Bij de nog tot eind deze maand lopende overzichtsexpo Paroles van de Frans-Berlijnse kunstenaar Saâdane Afif kan je je eigen soundtrack bij elkaar jammen in een echte muziekstudio of gewoon luisteren naar wat zijn onthaastende klankinstallaties je in het oor fluisteren. Op 7 en 8 april kan je je er dan weer op de Independent Label Market onderdompelen in de eigenzinnige, te koesteren wereld van onafhankelijke labels als Consouling Sounds, Okraina Records, SDBAN en Third Type Tapes die steeds meer opgang maken. Je kan er een praatje slaan met de noeste werkers achter die platenfirma’s, je vinylvoorraad verversen of wat cassettes inslaan, lezingen bijwonen of gewoon bouncen op de beats van enkele doordraaiende dj’s. Les Nuits zit opgezadeld met een quarterlife, maar gelukkig niet met een crisis.

De concertbaken midden in de urban jungle van Brussel steekt de lont van zijn 25e editie aan met enkele feestjes waar Belgische bands die op het lentefestival aantreden achter de draaitafels kruipen. Op vrijdag 6 april spinnen onder meer de Brusselaar met Congolese roots Tanguy Haesevoets, die vorig jaar de wereld naar de hoofdstad bracht als Témé Tan, het elektropoptrio Ulysse, het zonnige Sonnfjord, stedelijke soundtrackbedenker Haring en ex-Soldier’s Heart en Warhaus-sidekick Sylvie Kreusch het zwarte goud in Café des Halles aan Sint-Goriks. Aurore Clément sera à Bruxelles pour Chantal?, un double hommage à la grande cinéaste qui s’est éteinte en 2015.

Elle introduira la version restaurée des Rendez-vous d’Anna, le film intime d’Akerman sur une réalisatrice jeune et pourtant terriblement seule. À l’occasion d’un concert musical et visuel, Aurore Clément et la violoncelliste Sonia Wieder-Atherton dialogueront avec des images de Saute ma ville, le court-métrage explosif tourné par Akerman à l’âge de 18 ans. Activiste de la scène hip-hop bruxelloise, Isha a déjà connu plusieurs vies avant de profiter d’une reconnaissance amplement méritée. Adoubé par les siens, le rappeur lève aujourd’hui le voile sur les dix morceaux de La Vie Augmente Vol.2, nouvel album infusé de punchlines fracassantes et d’invités sacrément doués. U

n temps connu sous le pseudo Psmaker, Isha Pilipili s’est construit une solide réputation autour de son prénom. Révélé l’an dernier à la faveur du premier volet de La Vie Augmente, le rappeur bruxellois confirme à présent tous les espoirs placés en lui. Entre confessions intimes (La Maladie Mangeuse de Chair) et tube ultime (Tosma), Isha impose son style sur un deuxième volet sans temps mort. Seul derrière le micro ou accompagné des héros de la scène locale (Caballero & JeanJass, Zwangere Guy), l’artiste plante une plume affûtée dans l’encre noire. Entre légèreté et profondeur, souvenirs d’enfance et vie d’adulte, le rappeur met ses tripes au service d’un rap sans concession.

Avant de vous consacrer pleinement à la musique, vous étiez employé par le Samusocial bruxellois. La gestion calamiteuse de cette association d’aide aux démunis a-t-elle précipité votre changement d’orientation ?

ISHA : J’ai beaucoup donné à ce dispositif urbain de lutte contre l’exclusion. J’ai bossé avec des

SDF pendant quatre ans et, jusqu’à l’année dernière, je me suis occupé de réfugiés syriens, irakiens et afghans. Dans ma vie, je me suis souvent mieux occupé des autres que de moi-même.

Grâce à ce boulot, j’ai compris l’utilité que je pouvais avoir dans la société. Ceci étant, je souhaitais changer d’air depuis un moment.

Les soupçons de corruption qui planent sur la direction n’ont pas joué un rôle déterminant dans ma décision. En tant que travailleur, j’étais au courant de ces pratiques frauduleuses. Quand l’affaire a éclaté dans les médias, je pense qu’aucun employé du Samusocial n’a vraiment été surpris…

Depuis quelques mois, la culture hip-hop bruxelloise s’exporte au-delà des frontières nationales.

