THE EDITOR’S SMALL PIECE Hello there and a very warm, if belated, welcome to your July magazine. I hope this finds you well, upbeat and, for many of you, ready for your summer holiday. We’re just back from a fortnight in Yorkshire (it was that or the experience of a Falkland Islands midwinter) and had the sort of break that makes you wonder why we don’t stay at home more often. Beautiful scenery, fascinating wildlife (I can’t decide if my new favourite bird is a curlew, a grouse or a gannet), great food, lovely people and no need to worry about whether the quarantine restrictions have changed or if your passport has expired. As a result of the visit to “God’s Own Country” (their words not mine) the assembly of this issue has been a little rushed, and it is a bit on the thin side in terms of content. THE “HAVE A GO” CHEF Ingredients

One of my favourite quiz questions is “where does Fray Bentos corned beef come from?” or something similar. Of course it comes from Fray Bentos in Uruguay, a city with the same population as BS9. No, really. I mention this as I had planned to do a corned beef based recipe this month, but then decided that a take on corned beef hash is more of a winter comfort food than a summer dish (although in my book corned beef can, and perhaps should, be served as a part of any meal).

So instead I wandered around the supermarket yesterday looking for inspiration to go with my vague ideas, and came up with what you are about to receive.

And may you indeed be truly thankful, because if I say so myself it is pretty good.

Well, almost. In the final photo - as served - you’ll see that I mixed in a portion of boiled baby new potatoes which, although a splendid and tasty source of carbohydrate, just didn’t seem to go with the rest of the dish. So, it’s entirely up to you - you can serve this with potatoes if you wish but I suspect it would be better on a bed of fluffy white rice.

300g chicken breasts 1 white onion / 2 large shallots I fresh red chilli I yellow pepper 1 small tin of pineapple rings in juice 1 mug full of frozen peas 1 large handful of fresh basil 1 chicken stock cube / stockpot 1 tin of coconut milk (light is fine) 1 tsp dried chilli flakes 1 tbsp olive oil

(The chilli flakes are optional - the fresh chilli will be enough if you like a gentle heat to your dish. If you fancy it a bit livelier then go for the chilli flakes. One teaspoon will warm things up to a medium, so don’t be scared the coconut milk will keep a lid on the heat.)

Anyway, here we go. As ever the ingredient quantities are a little imprecise - it doesn’t really matter does it? This isn’t Masterchef, so if you fancy a green chilli and a red pepper instead then you go for it. And timing is slightly vague - when it’s ready it’s ready.

One big wok / frying pan is all you need, unless you want to gently boil or steam some side veggies, in which case you’ll need a saucepan. I went for tenderstem broccoli which is in season (I’m guessing that, I don’t really know when English broccoli comes out) and it went perfectly.

Finely chop your shallots / onion, deseed and finely chop the chilli, deseed and dice the pepper, roughly chop the pineapple into small chunks, and roughly chop / tear the basil. Dissolve the stock cube / stockpot in enough boiling water to fill a small wineglass. Drain the juice off the pineapple but retain it.

THE “HAVE A GO” CHEF in the chopped shallots / onion and fresh chilli. Fry gently for 5 minutes until the shallots / onions have softened and are starting to take on the colour of the chilli.

6. When it looks ready it is ready. Remove from the heat, serve on a bed of boiled rice and, as mentioned, vegetables of your choice. Don’t forget a sprig of basil to garnish your dish. Enjoy

2. Now add in to the pan your diced chicken and cook for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring regularly, until the chicken is starting to take on some colour. You can add in a little of the pineapple juice if the mix is getting a bit dry.

3. Add the pineapple chunks, peppers, frozen peas and chicken stock, and stir gently over a low heat for a further 5 minutes.

4. Now add in the coconut the shredded basil and the chilli flakes, and increase the until your mixture starts to

milk, dried heat boil.

5. Reduce the heat and let everything simmer, uncovered, for about 10 minutes. You are looking for the liquid to reduce to more of a thick sauce than a thin broth, so if it needs an extra 5 minutes or so that’s fine.

Heat awareness advice

Welcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the monthly advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by John Moore, Director of Home Instead in North Bristol.

