HOW CAN WE SHIFT THE TYPOLOGY OF HOSPITALS, BETTER PROMOTING ONGOING SUPPORT TO INDIVIDUALS IN NEED?

COMPONENTS OF CARE Physical therapy and rehabilitation builds endurance and enhances nerve function after chemotherapy. This aims to reach patients that want help in decreasing physcial aches and pain after treatment.

Community connection after treatment and during recovery can help people feel like they are not alone in this journey - easing feelings of hopelessness. These areas aim to provide opportunities for these individuals to connect without obligation.

Ongoing access to exams and care provide users with a sense of comfort. Knowing that there is a place, outside of the hospital, where they can quickly get answers to their questions is of utmost importance - especially when it is so critical to their wellbeing.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH HOSPITALS? The sterile finishes of a hospital come out of necessity. While this should only determine the finishes of the actual unit, it often affects the entire experience making it feel less familiar and comforting.

The large scale complex is increasingly difficult to work with. As buildings merge together and grow, wayfinding becomes difficult and attention to patient experience sometimes gets lost.

The monotonous experience of hospitals comes from the step-bystep processes at a large scale. However, at a more human scale, it can make time seem to pass even slower.

WHY GAS STATIONS? The smaller scale of gas stations allows for individualized care and a greater attention to detail. Impactful moments for users are sculpted in an intentionally laid out sequence.

The shorter time devoted to get care, go to a class, or ask a question greatly impacts the users of the space. The in-and-out nature of the gas station adds ease and convinience in a healthcare typology.

The variety of sites and locations make gas stations perpetually “close to home�. The idea behind this typology to provide users with access within their everyday lives, which means an abundance of locations would only benefit different communities.
