Congratulations to our 36th Annual Spring Ball honorees, Michael L. Schwartz, MD, recipient of the Sister Joseph Rita Award for Medical Excellence, and Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland County, recipient of the Good Samaritan Hospital Medal of Honor. This year, we also proudly introduce The Good Samaritan Hospital Community Service Award, sponsored by Webster Bank, N.A. and awarded posthumously to Harold J. Peterson, Chair of our Foundation from 2015 to 2022.

Dr. Michael Schwartz, Chief of Surgical Services, has a deep understanding of today’s opportunities in healthcare and broad vision for the future of surgery. He is innovative, experienced, skilled and always committed to providing the highest possible quality of care.

Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland County is Rockland’s largest non-pro t ambulance service. Hatzoloh, staffed exclusively by volunteers, provides excellent pre-hospital emergency medical care and transportation to the Emergency Department. They were invaluable allies in our community efforts during COVID and remain our esteemed healthcare partners.

Our inaugural Good Samaritan Hospital Community Service Award recipient, Harold J. Peterson, led our Foundation Board with intelligence, common sense, generosity and compassion. Harold was a dear friend to the hospital and a respected member of Rockland’s non-pro t community. When I think of Harold, I recall how he demonstrated that kindness has no boundaries.

Together, with role models like our honorees and friends like you, Good Samaritan provides advanced care close to home. Tonight’s proceeds will bene t the Surgical Services Department, including the construction of a Hybrid Operating Room. The Hybrid OR is a workspace that integrates imaging equipment and multifunctional surgical tools, allowing clinical teams to diagnose and treat patients in a single location. It enables shorter recovery time, reduces length of patient stays and improves safety.

Welcome to Good Samaritan Hospital’s 36th Annual Spring Ball.

Congratulations to our honorees, Michael Schwartz, MD, and Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland County. Thanks to your contributions, our community is a stronger place to raise families, build careers and enjoy daily life.

Tonight, we introduce the inaugural Good Samaritan Community Service Award – given in memory of Harold J. Peterson. Harold was a respected colleague and dear friend to many in this room. He preceded me as chair of the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and, as your new chair, I am honored to continue his work.

The Foundation Board works with our hospital’s leaders and community members to raise funds that support the expansion and enhancement of facilities, equipment, technology and services at Good Samaritan. The Board’s purpose is to help our community understand that smart giving can ensure our hospital’s growth and provide nancial and personal bene ts to the giver.

When we think about the vast impact our hospital has on patients, the numbers are compelling. Last year alone, there were more than 40,000 visits to our Emergency Department and over 16,000 inpatient stays – each a life-changing opportunity.

Local access to advanced healthcare is more than a convenience. It saves and signi cantly improves the quality of lives. I believe that as community members, it is our collective responsibility to see to it that Good Samaritan continues to have nancial resources to help all of us live our healthiest lives.

MICHAEL LAWRENCE SCHWARTZ, MD, FACS

Recipient of the Sister Joseph Rita Award for Medical Excellence

Michael Schwartz, MD, is Chief of Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital. Previously, he was our Chief of Vascular Surgery. He has been a partner at Rockland Thoracic & Vascular Associates since 1995.

Dr. Schwartz earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida. He completed his residency in surgery at Montefiore Medical Center. After his surgery residency, he remained at Montefiore to complete a fellowship in vascular surgery.

His original articles have been published in nearly 20 journals and he has authored several textbook chapters. Dr. Schwartz has presented at over 50 conferences and national meetings.

Dr. Schwartz grew up in Old Tappan, New Jersey. After his education, he returned to the New York area to complete his residency and practice medicine. His fiancé, Jessica, works for the hospital’s Foundation and they live in Tuxedo Park. Dr. Schwartz has four children, Brian, Daniel, Adam and Hailey. Brian and his wife, Holly, have a son, Jackson. Daniel and his wife, Gigi, are expecting a daughter in the fall.

As Chief of Surgical Services, what do you look forward to for our hospital?

I’m very excited to start our general surgical residency program, slated to begin soon. This program will bring new educational opportunities to the hospital. The opportunity for our department to teach young aspiring surgeons will invigorate the entire staff. It will also help us recruit bright talent.