Le tube Bruxelles Arrive a révélé une véritable fourmilière artistique. Vu de l’intérieur, quel regard portez-vous sur ce mouvement ?

ISHA : Quand j’ai sorti le premier

volume de La Vie Augmente, une certaine euphorie s’emparait de la scène bruxelloise. C’était au printemps 2017. Un an plus tard, le phénomène a pris de l’ampleur.

Aujourd’hui, le rap bruxellois est

HIP-HOP gage de qualité en Belgique, mais aussi à l’étranger. Son rayonnement ne cesse de s’amplifier.

Personnellement, j’adhère totalement à l’esprit du mouvement. Nous formons une famille.

Et je suis certain qu’elle va encore s’agrandir au cours des prochaines années.

Récemment, vous avez participé à la bande originale inspirée par le film Tueurs. Cette compilation regroupe la génération dorée du rap belge (Roméo Elvis, Coely, Damso, Hamza, etc.). Que retenez-vous de cette expérience dans le monde du cinéma ?

ISHA : Participer à ce projet, c’était

une chance unique. Sur la nouvelle scène bruxelloise, je suis un des plus anciens. Moi, j’ai grandi au contact d’un film comme La Haine, par exemple. En 1995, les patrons du rap hexagonal (Assassin, IAM, Ministère A.M.E.R… NDLR) se sont appuyés sur le scénario de ce long-métrage pour sculpter une compilation dense et ultra-générationnelle. D’une certaine manière, le cinéma a formé ma culture musicale. Pour moi, l’expérience Tueurs était donc extrêmement symbolique. C’est comme un juste retour des choses.

Vos deux albums sont estampillés La Vie Augmente. D’où vient ce titre qui résonne comme un leitmotiv ?

ISHA : Il découle de LVA, un morceau issu du premier volet. Il est assez représentatif de l’ambivalence de mon univers. Au niveau des textes, déjà, on retrouve ce contraste entre le ressenti de l’enfance et le vécu de l’adulte. Les paroles, plutôt crues, côtoient une conscience sociale assez poussée.

Certains pensent que je suis un adepte du double jeu. Mais c’est faux. Je suis comme ça au naturel.

J’entretiens un côté sombre,

réfléchi et philosophe et une face plus exubérante, dévergondée et désinvolte. De façon plus personnelle, La Vie Augmente est une phrase tirée de La Vie est Belle, un film réalisé par mon oncle, Dieudonné Mweze Ngangura. C’est un petit classique du cinéma congolais qui met en scène le chanteur Papa Wemba. Pour moi, c’était important de lui rendre hommage. Je tenais à remercier mon oncle pour tout ce qu’il a fait pour moi. Quand j’étais au creux de la vague, il m’a fait comprendre beaucoup de choses...

Récemment, le rappeur Damso s’est retrouvé au cœur d’une polémique mêlant rap et football. Il était notamment pointé du doigt pour ses textes, jugés inadmissibles par certains. Dans ce contexte, craignez-vous que vos morceaux soient mal interprétés par une partie du public ?

ISHA : Traditionnellement, je lie

mon écriture à des images. J’utilise les codes du rap: des mots que certains prennent pour de la vulgarité… Le rap est un genre qui passe par un vocable provoquant, ouvertement ironique et exubérant.

Montrer quelqu’un du doigt et lui porter préjudice parce qu’il utilise des codes sémantiques propres à un mode d’expression, je trouve ça bas. C’est un manque d’ouverture d’esprit. Ça témoigne d’une vision sélective, bien alimentée en clichés. Nous vivons dans une société où le stéréotype est roi: un monde où l’on met souvent en avant le rappeur le plus lisse, le moins vulgaire, en se disant que ça passera mieux. On se contente du discours platonique et politiquement correct. Généralement, c’est d’un ennui profond. Mais au moins, ça n’offusque personne.

Sauf que, dans les faits, le rap se joue ailleurs...

