MY MESSAGE OF

Hope, Faith, Love…

As Councillor, I have had to become more than a Local Government representative. This time has pushed me into the roles of counsellor, confidant, teacher, and in some instances mother, sister, and friend. I write these words and I can feel the weight of my people at this time. We were already faced with challenges of economic downturn. Now, this pandemic has caused an even further negative economic impact to many.

The Point Fortin Borough Council has been doing all in its power to assist Burgesses. We have had many hamper distribution drives. We also received assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, allowing us to distribute meat (chicken) and other food items within our respective Districts. I say Thank You to Senator the Honourable Clarence Rambharat for his ministry’s donation.

Our Member of Parliament for Point Fortin, the Honourable Kennedy Richards Jr., has also been such a great help to many households of our beautiful district. Thank you Mr. Richards.

At this time, I will like to express heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Her Worship the Mayor, Alderman Saleema Thomas and Members of the 11th Point Fortin Borough Council. With so many things happening around us, I was not quite sure how to start my contribution for this issue of our Community Newsletter. One major talking point today is the current global pandemic, COVID-19. However, if you are reading this newsletter, please take a few seconds to be grateful for life. Just for a moment, put all worries and stress on pause and just be grateful to be in the land of the living. Thank God for the ability to see, to hear, to move, to be. Even if you are faced with health challenges, just be grateful for life in this moment. This has been such a trying time for so many of us. It may sometimes feel as though there is no ceasing of the challenges and no breathing space.

I thank you all for all of the support and camaraderie demonstrated over the past few months. You have made the challenges much easier to bear.

We, your representatives, continue to rise to the occasion to go above and beyond the call of duty. But I truly wish to commend members of our communities for also rising to the occasion. I have seen many extend so much care and support, knowing and unknowing to many, truly being a brother’s keeper. It reminds me of stories my grandmother told of sharing a few cups of rice or asking the neighbour for some sugar or salt.

The pandemic has definitely hit us a hard blow and daily I pray for things to return to some level of normalcy. But it would be remiss of me if I do not note that this season has

caused some families to get closer and communities to activate that brotherly love which we can all acknowledge. The Burgesses of the Borough of Point Fortin and Residents of the Constituency at large have demonstrated that “Point is Love”. I must also mention that residents of our neighbouring Constituency of La Brea have also touched lives in such an impactful way.

As I always say, “Love in Action”. I would therefore go a bit further to say that “South is Love”, most definitely.

I choose to remind us of this love for two reasons: To encourage us to allow that love to grow and, so that we can keep mindful about why we should not allow negative elements to separate us. We differ by race, creed, political persuasion and the recent trend of division over the decision to be vaccinated or not. The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago has been doing all in its power to make vaccines available to the nation and we commend every effort.

We are also very grateful for all the work being done by our medical practitioners and front liners. They have been our MVPs during this pandemic.

Grandmothers, grandfathers, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, cousins, friends, community, let love abound. We are only as strong as our community. Let us understand the season. Let us acknowledge and apply the practice of ‘agreeing to disagree’. There is no place for an ‘eye for an eye’ but rather let us love our neighbours as we love ourselves. If you are in need, seek help. If you can help, please do not hesitate to help. It might even be difficult at this time to have faith but hold on. We can overcome this hurdle. However, I am of the view that the solution can only be sought intentionally. We know all the protocols in place to help fight this invisible disease: wear your mask, wash your hands, maintain social distance, sanitize and at your time of choice, get vaccinated. I urge all of us to apply the necessary steps to get the results we all wish to see.

Business owners, self-employed individuals, have you started strategizing for post Covid? Will things return to business as usual? Are your systems before Covid going to be applicable at the end of this pandemic? Are you investing your resources, however much or little, to secure the future of your business? Many persons continue to express how COVID-19 and the current national restrictions have almost crippled their businesses, especially small businesses. I implore you to think of ways to innovate and recreate your brand and service delivery. Write your next steps. Write it on paper. Make the vision plain. There is power in visualizing; it has worked for many successful

individuals around the world. There is no time to waste on trivial matters. This pandemic is teaching us how precious time is and the ability to make haste while possible. Do not wait to find out what is next. Put on your thinking caps. Plan and be ready!

I wish I did not have to reach to this part but it is our sad reality; Condolences to the families who lost loved ones and individuals who lost friends to this virus. Nothing about losing a loved one is easy. God’s grace and strength be multiplied. Those still battling with the virus, fight on, a lot of citizens are praying for your recovery.

