Yearbook 2015 2016

Patron’s Message 2015-2016 has been another busy and productive year for BSA. As well as continuing to provide a high quality British education to a growing number of students and preparing for the school inspection in February, the school community managed to organise a number of successful events and extra-curricular activities. The highlights for me were the Friends of School Gala dinner in October, the school choir’s participation in the annual El Alamein commemoration, and the Prep School’s excellent production of Treasure Island.

I shall be leaving Alexandria for a new posting in the summer, but will always have fond memories of the British School. It has been a pleasure working with the staff, students and parents of BSA and I wish all members of the school community the very best for the future.

Chair of Governors Foreword I am very proud of the recognition The British School has gained in developing compassionate and culturally aware global citizens, and positively contributing to the future of Alexandria and the wider region.

One of the major milestones of this academic year was The Independent Schools Inspectorate Report, based on the first external evaluation of its kind in the school’s -30 year history. The report is a testament to how far the school has come in terms of providing a broad education of the highest standards, underpinned by outstanding teaching. It is also a reflection of the renewed partnership consolidated in recent years across the school community – students, staff, governors and parents – united by a common belief that education remains the most powerful instrument to positively change the world around us.

As Chair of Governors I am particularly proud of the report’s recognition of the school’s capacity “to develop caring, compassionate, respectful global citizens”. This is at the core of The British School, Alexandria: the conviction that the aim of education is, above all, the knowledge and application of values. Today, more than at any other time in our global history, it is essential that we equip the generation of today with those transferable, life skills required for active participation and leadership in economic, social, and public life.

In looking forward, the report provides a solid basis on which to build the next phase of The British School, and the school’s management is very well-positioned and equipped to lead the challenge of moving our education provision to continued levels of excellence. This journey will remain a shared endeavour across the community, and we count on our deepening partnership in working together in the pursuit of learning and change.

Principal’s Message As I reflect on my first year at the school, it is both an honour as well as a real pleasure to be the Principal of The British School, Alexandria. We have enthusiastic students, a great staff, committed governors and supportive parents in an established school with over 30 years of history in the ancient city of Alexandria.

It has been a busy but very successful year. We had our three yearly British Schools Overseas inspection carried out by ISI (the Independent Schools Inspectorate) in February/March. We were very pleased with the outcome. The Reporting Inspector in his verbal summing up described the British School of Alexandria as “Almost in every respect an excellent school”.

In particular, the report reflected our success in relation to our key aim of developing the whole person and providing a broad education which develops caring, compassionate, respectful global citizens, capable of contributing to making the world a better place. We are also proud of our students’ individual successes with five obtaining British Council awards for their outstanding examination results as well as a number who have achieved national sporting awards.

Other highlights have been our students’ participation in the memorial service at El Alamein, the school production of the musical Oliver, our students’ dedication to producing shoe boxes with gifts for disadvantaged students in Alexandria, our students’ participation in the Model United Nations Conference, Sports day, the Spring Bazaar and a whole range of trips and visits.

As the school continues to expand we also look forward to an exciting future. We have acquired another villa which we are currently refurbishing for Years 1 and 2 which we believe will give a better teaching and learning environment than the current Wilson building. We are also looking further ahead to replace the current 4 sites with either one or two larger sites with a new building and better facilities – we hope to be in a position to announce further details in the not too distant future.

Pre-Prep School It is hard to believe that our school year has come to a close.The end of the school year is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of our school and its students and acknowledge our committed faculty. It is a time to look back at our successes and begin making plans to build on those successes.

The students have had a remarkable year. This would not have been possible without our committed and enthusiastic faculty and staff who work tirelessly to provide a quality education for our children. I am honored to be their colleague.

“Thank you” is not enough for all the work they have done throughout the year.

Pre-Prep is a very special place where a sense of pride and family is evident in everything that we do! You feel it as you enter the door, walk across the garden or attend a class assembly or show. Our students have pride for their class and themselves. This shows through in the classroom, on the playground, on the stage and through all of our school as was reported on during our Inspection this year. We continue to strive to make it a better place for our children to grow and learn.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all of our BSA families. We could not have done it without you. “Thank you” for partnering with us in the education of our children.