I am also eager to continue the expansion of Good Samaritan’s capabilities to be on the forefront of cutting-edge technologies appropriate for our community hospital. The expansion of our robotics program and growth of our cardiovascular programs with the construction of the Hybrid OR are two examples of this.

What do you like best about practicing at Good Samaritan?

It is great to work with doctors and nurses who are so accomplished. I feel we truly deliver university quality care, but in a comfortable community hospital setting. We all choose to practice here because we want to be in our own community among neighbors. I enjoy the relationships

among the staff who I have worked with for decades, and I enjoy welcoming new staff who’ve come here to build careers. I’m honored that I’ve been trusted to lead our surgical staff.

Who have been the most influential people in your career?

My grandmother, Nettie, was an early force in my pursuit of medicine. When people ask why I went into medicine, I tell them that I didn’t have a choice. My grandma Nettie told me I had to. Funny thing is, I can’t imagine doing anything else – she had great insight!

My parents, Judi and Harvey, who have always been so proud of me, were supportive and loving parents. My brother, Mark, also a vascular surgeon, and my recently departed sister, Jill, who I miss dearly, were also in uential role models for me.

I was trained by a world-renowned vascular surgeon, Frank Veith. He taught me many things about vascular surgery.

However, it was my senior partners, Ken Steinglass, Mark Ginsburg, Lyall Gorenstein and Michael Trent, who really taught me how to be a vascular surgeon. They’re all fantastic surgeons and were great mentors to me as I was growing up in vascular surgery.

What makes you the proudest?

My greatest pride are my four children. Somehow, I was able to be heavily involved in raising them while juggling the demands of a young surgeon. As they were growing up, I adjusted my surgical schedule to allow me to run out and coach a Little League game or attend a dance recital. After the game or performance, I would speed back to the hospital to nish my surgical schedule. I’ve paid my share of speeding tickets.

I also am incredibly proud of my kids as adults and the partners they’ve chosen. Brian manages Uber Eats for Virginia and West Virginia, his wife, Holly, is a teacher and their toddler, Jackson, brings me endless joy. Daniel is an executive with Anji and his wife, Gigi, manages her father’s radiation oncology practice. Adam has just matched in a plastic surgery residency program. And my beautiful daughter Hailey is graduating from Pace University, where she's studying acting.

If you were to choose a career not related to medicine, what would it be?

Certainly, an airline pilot. I have been an instrument-rated pilot for many years. There are many similarities between surgery and ying that are alluring. In both, I like the challenges of perfection and risk. There is never a “perfect” ight or a “perfect” surgery. I always walk away from a ight or an operation where I’ve learned something; something I can tweak to make myself better for the next time.

Your favorite things to do when not working?

I love spending time with my family. I enjoy traveling and, since my children and parents are scattered across the country, I do a lot of it! I also like to relax and read. When I’m not doing that, Jess and I can be found punching holes in the sky ying around the area and playing terrible golf.

HATZOLOH EMS OF ROCKLAND COUNTY

Recipient of the Good Samaritan Hospital Medal of Honor

Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland County – the largest non-pro t volunteer ambulance service in the county – is here for our community 24/7/365. Since the late 1970s, they have served the region, saving lives and minimizing pain and suffering for individuals experiencing emergency illness and traumatic injury.

More than 200 volunteers staff Hatzoloh. With teams of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMT) and Paramedics, they provide pre-hospital emergency medical treatment and transport, regardless of a patient’s race, religion, ethnicity or ability to pay.

Hatzoloh responds to over 15,000 requests for emergency assistance yearly. Approximately half of the patients who require hospital care are brought to Good Samaritan’s Emergency Department.

More than 25 volunteer dispatchers coordinate Hatzoloh’s entire operation with 18 ambulances stationed at locations throughout the 200 square miles of Rockland County. At any given moment, Hatzoloh responders willingly put their lives on pause to respond to emergencies, often leaving their families, jobs, children and warm beds to save a life.

Here, Rabbi Yosef C. Golding, CEO of Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland County, provides insights into the ambulance service and its commitment to our community.

What training do your responders receive?