With warmer weather on the way, it is important to recognise that older people’s bodies are often unable to adjust to sudden changes in temperature, which makes them more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Doctors have warned that hot nights are particularly dangerous for the elderly as it is more difficult for their bodies to recover from heat stress caused during hot days. With this in mind, here are a few tips on how to stay safe during the warm summer months:

Avoid the hottest times of the day (between 11am – 3pm) – if you do need to venture out make sure you aren’t outside for long periods of time and find shady spots when you can.

Keep hydrated – even if you’re not thirsty it’s important to drink plenty of water or fruit juice to replace fluids lost during sweating. Avoid caffeine or alcohol which increase dehydration.

Think lightweight – choose clothing which is loose, lightweight, light coloured and breathable, such as a white linen or cotton shirt.

Cover up – in addition to wearing cooler clothing it’s also important to remember a hat. No matter whether it’s a cotton baseball cap or a straw boater, headwear will help to keep your face in the shade.

Pick the perfect spot – seek out the coolest areas of your home during warmer weather. Keep curtains and blinds closed to prevent sun heating up rooms, especially your bedroom.

the income tax. I’ve also spent time encouraging the use of different ‘tax wrappers’ – more about that next month. For now, I’ll leave you with an example of how to use the tax benefits of a pension really well.

You may remember headlines about accessing your pension flexibly and articles talking about buying Lamborghinis or buy to let properties from a few years ago? Well time flies and incredibly I wrote an article for Bristol Nine, warning about this in June 2014, 7 years ago! Did the new rules have much of an influence on my work as a financial planner – yes they did, but not, I’m glad to say, resulting in clients acting in this way, as to do so, would have seen them paying significant amounts of income tax – something incredibly many of those articles in 2014, failed to mention.

Emma is 59 years old and married. She was a teacher for many years until she set up her own business about 7 years ago. She has a Teachers pension which will pay c.£18,000 p.a. at age 65 as well as her State Pension from 67 which is sufficient for her. However, Emma wants to retire gradually over the next year or two and her income will reduce to about £6,000 a year as a result.

She has about £42,000 in a private pension – “icing on the cake”, as she says. This was accumulated by paying £500 per month for the last 5 years and benefitting from 20% tax relief (about £125 per month). She was underwhelmed by the possible £1,100 p.a. income from an annuity and said she could do with higher income from the private pension between now and 65/67 at the expense of a low, level income in years to come. So, a better ‘flexible option’ was to take 5 Uncrystalised Fund Pension Lump Sum (UFPLS) withdrawals of £8,400 p.a. for 5 years. The first 25% of each is payable tax free and the residual £6,300 p.a. would be added to her income of £6,000 p.a. meaning the total is within her £12,570 personal allowance, so there would be no income tax.

Many people are under the misapprehension that pensions are tax free when you draw them.

I often think this is because the state pension is paid gross, with any income tax owed (by being in excess of the personal allowance - £12,570 in 2021/22) being deducted elsewhere. In reality there is a tax-free lump sum option with all pensions, however everything else is taxable (at your highest marginal rate). Does this seem unfair, well not really, when you consider that you would have had tax relief on the pension contributions when making them and ,tax free growth on those contributions and also on the tax relief. So, paying back some income tax on part of the pension drawn, is actually quite reasonable.

She had £7,500 tax relief (20%) on the contributions over 5 years, tax free growth turning the £30,000 into £42,000 and can now draw the entire fund with 0% income tax liability.

See, tax rules are not always bad!

What did change with the pension reforms all those years ago, was the muddying of the word ‘income’. Until that point, income from pensions was usually provided by the purchase of an annuity or through pension drawdown, but either way it was usually a regular monthly amount.

However ‘pension flexibility’ changed that, permitting someone to take all of their ‘income’ in one go – not so much income, more ‘lump sum withdrawal’ really. So, although over the past 7 years, I have had many clients use their pensions in far more creative ways, so they can achieve their objectives, I have always had one eye on

Should You Wait for ‘No Fault’ Divorces?

The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 will come into force on 6 April 2022, which means there is finally certainty for the introduction of ‘no fault’ divorces. However, what does this mean for divorcing couples and should they wait for the new law to come into force before divorcing?

