Alumni of the Year – Drs. Jake ’59 and Sandy Schmickl ’72 Matthes

theory and composition. Jake coached a state champion cross country team in 1968 and a national champion cross country team in 1975. They both pursued advanced degrees at the University of Tennessee, where Sandy completed an M.M. degree (1975) and Jake completed an Ed.D. (1978).

In 1976 both were invited to teach at Liberty Baptist College (now Liberty University). Jake taught mathematics and coached cross country and track. Sandy taught music theory, organ and computer applications in music. There Jake coached a national championship track team in 1978 and 1980. The outdoor track at LU is named Matthes Hopkins Track.

In the school year 1986-87 Sandy and Jake moved to Tallahassee, Fla., where Jake taught mathematics at Florida State University and Florida A&M University. Sandy completed a Ph.D. in music theory in 1995. Both retired from teaching in 2007 but continue serving the Lord in music ministry at Heritage United Methodist Church.

Jake graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1959. At Bryan he ran cross country and track and played basketball. Sandy came to Bryan College in 1958, met Jake, and put her college degree on hold. They were married in 1960. Jake taught high school mathematics and coached cross country and track for seven years before completing a master’s degree in 1967 at Northern Illinois Teachers College. He was invited by Dr. Ted Mercer to return to Bryan and revitalize the mathematics major and track and cross country programs. Sandy returned to college and graduated from Bryan in 1972 with a degree in music

R.J. and Lesley met while they were attending Bryan College. Both were actively involved in all aspects of student life. In 2010, R.J.’s job transferred him to Denver, Colo. Shortly afterward, R.J.’s company extended a job offer to Lesley, and she relocated from North Carolina. They married in 2012. Despite their love for Colorado, R.J. and Lesley recently moved to Raleigh, N.C., to be close to family as they raise their daughters, Catherine and Elizabeth. Currently R.J. is the VP of Finance for Venture Technologies, and Lesley cares
