Thread holds the pieces to the making of beautiful creations. Threads become entagled together, placed over and under one another, leaving impressions on the creator and user.

In pursuit of disruption from the prosaic, the project begins at a public transportation stop. Located in Clifton Heights, the Clifton Avenue and Straight Street bus stop, outside the University of Cincinnati’s College of Law, the space is heavy with walking traffic and scarce of riders. The structure sits empty and disengaged. The bus stop supports a space of demographic diversity, supporting users ranging from professionals, college students, and high school students, but lacks any ability to effectively merge them.

The question, “How might design be a catalyst for disruption of daily routine” is answered through the motif of entangled threads. Just as threads are entangled together, the design entangles form and human to manifest disruption of the daily routine. The entanglement becomes the knot between the site and the users, encouraging interaction both physically with the object and with each other. The contrast of form and color to the existing site demands attention, different from one’s mundane pattern.

Site research was conducted over the course of several weeks. Recordings occuring every week day, twice daily, during morning and evening rush hour. Recordings were also conducted during inclement weather, as well as ideal weather. The place of recording varied from personal and away observation. Personal observation produced the research found when sitting, standing in and walking by the site. Away observation was conducted through recordings from a place where the user was not aware, so as to preserve the normal behaviors occuring at the site. Lighting, shading, weather protection, conversation, silence, and noise were all observed through these twice daily observation.

The entaglement was created as the knot between the site and the user. It begins on both ends from the dashed striping in the street. The entanglement weaves in and out of the street as represented by the dashing, and occuring in the proposed design. The structure threads through the bus stop and the surrounding site, directly responding to the existing forms in the site. It threads in and out of the sidewalk and concrete, and provides shading and emphasis to the entrance of the building. In addition, each end of the structure is less dense than at the site in efforts to set up the experience the user is about to engage with. n

This piece of the structure is created as an intimate space. The density of this space is emulating the same density that is found in the corner of the stop, but is designed to provide play. The repetition of the structure creates an interior quality.

This piece of the struture is created for multiple uses. It encapsulates the place where you get on-off the bus, as frames where you enter the structure as a pedestrian. You can sit, lean, hang, and walk under this condition, providing the opportunity for disruption.

This piece of the struture is created for emphasis on current components of the bus stop.

It flattens to provide a seat and back to capture the idea of rest and duration. The structure wraps around the sign that is inside the stop to draw the user’s eye away from their current focus.

This piece of the struture is created similarly to the last, to provide new purpose or emphasis to the existing piece. The structure wraps the map that is existing and finding new form to the bench that was existing.

This piece of the structure is created for an element of tease and play. This element occurs at the south end of the structure, where the user would first experience it. The piece provides purpose for rest, play, and a space for those walking to still physically interact.