The Current Law In England and Wales, to get divorced you must demonstrate that the marriage has irretrievably broken down using one of the following reasons: • • • • •

Your spouse has committed adultery with someone of the opposite sex Unreasonable behaviour Separated for at least two years and your spouse consents to the divorce Separated for at least five years Desertion

The requirement to wait before divorcing or the need to place blame can make separating more acrimonious which can create more difficulties when dividing matrimonial assets or childcare responsibilities.

There are three main changes to the new law:

Absence of blame - Parties can simply state that the relationship has broken down and some couples will be able to make a joint application for divorce if they wish, reducing animosity.

Timing - The minimum time period to finalise a divorce will be increased to 20 weeks from the date the petition is first filed until the Conditional Divorce Order (currently known as Decree Nisi) is obtained followed by a further six weeks before applying for the Final Divorce Order (currently known as Decree Absolute). However, in practice, most divorces are not finalised within six months due to ongoing settlement discussions.

The divorce may be more amicable as no-one needs to be blamed If discussions about a financial settlement and child arrangements are less contentious than they might have been, legal costs may be reduced Waiting might be best if one spouse is likely to object to the divorce (and no adultery has taken place).

However, waiting to divorce may be problematic in some cases. For example: •

If you agree a financial settlement but wait to start your divorce, you will not be able to obtain a court order recording the financial agreement. The agreement will therefore not be legally binding and could be altered later at the time of the divorce. We recommend that finances are not divided prior to the divorce.

You will not be able to apply to

the Family Court to assist with any dispute in relation to your finances until you begin the divorce process.

An ongoing dispute could increase animosity and stress for both spouses.

Ultimately, the right thing to do will depend on the individual circumstances of each couple.

Seeking New Gods by Gruff Rhys (Rough Trade) Best known as the frontman of Welsh psychindie legends Super Furry Animals, Gruff Rhys’s solo work, despite many an enjoyable moment, has never quite lived up to the work of his band… until now that is.

Stainless Style by Neon Neon (Lex Record) Ostensibly the duo of Gruff Rhys and producer Boom Bip, but featuring enough collaborators (including Fab Moretti, Spank Rock and Cate Le Bon) to suggest more of a collective feel, Neon Neon was a project which began in 2006 and subsequently released a pair of albums, of which 2008’s Stainless Style is the clear standout.

Originally conceived as a biography of Mount Paektu on the broder of China and North Korea, the idea for Seeking New Gods became something more personal – a reflection on how people and civilisations come and go while geology evolves in an altogether more unhurried fashion. Though that theme is a constant companion throughout, it never weighs the album down or detracts from the songcraft.

A musical retelling of the turbulent life and times of John Delorean, the founder of the Delorean Motor Company, the album’s shimmering style is the perfect fit for this tale of 80s excess. Other big names from the decade such as Raquel Welch and Michael Douglas crop up in the songs, helping anchor Delorean’s story for anyone not familiar with it (and it’s quite the story).

Sonically, Seeking New Gods isn’t a mile away from the music Rhys makes with his band, and that’s no bad thing. Opening track Mausoleum of My Former Self is ripe with fuzzy melody and has a horn section which brings to mind classic SFA tracks like Northern Lites. The loose balladry of Seeking New Gods drifts to similar heights as the canonical Mountain People.

If this all sounds a bit gimmicky then fear not, the music itself is bold, bombastic and brilliant.

Opening duo Dream Cars and I Told Her On Alderaan are catchy as hell and throughout the record the guests give their all to elevate each track far above the realms of pastiche – Cate Le Bon’s sensual robot turn on I Lust U being a particular highlight.

There are plenty of interesting tributaries too, Can’t Carry On has a misty, ethereal feel thanks to the addition of vocals from Lisa Jen-Brown and Mirain Hafand, Everlasting Joy stomps along like a challenging hike and closing track Distant Snowy Peaks is a gentle murmur of a song which reveals new beauties with each bar.

By now it’s probably clear that, whether as a solo artist, with Super Furry Animals or this crazy crew, Gruff Rhys really does it for us!

It’s also an album to put a smile on your face. Take the grungy Hiking in Lighting or McCartneyesque Holiest Of The Holy Men, each showcasing his ability to write lyrics which are at once informative as they are entertaining (such as the assertion that, “Sandy foundations make shaky skyscrapers,” on the former).

