kenzie robertson, co-editor-in-chief OVID-19, a global pandmic that has caused over 1 million deaths worldwide, has affected all of us. Across the nation, changes have occurred to flatten the curve or reduce the spread of the virus; this includes education.

During the summer, parents were given a survey asking whether they were wanted their child to attend on-site or virtual school. Around 400 junior high students selected virtual, almost onethird of the student body at the school.

Joseph Allbritton, assistant principal, said that there were some issues regarding the survey.

“Part of signing up for virtual was that you would have reliable Internet so when people were surveyed and had to make the decision, everybody that did it did not have reliable Internet. People that signed up, I think, didn’t read everything that was gonna be required- all the prerequisites- and so we’ve had some things we have to overcome as a district, you know, trying to get people hooked up,” he said.

Ben Perry, math teacher and girls basketball coach, has four periods of virtual class, with numbers of students ranging from 34 to 44. He states that it is more difficult to teach compared to onsite.

BINGE OR CRINGE

Kenzie Robertson, Co-Editor-inchief Haikyuu is an ongoing anime series about a volleyball team rising from the ashes. It’s main character, Hinata, is small, but has a passion for volleyball and wants to become like his idol, the little giant. The show can be repetitive at times, but besides that you grow to love all the teams and characters for their little quirks and how they interact with each other. It has 3 completed seasons, the 4th is being made now.

Leo Munguia, staff writer Sister Sister is a show where two sisters are adopted at birth, but by different parents. Then they find each other by accident at a mall. They are surprised, but they quickly develop a close-relationship. I like this show because in every episode there is always something to laugh about, like Tamera and Tia getting confused from one another, Lisa making fun of Ray, or even just Ray in general.

Wearing your favorite pieces and staying in dress code can be difficult.

The dress code mainly contains the do’s and don’ts of “surviving” the school year without getting in trouble: don’t show undergarments, shorts and rips should be no shorter than 4 inches above the knee, no skinny straps, no athletic shirts that show undergarments, when wearing leggings, cover up the backside of your body, no cutoff-the-shoulder dresses or shirts, no sagging

Dress Code Tips -Having black leggings under ripped jeans gives the same effect to your outfit as without, especially if they’re blue jeans. Plus it’s now fall and it’s getting colder outside; leggings under ripped jeans are perfect to have the cute torn effect while keeping warm.

Although they were married this summer, their love story started years before.

“We both had a mutual friend, and she invited John to come watch the new Star Wars movie with us [on Dec.15, 2016],” Amanda, formerly Bradley, said.

Their first date was on Oct. 11, 2017. According to the Goffs, sparks flew, and they began dating.

Amanda did not always want to get married.

¨When the kids [students] found out we were dating, the kids would ask me if we were going to get married, and I would always say no,¨ she said, “It wasn’t that I didn’t love Mr.Goff, but I was independent.”

¨While being in our traditional wedding attire, we went to a Mexican restaurant,¨ Amanda said.

Being married also meant changing Amanda’s last name on everything.

“I wanted to change it before school started because it would be a hassle during the school year,” Amanda said.

Though the students do not have to get use to a new name halfway through the semester, Amanda said that the students do get their two classes mixed up.

Since getting married, both had said they have grown closer as a couple and are happy they married when they did.

Cannen Garner, Staff Writer As much as we hate wearing them, we all know that they are key to helping prevent the spread of COVID-19. The thing is, there are many different masks, so which one should you wear?

Cloth Masks

Neck Gaiters

Neck gaiters are most desired due to them being light, thin and very comfortable. They are made mostly with polyester. They are very common masks, so they can be found pretty much anywhere. As appealing as that sounds, many people do not recommend wearing them.

There are rumors that say neck gaiters might even make the spread of COVID-19 worse by cutting up the particles into smaller, more breathable droplets.

“I think they are less effective than any other mask,” Jamie Gaston, nurse, said. The CDC says that neck gaiters are currently under review and their effectiveness is unknown.

These are one of the most popular masks used, and for good reasons. They are generally made with multiple layers of cloth. This helps trap any moisture particles that may pass through the first layer. They are made for the general public, as other masks like surgical masks and professional respirators should be reserved for healthcare workers. That also makes them easy to find. You can buy them just about everywhere. They are washable, so you can keep reusing your cloth mask. To all eco-friendly folks out there, you will be happy to hear they are the best for the environment too, because you will reuse them instead of disposing of them.

stateWIDE masking Mandate MAKE masks LEGALLY required EDITORIAL OVID-19 is continuing to hit Arkansas hard, with 6,186 still active cases as of October 6. Right now is the time, better than ever, for people to start wearing their masks everywhere until this pandemic fades or a vaccine is found.

In order for this to happen, wearing a mask needs to be made a state law. Too many people believe that masks are not effective so they just don’t wear one, that or they pull it under their nose, which unfortunately cannot be legally stopped; howeverm public places can be encouraged to remove people if they are seen wearing their mask below their nose or mouth.

David Abrams, a professor of social and behavioral sciences at NYU School of Global Public Health was interviewed for an article on Advisory.com. “People who don’t wear masks may see it as a sign of solidarity, as if they are together making a stand against authority,¨ he said.

Why make a stand against authority when what they’re are standing for is also going to be the cause of some people’s last stand in life.

According the New York Times, over 1,500 COVID-related deaths have happened in Arkansas. In the country, the death count is over 216,000 people.

The Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation report that by December, 3,000 deaths will occur daily, but they say one thing can reduce the numbers and save hundreds of people: wearing masks.