To my Burgesses, as your Councillor for this beautiful District Cap-de-Ville/ Fanny Village, I remain committed and resolute in my stance to bring proper representation. You know where my office is located, you know my contact information. As always, I will continue to do my best to help with alleviating your problems and concerns, once it’s within my remit. Before the year ends, once the current restrictions are lifted, you will see various projects (local roads and drains) being undertaken for the financial year 2020/21.

I hope that the initiatives highlighted herein will be appreciated. I say “Thank you” to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development; to the Ministry of Finance; to businesses and to earthly angels who wish to remain anonymous. All of these continue to enable me in the capacity of Councillor, to assist so many families during this trying time.

I offer a special ‘thank you’ also to H&R Drugs, Soultry Shop and Spot On Events and Rentals for sponsoring Surge Issue 2. Thank you for seeing the value in publishing this Community Newsletter and for making my dream a reality once more. This issue focuses the spotlight on Mrs. Penni Beckles-George who recently underwent a successful brain surgery. Mrs. Beckles-George’s story is known to us in our district, by almost everyone in Point Fortin and even other parts of Trinidad and Tobago. Her story invoked a community love that we need to keep enkindled.

To Penni and all my other Burgesses, we are a resilient people, full of energy and positive vibes. Keep your heads up and stick close to one another. Together, hand in hand, not literally at this time but certainly in spirit and social action, we can and we will overcome. We must continuously adjust and adapt to this new way of doing things for as we know, change is constant.

Remember, love knows no boundaries nor holds any malice. We will continue to PRESS!!!

Ready to Start the

Surge On Monday 21st December 2020, the Surge Community Newsletter was launched.

I am grateful to those who supported the initiative and attended the event, among whom were Her Worship the Mayor, Alderman Saleema Thomas, Deputy Mayor, Councillor Leslie Chang Fong, Member of Parliament for Point Fortin the Honourable Kennedy Richards Jr., Point Fortin Constituency Chairman, Mr. Francis Bertrand and Chief Executive Officer of the Point Fortin Borough Corporation, Mrs. Donnamay Taylor.

I extend special thanks to the Honourable Minister Lisa Morris-Julien, Member of Parliament for D’Abadie/ O’Meara, for giving the feature address, to Councillor Aba Kamau (Port-of-Spain City Council) for being the Master of Ceremony and to Ms. Shukura Hernandez for a special dance tribute.

Happily coinciding with the Christmas season, the launch was not only an occasion for joy and to extend messages of goodwill but an opportunity to share gifts with members of the community. As part of our Christmas initiative, my team and I were able to distribute: • 10 tablets • 40 hampers • 50 vouchers • 45 care packages

A Time to Share

Sharing A Little

Christmas Cheer With 2020 being a year of unusual social isolation, I wanted to find a way to bring Christmas Joy especially to our senior citizens. The idea came to bring back “House to House Christmas Carolling.”

While we had to keep our choir numbers small and maintain social distancing staying outside of premises, this action came as a pleasant and welcome surprise to residents who recalled the “long time days.”

ON THE MOVE WITH

Point Fortin Youth Council The Point Fortin Youth Council has been very active in community service, striving to go the extra mile in these economically challenging times. On February 6th 2021, I was happy to accept their invitation to be a part of one of their soup kitchens, this time held in the heart of the borough at Victor Chin Kit Park.

And Once Upon A Time...

We know that the future is in good hands when the youths step up to the tasks at hand. For another of the PFYC’s community reachout initiatives, I was also invited (and accepted) to do a virtual Storytime Session for Kids. I thank them for the opportunity and I look forward to being a part of their future events.

Not Just For Women

WOMAN: Stand Strong!

Amidst all the challenges faced in 2020, one of the most unjust and unacceptable was the rise in Violence Against Women.

Wanting to take a procative approach, I collaborated with Mr. Aaron Cromwell and Martial Arts School Peaceful Warriors to provide an opportunity for women to learn basic self-defense skills in a 6 week course. Knowing that financial constraints would be a hindrance for some, the cost for this event was subsidized with just a nominal fee to participants. I congratulate all the graduates and those who continued the classes.

PROTECTING

Mother Earth After witnessing the illegal dumping of waste on Sunset Beach, Fanny Village at the close of 2020, I found it necessary to host a discussion on the importance of the environment and our role in protecting it. It was my distinct pleasure to have my friend and a professional in the field, Derval Barzey, share on this very important topic.