Okay so maybe we’re getting a bit techie here, but wouldn’t it by nice to know a little more about one of the most important instruments of all time? What makes these discussions about guitars, amps, effects pedals and more so accessible is the amiable nature of host Loren Hunt. Whether you’re a novice, pro, or merely an interested bystander, this lengthy series will only increase your love of the mighty axe.

It’s an enthralling read and along the way you’ll be introduced to the science behind the weapons, and the horrors involved.

Home Stretch, the gripping new novel by Graham Norton, begins with a wedding eve car tragedy and chronicles the reverberations over the thirty years that follow. Connor, the driver, kills three and maims another. It’s a small town. He can’t stay there. His sister finds happiness that quickly turns sour. The parents of the victims struggle on. Connor has a secret that stays deep inside him, souring his own life as he travels. It’s the next generation and a change in social attitudes that resolve matters. This is a sensitive and thoughtful study of family life and things that can’t be said; a great read.

Hillary Clinton. But what if she hadn’t married Bill? She’d still be Rodham, the title of Curtis Sittenfield’s wonderful, page turning novel in which Hillary turns Bill down. Twice. And makes her own unaccompanied way in the world of US politics. After she’s refused him, the book becomes an informed imagining of what might have been as Hillary fights her way towards the top, demonstrating astuteness, compassion and determination, enjoying achievements but, with only a few deep friendships, also enduring loneliness. This is a marvellous study of what it takes to succeed as a female politician in a male environment; and impossible to put down.

Bruce Fellows’ book reviews have been a regular feature in the magazine for a number of years, and I for one have read many of his recommendations, books that would otherwise have passed me by.

Launch of new assisted transport service “ I enjoyed working as a Project Manager / Account Manager for over twenty years in the fast-paced Events and Exhibitions industry, but in 2020 this industry came to a halt due to COVID and I started considering a mid-life career change.

Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) has recently introduced three new critical care cars to their response vehicles, alongside their helicopter.

The cars carry exactly the same specialist equipment as the helicopter and allow the crew to get to the scene of a patient quickly. In instances where a patient needs transporting to hospital, the air ambulance crew will accompany them in a land ambulance whilst continuing their critical care on route. Having critical care cars also enables the team to respond to incidents in all weather conditions, when the helicopter may be unsafe to fly in.

The cars were purchased thanks to a oneoff grant from the Department of Health and Social Care in 2019, and will allow their crew to respond to more people in urgent need across the region.

The charity’s team of Critical Care Doctors and Specialist Paramedics respond to people suffering from life-threatening illness or injury, bringing hospital-level care direct to where it’s needed most.

Previously, the charity operated two critical care cars that were becoming increasingly unreliable and unfit for purpose, having done many miles since their introduction.

By adding a third car to their fleet, they will now be able to bring their lifesaving care to up to 50 more patients a year.

In 2020, the charity’s critical care cars were more important than ever in keeping their service running, as COVID-19 restrictions meant that their helicopter had to be decontaminated after each mission. They responded to over 70% of their 1,726 missions last year by car, ensuring that those in need could still receive urgent care.

CEO Anna Perry, said: “Although GWAAC goes to around 2,000 incidents each year, there are even more people in our local communities who could benefit from our service. By adding a third critical care car to our fleet, we can deploy our clinicians to more people who need our expert skills and lifesaving care.”

As a charity, they respond to over five criticallyill patients a day on average, many of which are by critical care car. Despite this, a recent survey carried out by the charity showed that 66% of people living in their region didn’t expect or didn’t know that they responded by car as well as helicopter.

The upgrade from Windows 10 to 11 can be done like any other Windows update. Most users will set it by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click Check for Updates. If available, you’ll see “Feature update to Windows 11”. If you’re already a Windows 10 user, Windows 11 will appear as a free upgrade to your machine.Microsoft say, to see if your current Windows 10 PC is eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 11, visit www. windows.com and download the PC Health app. Windows 11 does require your PC to have a higher basic specification than Windows 10 did, which might cause problems for some users with older, lower-power machines, and there are BOUND to be lots of initial bugs and teething problems. So my initial advice would be to NOT jump the gun and update until the core of these issues are ironed out!

