n Ai Rak Khlai Khwam Nao or “Love and Warmth at Winter’s End,” is the festival that His Majesty King Maha VajiralongkornBodindradebayavarangkun has granted to be held at the Royal Plaza on the grounds of Dusit Palace and Sanam Suea Pa in Bangkok. The festival it self already started from 9 Dec 2018, and will finish on 19 Jan 2019.

In this festival, you can learn and see more about Thailand history and the value of the waterways of Rattanakosin. You will see lots of artistic creation, such as the model of Aisawan Thipphaya-at Pavilion, the Thaistyle pavilion in the middle of a lake at Bang Pa-In in Ayutthaya; royal barges.; and the forms of buildings from the early Rattanakosin period to the present day.

ake off your shoes, climb into a Buddhist coffin and relax on your back on soft padding as a wooden lid slides over you.Now stay inside for three very dark minutes .

Experience “death awareness” Bangkok’s new Kid Mai (“Think New”) Death Cafe is a Buddhist “exhibition,” luring you with cookies and icy refreshments in exchange for a “death awareness” experience that could possibly change your life.

Many customers freak out and refuse to get in. Others timidly agree.

Three minutes later, they appear shaken, stirred, terrified, relieved or blissful.

This trendy, informal, shaded outdoor courtyard cafe also features a small fish pond, a Buddha statue and modern, mostly black, decor.If you didn’t know its grim purpose, you might think the lifesize skeleton sprawled on a sofa is a leftover Halloween gag. But no one laughs when they see the white coffin on a raised platform next to the cafe’s tables.

Museum VR creates new ways to enjoy for our world

R experiences, such as virtual tours, aren’t exactly new to the museum world. However, they have made a lot of headlines this year. This is due to the various COVID-19 lockdowns that took place across the world.

For museums that were forced to close as a result of the global pandemic, these virtual tours provided a way to keep visitors engaged. Plus, they had numerous benefits for the public too, from education to wellbeing.

Many museums were already providing virtual tours through Google Arts & Culture. This online platform gained much extra notoriety during the coronavirus outbreak. It allows people to view high-resolution images and videos of artworks and cultural artefacts from anywhere in the world.

There’s no doubt that Sriracha is the hottest trend in hot sauce nowadays.

There is simply something incendiary about this style of spicy condiment that has garnered a ravenous following among foodies, chileheads and hipsters alike.

Sriracha, as a general type of sauce, is named after where is is believed to have originated in the coastal city of Si Racha, in the Chonburi Province of eastern Thailand. It is a thick, sweet, garlicky-pungent chile sauce that typically has a base of fermented red chile peppers, distilled vinegar, garlic, sugar, and salt.

By far the most popular producer of Sriracha sauces is Huy Fong Foods, Inc., based in Irwindale, California, in a state-of-the-art 650,000 square-foot facility, which owner David Tran completely designed himself.

How did you develop your current recipe for Sriracha Sauce?

David: It was before America accepted me when I was fleeing Vietnam in 1979. So when I come to America, I landed in Boston first. Here I found that the red jalapeno chile pepper is perfect chile to ma ke Sriracha and I was told it could be found in California.

Spicy foods are becoming mainstream now in the 2010s, but how did people initially react to your sauce back when you lived in Boston and then later California?

David: At the beginning we only sold mainly to Chinese markets and restaurants. They were interested in it and liked it and ever since then we never have enough product to sell to every one.

“We’ve certainly seen Asian restaurants wherever you go, particularly in big cities”

BANGKOK — Your ‘murcan friend who can’t eat Chinatown food can stop asking for Panda Express – in the Thai capital, there’s Lazy Panda.

Founded by Chinese-American James Au and his mom, Lazy Panda is the latest restaurant to offer American-Chinese food in Bangkok. Offerings might strike a nostalgic chord in those longing for American-Chinese takeout – but for others, it may just be another farang-friendly Asian food option.

Those familiar with Chinese-American food, such as Thais who have studied or lived abroad, might note that, compared to chains like Panda Express, Lazy Panda seems less oily and more inclined to use fresh ingredients.