We streamed live on Monday 11th January, 2020 at 8pm on my Facebook Page.This was viewed and well-received by over 1000 persons.

Two months later, on March 13th, the Point Fortin Borough Council joined its Local Area Planning and Development Committee which collaborated with RBC Bank and local groups for a Clean-Up at Hollywood Beach, Point Ligoure.

The event was in sync with the 2021 World Environment Day theme — The Ecosystem Restoration.The Covid-19 pandemic has reminded us that nature provides the essential structure to support human development, hence, we should focus on the rebalancing of our damaged ecological systems.

Not Just For Women

An Opportunity to Share Insights:

Curbing the Cycle of Violence In 2020, on December 10th when the UN observes Human Rights Day, I had the chance to be a part a roundtable discussion on Gender-Based Violence.

In addition to building ideas on awareness and ways to curb the brutal cycle, I was able to gain useful information that I could share with women in my community about the different channels of support available to them if needed.

The meeting took place at Port-of-Spain City Hall and was aired live on Facebook. I sat amongst “a dynamic panel of women” as it was described by host Aba Kamau, Councillor for Belmont South. The other panellists included Alderman Aasha Permanand also of the Port of Spain City Council; Councillor Dana O'Neil-Gervais of the Siparia Regional Corporation; Acting Inspector Lystra Bridglal of the Gender-Based Violence Unit of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service; Ms. Nadira Muhammad, Principal of Inspired Minds Institute and Councillor Kerry-Anne Roberts-Kasmally of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation.

Speaking Up, Speaking On On the heels of Gender Based Violence Discussion, I was also invited to share ideas at the Women Speak Up virtual event themed “Reflections on the Year 2020”.

These reflections revolved around finding one’s way forward in today’s world and the benefits of social support systems both at the personal and professional level.

I express my deepest thanks to the event host, Mrs. Halcian Joseph-Clost of Canada, for the invitation and for the opportunity to speak alongside Coquitlam City Councillor (Canada), Trish Mandewo.

In March this year, Make A Difference (MAD) Model TT Events hosted a Teen Webinar during the Easter Vacation that highlighted personal development and awareness subjects. On Thursday April 8th, I served as a guest speaker, sharing on the topics of Confidence: Self-Development, Self-Esteem, Self-Respect and Self-Love.

LIFE LESSONS FOR

Women of Tomorrow In celebration of International Women’s Day 2021, I conceived the idea of having an event that would prepare girls for their transition into ladies and leaders in future years. The name “Flats to Heels” was born, and the event took place on March 6th.

Facilitated by the CEO of the Blossoming Leaders Learning Institute, Mrs. Shanice Sylvester, — to whom I am so grateful — girls from the ages of 9 to 15 received training in the areas of Basic Etiquette, Dining Etiquette and Dressing for Success.

Also in attendance and adding their own seasoned morsels of inspiration and advice were the Point Fortin Borough Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer — Mrs. Donnamay Taylor and Disaster Management Co-ordinator — Ms. Haze Ann Cummings.

Issue Highlight

EVER GRATEFUL AS SHE KEEPS

GOING AGAINST THE ODDS Penni Omega Beckles-George, a 35-year

old wife and mother of three children of ages 9, 7 and 3, is thankful for all the support and love that she has received as she endured a difficult time in her life.

On September 2nd, 2019 while coincidentally at the hospital for another issue, Penni started to experience numbness in her right limbs. An MRI lead to the discovery of her having not one but two deleterious brain conditions; a Meningioma Brain Tumor and a Cerebral Brain Aneurysm.

While a brain tumor can cause nerves and vessels to be compressed resulting in headaches, weakness and adverse effects upon one’s senses and speech, an aneurysm can also cause severe and sudden headaches, dizziness, sensitivity to light, nausea and vomiting, seizures, blurred vision, confusion, a stiff neck and even be lethal if ruptured. Indeed, Penni experienced severe headaches, mobility issues and weakness.

On Friday 19th March 2021, Penni fell ill and was unable to speak properly. When a benefactor — Mrs. Belinda George-Lennon — called to wish her well, she realised something was wrong and decided to call the Mayor of the Point Fortin Borough Corporation. The Mayor, Her Worship Alderman Saleema Thomas, arranged to have Penni escorted by the Municipal Police to the Point Fortin Hospital. She was then rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital and warded for 10 days while undergoing further tests.