In a complete u-turn on it’s previous announcement that Windows 10 was to be the last iteration of it’s operating system, Microsoft have officially unveiled Windows 11.

For those that have only recently moved to Windows 10, this may not be the news you wanted to hear. Most of my clients dread having to get used to yet another new layout and everything they know now being in a different place .... and I have every sympathy.

Looking on the bright side, general feedback, from those who have seen the beta-versions, is that it’s pretty good (Microsoft have learned a few lessons along the way!), and it shouldn’t be TOO different to find your way around.

Windows 11 includes a slew of new features, including the ability to download and run Android apps, lots of useful new widgets, a new cleaner Mac-like design, and reports say it’s much quicker to bootup and perform.

Inheritance Tax - don’t lose out.

The rules are meant to stop people from rattling around big houses to make the most of tax breaks on their homes, but it is the families who have to claim the addition and most lay executors have no idea it exists at all.

Bereaved families face paying up to £140,000 in avoidable inheritance tax due to bewilderment over the death duty’s “most confusing” rule.

It is worth pointing out that the rules apply to anyone who has sold their home or downsized to a smaller property since July 2015. It means the window on claims is growing and more people will be caught out over time, needlessly losing thousands to the taxman.

Since 2018 homeowners have benefited from extra tax breaks on their main home when passing it on to a direct descendent, known as the “main residence nil rate band”, or “family home allowance”. Today this stands at £175,000 and comes on top of the standard £325,000 allowance. Spouses and civil partners can share their allowances.

People who sell an expensive property to downsize or to go into care can claim a tax credit known as the “downsizing addition” so they still qualify for the enhanced protections.

As an example, consider a widow who sold her house in 2018 for £400,000 and moved into residential care, but later died in 2020, leaving £650,000 in investments and £350,000 in cash to her family. Her relatives use her and her former husband’s main IHT allowance so the investment portfolio passes tax free.

They wrongly believe they cannot claim the family home allowance, as the house was sold previously, and are hit with a £140,000 death tax bill. But by claiming the downsizing addition they could cut the tax bill entirely.

But many are unaware they qualify. The Government’s own tax adviser, the Office of Tax Simplification, said in a report that downsizing rules were a very complicated aspect of the 40pc death tax and that virtually no one was able to work them out without the help of professionals.

Now, with more people downsizing, living longer and moving into care in later life, an increasing number risk missing out.

The OTS has said the rules will continue to confuse and cause problems unless a more straightforward way to achieve broadly the same policy outcome is achieved. It is well worth seeking legal advice before making any decisions on the best way forward.

HISTORY NOTES - JULIAN LEA-JONES No. 160 - discovering Bristol’s Americana This walk gives a selection of the more than fifty places linking Bristol and America, and is limited, for walking convenience, mainly to Bristol’s central area. I first prepared this walk in the 1970’s for business visitors from our parent company, Sperry Gyroscope, in New York.

The walk was extended in 1984 for BBC Radio Bristol’s “Bristol/USA listeners’ tour”. In 1997 it was used again to support the initiative of Keith Hallett, Richard Lee and others for the proposed establishment of an “America Place”, together with an accompanying history trail through the heart of Bristol. In addition to friends who gave so freely of their time and research material, I must also add my thanks to the countless people whose often heroic endeavours down the centuries established the links that are the subject of today’s walk. Because of the spread of the locations across the city centre a specific route is not given - use the article and pictures for guidance, and just explore!

St Mary Redcliffe, the American Chapel. The hassocks (kneelers) represent the Arms of the thirteen original states & seven Dioceses in America. Embroidered & donated in the 1960’s by the ‘Friends of STMR in America’.

St Mary Redcliffe, Philip Guy, Established Company in 1609 for the colonisation of Newfoundland at Cupid’s Cove. John Guy was their first Governor.

St Mary Redcliffe, Jay Family Memorial Brass at High Altar. John was a Bristol merchant, sheriff, shipowner & explorer.

St Mary Redcliffe, funeral armour and monument. William Penn Junior, the son of Admiral Sir William Penn, received a gift of 47,000 square miles as payment of a Royal debt, and used the land for a Quaker colony.

