Künste auf regennasser Fahrbahn. Der Grip dieser Touringreifen ist erstaunlich. Wir biegen ab auf die D211 in Richtung Alpe d'Huez. Die 13 km lange Passstraße führt zu einem modernen Wintersportort, der etwa 5 km oberhalb des alten Ortes Huez errichtet wurde. Die Straße ist vorzüglich ausgebaut, sehr breit und mit einem guten Belag.

Auf 760 Metern

beginnt der Aufstieg mit 21 Kehren, die es zu bewältigen gilt, bis man am Ziel auf 1850 Metern ankommt. Die Namen der Etappensieger sind in den 21 Kehren aufgelistet, beginnend mit dem ersten Sieger in der 21. Kehre. Da es seit Lance Armstrongs Sieg 2001 mehr Gewinner als Kehren gibt, hat man begonnen, die Schilder doppelt zu beschriften. Kehre 21 ist nun Fausto Coppi und Lance Armstrong gewidmet. Auf 13.8 km legt man 1100 Meter Höhenunterschied mit einer durchschnittlichen Steigung von 8%. Ich hole alles aus dem V8 heraus. Die Felswände schallen das Bollern des V8 vehement zurück. Serpentine anbremsen, mit Zwischengas in den 2. Gang und vor der Kehre wieder voll aufs Gas, schalten bei 5000 Umdrehungen, ab in den 3. Nach 42 mal Schalten braust der V8 in Alpe d'Huez ins Ziel. Nun kann man sich entscheiden, ob man nun über die gut ausgebaute Straße wieder nach unten fährt oder den spannenden Abstieg über den Col de Sarenne wählt. Das Schild, das am Beginn des Passes steht, sagt alles. Im Laufschritt fahren wir über

Pastorale. Mehr als 30 km/h sind definitiv nicht drin. Das Wetter trägt zur einer speziellen Stimmung bei. Man fühlt sich, als wäre am Ende der Welt. Die Landschaft wird überschattet von fast schwarzen Wolken und heftigem Regen gemischt mit Graupel. Die Aussichten auf die Alpen sind grandios.

eine gigantische Staumauer und biegen nun ab zum Skiort les Deux Alpes. Wir parken die Autos in der Garage auf 1800 Meter und machen es uns in der Hotelbar bequem Wir besprechen die letzte und längste Etappe dieser Tour und entscheiden uns, früh aufzubrechen.

Porsche 3.2, BMW z4 und 130i, Mazda MX-5, Fiat 128, Audi 80 Cabrio und mein V8 verlassen früh morgens die Tiefgarage in les Deux Alpes. Wir versammeln uns unten im Dorf und starten auf unsere letzte Etappe mit einer Länge von 320 Kilometern. Wir fahren zurück zum Col de Lautaret wo wir links auf die D902 abbiegen. Wir sind nun wieder auf der Route des Grandes Alpes in Richtung Valloire unterwegs und beginnen den Aufstieg zu dem fünfhöchsten Pass der Alpen,

landschaftlich eine Wucht ist. Der Col du Galibier liegt auf 2642 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel. Oben kann man bei gutem Wetter am Horizont den Mont-Blanc sehen. Bei 4 Grad Celsius steigen wir oben auf der Passhöhe aus unseren Autos. Zeit für ein Gruppenbild mit dem tollen Straßenschild.

Der Kurventanz über die Nordrampe, durch Valloire hindurch, weiter über den Col de Télégraphe in Richtung Valloire begeistert die Fahrer. In St. Michel de Maurienne tanken wir unsere Wagen auf und kaufen für unser Picknick am Mittag beim örtlichen Bäcker und Metzger ein. Die ersten Sonnenstrahlen kämpfen sich durch den bedeckten Himmel. Der Col d'Iséran, ist nach dem Col de la Bonnette, der zweithöchste Pass, aber sicherlich der interessanteste. Hut ab

