INTERNAL EXAMINATION INFORMATION 2021 Dear parents and students. This booklet contains information about how to access revision materials for each subject, and the topics students need to study in preparation for the end of year examinations.

After a very unusual first year of Secondary School for these brilliant Year 7 students due to the pandemic, end of year exams in one way seem a little superfluous; however, although our main aim this year has been to see the students back into school and ensure that their wellbeing is looked after, we must also have gauges to see their progress, so these exams are important.

However, we must also put them into perspective. We want students to take these seriously, but not become anxious about the challenge ahead.

Preparation is key to examination success, and this booklet is designed to help students to prepare.

It contains ‘signposting’ to revision information about each subject. This is crucial training for our students - preparation for this year’s examinations is important, but even more important is the acquisition of a skills-set that will be used effectively when it comes to those final high-stakes external exams.

Over the next few weeks, Form Tutors will be spending time with students evaluating the best methods for how to actually revise – from the planning of revision, creating the perfect revision environment, overcoming hurdles such as procrastination, and the techniques students can use to really focus their minds on their learning over the next few weeks. During this next month, teachers will also be giving less homework to students, in order to allow students to focus on their revision – this means that students should now be devoting at least the time they would be using to complete this homework to their revision.

I do hope the students find this booklet helpful – a couple of important points to finish: firstly, for most subjects, your exercise book or Google Classroom should contain much, if not all, of the information you require so do use them; secondly, revision is about reminding yourself of information you may have let slip from your memory, or about going over work that you found really hard first time around – bear this in mind when completing the work. Finally, students should always remember that their teachers are always there to help them, and want them to succeed – therefore, make use of your teachers, and make sure that you go and see them if you are struggling with any area.

I will not say Good Luck, because it is actually grit and determination that you need over the next few weeks! All the best for heaps of those!

INTERNAL EXAMINATION INFORMATION 2021 Firstly, I would like to say how proud we are of Year 7 for the way that they have coped with the pandemic and the limitations that have been put in place as a result. The resilience shown has been truly outstanding and we are now moving into the final stretch of their first year in secondary school.

In preparation for the upcoming end of year assessments we have been introducing some insightful revision strategies including some great sessions on Retrieval Practice and dual coding. If you would like any further information on revision strategies, please do contact me directly. lmell@britishschool.sch.ae

In addition to this, research has found that learning environments also play a crucial role in student success. Students who study in a positive learning environment have been shown to be more motivated, engaged, and have a higher overall learning ability. My advice to Year 7 would be to find a quiet space with a desk where they feel comfortable and where they have space to put their revision timetable and resources in a neat, organised fashion.

Most importantly, during this time, a reminder to students to look after themselves mentally and physically. Continuing their routine in terms of family dinners, exercise and other after school activities that are already part of their weekly schedule are just as important a part of effective revision as anything else. It’s all about balance.

The best of luck for your forthcoming exams Year 7. In this next month use the resources you have been given to help you feel as comfortable and confident as possible going into your exams. If you are prepared you will do brilliantly, I have no doubt!

YEAR 7 TIMETABLE We have placed the Year 7 exams in the middle of the day. This will reduce the amount of movement the Year 7s have to have. There are other exams that will be taking place in the form rooms - both of these will take place under exam conditions to ensure that every student is able to concentrate and do their best.

During revision periods, it is essential that students bring in the revision they need to keep their minds busy, so look ahead to the next few days.

Chromebooks will be used for most exams - it is therefore crucial that students do ensure that they are fully powered when they come into school, and that they have working headphones.

ART REVISION Visual and Written Analysis and responses to a chosen artwork Yr 7 students have looked at various artworks throughout the year using the Formal Elements as a basis for image analysis, discussion and response.

The Art Exam: All students will have had an Artist Sheet provided to them.

Task 1: Students will need to identify areas of personal interest, linking these to the Formal Elements and produce 3-4 small scale drawings.

Formal Elements of: LINE / SHAPE / TONE and FORM will be of particular focus for the actual drawings (visual responses) but all of the Formal Elements will be relevant.