On Wednesday April 21st 2021, Penni successfully underwent emergency surgery (embolization) for the Cerebral Brain Aneurysm at Caribbean Heart Care Institute.

This did not come at an easy cost. Approximately $200,000.00 was needed for just the embolization procedure which is not offered in the state hospitals and had to be done privately.

While her journey was challenging, it was made more bearable by the efforts of her devout friend Shenelle Mohammed who fuelled a fundraising drive that further spurred others. Family, friends, and well-wishers from all over (especially Point Fortin), were willing to show love to the humble-hearted Penni.

I Can’t Stop Saying Thanks...

“I am so thankful to all who played a part in my Brain Surgery Journey. My daughters suffer from seizures and asthma; my son also has bouts of tonsillitis. Now I am able to care for them.

My husband Daniel “Junior Sawic” George, played a wonderful part in my journey.

With the up and down trips that I had to make, doctor visits, tests, etc., he was there. My family, my friends and my in-laws all played a big part in this time of my life.

My 9-year-old daughter, Faith, made a video, about Saving Her Mother. The video went viral after her father posted it on social media. He had no idea what she was doing until he spotted her making the video. I was not home at the time, but when I saw it my eyes were filled with tears. The more people heard her video, the more love was shown.

Friends and family, those near and far, made the time a lot easier.

Now I have to wait for September, when I will be informed if the coil used to block the aneurysm remains in place and did not shift. I still have some tests to do. So far, I’m just thankful. I used to limp and now I’m walking properly. I still have some pain because of my spine problem but I am walking much better.

I thank Mrs. Bryana Fortune-John, for highlighting my story and also for helping out with some food supplies from time to time. By extension, to the Point Fortin Borough Corporation, Thank You! I wish I could call everybody’s name who played a part, but there are so many and I don’t want to forget any names.

I am truly thankful to everyone, God knows you and he will bless you all.

A time bomb was in my head and it could have burst at any time but Thanks to God, the team of doctors coiled it, to prevent it from bursting.

I’m alive! And I’m grateful!”

Penni is very grateful to every one of the loving persons who gave whatever they could towards her cause among whom were the Member of Parliament, the Honourable Kennedy Richards Jr. and some former National Footballers now over 70 years old.

Today, Penni is recovering. Her right leg and hand can function normally again.

Even though she must yet undergo the Brain Tumor surgery, she remains thankful that each day is less painfaul than before and looks forward to a brighter future.

CONGRATS! IN ORDER Following his success in the by-election for the District of Hollywood on Monday 25th January 2021, Deputy Mayor Leslie Chang Fong transitioned to Councillor and was sworn in to his new role on February 9th 2021.

With his former position of Alderman becoming vacant, Mrs. Joanne Bowen Delysia was appointed into the position on February 16th 2021.

Just a month ago my fellow Councillor, Reynold Carrington, was appointed as Assistant Coach of the TT National Men’s Football Team. Councillor Carrington is a former national football player himself with foreign club caps and a wealth of coaching experience.

June was also a big month for our Honourable MP Kennedy Richards Jr. as he was appointed to serve on the Joint Select Committees for Energy Affairs and National Security.

I congratulate all of my colleagues and wish them the best in their new roles!

We Must Forge Forward...

APRIL 30TH 2021

For two consecutive years now, the Covid-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of our annual Borough Anniversary Celebrations in all its gala and glory. Still, it behooves us, the Point Fortin Borough Council, to recognize the 41st anniversary of the Borough. As we strive towards a better future, we reflect on all that has been done and all that we still seek to accomplish, charting our way forward as we adapt to the challenges of the day.

We rise to the task of serving our nation as we aspire to enhance our Borough of Point Fortin, making it the “Preferred Place to Live, Work, Invest and Recreate.”

Get creative to get pandemic message across JANELLE DE SOUZA SUNDAY 6 JUNE 2021

The leaders in this covid19 crisis need to find a balance between severe and empathetic in order to persuade more people to follow the health restrictions and guidelines, says behavioural therapist Dr Stacy Murray.

They also need to vary their presentations to affect people of different backgrounds and learning styles.

Murray said each person has a different trigger that would cause them to change their mindset and behaviour, and to do this takes a lot of time and effort.

Asked why some people still disregard the health restrictions and guidelines, she believed people do not want to accept what is happening in the country. To accept would challenge their mental state and that is something many people could not handle.

