PRIMARY PROSPECTUS 2026

Page 1

When you step into the Primary School at The British School of Brussels, the first thing you notice is the energy – children buzzing with curiosity, the sound of laughter echoing in the corridors, teachers guiding and questioning rather than simply instructing. It’s a place alive with the sound of learning.

At BSB, those early years from ages one to eleven are seen as the most powerful time of discovery. Every activity – whether it’s exploring the forest, solving a problem together, creating art, or telling stories – is shaped around each child’s natural curiosity and their individual path of growth. Expert teachers plan with care and imagination, building learning that is hands‑on, challenging, and full of wonder.

But what truly sets BSB apart is the way children’s voices are valued. Here, confidence and character matter just as much as academic progress. We want every child to feel proud of who they are, aware of their unique strengths, and inspired to make a difference – in their classroom, in their friendships, and in the wider world.

Every child’s journey looks a little different, and we embrace that. Our teachers and support staff work closely together to understand what each child needs to thrive, whether that’s a little extra challenge, support, or simply someone who knows them well enough to spot when they need encouragement. Parents often tell us that it’s this personal touch – the sense of belonging – that makes BSB feel like home.

With respect,

Primary At BSB

Walk into any Primary classroom at The British School of Brussels and you’ll find children absorbed in the moment – hands covered in paint, eyes fixed on a science experiment, or deep in conversation as they plan their next idea. Learning here feels purposeful, joyful, and alive.

Our Primary School brings together children aged 1–11 through three closely connected phases –Early Years, Lower Primary, and Upper Primary Each stage builds naturally on the last, blending play, inquiry, and challenge to help children grow in confidence and independence.

In the Early Years (ages 1–5), each child is at the centre of their own learning. Classrooms are playful and encourage children to explore and ask questions. Here, your child can hone language skills and physical development, discover more about the world, and use their imagination. Skilled teachers support children by following their interests, and the environment is calm and caring, helping children feel safe as they move from home to school.

As children move into Lower Primary (approximately ages 3–7), an active and playful experience for children is maintained, while deepening core skills in literacy and numeracy. In thematic “Units of Discovery”, learning is designed to be meaningful and connected. Teachers encourage curiosity, guiding students to ask questions, test ideas, and begin taking responsibility for their own learning.

By Upper Primary (ages 7–11), students are ready to think more critically and tackle complex challenges. Lessons build fluency in written and spoken English, deepen mathematical reasoning, and connect classroom learning with real world contexts. Alongside these fundamentals sits a focus on collaboration, creativity, and emotional growth – because we know that true confidence comes from feeling both capable and cared for.

Our curriculum has firm foundations in the English National Curriculum but is thoughtfully adapted to our international community. We weave in Belgian culture, global perspectives, and strong language learning to create something uniquely BSB – an education rooted in British excellence, enriched by an international outlook, and shaped by values that help children feel at home in the world.

As a parent, you can expect your child to be truly known, valued, and encouraged to shine at BSB. Our teachers don’t simply deliver lessons; they create learning journeys shaped around each child’s curiosity and sense of wonder. Every morning begins with familiar faces and friendly hellos as children hang up their jackets and catch up with friends before the day unfolds. They move through a rhythm that feels both safe and exciting – choosing a story to read, tending to plants in the garden, or teaming up on a hands‑on project with a visiting expert. Whether exploring the forest, chatting in two languages, or proudly sharing their work, our children grow in confidence, connection, and joy every single day.

Teaching and Learning at BSB

At BSB, great teaching starts with great relationships. Our teachers know their pupils – not just their strengths in class, but their personalities, interests, and aspirations. This personal connection forms the foundation for learning that is engaging, challenging, and meaningful.

Across the school, we’ve developed a shared approach to teaching that blends research driven practice with the creativity and flexibility that make our classrooms special. When you walk into a Primary classroom, you’ll see:

• A strong sense of belonging. Teachers greet every child by name and celebrate the languages, cultures, and experiences that make up our rich community.

• Curiosity in action. Lessons invite children to ask big questions, explore ideas, and take intellectual risks. Learning is interactive, discussion rich, and built around “why” rather than “what”.

• Nurturing challenge. We believe children learn best when they’re stretched just beyond their comfort zone, supported by teachers who know when to encourage and when to step back.

• Inquiry and reflection. Teachers plan with intention – drawing on educational research and collaborative reflection – to ensure each learning experience leads somewhere meaningful.

• Constructive feedback. Learning conversations and formative assessments help children understand not just where they are, but where they’re going next.

• Ownership and voice. Students are encouraged to make decisions, share opinions, and take responsibility for their learning, developing independence and confidence over time.