Still, the price point – more than 200 baht for an admittedly large portion – may mean some stick to lower-priced Chinese-Chinese food. Lazy Panda also isn’t the first Chinese-American eatery in town – those with cravings may already know of places like Golden Bowl.

GREAVES: YOU WERE ONE OF THE FIRST TO INTRODUCE MOLECULAR GASTRONOMY TO INDIAN DINERS. WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES INVOLVED IN THE CONCEPT? Chef Vicky Ratnani: ‘People think molecular gastronomy is all about foam and caviar, but really it’s about applying the scientific principles of physics and chemistry to food. The ingredients are not cheap, a certain skill-set is needed, and it has quite a niche appeal. It’s also a high maintenance cuisine that needs high-tech equipment – rotary evaporators and other tools are often very expensive.

YOUR SHOW, VICKY GOES VEG, AND ITS BOOK ADAPTATION BOTH SEEM TO PROMOTE YET ANOTHER SIDE OF MODERN INDIAN COOKING – WOULD YOU SAY THAT’S THE CASE?

“I don’t think we should compromise on taste. Food needs to have oomph and taste. ”

WHAT ELSE IS CURRENTLY ON-TREND IN THE MUMBAI DINING SCENE? ‘Modern Indian and quirky regional food. A lot of people are trying to bring forgotten Indian dishes back to the table. They’re also getting a bit quirky and relaxed in the way food is served. I see the growth of casual chic dining.’

DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE DISH THAT YOU’RE PARTICULARLY PROUD OF? ‘My asafoetida-roasted pumpkin, my coconut water-poached lobster, and my masala chai-poached chicken.’

Centuries Old Korean Style Gets an Update

When the K-pop band Blackpink released the music video for their song “How You Like That” in June, fans began asking about the group’s outfits, which appeared at once traditional and contemporary. Who was the designer behind Jennie’s cropped pink jacket, they wanted to know, and what inspired the look?

In the past few years, similar design concepts have been spotted on members of K-pop groups like BTS, SHINee and Exo. They are fresh takes on a centuries-old form of Korean dress called a hanbok. Scroll through the #hanbokstagram hashtag on Instagram and you’ll find thousands of posts with updated looks.

Some modern hanbok brands have been boosted by K-pop stars who command devoted stan armies. Kim Danha, of the label Danha, said her brand’s site saw nearly 4,000 visitors a day after her jacket appeared on Jennie in the Blackpink video.

Leesle Hwang, the designer of the brand Leesle, saw an increase in sales after Jimin of BTS wore one of her hanbok ensembles at the 2018 Melon Music Awards in Seoul. “It’s incredible how many people got to know Leesle through that one appearance,” she said. Another brand, A Nothing, gained some 8,000 followers after Jungkook, another BTS member, wore its clothes.

“The reason why people became interested in hanboks,especially outside Korea, is this growth in soft power as demonstrated by K-pop,” said Kan Hosup, a professor of textile art and fashion design at Hongik University.

A majority of traditional hanbok shops were, and still are, reluctant to stray from the expensive, ’70s-style tailored-to-fit designs, but online communities devoted to hanbok subcultures were already discussing what changes they wanted in the garment as early as the mid 2000s.

“And while it doesn’t need to be worn all the time, it can become a basic item like a white T-shirt or black pants.”

While a hanbok — which usually consists of a jeogori (jacket), paired with baji (pants) for men and a chima (skirt) for women — is generally reserved for holidays and special occasions, contemporary designers have been reimagining it.

Meet Pearypie: An Influencer Move

to Traditional Wea

Her real name, Amata, makes her a relative unknown. But it’s “Pearypie” – her social media persona – that gives her celebrity status with almost two million followers in Asia and beyond.

“This traditional textile has a long history, when the trend of printed fabric made its way for the very first time to the Ayutthaya kingdom.Back then, Siam didn’t have the technology for printed fabric, and artisans in the royal court had to design the floral patterns before sending them to be printed in a textile factory in India,” she says.

Concluding her story about India-Siam fashion influence around the 18th century, she called a waitress to order a glass of iced coffee to treat herself on a warm afternoon as I took notes on her commitment to traditional Thai fabrics.