“Generally people have become numb. Covid19 is all over the world, it’s not going anywhere so it’s like it has become part of life. So you are no longer afraid of what it can do to you, or you just switch off your emotions when it comes to covid so you don’t have to face the reality of what is taking place and you just continue living like normal. Because if you have to sit and think about it, you’re going to be affected psychologically.”

In addition, she said the culture in Trinidad and Tobago (TT) was to challenge authority and people do not like to be told what to do.

“I think the leaders understand the culture of TT and that is the reason why the presentations are geared towards that. If they bring it more subtle, I don’t think it will be effective at all. The message also has to be continuously repeated, to which I think they are doing a good job.”

Murray told Sunday Newsday if the tone of the presentations is too empathetic, people would not see it as genuine. It may win over some of the most vulnerable in society who want to know they are being seen and understood but others may see it as part of a political agenda.

She suggests focussing on different aspects of the population at different press conferences as well as changing their presentations – which have now become routine.

For example, use an empathetic tone to appeal to the vulnerable today, use numbers and finance and a more stern tone for the businessmen on the next, research and statistics for the more educated and research-oriented citizens, a more simple presentation for children.

“It all depends on the population. That’s why I said creating a balance would reach the majority of the people of different classes in the population as opposed to staying on the extreme ends. Because whoever the message hits and reaches, they would change.

“Then there are some who, all the graphs and research would not change anything because they don’t understand what is being said. Not everyone is visual, not everyone can sit and listen, so they have to make sure their presentation is a mixture to capture all the audience’s learning styles.”

She said children also need the information because behaviour change starts with them so the leaders should take some time to make a few presentations with simple language, that are more lively or use vehicles like animation or comics.”

Councillors bear brunt of burden Councillors on the other hand, have only empathy for their burgesses.

Sunday Newsday spoke to four local government councillors who said they are in continuous contact with the people in their community and have had no reports of resistance to the regulations in their areas. During this time of tightened restrictions, they all can be contacted on their Facebook pages, via WhatsApp, or telephone calls.

And they only go out to visit sites when necessary and they follow health guidelines using masks, physical distancing and hand sanitiser.

United National Congress (UNC) councillor for Curepe/ Pasea, J-lynn Roopnarine said the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation also has virtual meetings on Microsoft Team.

“Before covid, I walked my entire district and gave out my call cards to almost every constituent.

Because some people lost their jobs because of the pandemic, and others are home until July 4, a lot of

people are reaching out to me. They need assistance, they are crying out, they have nothing to eat.”

She is working with St Augustine MP Khadijah Ameen to distribute some of the 400 food hampers and 130 chickens provided by the government.

Some need food, some want to apply for grants but do not have internet or computer access. She prints the forms and delivers it to people, helps them fill out the forms, returns to her office and sends it to the relevant authorities. She admitted that some people could get aggressive or demanding because of the situations they are facing but she does not react to that.

“I do not quarrel or lash out. I try my best to understand, to get them to tell me what they really need. It’s been really hard in this time. A lot of people got laid off or are not working because businesses are closed. I understand how these people feel and wish I could do more. I wish more resources could be provided for us but the corporation does not have the finances to do so.”

She called on the government to release funds to the regional corporation so it could purchase food and make more hampers.

UNC councillor for St Augustine South/ Piarco/ St Helena Richard Rampersad has been supporting families in need of assistance through various food drives he organised through his office. Last year, the corporation also teamed up with SEWA TT and other organisations to distribute cloth masks and hand sanitisers.

However, he said his job is not only about making sure a road is paved, a drain is cleaned, or garbage is collected.

It is also about the human element.

'It all boils down to listening' Jeniece Scott, the People’s National Movement (PNM) councillor for Calvary, said in addition to Facebook and people being able to contact her on WhatsApp, she and other councillors in the Arima Borough Corporation set up WhatsApp groups.

She either started or joined established groups for each of the communities in her area and use it to share news and information, as well as to ensure people know how to get the assistance they need.

She said before the current covid19 spike, she would randomly visit burgesses to check in on them. Now she randomly calls them to find out how they are doing.

“It all boils down to listening. A lot of times people just want to talk to someone. When they are talking is when you really start to pick up on the nuances of what is needed even if they don’t explicitly say so. At that point my brain goes into overdrive to determine how I could help them.”