Task 2: On the same Artist Sheet, the second activity will require the students to explain their visual drawings again relating these to the Formal Elements. There will be three boxes, pre-drawn, where the students will record their written explanations.

REVISION: All students will receive support in art lessons prior to the exam to consolidate and practice observational skills and written responses in preparation using an Artist Sheet similar to what they will use in the exam.

All students throughout the year will have experienced using the Formal Elements in lessons.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY REVISION We aim to provide our KS3 students with a skills-based curriculum across all areas of Design & Technology. We have modified our curriculum heavily this year due to classroom and social distancing restrictions, however we still feel we have allowed Year 7 students to explore, question and experience valuable practical hands-on skills, theoretical based skills and techniques delivered through a range of small practical projects, where theory of manufacturing processes, materials and design skills are developed.

A focus on Computer Aided Design and Manufacture within Product Design enables students to build industry standard skills and practises which are becoming ever more important in the world we live in.

Students have learned how to use 2 main industry standard software packages, one of which can design remotely in 2D and the other a 3D CAD package. Students were able to send completed designs to our laser cutter, and then worked on packaging the products when completed.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY REVISION Textiles During the Textiles curriculum students have developed knowledge, understanding and skills required to make small scale textiles projects. ENGLISH Y7 SYLLABUS AND REVISION Writing Skills: In your end of year exam you will be asked to write a descriptive and imaginative piece inspired by Lewis Carroll’s fantastical tale, Alice in Wonderland.

You should look back through the Google Classroom at the topics covered and the examples of descriptive writing and literary techniques used such as metaphors and other language devices, e.g. similes and alliteration.

These are the key areas that you will be marked on:

Raindrops the size of bullets thundered on the castle windows for days on end; the lake rose, the flower beds turned into muddy streams, and Hagrid's pumpkins swelled to the size of garden sheds. Oliver Wood's enthusiasm for regular training sessions, however, was not dampened, which was why Harry was to be found, late one stormy Saturday afternoon a few days before Halloween, returning to Gryffindor Tower, drenched to the skin and splattered with mud.

Even aside from the rain and wind it hadn't been a happy practice session. Fred and George, who had been spying on the Slytherin team, had seen for themselves the speed of those new Nimbus Two Thousand and Ones. Extract from Evil Star There was something wrong about the house in Eastfield Terrace. Something unpleasant.

All the houses in the street were more or less identical: redbrick, Victorian, with two bedrooms on the first floor and a bay window on either the left or the right of the front door. Some had satellite dishes.

Some had window boxes filled with brightly coloured flowers. But looking down from the top of the hill at the terrace curving round St Patrick’s church on its way to the Esso garage and All-Nite store, one house stood out immediately. Number twenty-seven no longer belonged there. It was as if it had caught some sort of disease and needed to be taken away.

The front garden was full of junk, and as usual the wheelie bin beside the gate was overflowing, surrounded by black garbage bags that the owners had been unable to stuff inside. This wasn’t uncommon in Eastfield Terrace. Nor was it particularly strange that the curtains were permanently drawn across the front windows and, as far as anyone could tell, the lights were never turned on. But the house smelled. For weeks now there had been a rotten, sewagey smell that had seemed at first to be coming from a blocked pipe but that had rapidly got worse until people had begun to cross the street to avoid it. And whatever was causing it seemed to be affecting the entire place. The grass on the front lawn was beginning to die. The flowers had wilted and then been choked up by weeds. The colour seemed to be draining out of the very bricks.

The neighbours had tried to complain. They had knocked on the front door, but nobody had come.

They had telephoned, but nobody had answered. Finally, they had called the borough council at the Ipswich Civic Centre but of course it would be weeks before any action was taken. The house wasn’t empty. That much they knew. They had occasionally seen the owner, Gwenda Davis, pacing back and forth behind the net curtains. Once – more than a week ago – she had been seen scurrying home from the shops. And there was one other piece of evidence that there was still life at number twenty seven: every evening the television was turned on. Gwenda Davis was well known in the street.

