How might we alter the experience of the traditional movie theater to become more private while embodying the futuristic essence of the drive-in theater?

DESIGN NEED Drive-in theaters have not evolved much since their peak era in the 1950’s and 60’s. However, at the time, they were considered new and futuristic, featuring three new elements: colored movies, the car, and the outdoor viewing of movies.

In addition, traditional movie theaters lack two of the most intriguing concepts of the drive-in theater: the level of privacy and the futurism that the drive-in theater was once recognized for.

DESIGN SOLUTION By implementing a futuristic feeling, the traditional movie theater begins to gain the drive-in theater-like essence. As of now, the future is geared towards space travel and inter-dimensional exploration. Combining this concept with private spaces, the traditional movie theater completely transforms into a futuristic and exciting experience that incorporates the intriguing idea of privacy within public space.

In considering designing a private space within a larger public space, cars are an intriguing form to look at as precedent. The car serves as a semiprivate space at the drive-in theater. Therefore, designing a pod with spatial similarities to a car closely represents the feeling of occupying a car at the drive-in theater.

POD DESIGN The pods are designed in the spirit of a car, providing a private space within a public one. They function to transport guests from the main lobby to the theater, and are manually driven by the occupant of the front left chair. A single opening on the right side of the pod allows users to enter and exit the pod without hassle. The pods can be electrically charged and are technologically fit for the future.

INSIDE THE POD A joystick on the front control panel allows the user to maneuver the pod in all directions. Once taken control of, the pod moves at a singular speed of 4 mph and stops when let go of. When pushed, a parking button locks the pod’s position until pushed again. A charger port also sits on the control panel for the pod to be electrically charged when needed. There are speakers in every pod for optimal sound quality.
