INTERNAL EXAMINATION INFORMATION 2021 Dear parents and students. This booklet contains information about how to access revision materials for each subject in preparation for the end of year examinations. After another very unusual year of schooling due to the pandemic, end of year exams in one way seem a little superfluous; however, although our main aim this year has been to see the students back in school and ensure that their wellbeing is looked after, we must also have gauges to see their progress, so these exams are important - however, we must also put them into perspective. We want students to take these seriously, but not become anxious about the challenge ahead.

Preparation is key to examination success, and this booklet is designed to help students to prepare. It contains ‘signposting’ to revision information about each subject. This is crucial training for our students - preparation for this year’s examinations is important, but even more important is the acquisition of a skills-set that will be used effectively when it comes to those final high-stakes external exams. Over the next few weeks, Form Tutors will be spending time with students evaluating the best methods for how to actually revise – from the planning of revision, creating the perfect revision environment, overcoming hurdles such as procrastination, and the techniques students can use to really focus their minds on their learning over the next few weeks. During this next month, teachers will also be giving less homework to students, in order to allow students to focus on their revision – this means that students should now be devoting at least the time they would be using to complete this homework to their revision. I do hope the students find this booklet helpful – a couple of important points to finish: firstly, for most subjects, your exercise book or Google Classroom should contain much, if not all, of the information you require so do use it; secondly, revision is about reminding yourself of information you may have let slip from your memory, or about going over work that you found really hard first time around – bear this in mind when completing the work. Finally, students should always remember that their teachers are always there to help them, and want them to succeed – therefore, make use of your teachers, and make sure that you go and see them if you are struggling with any area. I will not say Good Luck, because it is actually grit and determination that you need over the next few weeks! All the best for heaps of those!

INTERNAL EXAMINATION INFORMATION 2021 I am extremely proud to be Head of this Year group and they must be commended for how they have coped through the challenging times they have endured. More than anything, it is wonderful to see them being a team and supporting one another since being back at school. The lead up to their exams will be no different and it is important that students make use of their time with their peers to help test each others’ knowledge in a supportive environment leading up to exam season. The recent introduction of MELS has allowed us to offer students some valuable resources to help with their revision and we hope that they put them to good use. Creating a clear, realistic timetable, utilising

retrieval practise and dual coding techniques and balancing their time with activities away from their desks will be vital for them in the forthcoming weeks. Research has found that learning environments also play a crucial role in student success. Students who study in a positive learning environment have been shown to be more motivated, engaged, and have a higher overall learning ability. My advice to Year 8 would be to find a quiet space with a desk where they feel comfortable and where they have space to put their revision timetable and resources in a neat, organised fashion. In terms of listening to music whilst revising, research suggests that only listening to music that is soothing and relaxing (such as classical music) can help students to beat stress or anxiety while studying. Classical background music may improve focus on a task by providing motivation and improving mood but a quiet environment is also very effective. Most importantly, during this time, a reminder to students to look after themselves mentally and physically. Continuing their routine in terms of family dinners, exercise and other after school activities that are already part of their weekly schedule are just as important a part of effective revision as anything else. It’s all about balance. The best of luck for your forthcoming exams Year 8. In this next month use the resources you have been given to help you feel as comfortable and confident as possible going into your exams. If you are prepared you will do brilliantly, I have no doubt!

YEAR 8 TIMETABLE As you can see, most of the examinations will take place in the school’s Sports Hall, although there are other exams that will be taking place in the form rooms - both of these will take place under exam conditions to ensure that every student is able to concentrate and do their best. During revision periods, it is essential that students bring in the revision they need to keep their minds busy, so look ahead to the next few days. Chromebooks will be used for most exams - it is therefore crucial that students do ensure that they are fully powered when they come into school, and that they have working headphones.

ART REVISION Visual and Written Analysis and responses to a chosen artwork Yr 8 students have looked at various artworks throughout the year using the Formal Elements as a basis for image analysis, discussion and response.

The Art Exam: All students will have had an Artist Sheet provided to them.

Task 1: Students will need to identify areas of personal interest, linking these to the Formal Elements and produce 3-4 small scale drawings. Formal Elements of: LINE / SHAPE / TONE and FORM will be of particular focus for the actual drawings (visual responses) but all of the Formal Elements will be relevant.

Task 2: On the same Artist Sheet, the second activity will require the students to explain their visual drawings again relating these to the Formal Elements. There will be three boxes, pre-drawn, where the students will record their written explanations.

