THE SOMEWHERE PROJECT: CRIPPLEWOOD PAVILION Exploring Mass Timber Construction

Project Description The Somewhere Project is the catalyst for the revitalization of Eastern Kentucky’s economy and culture. The main focus is on the redevelopment of abandoned strip coal mines which have been detrimental to the ecology and local economy of this region. The first phase of the project is the construction of an art pavilion for Berlinde De Bruyckere’s monumental and visceral sculpture, Kreupelhout-Cripplewood, 2012-2013. This sculpture is representative of reclamation and progress in the Appalachian culture of the Pine Mountain Region.

The pavilion’s design is inspired by the rolling landscape of the Appalachian Mountains. A sloping circular ramp filled with local art slowly progresses back and forth deeper into the ground. At the bottom of the ramp, the viewer is slowly exposed to a large light filled room illuminating the final resting place of the cirpplewood art piece accentuating its grandeur and importance to the region. The construction and material of the pavilion were chosen for their vernacular methodology, utilizing mass timber construction further connecting the project to the site and surrounding environment.

Process through pixelation Study of Part to Whole Through Faceted Forms

Project Description The focus of this study was to explore the juxtaposition of the physical and digital world. The physical study involved experimenting with faceted forms and color to create volume and space at multiple scales. These forms were then combined based on relationships in geometry, to create a larger, more complex whole (top Left). This whole was then to be examined back at a smaller scale examining the relations that were made in the initial combination. Photos were then taken of interesting volumetric spaces to be transferred into digital space.

The images were then digitally collaged in Photoshop to create relationships in a two dimensional context. This collage (bottom left) was then pixelated which blurred the understanding of the relationships made in both physical and digital space. This also added another layer of information, unachievable through physical fabrication.

The pixelized collage was then re-imagined into three dimensional space creating a three dimensional collage. The three dimensional collage (bottom right) was the end result of the part to whole process that started with a simple faceted structure which had been interpreted through physical and digital spaces.

Micro-retreat and wellness Center

Project Description The goal of Micro-Retreat and Wellness Center was to create three spaces varying in scale which are comprised of a large space gathering area, formal meeting area, and a private meditation room.

The formal concept is derived from the process of carving geometric spaces from a smooth solid monolith. This process resulted in ledges which were then altered to be used as stairs, seating, work surfaces, or lighting conditions.

The building is set in a desert climate, therefore a double skin facade was added as a preventative measure to address excess heating and lighting issues. The building’s material is carved stone which will also create a sustainable response to the arid desert conditions, creating a cooling effect for the interior of the building. The form responds and mirrors the ground conditions creating exterior gathering spaces underneath the building.

Project Description STILL LIFE RENDER (Left) Through the consideration of materials, placement, size, and complexity of differing abstract objects, the composition of the digital still life project gives the feel of movement and anti-gravity.

2D AND 3D GRAPHIC DESIGN POSTERS (Right) By using the assigned term, “Veil”, the objective of the project was to create an abstract representation shown in the form of a 2D and 3D graphic poster (formed by precedent).

Tabula Rasa: Community center Continuation of faceted studies

Project Description Tabula Rasa, meaning a clean slate or fresh start, is a community center based in Lexington, Kentucky.

The goal is focused on bringing essential needs to those less fortunate under one roof. This includes toilets, showers, kitchen, garden, dining, offices, and lounge areas.

The location of the community center is a vacant lot, diagonal from a farmers market, and walking distance to parks and other services that those utilizing this center may need. The initiative is that the excess produce would be used to sell for profit at the farmer's market, and the local services can use the facilities such as the lounge and kitchen areas to hold classes or informational sessions.

The formal qualities of the building are a continuation of a previous study done in 2018 on the idea of faceted volumes. The structural ideas are derived from a preliminary study on the idea of a superstructure that was implemented throughout an entire form. Thus allowing the superstructure to be implemented at all scales. Another goal was to study the urban fabric of the surrounding site and make conscience design decisions based on the pre-existing infrastructure to avoid the insecurities of new urban development.

urban Seclusion: Louisville event space

Project Description Urban Seclusion is an event space located in a previously abandoned parking lot behind the Louisville Public Library. The initiative behind the project was the idea to use pre-existing axes to relate and engage the building with the surrounding urban context. This would ultimately bring passerby into the neglected rear entrance of the library.

The buildings design is based on the idea of interlocking nested spaces that create layers of privacy the further one progresses into the building.

The most outer space is intended to provide a relief from the busy city through a dense green space and cafe / coffeehouse. The semi-private area is enclosed in glass and wooden louvers and surrounds the main event space. This space is used for the display of art and exhibitions which will rid of dead space when the event space is not being used. The event space itself is located in the center of the building and is the most private. It is enclosed with sound proof walls and a large skylight to provide adequate natural light.

Serene Interchange: LOUISVILLE TRANSIT CENTER Continuation of Exploring Mass Timber Construction

Project Description Serene Interchange is a transit center that takes advantage of a pre-existing bus transfer stop that occurs just above the intersection of the Preston Corridor and Fern Valley Highway. The route for this stop is a shuttle from the airport which is meant to give passengers access to the Louisville bus lines and vice versa. Currently, this transfer spot is an abandoned parking lot where passengers await their next bus with extensive wait times and no adequate amenities.

The goal of the transit center is to address the needs of the current conditions of the site as well as prepare for an expanding Louisville. As this is an extension of the Airport, the transit center serves as a satellite interchange for passengers using public transportation to access the Louisville international Airport, as well as an everyday interchange for public transportation. The space is designed to aid in the flow of passengers to and from pedestrian, vehicular, and bus traffic. This mass timber construction transit center contains commercial zones as well as a large waiting area which incorporates nature to provide a serene and spacious transitional space for passengers.

This project is a part of a larger scale urban design proposal in which addresses social and climate justice issues throughout the greater Louisville area.