How you design and love this silk?

After a trip to Paris, Pearypie gravitated to a new passion – traditional Thai fabrics. She often travels across the country scouring for material for her custom-made designs. Following the threads of textiles to local looms around Thailand, Pearypie came across equally beautiful people in her eyes who have dedicated their craftsmanship for the sustainable and lasting beauty of Thai fabrics.

Pearypie demystifies the “traditional textile makes boring dress” idea with her stylish designs that fit into the modern lifestyle.

She wore her custom-made outfits and took some photos at iconic landmarks and travel destinations, such as Petra caves in Jordan, the Pink Palace in India’s Jaipur and the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Pearypie posted her photos with these outfits in her social media networks, and followers take their hats off to her for the creativity.

“I want to create a new fashion for traditional Thai fabric.

I want to make it cool,” she ended.

Indigenous I

ndigenous designers often use fashion to celebrate their culture and raise awareness around key issues affecting their community. Now, the spirit has come to the modeling world.

Haatepah Clearbear is a full-time model, based in Los Angeles, who is using his platform to uplift his people.

The 22-year-old’s personal Instagram page serves as a hub for his activism work, where he highlights everything from climate change to indigenous rights. In doing so, he often gathers with other young creatives and attends key events, such as last year’s 50-year anniversary of the Occupation of Alcatraz.

Growing up, Clearbear felt disconnected from his indigenous heritage.

Around that time, difficulties at home began to arise for Clearbear, who learned he is Kumeyaay, Pai Pai, and Chichimeca-Guamare. One of his adopted fathers, who was encouraging of Clearbear wanting to explore his heritage, passed away from cancer; afterward, his other dad grew increasingly disapproving of the two brothers whenever they attempted to embrace their identities.

“There’s so many ways to communicate with people online—you can reach them in different ways,” 38

Currently, Clearbear is sheltering in place in Los Angeles; he is continuing to use his social platforms to

advocate for his culture. “There’s so many ways to communicate with people online—you can reach them in different ways,” he says. Just last week, he highlighted the Guna tribe on his page, and how they are suing Nike for appropriating their traditional patterns.

As for future projects, he also plans to travel to northern Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta; the Arhuaco tribe recently invited him to travel there to pick and plant cocoa, a practice that currently faces environmental threats.

Clearbear says highlighting these types of issues outside of North America is just as important to him going forward too.

“There’s a lot of indigenous environmental activists who are being killed or murdered,” he says. “I understand I have a privilege now to even speak about it, being where I am in the United States.”

Macedonian-Australian photographer Biljana Jurukovski has been fascinated by different cultures since childhood.

For the past five years, she has focused her craft on taking moving portraits of different cultures around the world.

In particular, her Tribal Muse series hones in on the beauty of the Surma tribe—and more specifically the Suri.

What drew you to the type of cultural photography you work on?

I was always a dreamer. From a very young age, I was dreaming about far away places and getting to know different cultures. I was always fascinated by traditions and the traditional clothes of different cultures and loved learning about them.

What made you decide to start with the Suri tribe?

“I was so blown away with the colors, the street life, and their culture” -Biljana Jurukovski-

The Suri tribe is not the beginning as I have photographed previously other tribes in Ethiopia, Angola, as well as the Eagle Hunters in Mongolia. However, the Suri tribe is one of the most artistic and colorful, with never-ending creations when it comes to decorating themselves.

What do you hope people take away from Tribal Muse?

The aim of the Tribal Muse portfolio was to present beauty in a very unique way and to encourage all women to believe that there is nothing more beautiful than being unapologetically yourself.

The survival and adaptation of traditional Thai puppet theatre (Joe Louis)

Thailand houses a great variety of art and culture, all of which is uniquely splendid (Virunrak, 2000 p. 19). Among these are the Thai theatrical arts, such as Khon, Lakhon, Fonram, Rabamand puppetry – the cultural heritage handed down from the beginning of the Thai culture in 1238 (Sukhothai period). Accordingly, methods for the preservation and development of these invaluable heritages are vital in keeping them alive in Thai society.