REVISION: All students will receive support in art lessons prior to the exam to consolidate and practice observational skills and written responses in preparation using an Artist Sheet similar to what they will use in the exam. All students throughout the year will have experienced using the Formal Elements in lessons.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY REVISION We aim to provide our KS3 students with a skills-based curriculum across all areas of Design & Technology. We have modified our curriculum heavily this year due to classroom and social distancing restrictions, however we still feel we have allowed Year 8 students to explore, question and experience valuable practical hands-on skills, theoretical based skills and techniques delivered through a range of small practical projects, where theory of manufacturing processes, materials and design skills are developed. A focus on Computer Aided Design and Manufacture within Product Design enables students to build industry standard skills and practises which are becoming ever more important in the world we live in. Students have learned how to use 2 main industry standard software packages, one of which can design remotely in 2D and the other a 3D CAD package. Students were able to send completed designs to our laser cutter, and then worked on packaging the products when completed.

Textiles: Students have been using their sewing skills creatively this year to produce their own small projects. Following industrial practices textiles has included use of CAD/CAM techniques in their curriculum. The curriculum has encouraged students to use both machine and hand sewing techniques to construct products. Revision includes: ● ● ● ● ●

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY REVISION Food and Nutrition Food Preparation and Nutrition equips learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food safety, nutrition and healthy eating. It encourages students to cook, enables them to make informed decisions about food and nutrition and allows them to acquire knowledge in order to be able to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life. ENGLISH REVISION Writing Skills: In your end of year exam you will be asked to write a descriptive and imaginative piece. You should look back through the Google Classroom at the topics covered and the examples of descriptive writing and literary techniques used such as metaphors and other language devices, e.g. similes and alliteration. These are the key areas that you will be marked on:

Built inside a hollowed out mountain five kilometres across, its top roofed with a massive dome to keep out the ferocious elements, this was their whole world. Beyond those walls, deadly storms and freezing temperatures had stripped the planet bare. Sol gazed out at the city, and realized for the first time just how small their world was. His window was facing towards the body of the crane, and his eyes followed it down to the bottom, a long, long way below.

The crane’s perspective heightened the feeling of being hung out in the sky and he experienced a moment of dizziness. He caught sight of the carriage that Schaeffer had boarded. It was hanging from another arm of the crane. It was going to pass inside the path of the school’s carriage, overtaking it as the students took the scenic route. It was moving jerkily, as if something was wrong. Sol leaned harder against the glass. He could see two figures inside. One was on the nearside of the carriage, looking anxiously towards the ceiling. He was a young man, dressed in the suit of a businessman or industrialist. Sol couldn’t see the other person very well, but knew it must be Schaeffer. Ms Kiroa saw what he was looking at, and leaned in closer beside him, her shoulder touching his. ‘Why is it shaking like that?’ she wondered aloud. ‘Maybe just worn bearings,’ he replied, wanting to sound knowledgeable. His gaze was locked on the scene before him. ‘They should lower it down. It doesn’t look safe.’ The obvious alarm in her voice carried around the carriage. All of a sudden the entire class was pushing in around them, staring out at the shuddering crane car, which was coming ever closer. ‘Maybe it’s going to fall!’ Faisal Twomey said, from behind Sol. ‘Shut up, you grit!’ Cleo snapped. ● ●

Extract from Goldfish Boy Mr. Charles had sunburn right on the top of his head. I saw it while he was inspecting his roses. He studied each flower, giving the larger ones a little shake to see if any petals fell off as he edged along the pathway. The big, bald patch on his head was now a bright red, shiny circle surrounded by white, fluffy hair. He should have been wearing a hat in this heat, but I guess it’s hard to notice if the top of your head is burning when you’re busy doing things. I noticed though. I noticed a lot of things from the window. It’s not like I was doing anything wrong. I was just watching my neighbours to pass the time, that’s all; it’s not like I was being nosey. And I didn’t think the neighbours minded. Occasionally Jake Bishop from number five would shout things up at me—things like weirdo, freak, or nutter. It had been a long time since he’d actually called me Matthew—but then, he was an idiot, so I didn’t really care what he said. I lived on a quiet, dead-end street in a town full of people who said how great it was that they didn’t live in that big, smelly city of London—and who then spent most of their mornings desperately trying to get there. There were seven houses in our little cul-de-sac. Six of them looked the same, with square bay windows, front doors with frosted glass panels, and whitewashed walls. But the seventh house, stuck between number three and number five, was very different. Built from blood-red bricks, the Rectory looked like a guest at a Halloween party where no one else had bothered to dress up. Its front door was black, with two triangular windows at the top that were covered from the inside with some old cardboard. Whether it had been put there to stop the drafts or to stop anyone from peering in, who knew?