Vincent Glowinski, the artist who surfaced in 2010 when he was forced to cast off the skin of “urban legend” Bonom, is many things rolled into one. The exhibition “Sketches” ties this impressive tangle of manifestations together with great intimacy. — KURT SNOEKX • PHOTO: IVAN PUT

eing an image and staying an image is foolish.” Vincent Glowinski utters these words more than once during our encounter at Mathilde Hatzenberger Gallery. It is a way of rebutting the bartering over his identity, patterns of expectations, and attempts at recovery. “During the exhibition at the Botanique, somebody wrote, very bluntly, in the guestbook: ‘Go back to the streets.’ It attests to a kind of imagined purity that in no way represents humans in all their complexity.

I am not the pure idea that some people have of me. Life is to be found precisely in the continuous transition from one thing to another. I am many different things at once.”

This dynamism, and this elusiveness, is at the very core of Vincent Glowinski and his artistic practice, which ranges from drawings and sculptures to dance productions (under the wings of Wim Vandekeybus’s Ultima Vez) and performances (including with jazz drummer Teun Verbruggen in Duo à l’encre). It also extends to graffiti – the discipline he practiced under the moniker Bonom until 2010, declaring the public space of Paris (where he was born) and Brussels (where he moved to

study at La Cambre when he was 19) to be his canvas, and conjuring immense portraits of animals and skeletons in breath-taking locations. This dynamic practice is also clearly in evidence at Mathilde Hatzenberger Gallery.

In this intimate setting, he is taking his first steps in the Brussels gallery scene, after institutional exhibitions at L’iselp in 2014 (“Bonom, le singe boiteux”, with his partner in crime, photographer Ian Dykmans) and the Botanique in 2016 (“Mater Museum”, with his mother, Agnès Debizet).

However small the exhibition “Sketches” may appear initially, it has a huge impact. Because what you see is not all that you see. Because the drawings, collages, and sculptures reach out beyond this space. Because they contain a vitality and an inspiration that squirm, claw, or reluctantly find their way to your heart. Take the train track in the window, on which little blocks serve as carriages, piled up carved wooden dolls take your breath away as burial mounds, and the wolf marionette, also made from gathered wood, serves as the locomotive.

on which a naked woman strokes herself, or the sketches that make the soul-stirring graffiti of the emaciated, naked man at the Hallepoort/ porte de Hal loom large. It is in this cluster of interrelated forms that “Sketches” reaches straight for the core: drawing. “That is where it all starts,” Vincent Glowinski says, “whether the work then evolves into sculpture, graffiti, stories, or performances. Drawing is what brings about the movement and narration.”

Did you actually start out in drawing or graffiti?

VINCENT GLOWINSKI: I started doing graffiti, letters, when I was at school, not doing anything of any great interest at all. It was a kind of game, a way of self-discovery. I stopped after two years. The letters were not enough. At the time I was taking drawing classes, as a preparation for arts school, and I took those drawings back to the streets, combining the two elements. Graffiti was a way to explore the city, to climb, to break into abandoned areas and buildings. It redraws the city, changes its face. When you spend all your time balancing on gutters, you start living completely differently. I integrated all this movement and scale into my drawings, as the mark of my journeys.

That sounds like it is still a necessity.

GLOWINSKI: Well, graffiti is the most complete activity for me. Artistically, socially… Graffiti is the answer to everything. But it is also very difficult because there are so many boundaries and so many transgressions. It doesn’t stop at the wall, reaching and painting the place itself, but you also have to authorize yourself to do it and to paint precisely that subject. So it is more difficult, but also the most right. The price you pay for all this is fear. I am not always ready. It requires somewhat violent emotions. Gentle thoughts aren’t enough to make me do it.