Among these changes and external cultural aesthetic values of Thai theatrical puppetry been successfully sustained.

Therefore,the present research on the survival and adaptation of the Traditional Thai Puppet Theatre (Joe Louis) explores the history and development of Thai theatrical puppetry, the factors helping the survival of the art in the globalised world, as well as its adaptation to the changing society.

‘‘El Gouna’’ Film Festival

nearly 20 years in the making, Egypt’s first animated feature movie hit the big screen on Monday.

The cartoon feature Al Faris wa Al Amira — or the Knight and the Princess — was showcased at the third edition of the El Gouna Film Festival.

The event in Egypt saw cast members climb to the stage to extended applause worthy of the years it took to make the animated feature.

The tale of the film was a classic, of a handsome prince who rescues and falls in love with a beautiful princess from a faraway land, amid heroic adventures and battles of love and war.

What is it about the Isan sound that grabbed you.

What made you want to work with musicians from this region?

We took a moment to have a chat with Will Robinson, the executive producer and creative force behind the Isan Project. The group have aimed to fuse Western and Thai sounds into a pop format and seems to be working, with their latest single ‘Nana’ shooting to the top of the Thai charts.

I heard a phin guitar and I thought ‘What’s That?’ and there was a small group busking. I took my iPhone out and started filming and I sent that back to my co-producer Michael Graves in London, I said “Check this out. I think it’s great” and I said to myself to make sure I paid a bit more interest the next time I came back.

Some our audience won’t be familiar with The Isan project. Can you describe for our readers what it’s all about?

It’s a musical collaboration between the sounds of Isan and Western sounds. We’ve recorded five tracks already, all of which use the phin guitar and other local instruments.

“My intention is to take the sound of Isan into the West and there’s no rules”

Obviously Nana has been your biggest success to date – What’s the response been like?

We always thought Nana was the one that was going to get us off the ground.

How ‘Home Sweet Home Episode 2’ Uses Thai Theater for a Fresh Pespective on Horror

The spectral nemesis is certainly destined to become the face of Yggdrazil’s latest, having been plastered all over the marketing material and placed center stage in each of the trailers. Much like Pyramid Head in Silent Hill 2, or Mr. X of Resident Evil fame, the Dancer will be a constant, looming threat that stalks players throughout the imminent release. It makes perfect sense for her to fill this important role as well, because – as Tubloy points out – she taps into the indie horror’s greatest USP: its Thai heritage.

A cursory glance at the reviews for Home Sweet Home will demonstrate that irrespective of whether critics actually liked the game they were all unanimous about one thing.That the interesting cultural tidbits and creepy Asian mythology really helped give it a flavor that was entirely its own.

Hardline Thai Buddhists declare WAR on Instagram filter

hile the Buddha’s image is worshipped as sacred by many around the world, it’s also casually co-opted by non-adherents as #exotic and #woke decor.

And has happened before with Line stickers, tattoos and more, offended Thais have now declared war on an Instagram filter. Their ire at Japanese augmented reality creator Bma_Japan, who earlier this month launched a series of Snapchat-like Buddha filters, has been met with overwhelming negativity online.

The fight gained even more traction when Knowing Buddha, an organization which promotes the proper care of Buddha images and is behind those massive billboards near the airport, denounced the filters last week.

Reached for comment, Bma_Japan said he was not taking the filters down.

I received many messages not wanting it to be deleted from many Thai people, he wrote.

He noted that Japanese don’t share the same sensitivities and commonly use the image in everything from art to entertainment.

Thai Airways is getting creative as it looks to raise cash during the travel downturn.

Later this month it will launch special flights that will fly over 99 holy sites in Thailand, building on the “flights to nowhere” craze.But the airline has huge debts which have been mounting during the pandemic.Many airlines have launched flights to nowhere that take-off and land at the same airport.

Thai Airways’ new flight will not land at any destinations, but will fly over Buddhist temples in 31 provinces before returning to Bangkok.

The plane will go north all the way to Sukhothai afterwards, tour the northeast, and touch down at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Tickets start at 5,999 baht, with a business class option priced at the auspicious figures of 9,999 baht.