Dad told me a developer had tried to flatten the Rectory twenty years before when our houses were being built, but it dug its hundred-year-old foundations in and somehow managed to stay, like a rotten, old tooth. The vicar’s widow, Old Nina, still lived there, but I rarely saw her. There was a lamp in the front room window that she left on day and night: a glowing orange ball behind the gray curtains. Mum said she kept a low profile because she was frightened that someone from the church was going to make her move out, since with her husband dead, it wasn’t really her house anymore. On her front step she had three pots of flowers that she watered every morning at ten o’clock. I watched her and the other neighbours from the spare room at the front of the house. It wasn’t quite as perfect as my bedroom, but I liked it in there. The lemon walls were still shiny-clean and it had that freshly decorated feel, even though it had been five years since it had happened. Mum and Dad called this room the office since we kept the computer in there, but we all really knew it as the nursery. Hanging in a corner there was a baby’s crib mobile made of six padded, stripy elephants, which dangled pointlessly over a tower of unopened boxes and shopping bags. Mum had put the mobile up as soon as she’d gotten home from her shopping marathon, even though Dad had said it was unlucky. “Don’t be silly, Brian. We need to make sure it works, don’t we?” She had wound the little key at the top and we’d all watched as the elephants twirled around and around to “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” When the music had stopped I’d clapped—I was only seven then, and you do silly stuff like that when you’re that age. Mum said she’d unpack the rest of the shopping another time, but she never did. The bags are still where she left them: diapers, bottles, a sterilizer, a monitor, tiny vests. Everything my baby brother would have needed if I hadn’t . . . Well, if he were alive. ● ●

GEOGRAPHY REVISION BSAK KS3 Geography website Information on how to revise, lesson resources, revision clocks and links to revision websites and videos are available on the Geography website. HISTORY REVISION Year 8 have been learning about key events and individuals during the Tudor period. This is broken down into the following topics below: ● ● ● ● ●

When revising your first and main place to go to is the Google Classroom. All lesson materials and notes are uploaded and your teacher will add additional revision materials. MATHS REVISION In year 8 students have covered topics in Number, Algebra, Handling Data, and Shape and Space. The specific areas to revise can be found by looking at the year 8 scheme of work, this can be found by following the link below. MFL - FRENCH | SPANISH | ARABIC (B) REVISION Speaking

There are no Speaking exams this year. With the restrictions in place such as the wearing of masks and social distancing, this has made this skill a challenge. Instead we will adopt the same system as GCSE languages this year. You will receive a separate grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction. We will base this on the speaking you have done in class this year so whenever you have made a contribution we will use this. Do not worry about this. Your teacher will talk to you about what structures you can use to improve your grade. Fingers crossed that when we return to school in September, we can get back to good old fashioned pair and group work with no masks!

This is how you can revise for your summer examination. Your French, Arabic and Spanish teacher will also break these topics down into bitesize chunks for you to work on.

Your teacher will tell you which grammatical structures you need and where to find them. One of the best sites to reinforce grammar for French and Spanish students is languagesonline. Click here. We would suggest 10 minutes a day on a particular tense or verb! Remember, this should be a habit anyway and not just for the exams!

Independent Revision The advice given above is only a guide. There are lots of different sites these days and if they help you learn ‘stuff’ better then this is absolutely fine. Some students like to use Duolingo, Memrise or Quizlet. For some fortunate students, they may well have a parent, sibling, neighbour or friend who speak their BSAK foreign language. We say use this source of revision to the max. It’s free! Your languages teacher will be preparing you over the next few weeks, so do not worry and please ask them if you need help. Good luck and remember that you the more you put in, the more you get out!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION REVISION The focus for Physical Education this academic year has been on the Education element of the subject. Students have acquired knowledge of the theoretical concepts that underpin sporting performance. As Sports Science constantly evolves it is essential that the students develop knowledge of this topic area. This will result in them having a greater understanding of the benefits of a healthy active lifestyle. This improved knowledge will result in better decisions being made in the future on individual lifestyle choices; such as training, eating and sleep habits. Quality Physical Education will result in a far healthier society. The ultimate goal for the students of BSAK is to allow them to develop their knowledge of the academic elements of the subject and to motivate them to apply this knowledge to improve their own physical fitness and well being. Methods of Training - Examples of different methods of training and how they can be implemented by different athletes to enhance performance. Principles of Training - Understanding why athletes apply these principles of training to improve performance Goal Setting: Students should understand how to utilise SMART targets when creating fitness goals. Short Term & Long Term Effects of Exercise - Understand how the body adapts and responds to Exercise & training. Muscular System - Students should be able to give examples of different types of muscles. They should also know all the major skeletal (voluntary muscles).