[Laughs] That is precisely why it comes in waves, shocks, and intense moments. It is the response to a profound feeling of dominance, in the city and in life; uncompromising, autonomous. That is artistic freedom…or rather liberation. When it works, I feel a profound sense of relief and I am at peace with the world.

painted enormous tableaux on Brussels’s façades. Murals that looked like they came straight from a book of fables or myths and were bursting with playfulness, profundity, poignancy, and soul. “The last painting I did was deeply symbolic: the quartered gorilla opposite the KVS. Because once I was unmasked, I had already been assimilated and recuperated as an image, politically. I felt as though I was no longer my own. That ape had no volume, it was two-dimensional, strung up, like Bonom’s skin. A skin that I myself had shed. I was elsewhere, and Bonom was dead.”

A period followed in which Vincent Glowinski left the streets, but he later returned, dressed in black, to paint black paintings. “It was very rough, just paint on a wall. Like phantoms, as though the subjects had no bodies. Imagination was gone and it had been replaced with a violent confrontation with the city. A bad accident brought some calm. I ended up in more institutional projects and started making productions. People constantly addressed me as Bonom, but I no longer recognized the name. I was no longer that character; I no longer wore a mask.”

Is the moment when you started drawing people linked to the removal of that mask and the fact that you became more intimate?

GLOWINSKI: It was always intimate, but I did start accepting that more. People are much harder to draw. You can mess up an animal, but not a person. The reactions to people are also very different, everything becomes much more serious. But for me they are the same subjects and the same emotions. The animals were always metaphors, like the fables of La Fontaine. But with animals there is always a kind of detachment. A bloodied animal is acceptable, a bloodied person is a terror.

The first person I painted was the masturbating woman on Louizalaan/avenue Louise. It was very intimate and very symbolic. Graffiti has always been an intimate act. But people quickly get used to a big whale on the sheeting of a scaffold, it gets assimilated. That is unbearable to me. Because the act is still a transgression. I overstep my boundaries to do this. Graffiti and street art have changed so much, just like the public’s appreciation, while I remain a wounded individual in society. It drives me crazy when people say: “Oh, that’s beautiful, keep up the good work.” That is unacceptable.

[Laughs] Then you take it up a notch.

You are looking for a reaction?

GLOWINSKI: If I start painting, it is my reaction.

But there is also a reaction from the audience.

GLOWINSKI: There has to be some kind of reciprocity, yes. The action that I do has to be palpable. If I cut my arm off because I feel pain and people react: “Great, keep up the good

work,” there is a problem. The other person is supposed to feel that pain with you. When I cut myself in the stomach, the other has at least to feel some stomach cramp. I can’t be the only one suffering.

THE PHANTOM That pain is palpable. So is the euphoria. As are the fear, the passion, the rage, and the sadness.

At Mathilde Hatzenberger, there are six sketches that refer to one of the most penetrating works that Vincent Glowinski gave the city.

“Three years before I made that graffiti, I had made a similar sketch of my father, naked, with his hands covering his genitals. But I didn’t dare to make it into a painting. He had just died, and it was too intense, also for my family.

I could not appropriate it to that extent. But when I found the sketch again later, I still felt that same emotion. The painting at the Hallepoort/porte de Hal is the result of the idea to stop painting. One last symbolic work. I redrew the head so that it no longer looked like

him, but became more of an idea – my father from certain perspectives: the Shoah, nudity, humiliation, death. You see somebody floating, as though they are rising up out of a crematorium chimney. It is completely different to the woman on Louizalaan/avenue Louise, who is very dominant. This is a subject that is floating, he is dead, a phantom.”

That same image was also exhibited in marionette form at the “Yo!” exhibition at Bozar.

GLOWINSKI: That was actually its original form.

When my father died, I sculpted his portrait, like a little reincarnation of him. The work at the Hallepoort/porte de Hal is the representation of that marionette. The same subject can take on different forms and a different life.

Sometimes I have a greater need to have a small marionette that fits in my hand, sometimes the work has to spit the world right in the face. These are all feelings, intuitions. But the same subjects recur. It is as though the subject is in the air and can adopt different forms as it

There are many references to the Shoah in your work.

GLOWINSKI: My work has multiple subjects, and that is one of them. I have a mixed background, Jewish and Catholic, and it is expressed in my visual language, which combines the Gospel and Greek mythology with the Jewish eradication of all imagery. Thanks to those mixed roots, I can access the world of the image beyond that enormous prohibition, that huge grey monochrome. That visual language, or its absence, is there all the time.