She said the sense of community is very strong in her area enabling her to reach out businesses, individuals and other partnerships she has developed. She also use her councillor stipend to help as many people as she could.

Scott said in addition the corporation had the help of several MPs, especially Arima MP Pennelope Beckles.

PNM councillor for Cap-de-Ville/ Fanny Village, Bryana Fortune-John, also created WhatsApp groups with burgesses in her communities, and has a broadcast list to get information to relevant people. She also has a closed group on Facebook for the Point Fortin business community so they could help support one another.

She has been distributing food hampers, chicken, meals, and has helped her burgesses out of pocket. The Point Fortin Borough Corporation is also in the process of looking for ways to collect hampers and vouchers to distribute.

“I also listen to people. I’m a woman, a mother, and a wife so I know what it is like to have to provide for your children. Sometimes I just cry with them. I have also been referring people to counsellors and encouraging them to think about the future, what is their next step, think about post-covid because this has been a serious blow to people’s mental health.”

On June 6th 2021, the above article was printed (and digitally posted) in the Sunday Newsday. I was one of 4 Councillors featured from different districts across Trinidad. We brought to light the challenges faced by our burgesses and the strategies that we have used to help bring relief. Going the Distance

With Our Elders at Heart When another round of public vaccination went underway in June, the Point Fortin Borough Council, led by Mayor Alderman Saleema Thomas recognized the need to make the process easier for senior citizens. A decision was taken to provide assistance for seniors requiring transport to and from the Health Centre. This initiative, dubbed the “Get on Board the Vaccination Drive,” lasted for one week from the 21st to 25th June. Our efforts were reported by the three main news houses.

In the Time of Covid-19 FIGHTING INFECTIOUS DISEASES:

Resetting Our Personal Health Practices A Public Health Perspective

As Covid-19 continues to distress societies around the world, particularly those within developing nations, it becomes ever more essential to determine how we can best treat with, aim to prevent and yet plan for similar future threats.

We should always wash our hands after these actions.

The emergence of Covid-19 together with recent epidemics of Ebola and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), represent an increasing occurrence in the outbreak of infectious diseases just within the last decade. This points to an ever-changing relationship with man and the environment, precipitated by economic activity and territorial expansion and pronounced by their resulting effect of climate change and populations’ increased exposure to microbes, specifically, pathogens. In the case of Covid-19, the pathogens causing the infection are of a virus type but these may also include other imperceptible organisms such as bacteria and fungi.

Injury Treatment. Minor cuts should be washed and bandaged. Any major cuts, wounds or bites should be medically examined. We should avoid picking at any wounds, bruises or blemishes to speed up healing and prevent the entry of pathogens.

Infectious diseases, primarily those that affect the respiratory system, account for millions of global deaths annually, especially in lower income countries. Persons who have compromised immune systems — whether by already suffering from life-threatening conditions such as heart disease or cancer, or by having to take certain medicines — are more susceptible to infections. As we have come to be highly aware, these infectious diseases are transmitted in three main ways: • directly from person-to-person • indirectly through surfaces, equipment and supplies • through the air Still, as we go forward, the threat of infectious diseases can be reduced by following key health principles.

Good Personal Hygiene: The First Line of Defense.

The best armour to safeguard one’s health is having a good personal hygiene regimen. This will not only hinder infection but also its spread: Proper Handwashing. In addition to the customary intervals of this activity — before food preparation, before and after meals, after the use of the bathroom, after tasks which soil the hands — we should also put it into practice at less obvious periods. These include after sneezing, coughing or blowing/ cleaning the nose, after touching pets and after caring for sick persons. It is also crucial to note that handwashing is most effective with the use of soap whereby the palms, wrists, spaces between the fingers, fingertips, nails and back of hands are well lathered. These areas should then be vigorously scrubbed for at least 20 seconds, rinsed under running water and the hands then thoroughly dried.

Cough and Sneeze Etiquette. Ideally, we should always cover a cough or sneeze with a tissue that must be disposed

Item Usage. Avoid sharing utensils with others while in use and avoid touching items (napkins, handkerchiefs and similar) that have been used by other persons.

Healthier Environment: Healthier People Maintaining cleanliness in our environment is another powerful deterrent in the proliferation of germs and therefore, the spread of infectious disease. While we can focus on our immediate spaces — homes, offices, classrooms and those in which we spend extensive time — we must also think about the related habitats and the wider ecosystem.