Some questions will be worth 1 or 2 marks that focus on precise recall and will be part of a multiple choice question. The questions that are worth more marks require you to write using full sentences, with capital letters and full stops used correctly and including relevant detail to support your answers.

MFL - ARABIC B | FRENCH | SPANISH REVISION Speaking exam: There are no Speaking exams this year. With the restrictions in place such as the wearing of masks and social distancing, this has made this skill a challenge. Instead we will adopt the same system as GCSE languages this year. You will receive a separate grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction. We will base this on the speaking you have done in class this year so whenever you have made a contribution we will use this. Do not worry about this. Your teacher will talk to you about what structures you can use to improve your grade. Fingers crossed that when we return to school in September, we can get back to good old fashioned pair and group work with no masks!

MFL - ARABIC B | FRENCH | SPANISH REVISION ●

Your teacher will tell you which grammatical structures you need and where to find them. One of the best sites to reinforce grammar for French and Spanish students is languagesonline. Click here. We would suggest 10 minutes a day on a particular tense or verb! Remember, this should be a habit anyway and not just for the exams!

Independent Revision The advice given above is only a guide. There are lots of different sites these days and if they help you learn ‘stuff’ better then this is absolutely fine. Some students like to use Duolingo, Memrise or Quizlet.

For some fortunate students, they may well have a parent, sibling, neighbour or friend who speak their BSAK foreign language. We say use this source of revision to the max. It’s free!

MUSIC REVISION Your music exam will include several listening questions; you will be asked to listen to pieces of music and answer questions about what you are hearing. All questions will be based on the work we have covered this year, see the list below. ● ● ● ● ● ●

Key Musical Vocabulary: TONALITY - What is the key? Major/Minor HARMONY - Chords (do the notes sound nice together or do they clash) RHYTHM - Crotchets/quavers/rests/syncopation/triplets/tempo/time signature INSTRUMENTATION - Which instruments can you hear?

FORM/STRUCTURE - Sections of a piece and how is it put together TEXTURE - How many layers, is it a thick or thin sound MELODY - Steps or leaps, ascending or descending, sequences, patterns, repetition DYNAMICS - Loud/Quiet PITCH - High/low EFFECT - how does the music make you feel?

Physical Education REVISION The focus for Physical Education this academic year has been on the Education element of the subject.

Students have acquired knowledge of the theoretical concepts that underpin sporting performance.

As Sports Science constantly evolves it is essential that the students develop knowledge of this topic area. This will result in them having a greater understanding of the benefits of a healthy active lifestyle.

This improved knowledge will result in better decisions being made in the future on individual lifestyle choices; such as training, eating and sleep habits. Quality Physical Education will result in a far healthier society.

The ultimate goal for the students of BSAK is to allow them to develop their knowledge of the academic elements of the subject and to motivate them to apply this knowledge to improve their own physical fitness and well being.

Students have developed a greater understanding of the key principles that will allow them to create a Personalised Exercise Program.

Components of Fitness - Students should be able to give specific examples of the components of fitness. Examples: Cardiovascular Endurance, Strength, Power etc.

Methods of Training - Students should be able to give specific examples of the different methods of training. Examples: Continuous training, Fartlek training, Circuit training, interval training etc.

Principles of Training - Students should be able to give specific examples of the principles of training. Examples: Specificity, Progressive Overload, Reversibility etc.

Goal Setting: Students should understand how to utilise SMART targets when creating fitness goals. (Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time phased).

Short Term & Long Term Effects of Exercise - Understand how the body adapts and responds to training. Examples: Short term we get increased blood supply and an increased heart when we start to exercise. Long term effects of exercise are cardiac and muscular hypertrophy etc Muscular System - Students should be able to give examples of different types of muscles. They should also know all the major skeletal (voluntary muscles). Examples: Biceps, triceps, pectorals Skeletal System - Students should be able to name specific bones in the body. Examples: Tibia, fibula, radius, ulna etc.