And it belongs to you and yet…

GLOWINSKI: It doesn’t, precisely. It prohibits and authorizes.

THE COURT JESTER That is the knot in Vincent Glowinski’s artistic existence. The constant movement between prohibition and authorization, between acceptance and censure, between embrace and the urge for independence. A free spirit with an overwhelming artistic vision and the visual language to express it with both integrity and impact, but also – very simply – a person who is part of society and searches for ever-changing ways to survive in it.

At the end of the spring, that paradox will result in a commission from the City of Brussels. “It is a commission for the public space and that changes everything. In the public space, I don’t feel inclined to adapt myself. It has to come completely from me. Because these are my most intimate feelings. But intimacy is unacceptable in public space, so it will be difficult. I still have to make the work, and perhaps I am talking about it prematurely, but at the moment I am thinking about a work packed with symbols, hidden messages, and multiple interpretations that brings the position of the artist to the fore. Like the ape, the subject

that escapes, and the image, the skin that remains as an envelope and surface. I feel as though my position – prohibited but recognized – is like that of the court jester, the ape on duty but also a figure who is in a unique position as the only person who is allowed to criticize the king. My work becomes a critique, accepted but ultimately not really acceptable. The more my trajectory develops in Brussels, the more paradoxical my position becomes. And the more interesting, I think.”

Is that position tenable? Quite a few graffiti paintings have been popping up in the city recently, and often they are linked to you. Do you recognize authorship of it?

GLOWINSKI: Mais non, of course not. I think this author is anonymous. And it is important that he stays anonymous. But I can talk about it.

Alright, what did you think about the penis in Sint-Gillis/Saint-Gilles?

GLOWINSKI: Touche pas à mon zizi! Clever, wasn’t it? I was very impressed by that graffiti and the space it occupied. A lot of people called it a penis at rest. That was not my first thought when I saw it, for the first time. [Smiles] In my eyes it was the image that a child has of his father’s penis – something very natural and sometimes even funny. But all anybody could talk about was that it was flaccid. That tells you a lot because it means that people imagined it erect. And then there was the fact that it was located opposite a Catholic school, that was really something. What does that penis really tell us? Nothing. It is merely shown and allowed to exist. Whatever it says is imposed from the outside.

floats about. To me all of those forms are the same thing. The soul is the core. That little soul of the Jewish father who floats in the air may incarnate in various ways.

A lot of those recent works are very intimate, like the naked woman on the Varkensmarkt/rue du Marché aux Porcs. You were just talking about the impossibility of intimacy in the city.

GLOWINSKI: Intimacy in the public space is a revolutionary act. It is to import the individual into the collective, and that is a paradox. I see the violence that everyone experiences as an individual in society. While making graffiti, I have a profound wound, a frustration that gives the impression of gaining the upper hand, but actually restores balance. Not through compromise, but through a shock. To me, compromise is not a livable solution.

Graffitikunstenaar, performer, tekenaar, sculpteur... Vincent Glowinski, de kunstenaar die in 2010 het licht zag toen hij de huid van stadslegende Bonom noodgedwongen afwierp, is vele dingen tegelijk. kunstenaar op mens en wereld. Zelfportretten als die van Luc Tuymans of Jan Fabre tonen hoe de kunstenaar ook zichzelf inzet in die debatten. Wanneer Stefan Vanfleteren een fotoportret maakt van kunstenaar Rinus Van de Velde, dan zou je daar zelfs een dialoog tussen beide kunstenaars in kunnen ontwaren. Dat sluit dan weer aan bij wat het (zelf)portret in de selfiecultuur is geworden: een manier om met elkaar te communiceren.

et gros van de beelden die vandaag − digitaal − worden geproduceerd, toont gezichten van bekende maar evengoed onbekende medemensen. Ooit was dat anders. Voor de uitvinding van de fotografie en de democratisering van de beeldcultuur waren beelden schaarser en toonden ze alleen belangrijk geachte onderwerpen: mythische, Bijbelse, historische taferelen of figuren, daarna ook landschappen en stillevens.

