ENGLISH:

Book study – The Queen’s Nose, The Boy at the Back of the Class, The Raven Units of Study - Persuasive Adverts, Adventure Stories, News Reports, Diaries, Poems which explore form. Spelling - statutory words, ure, possessive apostrophe, homophones, prefixes:in, il, im, ir, suffixes:ing, er, en, ed. Grammar – nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, expanded noun phrases; similes and metaphors; commas, direct speech, rhetorical questions, comparatives and superlatives. Speaking and Listening - listening to the opinions of others and stating opinions, giving reasons. Daily retrieval and discussions.

MATHS:

Place value – read Roman Numerals to 100; find 1000 more or less than a given number; recognise the place value of each digit in a 4 digit number; order and compare numbers beyond 1000; round any number to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, negative numbers. Addition, Subtraction - add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using formal written methods; estimate and use inverse operations to check answers to calculations; solve 2 step problems Measurement, Length and Perimeter - measure and calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear figure in cm and m; convert between different units of measurement ie km to m Multiplication and Division - recall multiplication and division facts up to 12 x 12; divide mentally; solve problems

SCIENCE:

Science: Living things and their habitats Recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways. Explore and use classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in their local and wider environment. Recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things. Electricity Identify common appliances that run on electricity. Construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers. Identify whether or not a lamp will light in a simple series circuit, based on whether or not the lamp is part of a complete loop with a battery. Recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit. Recognise some common conductors and insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors.

HUMANITIES:

Anglo Saxons and Vikings Where did the Anglo Saxons come from? Why did they invade Britain? What Kingdoms were formed by the Anglo Saxons? How did religion influence kingdoms? How do we know?

ART & DESIGN:

Drawing Explore materials and the effect of combining one medium with another. Using a viewfinder to observe and draw parts of natural objects. Applying knowledge, skills and techniques. Painting Exploration of materials. Explicit teaching of techniques. Application of knowledge and techniques. Sewing Basic stitches. Cookery Following a recipe. Baking of biscuits.

MFL:

French In the classroom - equipment; masculine and feminine. Saying what you have and don’t have (learning about the negative); listening to classroom commands. Food - ordering food in a cafe. Learning about cafe culture in France. French phonics: -è -é -ê -eau -eux

Latitude and longitude Identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones (including day and night)

PE:

Gymnastics - children will learn balances, jumps and rolls in isolation, then look to build sequences combining all the gymnastic actions. Athletics - children will develop their running, jumping and throwing skills in preparation for their school sports day event. Swimming - children will develop their body position, arm & leg actions, breathing techniques and timing for each of the main strokes, while developing a range of other water based skills.

MUSIC:

Ukuleles Students will spend this term learning about the ukulele. They will explore the different ways to play the ukulele as well as learning chords that will enable them to perform popular music.