für die französischen Straßenbauer. Die Trasse des 74 Kilometer langen Passes ist schlichtweg allererste Sahne. Die Mischung aus runden, schnell gefahrenen Kehren und nicht zu engen Serpentinen erhalten von uns eine Eins. Es ist mal wieder an der Zeit, die Leistung des MG voll auszunutzen. Auf 2000 Meter spüre ich, wie das souveräne 3.5 Liter Aggregat langsam an Leistung verliert. Die Luft wird dünner und ich verlangsame das Tempo. Ringsherum sieht man gewaltige Felswände – dieser Pass entführt uns in die Welt des Hochgebirges. Die Passhöhe liegt auf 2770 Meter. Es ist sehr viel Los. Die Parkplätze sind überfüllt. Wir entscheiden uns für eine sofortige Weiterfahrt. Die Abfahrt nach Val d'Isére ist erneut ein Kurvenfest. Dieser Pass ist ein grandioses Erlebnis und darf auf keiner Alpentour in Frankreich fehlen. Am Barrage de Tignes vorbei –

beginnen wir die Auffahrt zum Cormet de Roselend. Mit einer Maximal Steigung von 12 % geht es steil bergauf auf 1968 Meter. 3 Kilometer hinter der Passhöhe hat man eine wunderbare Sicht auf den Lac de Roselend. Nach dem Col de Meraillet und dem Col des Saisies, gelangen wir zum Col des Aravis. Der Pass mit seinen 1486 Metern und insgesamt 19 Kehren ist der letzte Pass des Tages. Am frühen Nachmittag treffen wir erschöpft in La Clusaz ein.

Teilnehmer ist begeistert von der Alpentour 2013 und freut sich auf die Tour 2014. In den Wintermonaten beginnt die Planung der nächsten Tour – Ideen habe ich schon ein Menge gesammelt. Um 5 Uhr morgens treten MG, Jeff und ich die Heimreise an. Nach 5 Tagen, 2300 Kilometern und 21 Pässen, überqueren wir am frühen Nachmittag die luxemburgische Grenze. Die Fahrleistungen, der Sound und die Zuverlässigkeit des MGB GT V8 haben alle Teilnehmer begeistert!

MG B GT V8

Der MG B war jahrzehnteübergreifend Inbegriff für den klassischen britischen Roadster.

Das etwas später nachgereichte Coupé ist kaum weniger kultig und läuft mit dem relativ kurz gebauten V8 zur Höchstform auf.

Wer an englische Klassiker denkt, sieht sich häufig vor dem geistigen Auge in einer steifen Brise der Sonne entgegenfahren. Für kleine Roadster waren die britischen Autohersteller genauso bekannt wie beliebt. Aber es geht auch zweitürig-geschlossen. Drei Jahre nachdem die seinerzeit zur British Motor Corporation gehörende Traditionsschmiede MG im Jahr 1962 einen der berühmtesten Roadster, den B, auf die Straße gelassen hatte, schob sie das gleichnamige Coupé mit dem Zusatz "GT" hinterher. Mit 1,8 Litern Hubraum und etwas mehr als 80 PS war das das heckgetriebene Coupé zwar nicht untermotorisiert, allerdings auch nicht aufregend .

Bereits zwei Jahre später wurde mit dem MG C Abhilfe geschaffen; der nämlich trug einen schicken Reihensechszylinder unter der Haube und war sowohl auf der Piste wie auch über Land ein schwer einzuholender und erst recht kaum überholbarer Kandidat. Das Gewicht auf der Vorderachse indes war Gift für die Fahreigenschaften. Erst 1973 entschieden sich die Verantwortlichen

dafür,

dem

hübschen

Shootingbrake-Entwurf den konzernbekannten 3,5 Liter großen Achtzylinder mit immerhin 101 kW/137 PS zu implantieren. Der hatte nicht nur mehr Dampf, sondern war deutlich leichter. Er unterbot gar den immer noch bestellbaren