Pas toen renaissance en humanisme de individuele mens ontvoogdden, kon in de vijftiende eeuw het portretgenre geboren worden. Eerst toonde het portret de mens nog altijd in relatie tot God, maar al snel speelden ook sociale argumenten een rol, in portretten die als statussymbool golden voor politieke en geestelijke figuren. Toen Hans Memling circa 1482 de Brugse burgemeester Willem Moreel schilderde, mat die laatste zich nog een devote houding aan die het hogere gezag hierboven erkende. Het portret van de wat grimmig kijkende Johannes Scheyring door Lucas Cranach neigt vanwege de dure mantel die de Duitse theoloog erop draagt al wat meer naar de portretten van Rembrandt en Rubens. Zij verdienden hun geld met het afbeelden van de rijkere burgerij, die met modieuze kleding en juwelen omhangen was.

In de twintigste eeuw gingen staatsie en stijfheid steeds vaker op de schop, en werden portretten ook emblemen van introspectie, sociale strijd, artistieke expressie, psychologische of fysionomische studie, of visies van de

Op de KMSKB-expo Belofte van een gelaat spelen die elementaire cultuurhistorische bedenkingen bij het portret slechts een achtergrondrol. Ze worden niet geëxpliciteerd in begeleidende teksten, en dat is een goede keuze. De tentoonstellingstitel, geleend bij Charles Baudelaire, klinkt dan wat duf, eigenlijk is deze herschikte selectie van de omstreden vaste collectie van de KMSKB (en een aantal bruiklenen) juist verfrissend, omdat ze (de verbeelding van) de toeschouwer aan de praat wil krijgen.

De chronologie van de werken wordt doorbroken doordat de portretten ingedeeld zijn in ensembles met hoogwaardigheidsbekleders, heren, dames, kinderen, groepsportretten enzovoort. Oude meesters als Bruegel, Rembrandt en Rubens komen daardoor naast Tuymans, Fabre en Borremans te hangen, en ook disciplines worden vermengd. Het gros zijn schilderijen, maar er zijn ook bustes, en je hoeft niet vreemd op te kijken wanneer naast Memling een daklozenportret van de Amerikaanse fotograaf Andres Serrano hangt, of naast Rubens’ portret van Helena Fourment een anoniem straatportret van Beat Streuli.

POST-IT Al die gezichten kijken niet alleen de bezoeker aan, maar bespieden ook elkaar. Alsof ze na al die tijd eindelijk een keer door het museum zijn samengebracht om nader met elkaar kennis te maken. Dan zie je hoe verveelde, in gouden kooien gevangen burgervrouwen nieuwsgierig kijken naar de vrijgevochten Nel Wouters, hoe de twintigste-eeuwse Madame Nougé behalve haar strenge kaaklijn niets gemeen heeft met de zestiende-eeuwse Maria van Oostenrijk. Hoe De scholier van Théo Van Rysselberghe een totaal ander leven heeft geleid dan de Karel II van David Teniers, en hoe het gezin dat Jan van Noordt schilderde in 1676 al dan niet verschilt van dat van François-Joseph Navez uit 1816.

Ook de bezoeker mag meespreken. Naast de werken hangen nu al kattebelletjes en korte teksten die door het personeel van het museum bij de specifieke portretten zijn aangebracht met een stukje kleefband. In de afsluitende ruimte, waar een hele reeks reproducties van de getoonde werken hangt, kunnen de toeschouwers hun eigen Post-its vullen met associaties en gedachten. De beste teksten worden later naast de originele werken gehangen.

Heureusement que des réalisateurs audacieux et inspirés comme le Français Bertrand Mandico sont là pour nous rappeler qu’au cinéma tout est possible. Dans l’épopée fantastico-érotique Les Garçons sauvages, « les garçons sont joués par des filles, se métamorphosent en filles mais sont, dans le fond, toujours des garçons ». Il faut (vraiment) le voir pour le croire.

