February 15, 2014 Welcome all to the third annual Miss Greater Rockville Scholarship Pageant. We are delighted to bring you this exciting event. All of our contestants who compete hope to attain the next level of achievement which is Miss Connecticut and Miss Connecticut's Outstanding Teen. This year’s Miss Connecticut titleholders (teen and miss) then go on to the Miss America pageant! The Miss Connecticut Scholarship Corporation awards scholarships to outstanding young women to help advance them academically and professionally. The Miss Connecticut Pageant is an official preliminary of the Miss America Pageant, the nation's leading achievement program and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance to young women. The Rockville Community Alliance is grateful to all of the many volunteers that joined us to produce this event. There is something very special about helping and supporting our young adults who wish to further their education and contribute back to their communities. It’s that special something alone, that rewards everyone involved. We must also thank our sponsors who are listed throughout the pages of this program. Without them and their generousity this scholarship pageant would not be possible. Please support them through your patronage and/or by simply thanking them for acknowledging the importance of this program. We hope you enjoy today’s event as much as we’ve enjoyed producing it. Why not consider becoming an active member of the Rockville Community Alliance? On-going community involvement feels good! Contact information can be found throughout this booklet. Thank you! Jim Sendrak – President Rockville Community Alliance

2013 State Titleholders Miss Connecticut — Kaitlyn Tarpey Kaitlyn Tarpey is a 21-year-old student at the Honors College at PACE University. She began competing in the Miss Connecticut Pageant two years ago after surviving an almost-fatal lung surgery. Her passions are raising awareness for Veterans through fundraisers and her blog: http://kaittarpey.wordpress.com/. Having family members who have served in the military and are now struggling to acclimate back into society, she has made it her priority to educate others and help veterans as much as she can. She is involved with multiple veterans’ organizations including the CT Fallen Heroes Foundation, the Purple Heart Foundation and the National Veterans Services Fund. Being a competitive Irish Step Dancer since the age of 8, she presents a contemporary Irish Step Dancing routine for the talent portion of competition. And though she might appear fully Irish, Kaitlyn was actually born in France. She has a 19-year-old brother who is attending the College of William and Mary on a full athletic scholarship. After learning that the Miss America Organization is the largest provider of scholarships in the world, she decided to participate in a local pageant. After joining the organization, Kaitlyn realized the voice it gave her in the community and she fell in love with the idea of being a local leader. After competing in the National Sweetheart Competition this year, she now hopes to become the state representative and travel all over Connecticut promoting the organizations commitment to the Children’s Miracle Network and continuing to build awareness about the Miss Connecticut Scholarship Program.

Miss Connecticut’s Outstanding Teen — Tiana Dyson Tiana Dyson is a 15-year-old life-long resident of New Haven. She is a rising junior at Miss Hall’s School. Tiana has also been dancing competitively since the age of five and was a Member of the USA Tap and Jazz Teams that competed in the World Championships where she was ranked internationally as a soloist. She is also a member of the varsity basketball and lacrosse teams where she serves as a leader on and off the playing field. Miss Greater Rockville 2013 – Gina Salvatore To my Rockville, To put one of the most amazing years of my life into words for a “farewell” is quite possibly the most difficult assignment I could have been given. As I sit here at my computer typing I wish you could all see the look on my face as I take a stroll down memory lane looking through pictures for inspiration; my face goes from an ear to ear smile to tears and back again because I am so filled with emotion about my year. It was everything I had wanted and more and I am sad to see it go. So here I go to try to put my emotions about my year on to one page…successfully I hope…. I cannot believe that my time as Miss Greater Rockville has come to an end. I never imagined that I would have ever attempted competing in a pageant but I am so glad that I took a leap of faith three years ago, didn’t tell my parents, and went with my gut when my chance came to cross something off my bucket list. I never imagined standing on the stage February 16, 2013 and that it was going to be me they would announce as the winner. I remember walking off the stage after the evening gown portion and I thought to myself “I feel absolutely beautiful. If I don’t win tonight, at least I feel beautiful.” Well, as we all know, I won that night and it was the absolute icing on the cake. I had no idea what to expect in my coming year but I was ready for whatever was to be thrown my way. The town of Rockville has been so incredibly welcoming over the past year. I have enjoyed and cherished every opportunity that I have been given with this title. I got to spend time at Maple Street School, one of my new favorite places, judge the Push, Pedal, Pull Parade at July in the Sky, hang out with everyone at Rockvillefest, and celebrate Memorial Day by being in the parade. It was an absolute honor to represent the Greater Rockville area at the state pageant and I hope that I made all of you proud. The Miss Connecticut Organization and this title has allowed me opportunities and experiences that cannot be found anywhere else. I have been able to see how much of an impact I can make in one child’s life just by my presence; a little something I like to call the power of the crown. I have learned that a smile and a hug go a long way, I’ve learned how to do my makeup, my hair, interact with a crowd of people that have nothing in common with me, how to represent myself and an organization in the best way possible and I have learned so much more about myself in these past twelve months than I have in twenty years. Without this organization I don’t know who I would be. With a crown on my head, visible or not, I have learned that absolutely anything is possible. I hope to continue to inspire others like I have for the past year with this crown on my head. Thank you for absolutely everything from the bottom of my heart. And never fear, this won’t be the last of me. Forever and always, your Miss Greater Rockville 2013, Gina Salvatore