• Respectful learning spaces: Our classrooms are thoughtfully designed to inspire curiosity and support effective learning, upholding the BSB Respect Charter by emphasising kindness, focus, and mutual respect.

Technology is used thoughtfully and has an integrated role. From the earliest years, children explore digital creativity and safe, responsible online behaviours. In Lower Primary, technology is used mainly to document learning, support early skills, and encourage exploration. By the Upper Primary years, iPads and interactive tools enhance learning, enabling collaboration, inquiry, and innovation.

Our teachers see every lesson as an opportunity to inspire. Whether it’s a traditional literacy lesson or an outdoor “Learning without Walls” adventure, what matters most is engagement – children who feel empowered to learn, question, and create.

English

At BSB, English is much more than a subject – it’s the foundation for imagination, expression, and connection. Step into any classroom and you’ll see children lost in a story, performing a poem, or debating an idea – all ways of helping them find and refine their voice.

We take a ‘whole book’ approach to reading, meaning children live inside stories rather than skimming their surface. Vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and creativity are all explored through rich, inspiring texts. Reading becomes something to savour, not to complete.

This love of reading runs through the school. Our teachers partner closely with the Open University to strengthen our Reading for Pleasure culture. Books are seen not just as lessons, but as lifelong companions. By the time children leave Primary, they are confident writers and articulate speakers who see language as a tool for both learning and joy.

Languages

Language learning at BSB opens doors – not only to communication, but to connection with different cultures and perspectives. Children learn that every language offers a new way to see the world.

From the earliest years, French is introduced through play, songs, and stories. Lessons are fun and immersive, helping even the youngest children pick up new words with natural ease. As children move into Upper Primary, Dutch is added, connecting learning to life beyond the school gates and to the culture of Belgium.

For those who speak French at home or are likely to study in French later, our specialist bilingual classes offer a blend of English and French instruction led by native speaking teachers. This dual language approach allows children to grow as confident, balanced bilinguals who can move smoothly between the two languages – a true advantage for life beyond Primary.

Language lessons at BSB are designed to be inclusive and inspiring, whether a child is learning their first new words in French or mastering advanced vocabulary as a native Dutch speaker. It’s about nurturing curiosity and confidence, one conversation at a time.

Maths

Maths at BSB is rooted in exploration and understanding, not memorisation. Teachers encourage children to see patterns, test ideas, and think like young mathematicians.

We use the White Rose Maths mastery approach, which helps children build deep understanding of concepts before moving forward. Lessons often involve discussion, hands on problem solving, and puzzles that stretch thinking while keeping learning fun. You might see a class using counters and cubes to explore number patterns, or older children tackling open ended challenges that demand teamwork and creativity.

Every child learns at their own pace. There is no rigid streaming in Primary. Instead, our approach keeps learning flexible – so that children can gain confidence, be challenged appropriately, and always feel a sense of success. The goal is not just to solve a problem, but to enjoy the process of discovery.

Maths at BSB helps children see beauty in numbers, logic in patterns, and excitement in challenge – all of which prepare them not just for exams, but for life.

Music

Music fills the air at BSB. Whether it’s children singing in the Early Years, playing instruments in the Upper Primary Hall, or performing in one of our choirs, music is a living language within our school.

From age one, students discover rhythm and sound through playful songs, rhymes, and percussion. As they grow, they move into structured lessons that develop listening, rhythm, and composition skills – while keeping creativity and joy at the centre.

By Upper Primary, many students learn instruments and perform as part of ensembles, orchestras, or bands. These shared musical experiences build confidence, discipline, and collaboration – and they create memories that last far beyond the school years.

Music at BSB isn’t just a subject. It’s a way for children to express themselves, connect, and find their voice – together.

Physical Education (PE) and Sport

In Primary PE, we believe movement isn’t only about being active – it’s about growing strong, confident, and resilient. From the very first years, physical development sits at the heart of what we do.

In the Early Years and Lower Primary, our PE team works hand in hand with class teachers to develop coordination, balance, and strength. These are the building blocks for writing, focus, and well being – and they’re taught through joyful, active play.

By Upper Primary, children develop skill and confidence through structured sports sessions, swimming, gymnastics, and dance. Lessons go beyond technique: they teach teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. Every child swims in our 25m indoor pool and trains in our professional facilities, gaining skills for both body and mind.

PE at BSB is about every child, not just the sporty ones. We nurture enjoyment, encourage participation, and celebrate progress – helping every pupil see themselves as capable, healthy, and strong.

Learning without Walls empowers children to explore, create, and grow through handson experiences in the natural world.