Vierzylinder, weil er aus Aluminium gefertigt war. Nach rund vierzig Jahren hat der Insulaner kein bisschen Attraktivität verloren und ist gern gesehener Gast auf Oldtimer-Treffen. Er beweist, dass nicht nur Amis gut sind für lupenreinen V8-Genuss. Profis wissen natürlich, dass der Dreieinhalber ein Buick-Gewächs ist. Und das macht sich richtig gut in der britischen Verpackung; auf einen kurzen Schlüsseldreh folgt prompt die akustische Einlage mit klarer Basslastigkeit. Was im ersten Moment etwas befremdlich wirkt in diesem kleinen Auto, sorgt einen Wimpernschlag später für Dauergrinsen. Der GT schiebt so bullig aus dem Drehzahlkeller heraus, dass man geneigt ist, in die technischen Daten anno 1973 zu schauen.

Demnach vergehen nur 8,8 Sekunden bis 100 km/h – da muss der Vertreter-Passat mit TDI auf der Vorderachse also passen. Unser Exemplar trägt das Lenkrad originalerweise rechts (der V8 war nie für den kontinentalen Markt vorgesehen), was dem Zweitürer durchaus gut zu Gesicht steht. Umso wichtiger, dass die vier Vorwärtsgänge sauber einrasten. Wer von einem englischen Auto allerdings Schweizer Präzision erwartet, ist an der falschen Adresse – wo bliebe dann der Charme? Man muss auch nicht quer um jede Kurve driften.

Starrachse und Blattfedern waren damals übliches Rüstzeug, um schlechten Straßen wie auch Windungen zu begegnen. Eine stramme Abstimmung untermauert den sportiven Einschlag.

Dass die betagte Fuhre beim Überfahren von Rumpelstrecken ein bisschen knarzt, gehört zum Oldtimer-Leben. Auf Servolenkung pfeift der V8 GT. Man sollte sich beim Kauf bewusst sein, dass die Modellbezeichnung in diesem Fall nicht Programm ist. Gran Turismo-Charakter kommt wohl kaum auf, wenn Ingenieure einem Roadster ein geschlossenes Dach verpassen.

Und bitte kein Gesicht ziehen, falls die Knie das Lenkrad beim Einstieg touchieren. Das passiert quasi bei jeder Körpergröße. Der direkte Blick auf zwei traditionelle Rundskalen samt Drehzahlmesser und Tacho machen alles wieder gut. Statt Holz gibt es übrigens ein paar verstreute Schalter, die den Blick mindestens genauso lange fesseln. Von intuitiver Bedienung und Ergonomie wollte vor vier Jahrzehnten kein Konstrukteur etwas wissen, schon gar nicht in Großbritannien. So muss man etwas experimentieren, um aller Funktionen Herr zu werden auch wenn es nicht viele gibt. Lüftung und Heizung zu steuern, ist eine mittlere Herausforderung, aber mit ein paar Kniffen abgehandelt. Spaltmaß-Fetischisten werden mit englischen Marken eher nicht warm, für so etwas hatte man auf der Insel wenig übrig.

Dennoch geht der Klassiker mit dem Buchstaben "B" als zuverlässig und alltagstauglich durch, wenn man sich mit dem Platzangebot arrangieren kann. Was der menschlichen Fracht fehlt, kommt indes dem Gepäckraum zugute, der so manchen Hartschalenkoffer schluckt. Für

weitere Strecken im GT muss man jedoch der Typ sein, auch wenn das herrlich klingende V8Triebwerk aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach durchhält.

Augen auf heißt es natürlich auch in Sachen Korrosion: Schweller, hintere Kotflügel und Lampen sind anfällig. Besser also ein solides Fahrzeug erwerben, das in der Anschaffung etwas mehr kostet als eine Baustelle, denn Karosserieteile sind nicht günstig. Für eine ordentliche V8-Version in fittem, aber nicht perfektem Zustand werden ohne Probleme zwischen 12.000 und 20.000 Euro aufgerufen. Und ist sind jeden Cent wert.