A special thanks also to Ms Lama who continues to work extremely hard behind the scenes and helps to ensure the smooth day to day running of the school.

Prep School

Prep School It has been an enjoyable time in Prep this year with so many new things being accomplished by students and exciting trips having taken place.

One of the many highlights of this year was the Prep school performance in March when students performed Treasure Island. The cast were fantastic and students played their roles incredibly well, including the younger students in Prep who sang the songs beautifully.

It is the first year in Prep where we have managed to do an excursion abroad. Year 6 had a wonderful time in London at the PGL camp and also managed to see some famous sites around both London and Stratford-Upon Avon. Year 5 have also had two overnight trips and Year 3 had their school sleepover too. I am really proud of the way the students have grown to become independent learners and thinkers. I also hear lots of positive comments from the general public when on trips about how well the children behave and what good manners they have.

Prep school ended the academic year with a ‘Fun day’. Teachers and teaching assistants organised lots of fun activities for children to participate in and we had a big dish party on the hard-court and roof. An enjoyable day was had by all which celebrated the students’ successes.

Lastly I would like to thank our students here in Prep. The Year 6’s that are moving up to senior school will be missed and I wish them the very best of luck as they continue their journey throughout the school. Our students are a real credit to us and we are proud to teach such wonderful, unique individuals.Thank you to the parents for their ongoing support and cooperation and last but not least thank you to the wonderful Prep team; teachers, teaching assistants, security staff and cleaners that make the department a great place to work in and an excellent learning environment for the children.

Senior School The British School entered a new phase this year with Mr Blakebrough joining as Principal and myself appointed Head of Senior School, a position that I am delighted to have. The Senior School continues to flourish and this is due to the hard work of the students and all the staff, and also to the support of parents.

The Senior School is going from strength to strength with students having an increasing number of opportunities, both academic and extra-curricular. We have achieved great academic success this year with some of our Upper School students gaining awards from both Cambridge International and Edexcel examination boards for exceptional results.

We continue to encourage trips, enabling students to continue their learning beyond the classroom and to appreciate what Egypt has to offer.

A few of the highlights have been visiting the war site of El Alamein, diving in Marsa Shagra, the Nile cruise, the Pyramids trip and visiting various Alexandrian sites as part of our first Curriculum Enrichment Day. This year, we experienced a very entertaining musical production of Oliver and also musical lunch-time concerts. Reading Week featured staff taking on the personas of literary characters which caused much amusement for students and staff alike. Our students have also achieved great success in the ISAAA sports league. Our older students participated in a Model United Nations weekend which was very enjoyable and gave the participants the opportunity to debate with other students from Egypt.

It is extremely important that our very privileged students give something back to society and this year they have had the opportunity to help those less fortunate when visiting local orphanages and also when organising Bambi Day. I am always very pleased to see former students and it was delightful to welcome a number of them back to school when they came to reflect on their time at BSA and give advice to Upper School students. It was clear that the school still holds a very special place in their hearts!

I am sure that the coming academic year will be another exciting and rewarding one and look forward to the challenges it will bring.

Behind the scenes This year has seen lots of changes in the admin team. Mr Hafez has joined us as Head of Finance and I have taken on a new role as Head of Administration. The transition has been smooth due to the dedication of the entire admin and campus teams. We have undergone a successful inspection thanks to the hard work of all school staff as well as the students.

As the school is expanding, we have taken on a new site to accommodate Year 1 and Year 2 next year.

Renovation works are already underway so the site would be ready before next academic year.The admin team will be moving to the Wilson building.

I would like to thank the whole school community for their support on behalf of all the team!

This year has been another busy one with a number of developments and changes. Over the summer, the team took the responsibility of maintaining all areas of the school and preparing it for the new academic year. In the Christmas holidays the Euclid library was renovated as well as Heron garden.

A new fire escape was constructed in Aboul Ela campus during the second term for higher health and safety standards.

As usual, this year has been full of events. The Gala dinner, annual Bambi picnic, International day, Spring Bazaar and the sports day, as well as various school productions which were all successfully supported by our campus team.
