In my research of climbing ivy, I found it particularly interesting how the ivy can climb up almost any surface and envelop a building. Particularly interested in the tendrils that allowed for the ivy to stick to the surface and grow vertically. Using my observations, I developed a structure that mimicked that of the ivy as a structure that could grow along a landscape. The structure can be universally placed to intervene in the landscape and create an experience for both human and animal. Utilizing carbon fiber weaving to create shading but also allow for birds and insects to inhabit the small crevasses. Geothermal wells are programmed into the piping and tendril-like footings to circulate fluid to capture the ground’s heat and distribute it into the spaces. As a landscape intervention, this structure captures the art of sustainable design, which could lead to more advances in technology to provide buildings with net-positive energy programs.

Site Analysis // Arch 301 / Brandon Schoo

McFarland Park, northeast of Iowa State University, is the site assigned for this project. Upon my initial visit, I was interested in the park’s ecological duality between the open prairie fields and dense forests, but also the site’s focal lake that brings it all together. As a studio, my peers and I crafted our site model for projections of our drawings. With my drawings, I decided to emulate the site’s ecology by using pictures composed of the different environments on site. Another investigation I studied was rainwater drainage using a rhino program. Not only did this create a drawing similar to the climbing ivy, but also learning about the site’s drainage. Through this study, I found where the water is most likely to accumulate, which shows points of the park where flooding is most common. With these studies, I concluded that if I were to intervene on the site, I would rather a low flooding site in the prairie environment. | Page 7 |
