Food Power is a project that brings awareness to the current state of food insecurtiy in todays society. A pattern seen in urban communities throughout the world, and a topic many tend to brush off due to its multitude of complexities. How might we combat this issue of food insecurity within food desserts in urban and rural areas? This was one of many questions that started the capstone journey. As you read through, you will notice the proposal will highlight Avondale, one of Cincinnati’s gem. A neighborhood with a rich history, but has sadly been rejected and that poignancy is visible today seen as a food desert. Food Power revitalizes Avondale’s community by empowering the residents in a hollistic way through the fight of food insecurity.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? Food insecurity is the problem. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, households are being effected even more, making access more difficult to retrieve an abundant amount of affordable produce.

FOOD INSECURITY A household-level economic condition when someone has limited access or lacks sufficient quantities of affordable fresh produce.

FOOD WASTE wasted through all stages of producing, processing, retailing and consuming

“America wastes roughly 40 percent of its food. Of the estimated 125 to 160 billion pounds of food that goes to waste every year, much of it is perfectly edible and nutritious” (foodprint.org)

40% of US food is wasted annually

Since food is the largest component of municiple waste, it will impact our atmosphere. Food breaks down to form methane (greenhouse gas thats 86x powerful than co2) which will create more air pollution (www.epa.gov)