William wanted it named ‘New Wales’ and, when that was rejected, ‘Sylvania’, but the King insisted on the name ‘Pennsylvania’ in honour of William’s father, the Admiral.

There is a statue of William Penn in Millennium Square, and in Penn-Sylvania, (Philadelphia City of Brotherly Love) a statue and plaque. At Penn’s Landing in America is another statue and very significant plaque which marks the ‘Deed of Seisen’, ‘Deed of Seisen’ was an archaic legal ceremony, formerly practised in feudal England, to

convey holdings in property. The oldest forms of common law provided that a valid conveyance of a feudal tenure in land required a physical transfer in the presence of witnesses. Thus it was in 1681 - 1682, at Penn’s Landing, that by the handing of a piece of the ground itself (a token handful of soil and a twig), the ceremony legally transferred the 47,000 square miles of America to William Penn Junior. I bet the indigenous population were pleased!.

Welsh Back. Richard Amerike or Ameryke, one of the conjectured origins of the name ‘America’. Amerike, a Bristol merchant & Customs Officer, was Henry VII’s representative and a friend of John Cabot, and was the person who paid the reward to Cabot on his return from the New Founde Land in 1497.

The appropriately named James Bridges, an architect from Pennsylvania, designed the first stone Bristol Bridge. The 18th century balustrade of his bridge survives at Kings Weston House. Although widened and rebuilt, James’ stone arches dating from 1756 can still be seen beneath the modern carriageway & steel balustrades. Whilst in Bristol he also designed the present St. Nicholas Church in the Perpendicular Gothic style, to replace an old one which had to be demolished to improve the approach to the Bridge. He also designed the Royal Fort, then a private residence.

St Nicholas Street. John Cabot was the Bristol domiciled Venetian who, with his sons, in 1497 - 1498 discovered and first set foot on North America. There is a memorial plaque on the church wall, another on the Centre. There is also Stephen Joyce’s seated statue of Cabot at Narrow Quay, outside the Arnolfini Gallery, and of course the memorial Cabot Tower on Brandon Hill.

8. St Stephen’s Street. The explorer Martin Pring has a very elaborate memorial on the North wall in St Stephen’s Church. His first expeditionary voyage to North Virginia in 1603, in his ship “Speedwell” was to the place which he named “Whitson Harbour” after John Whitson, one of his merchant sponsors. It was later renamed by the Pilgrim Fathers as ‘Plymouth Harbour’.

Pring was subsequently employed by the Honourable East India Company and in 1613 sailed to the East Indies as Admiral of the Fleet. His ship was the James Royal, and my tenth Gt Grandfather, the Reverend Patrick Copeland, sailed with Pring as the fleet’s chaplain. Prior to King James the 6th coming to England as King James 1st, Patrick was the King’s Clerk in Holy Orders at Holyrood, Edinburgh, and chaplain to his ‘Navee’.

9. The City Centre, Edmund Burke’s Statue.

Burke was MP for Bristol from 1774 to 1780.

Historian Chris Bertram, writing about him for the Bristol Civic Society, said his election speech endured in Bristolian’s memories, not least because on the day of his election Burke famously argued against the idea that an MP is just the delegate of his electorate a speech which is cited in constitutional and political argument to this day. That it was made in Bristol makes it part of the city’s history and heritage. Burke is by far the most distinguished political figure ever to have represented the city, and he is arguably the one with the most enduring international reputation. An associate of Adam Smith, he irritated the Bristol merchants by favouring the lifting of trade restrictions with Ireland, and was also friend of the anti-slavery campaigner Hannah More.

10. The City Centre. In 1942 Eric Dehn, of the English-Speaking Union, and Walter Bingham proposed two commemorative plaques, one at the Quay Head in Bristol, and the other in New York. The Waterside Plaza, (latterly the ‘Bristol Basin’) is adjacent to the East River Highway at 25th Street.

Both plaques disappeared during the postwar redevelopments. However, thanks to the initiative of Ivor Davies of Temple Local

History Group, John Gardiner of Paramount Plastics, Derek Woodcock of BBC Radio Bristol, and the ESU representative in New York, replacement plaques commemorate the fact that the rubble from Bristol’s WW2 bombed homes was shipped to NY in returning “Liberty Boats” which had brought desperately needed rations from America.