The backbone of Hatzoloh, the cadre of EMTs, completes a rigorous New York State Department of Health training program in emergency medical care, and recerti es every three years. Every EMT carries primary rst-aid kits, oxygen and automatic de brillators.

Paramedics receive extensive training in Advanced Life Support and bring the ER to the patient with their drug bags, EKG monitors and other advanced medical tools.

At Hatzoloh, we go above and beyond city and state requirements for training, physician review and oversight, and patient follow up. We continuously reinforce skills through ongoing classes to keep the staff current, and we provide additional hands-on training.

Hatzoloh’s medical doctors work with our volunteers in the eld. Our doctors are also available for immediate, on-call guidance and recommendations as needed.

Additionally, Hatzoloh’s directors review responses and mentor each volunteer monthly. All of Hatzoloh's dispatchers also go through rigorous ongoing training and continuous quality control.

Hatzoloh teams are known to be among the most dedicated volunteers in the county. To what do you attribute their devotion?

As Judaism considers the saving of one life sacrosanct, it is no wonder there are so many altruistic volunteers who give up the comforts of their warm beds, time with their families at the dinner table, hours at their jobs and even Passover seders to volunteer for Hatzoloh.

The Code of Jewish Law considers the saving of one life as if one saved an entire world. Imagine Hatzoloh saving hundreds each month!

That’s why Sabbath observant Hatzoloh members “desecrate” the Sabbath on a weekly basis, as it is not desecration at all, but rather, sancti cation.

What have been some of Hatzoloh’s recent successes in Rockland County?

Hatzoloh members recently received great attention for several mid- ight life-saving heroics that were caught on camera.

Additionally, several Hatzoloh members, together with two other heroes, jumped into a halffrozen Lake Suzanne to rescue a 9-year-old boy who wandered onto the ice to retrieve a ball, not realizing that the ice was not solid.

But truth-be-told, every member is a hero and every call is heroic, whether midday or midnight, Sabbath, holidays … whenever people need us.

How would you describe your partnership with Good Samaritan Hospital?

Hatzoloh’s relationship with Good Samaritan Hospital is as great as can be imagined. Our ambulances arrive at the Good Sam Emergency Department all day and all night. In fact, while this question is being answered, three of our ambulances are en route to Good Samaritan with patients from a motor vehicle accident.

At Hatzoloh, we join the general community in being greatly appreciative of Good Samaritan Hospital’s commitment to accommodate all, including the Jewish Orthodox community.

Harold lived a life of dedicated service to his family, community and country. He was a husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend, military veteran, volunteer, public servant, businessman, humanitarian and follower of Christ.

As one of the most respected people in Rockland County, he exempli ed how acts of doing good for others make the community better for everyone.

Good Samaritan Hospital is fortunate to have bene tted from Harold’s leadership as chair of its Foundation from 2015 to 2022, and previously, as a member of the Board. During his tenure as chair, the Foundation raised over $6.3 million to support the hospital’s investments in facilities, equipment and technology, as well as innovative programs and services.

Rockland’s non-pro t community as a whole is stronger because of Harold. In addition to Good Samaritan, a few of the organizations that bene tted from his service include the Arthritis Foundation, Monte ore Nyack Hospital, United Hospice, Child Care Resources of Rockland, Meals on Wheels Rockland, St. Thomas Aquinas College and The Arc of Rockland.

The Community Service Award celebrates Harold’s legacy of service and leadership. Harold was a longtime champion for the hospital, and he was a generous role model to always do our best to make our community better, stronger and safer for everyone who lives here. We will forever cherish his gift of friendship.

Harold will forever be remembered for his unwavering support for non-profit organizations in Rockland County. Through his committment to The Arc Rockland, he was an outspoken advocate for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.

Harold’s insight, kindness, sense of humor and friendship will be remembered by those fortunate enough to have known and worked with him.

Harold’s impact at The Arc Rockland is immeasurable.

• For over 3 decades, he served on either the Chapter or Foundation Board of Directors; serving as President of each for many terms.

• Harold’s legacy included fostering greater collaboration between Arc and Rockland’s business community and leaders.

• He was a founding member of The Arc’s major fundraising events: A Taste of Rockland and the Golf Classic.