There truly is no reason to not wear a mask, unless you have some sort of genuine issue with it, like asthma, or a child with sensory issues. For those cases, it’s only right to accept that. These are people who cannot wear a mask due to their health, but the entire reason we wear masks in the first place is for the health of everybody around us. So if you don’t have any issues that restrict you from wearing a mask, there is nothing keeping you from wearing one.

Some people complain about how it can be hard to breathe, which it can be at times there is no denying that, but they can wear the type of mask that doesn’t touch your face, and try to breathe through their nose instead as breathing through their mouth.

¨Masks may be more effective as a “source control” because they can prevent larger expelled droplets from

evaporating into smaller droplets that can travel farther,” the USCF website reported.

It has been scientifically proven over and over that proper masks are much more effective than no mask.

There is absolutely nothing to contradict that, and at this point there is no reason why masks should not be a state law.

‘Would you Shut up?’ Presential Debate Name-Calling Fisaco

On September 29, the Presidential Debate was held with President Donald Trump and Former Vice President Joe Biden. It was a very interesting debate, if you could even call it one.

As the Moderator, Chris Wallace introduces both candidates onto the stage, Joe Biden gave Trump a generous gesture. The first few minutes of the debate was friendly, but the rest of it was far from that.

As the candidates continued with the process, things started to get heated. I would have never expected such childish behavior from two men over seventy years old.

It was disrespectful to our democracy, and to our citizens. Not only are they making a reputation for themselves, but what they do represents the American image throughout

the world. I do not want to be represented by two men who cannot have a civil argument, which has been done many years before by other candidates.

Here are some shocking quotes that I heard during the debate:

“Will you shut up man?” - Biden

“There’s nothing smart about you, Joe.” Trump

“It’s hard to get anything in with this

clown.” - Biden.

Instead of a debate, it turned into a mix of name calling and personal attacks, including Trump commenting on Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. “Hunter got thrown out of the military. He was thrown out, dishonorably discharged, for cocaine use, and he didn’t have a job until you became vice president,” Trump said.

You could see the anger on Biden’s face when Trump brought this up. “My son, like a lot of people,” Biden said, “Like a lot of people you know at home, had a drug problem. He’s overtaking it.”

There are also the moments when Trump would repetitively interrupt Joe Biden in the middle of him talking, even after they had agreed to let each candidate speak for two minutes without interruption.

Chris Wallace even told the president to stop many times.

At this point it had gone from a respectable, friendly debate, to name calling, obnoxious interrupting, personal attacks, and even bringing up family members of the other candidate.

Students are finding new ways to entertain themselves during the pandemic by accessorizing masks and spreading their opinions rather than germs.

Some students think masks should only be worn in certain places, or only part of the time.

“If you are in a classroom you should have to wear one, but in sports, I don’t think you should have too,” Emily Koon, 8, said.

Koon is on the cheer team and knows it can be difficult to wear a mask while cheering.

“I think that they help and that we should be using them if we go in public,” Ariadna Flores, 8, said.

Flores says she wants to keep everyone safe and

always wears her mask correctly.

“It is keeping our germs from getting out and they get trapped in the mask,” Flores said.

Even though the students wear the masks, some feel that they don’t work and there’s no point in wearing them.

“I don’t think it really matters what type of mask it is, but I know the bandannas don’t work,” Koon said.

Koon believes that masks as opposed to the bandannas work, but it doesn’t really upset her if others don’t wear them correctly. And while she isn’t bothered by others’ choices, she still believes it is a smart idea to wear a mask for the time being because of the current number of COVID-19 cases in the state.

The size of the student population has an impact

on Flores’s views.

“Because we have such a large amount of people, it is safer to wear a mask. Also we can’t social distance,” Flores said.

Some students have even started making their own masks for different reasons. Some just want to personalize theirs, while others are doing it to make money or to donate them. Some people just do it for fun like Koon.

Koon has started making her own masks and even selling them to others.

“I have many different patterns and sizes. My mom put up an advertisement on Facebook for people to buy them,” Koon said.

New Athletic Pass Restrictions Keeping Students, Parents Impacted by CoVid-19 Precautions it Clean: Volleyball Riley Rutledge, staff writer

ue to the current circumstances in the world, students have been forced to adapt and do things differently.

Jadyn Hulum, 8, faces these difficulties on the volleyball team.

Because of COVID-19, volleyball players must keep their masks on at all times during practice. They must also continuously wipe their volleyballs down after every second server uses one. However, Hulum believes that these changes are not hard to adapt to.

“The cleaning is not a lot and not very hard to do,” Hulum said.

Although there are necessary procedures they must do, the volleyball team still gets to attend away games.

“At first I didn’t think we would be able to go to away games. [Going to away games] wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. It’s not as strict and all we have to do is wear masks on the sidelines and clean a little,” Hulum said.

Hulum believes that wearing her mask can be difficult.

“The masks don’t affect how I play, but I am not able to cheer on my team as loud on the sidelines,” Hulum said.

Even though the team has attended most of its matches, two major games were recently canceled because of COVID-19.

“I’m honestly really sad, because it’s supposed to be the biggest tournament of the year. This was something that everyone was looking forward to. We would have gotten a medal, and it would have been really nice if we got to go,” Hulum said.

To some, it might not be worth it to continue playing a sport that consists of extra procedures and cancelled games. However, Hulum continues to persevere.

“You have to push through and work harder. When we win a game, we are proud of it, even if there are not a lot of games left,” she said.

With everything going on in the world, it might be difficult to be positive all the time, but Hulum tries to maintain positivity for herself and her teammates.