The bomb site rubble provided vital ballast to ensure the seaworthiness of the returning otherwise empty ships. Bristol’s replacement plaque is on the stone seat directly opposite Hippodrome. In Clarence Road, across from the Mayor’s Arms Pub, one of the massive mooring points can still be seen on the edge of the New Cut. From here barges took the sad remains of Bristolians’ homes to Avonmouth to be loaded onto the Liberty Boats. Offloaded in NY it provided the foundation for the East River highway.

Some of the bomb site rubble though only went as far as Henleaze, to be used to fill in the quarry, forming the very popular Quarry Park.

11. Still at the Centre, a plaque commemorates Captain Thomas James. Barrister, privateer, Captain and Explorer, who in 1631 commanded an expedition in the Bristol ship “Henrietta Maria” in honour of Charles’ Queen. With a crew of 22 men and boys and 2 dogs they explored Hudson’s Bay in search of the Northwest Passage to the Pacific.

They discovered Resolution Island, James Bay, Nottingham & Digges Islands and Port Nelson, and spent winter on “Brandon Hill” Island, (named after Brandon Hill in Bristol) before returning to Bristol in October 1632.

12. No.1 Great George Street. A plaque commemorates the accomplishments of New York born Henry Cruger, a Bristol MP, Merchant, Sheriff, Mayor and Councillor.

He was Member of Parliament from 1784

HISTORY NOTES - JULIAN LEA-JONES until 1790, when he finally returned to America to become a Senator in his home state. However his Bristol appointment as a member of the Common Council was a lifetime appointment, which meant that he held office both as an American Senator and as a member of Bristol’s Council. He was also a friend & political colleague of Edmund Burke.

13. The Centre and St Georges Road. Isambard Kingdom Brunel of course had many accomplishments. Visit his statue adjacent to Broad Quay House on the Centre.

Engineer and designer of the SS Great Western and of course the SS Great Britain – an engineering breakthrough, the first screw-driven passenger steam ship. Brunel’s first passenger ship the S.S. Great Western was built in Bristol and won the Blue Riband for its fast trip to New York - leaving Bristol on 8th of April 1838 arriving in New York on the 23rd. Brunel’s dream was in effect the first door to door package holiday: London Paddington, his Great Western Railway to Temple Meads,, stay at his Great Western Hotel, (now Brunel House in St Georges Road where there is also a descriptive plaque), before boarding his fast ship to New York.

I wonder if it was Brunel’s grand inclusive travel package which inspired Thomas Cook in 1855?

14. Far end of the Centre, on the wall of Broad Quay House, is a most unusual ceramic plaque. It represents one of the intake fans of Concorde’s Rolls Royce engine’s, and was designed and made by the famous mural ceramicist Philippa Threlfall and husband and partner Kennedy Collings. The series which surround end of the building, depicts some of Bristol’s historic milestones. I will leave you to spot the ones with an American link.

15. Lastly, but still on the topic of Bristol being the Cradle of America, which applied even after its baptism of fire.

When cordial and transatlantic trade relations were resumed, George Washington appointed Elias Van de Horst as the first Consul for the newly independent America. Now marked by a plaque at 37 Queen Square, he provided the fledgling nation with its first British Consulate - and also a temporary refuge for Thaddeus Kosciuszko, a famous Polish refugee en route to America. Recognised as an American Patriot, Kosciuszko designed the Delaware river fortifications, and those at Saratoga and West Point. His bronze bust, as “Architect of the Capitol”, can be seen in Washington DC. Sadly, the plaque commemorating his stay here has been stolen.

At the practice we have started to get request for the replacement to the Pet Passport. Sadly this is a difficult document to deal with. It takes about one hour to fill in the 11-13 pages needed, and it is only valid for one exit out of the UK. It has to be in two languages, English and the language of the first destination in Europe. It is called an Animal Health Certificate, if you travel further afield you will need an Export Certificate, and every country will have their own requirements. Nothing gives me as much anxiety as when I see one of these on my appointment list. If I get it wrong I will be in danger of losing my license to practice. No wonder three of our vets would rather not do them!
