Performing Arts at Bryanston

Where creativity takes centre stage

At Bryanston, creativity is transformative. The Performing Arts forms a core part of every pupil’s education across both the Prep and Senior school. Recognised nationally and internationally, Bryanston offers an award-winning, ambitious and inclusive arts programme at the heart of school life.

Our provision spans music, drama, dance and production arts. Alongside artistic development, pupils build confidence,

empathy, resilience, discipline, teamwork and leadership, qualities that extend well beyond performance and prepare them for life after school.

Whether pupils arrive as experienced performers or complete beginners, Bryanston is a place where potential is identified and developed. Everyone is encouraged to explore widely, collaborate across disciplines and take creative risks, supported by expert staff within an inspiring community.

A globally recognised performing arts culture

Bryanston has a long-established reputation for innovative Performing Arts. Music, drama, dance and production arts work together in ways that reflect professional creative practice, enabling pupils to engage with performance from multiple perspectives. Roles may include performer, director, choreographer, designer, composer, technician or producer. This interdisciplinary approach ensures every pupil contributes on stage, behind the scenes, or within the creative development process. Understanding how different disciplines connect, strengthens independence and originality, leading to consistently outstanding outcomes.

Pupils are encouraged to perform and to think critically: rehearsing with purpose, responding to feedback and refining work through self-evaluation. Leadership opportunities include roles such as Head of Stage and Dance Captains. Bryanston

Performing Arts pupils excel across the disciplines, winning national competitions and progressing to leading conservatoires, drama schools, universities and creative degree courses.

Professional facilities and inspiring spaces

Bryanston’s facilities rival those found in professional theatres and conservatoires, including:

• Coade Hall, a 600 seat purpose-built theatre with professional lighting, sound and technical infrastructure

• A dedicated 300 seat concert hall for recitals and large ensembles

• Multiple rehearsal and dance studios

• A 1000 seat Greek Theatre for outdoor summer productions

• Industry-standard recording and production studios

• Specialist teaching rooms, practice spaces and design workshops

A collaborative performing arts community

Collaboration is central to Bryanston’s arts culture. Pupils regularly work across disciplines: composing music for theatre, choreographing original dance works, creating film soundtracks, producing digital content for productions, creating short reels or developing projects that blend music, movement, text, film and design.

Large-scale productions, pupil-led festivals and creative projects give pupils experience of the full process from first concept to final performance. Theatre technology pupils work alongside performers and stage crew from the earliest stages, gaining hands-on experience in lighting, sound, set, costume and technical design.

This approach mirrors industry practice and prepares pupils for the realities of creative collaboration.

Performance, participation and progression

Performance is a defining feature of life at Bryanston. Across the year, pupils take part in concerts, productions, showcases, competitions and informal events, developing confidence, resilience and stagecraft within a supportive yet demanding environment.

Opportunities range from large-scale musicals, plays and dance productions to chamber music and solo recitals. The standard of performance is frequently

compared to professional Broadway or West End productions.

Pupils who wish to pursue creative subjects beyond school can study GCSE, A Level and the IB. Individual mentoring supports audition preparation for conservatoires, drama schools and professional pathways. Performing Arts scholars are also assigned mentors to support progress and access to opportunities.

Drama, theatre and performance

Drama at Bryanston is open to everyone who brings enthusiasm and commitment. From Year 9, pupils follow a structured programme that develops performance skills, dramatic theory and textual understanding, combining practical exploration with academic rigour.

GCSE pupils follow the Edexcel Drama course. A Level Drama and Theatre Studies are highly creative and pupil-led, with a strong emphasis on devised and directed work. Productions range from intimate studio pieces to large-scale

shows, with opportunities both on stage and backstage.

One-to-one and small group speech and drama sessions support pupils in developing confident communication, vocal technique and performance skills.

Written reflection supports practical work, ensuring strong critical engagement alongside creative freedom.

Plays are staged throughout the year, including a Year 9 play, a Year 10 play, a Senior Play, and eight productions as part of the annual A3 (Year 12) Festival.

Music at the heart of school life

Music flourishes socially, academically and spiritually at Bryanston. All pupils in their first year are encouraged to learn an instrument. Those new to lessons can receive free music tuition in their first term, ensuring broad access to music-making from the outset.