Outdoor Learning

Beyond the classroom, one of our most cherished learning spaces is The Glade, our on campus forest classroom, where lessons take place outdoors. Here, children immerse themselves in ecosystems, build shelters, and create nature inspired art, transforming inquiry into hands on adventure.

The BSB “Learning without Walls” programme integrates outdoor learning throughout the curriculum, connecting each topic with the natural world. Whether studying energy by constructing solar panels or exploring creativity through forest art, children learn by doing, developing confidence and curiosity in the open air.

Every child at BSB Primary enjoys nature based lessons that complement their classroom learning. Science comes alive when children build waterproof shelters, art flourishes through sculpture inspired by nature, and sustainability is explored through direct engagement with renewable energy.

Our specialist outdoor teachers encourage curiosity, environmental awareness, and problem solving in every session. Children collaborate, challenge themselves physically and creatively, and learn to view the world around them as a living classroom.

Trips and Residential Experiences

At BSB, we believe learning comes alive when the world itself becomes the classroom. From their earliest days, our youngest learners step beyond the school gates to embark on local adventures that ignite their curiosity.

A walk to the neighbourhood park gives them a hands on encounter with the changing seasons and local wildlife. Visits to nearby museums bring history and art to life – whether exploring dinosaurs, painting, or ancient artefacts – while outings to the zoo offer up close experiences with animals they’ve read about in class. Sometimes, children visit the local bakery to see bread being made or take a trip to the post office to learn about how mail is sent and received. These excursions show that learning happens everywhere and help pupils connect classroom topics to the vibrant world around them.

As children move into Primary, they begin with day trips around Belgium, gradually building a sense of independence and exploration. From Year 3 onwards, each child participates in a residential trip, which quickly becomes a highlight of their educational journey. Younger pupils enjoy shorter stays close to home, while older children progress to regional residentials that may feature outdoor centres, cultural visits, and activities focused on team building. Multi day journeys across Belgium and nearby Europe provide opportunities for growth in resilience, collaboration, and confidence.

Digital Learning and Technology

Technology at BSB is a tool for creativity, collaboration, and problem solving. We teach children to be thinkers, not just users.

In Lower Primary, students have access to iPads and laptops, mainly for their weekly computing lessons. Technology is used mainly to document learning, support early skills, and encourage exploration, e.g. through tools like online learning journals and age appropriate apps for phonics, numeracy, and storytelling.

Digital activities are short, guided, and hands on, reinforcing core curriculum goals while introducing basic concepts such as taking photos, simple coding play, and talking about being kind and safe online.

In Upper Primary, each child has their own device – iPads for Year 3 and laptops in Years 4 to 6 – which enables regular use of technology for research, presentations, collaborative projects, and creative outputs such as videos, animations, and multimedia books that link to inquiry based “Units of Discovery”.

Dedicated computer science provision covers coding (often via block based platforms), designing and creating digital artefacts (games, animations, multimedia), and confident use of end‑user software, building computational thinking and problem solving.

This commitment to experiential learning continues in Upper Primary, where children spend several days away with their year group, typically for three to five nights. Off site trips and residentials are designed to immerse pupils in new experiences, nurturing a genuine appreciation for the wider world. All curricular trips, including residentials up to the end of Year 9, are included in the annual school fees, ensuring access for every pupil.

Parents frequently share how these adventures transform their children, who return home more confident, independent, and filled with inspiring stories. For us, this is education at its finest: unforgettable learning that shapes both hearts and minds.

Across Primary, lessons in Computer Science teach coding, design, and digital responsibility, helping students explore how technology shapes the world – and how they can use it wisely. Our approach is guided by the principle that technology should serve curiosity and creativity, never replace them.

The emphasis is on developing responsible digital citizens who can navigate technology safely and ethically, not just on learning tools or apps.

Enrichment at BSB

At BSB, learning doesn’t stop when the school day ends – it simply changes shape. Our Enrichment Programme opens doors to more than 200 clubs and activities across sport, music, art, science, wellbeing, and creativity.

For younger children, after school care is calm, structured, and filled with gentle opportunities to play, create, and relax. As children move through Primary, the range of opportunities grows – from football and dance to eco club, cooking, coding, drama, and choir. Each activity is led by staff who bring enthusiasm and expertise, helping every child discover a new interest or passion.

Enrichment can help children discover interests and abilities they did not previously know they had. A quiet child might find their confidence on stage; another might discover the joy of teamwork or creativity in an art club. Our programme is designed to promote the development of heart, mind, and body, ensuring that each child concludes the school day with lasting curiosity, enthusiasm, and a strong sense of purpose.