Cleanliness in our backyards, of our drainage systems and on our roadways can have advantageous effects on our waterways (rivers and seas) – and on our forests (flora and fauna). This underlines why citizens must refrain from the illegal dumping of waste (bulky or otherwise) and rather engage the national Public Health Departments in finding solutions for proper disposal.

Cleaning, Sanitizing and Disinfecting: Know the Difference.

Although often used interchangeably, there are some notable differences in the definitions of “cleaning,” “sanitizing” and “disinfecting.” Knowing these differences may better inform our product choices for each activity: Cleaning. This refers to the removal of soil, debris, remnants of food or unwanted particles from a surface, with (or without) the use of (solvent) chemicals mixed with water and applied force. For example, we clean our teeth by brushing with toothpaste and rinsing, we clean countertops by scrubbing/wiping; we clean our clothing by washing and we clean rugs by vacuuming.

Sanitizing. This is the act of applying compounds (such as a diluted bleach mixture) to a surface for the purpose of reducing germs in concert with public health standards.

Sanitizing may follow an initial cleaning process. For example, a table may be firstly cleaned, then sanitized. A bathroom is cleaned, then sanitized. We may sanitize our hands without a need to first “clean” them.

And Remember...

Disinfecting. Similar to sanitizing, disinfecting specifically refers to the reduction of microorganisms on inanimate objects, particularly those exposed to bodily fluids. Compounds that are more potent than those used for sanitizing may be needed for this purpose. For example, we may disinfect toilets, sinks, bathrooms and drains.

Keep Your Guards Up There is no guarantee for the total elimination of germs and microorganisms. However, every act of cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting and every improved approach to personal hygiene and environmental care can significantly reduce the transmission of and our exposure to infectious diseases. When we make healthier lifestyle choices — doing regular physical exercise and improving our diets — our level of protection becomes substantially boosted. While science offers us a solution to overcome the current pandemic in the form of vaccines as it has done through the last century, let us submit to the adage, “Prevention is better than cure”. We may not be able to escape the diseases of the future but by being more conscious with our health practices, we may be better prepared to counteract them.

While the government strives to vaccinate most of our national population to arrive at herd immunity and prevent hospitalisation in the event of infection, we must still follow the Public Health Protocols that are in place to decrease the risk of contracting the Covid-19 virus. We should also strive to keep informed of the official news and updates given by our Public Health officials as the situation progresses. We still have a long way to go, so let’s keep it up!

In the Time of Covid-19

Coping With Covid In addition to millions of lives being lost to the virus, Covid-19 has overturned the living of so many people, plunging them into economic and social turmoil. Below, some of the residents of my district share their experiences in the wake of the pandemic with the hope that others may feel less desolate in their own setbacks and that they can offer a measure of comfort to their fellow burgesses. I am deeply appreciative to those who have shared....

“Covid-19 has had a very devastating effect on me and my family.It has forced my business to close for an extended period, which means no income, and very little to live on... Meanwhile, we still have to pay all utility bills (lights, water, phone, business rent, food, gasoline, etc.). The banks are not giving any deferrals for outstanding payments. Our two trained workers cannot wait on us for an income and we may lose them very soon as they too have families. Added to this is the reality of living with this deadly disease that can strike at any time. Home-schooling our 10-year old daughter is another challenge as it seems the teachers are challenged to make the children grasp the work quickly and SEA is quickly approaching with the children almost 1 year behind; may God help us all.”

GIVING... AS WE RECEIVE A second lockdown just after a year meant that many citizens across our nation would encounter an even more critical period in their lives as jobs and income would once again be put on pause. In a national response to this dilemma, the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries disbursed food supplies from which I was able to distribute 130 soup & meat packs to 65 families in my district. I also shared 25 grocery hampers donated by Heritage Petroleum. I thank both agencies for their generosity. I would also like to thank my secretary, Aleena Munroe, who continues to assist me greatly in the call of duty.

Growing HIS OWN GARDEN Among the many people who have opted to grow their own kitchen garden during the pandemic is Mr. Nedd Philip of Augustine Drive in Cap-De-Ville.

On February 10th, Her Worship the Mayor and I visited Mr. Philip to view his highly impressive garden. The mayor was happy to note that his venture was in line with the “Grow Your Own Food” initiative which she launched in November 2020. We presented Mr. Philip with some additional seeds from the Ministry of Agriculture and we are grateful to him for “green’ gifts to us.