Pupils perform regularly in concerts, ensembles, bands, competitions and masterclasses. Dedicated practice rooms, a professional concert hall and recording studios support instrumental and vocal exams, audition preparation, as well as GCSE Music, A Level Music and Music Technology recordings.

Bryanston musicians have performed  at venues including Smith Square Hall, the Old Royal Naval College, Poole Lighthouse, Christchurch Priory and Salisbury Cathedral. Many progress to county and national ensembles, university music departments and leading conservatoires.

Dance that moves you

Dance at Bryanston welcomes everyone from Year 9 to Year 13, whether discovering dance for the first time or training at an advanced level. The Senior Dance Programme offers approximately 30 to 40 classes per week, with daily and evening sessions in ballet (including pointe), contemporary, street, commercial, jazz, tap and more.

Pupils may take part recreationally or follow an intensive pathway, with private lessons available across styles. We support those preparing for RAD graded and vocational exams and ISTD tap exams, taught by professionally qualified staff.

For pupils ready to take the next step, the Nova Dance Company (NDC) is an audition-only elite pathway, with two

strands: Ballet/Contemporary and Street/Jazz (pupils may audition for one or both). NDC dancers work with visiting guest teachers and are encouraged to compete nationally as soloists and as part of a team.

Performance is central, with two major productions each year: a largescale, story-led Spring Dance Show and a Summer Dance Show featuring live music and singing. Pupils also participate in Dance Live, national competitions and the MOVE IT convention at ExCeL London.

Dancers are encouraged to choreograph and perform original work, developing creativity, confidence and a distinctive artistic voice within an aspirational environment.

Enrichment beyond the timetable

Creative learning extends far beyond lessons. A vibrant enrichment programme enables pupils to deepen interests and broaden horizons, including:

• Masterclasses and workshops with visiting performers and creative professionals

• Composition, songwriting and devised theatre projects with public performance

• Recording, production and technical experiences reflecting industry practice

• Cross-arts collaboration across music, drama, dance and visual arts

• Leadership roles within ensembles, productions and pupil-led initiatives

• Annual festivals such as BryFest, a ten-day celebration of the arts, and the A3 Festival, a pupil-led showcase of performances, exhibitions and live music

Trips, tours and cultural engagement

Experiencing live performance is a vital part of creative education at Bryanston. Pupils regularly attend concerts, theatre productions and exhibitions, gaining insight into professional standards and artistic context.

UK and international trips and tours offer further opportunities to perform, collaborate and learn together, strengthening ensemble skills, confidence and community. Behind-the-scenes visits and talks with industry professionals introduce pupils to the breadth of careers within the creative industries.

Partnerships

Bryanston collaborates with leading arts organisations and institutions. These partnerships enhance training, widen access and offer insight into professional and conservatoire-level practice.

Key partnerships include The BRIT School, supporting shared training, workshops and co-created performances, and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, offering a specialist pathway for aspiring string players through expert tuition, mentoring and tailored support.

Bryanston’s Arts Advisory Board is made up entirely of distinguished alumni working at the highest levels of the creative and performing arts. Their expertise and industry links open valuable opportunities for pupils pursuing arts careers. Members include conductor Mark Wigglesworth, actor Emilia Fox, producer-songwriter Jake Gosling, executive producer Matthew Clyde, entertainment executive Kate Rothschild and writer-executive producer Francesca Gardiner.

Scholarships in Music and Performing Arts

Bryanston offers scholarships in Music and Performing Arts to pupils who demonstrate outstanding ability, strong potential and sustained commitment. Awards recognise excellence in performance as well as strengths in composition, directing, choreography, design, stage technology and production arts.

Scholars receive tailored support, which may include specialist one-to one tuition, performance sports support for dancers, coaching, regular accompaniment, audition guidance and access to approaches such as the Alexander Technique where appropriate. Scholars are expected to contribute actively to the

school’s artistic life through consistent commitment to rehearsal, collaboration and performance.

Buzz Night evenings are held regularly for scholars to perform and present their work to an audience of friends and peers. These events celebrate creativity in all its stages, from refined performances to developing ideas. Buzz Nights create a supportive space where pupils build confidence, share inspiration and learn to reflect critically on both their own work and that of others.

Scholarships are available at Year 9 and Sixth Form entry and may be combined with bursaries where financial support is required.