Miss Greater Rockville’s Outstanding Teen 2013 – Jeanette Porcello My role model Audrey Hepburn once said, “For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” My year as Miss Greater Rockville’s Outstanding Teen has not only taught me how to truly embody this quote, but it has been a year filled with memories. Thank you to the volunteers of the Rockville Community Alliance for sponsoring the Miss Greater Rockville Scholarship Pageant and for the Miss Greater Rockville Outstanding Teen’s entry into the state pageant, and to Teri Rogers who volunteered her time as business manager. To Steve Smith, thank you for capturing the moments. Many years from now, I will be able to look back on my year as Miss Greater Rockville’s Outstanding Teen with nostalgia thanks to all the great photographs you’ve taken. To Ryan Gimbel, I can never thank you enough for preparing me for the state pageant. Your humor, interviewing skills, amazing sense of style, and being a great friend, has made you the best pageant coach a girl could have. You taught me to have confidence in myself, which is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life. To Autism Families CONNECTicut, thank you for letting me represent your wonderful organization as my platform throughout this year. My work with your programs has taught me so much over the past five years. Children on the spectrum have so much to offer. Recreational programs such as Running on the Spectrum, Swimming on the Spectrum and Playing on the Spectrum have enriched the lives of children with autism and in addition have brought their families together for recreational fun. The children in this program always put a smile on my face, and I look forward to additional fun with these children and Autism Families CONNECTicut in the future. I will always hold AFC close to my heart. To the numerous titleholders I have had the privilege of becoming friends with throughout my reign; the week we spent together at the state pageant in New London is one that I’ll never forget. I will always cherish the silly pictures we’ve taken, the many hugs exchanged, and the laughs we’ve shared. To Princess Tiana, I hope you continue to have an amazing year as Miss Connecticut’s Outstanding Teen. I am so lucky to have become friends with you this year. You are a beautiful girl inside and out, and I can’t wait to see what the world has in store for you. To Gina, thank you for being such a great sister queen! We enjoyed many laughs together at parades, events, fundraisers, and of course the Vernon Diner. I wish you the best as you continue competing this year. You’ve made my experience as Miss Greater Rockville’s Outstanding Teen a fun one! To my parents, my brother and my sister, thank you for supporting me every step of the way. I am so blessed to have you all by my side. You have shaped me into the young woman I am today, and I hope to continue making you proud! Mom, thank you for driving me everywhere, teaching me from a young age how to be service oriented, and always being there to talk to. Dad, thank you for always giving me the best advice, and inspiration when I need it. Stephen, thank you for being a role model and a teacher, both with school subjects and life lessons. Olivia, you always make me laugh with your good sense of humor, you are growing up into a beautiful young woman. I am so blessed to be your sister and your friend. To Hannah, thank you for being my guardian angel. I love you. With warm regards, Jeanette Porcello, Miss Greater Rockville’s Outstanding Teen 2013