U

n vent nouveau souffle sur le cinéma et il s’appelle Bertrand Mandico. Après avoir longtemps agité les eaux du court et du moyen-métrage, le cinéaste français s’engouffre dans le format long avec Les Garçons sauvages, un conte fantastico-érotique qui respire l’audace et la liberté. Dans un passé fantasmé en noir et blanc entrecoupé de flashs colorés, cinq garnements ayant de la testostérone à revendre se rendent coupables d’un crime atroce. En désespoir de cause, leurs parents s’en remettent à un vieux loup de mer hollandais surnommé Le Capitaine (un Sam Louwyck surprenant), se vantant de pouvoir « transformer n’importe quel garçon violent en être docile et civilisé ». Commence pour la bande sauvage une traversée en haute mer aux allures de rite de passage, sous les ordres d’un capitaine bourru, sadique et irrésistiblement viril. Jusqu’à ce que la mer déchaînée finisse par recracher les rejetons sur la plage d’une île enchantée qui sera le lieu de leur délivrance… sexuelle.

Dans le poème surréaliste et sensuel que Mandico adresse au cinéma, les références et l’imagination débridée du réalisateur se confondent pour nous transporter dans un univers esthétique faussement nostalgique (le film est tourné en partie en studio), tant le film est au service de son temps. Peut-être bien à l’avant-garde. Et si le cinéma Nova n’avait pas cueilli cet irrésistible fruit défendu, le spectateur belge en serait tristement privé. « Le Nova

propose un des programmes les plus incroyables d’Europe. Je suis hyper flatté que le film sorte chez eux », dit Mandico qui nous a accordé une interview téléphonique depuis son appartement à Paris.

Les garçons sauvages sont interprétés par des filles. L'idée était-elle présente dès le départ ?

BERTRAND MANDICO: Dès que j’ai su que le film

allait tourner autour de la métamorphose de garçons violents, c’était évident que c’était des actrices qui devaient jouer ces garçons. Je voulais avoir des personnages androgynes sans

les différencier par des spécificités physiques marquantes, je voulais qu’elles aient toutes la même silhouette. J’adore travailler avec des actrices. J’aime les entraîner dans des rôles qu’on n’a pas l’habitude de leur donner pour développer leur talent en sortant des clichés.

Comment avez-vous travaillé avec vos actrices pour faire surgir le masculin en elles ?

MANDICO: Je leur ai montré mes films car il

fallait vraiment qu’elles puissent adhérer à l’univers dans lequel je voulais les transporter.

par rapport à ça. Mais je pense que la féminisation ne peut pas faire de mal. Ce qui m’intéresse, c’est cette idée de transgenre. Je voulais montrer des filles qui jouent des garçons et qui après redeviennent des filles mais qui, dans le fond, sont toujours des garçons. Je voulais travailler sur l’utopie d’un monde où le changement de sexe est quelque chose de possible et de plus facile que les chirurgies actuelles. L’idée qu’on puisse changer de sexe à volonté me plaît beaucoup. Le monde a évolué, on est en 2018 et je trouve important de reprendre des trames du récit d’aventure qui rappellent des classiques du cinéma mais en y injectant des problématiques actuelles, notamment sur le transgenre.

Avant leur mue, les garçons sont des êtres sauvages capables de violences sexuelles.

Difficile de ne pas penser à la vague #BalanceTonPorc. que j’ai écrit il y a plus de deux ans. Après, moi je montre la pulsion masculine dans ce qu’elle a de plus bas. Et le groupe, la bande, fait que cette pulsion est désinhibée. Il y a forcément un écho avec la vague #MeToo mais je ne suis pas un commentateur de l’actualité, je ne veux pas délivrer de message sur la société. Je veux juste faire du cinéma libre avec des préoccupations de mon époque et ouvrir vers une rêverie. J’ai fait le film que j’avais envie de voir et si ça peut ouvrir l’esprit des gens, c’est l’essentiel.

MANDICO: L’actualité m’a rattrapé, c’est un film

Votre film est déjà sorti en France et connaît un succès critique et en salles peu habituel pour un film de genre. Peut-on y voir une réaction à un certain cinéma figé et puritain?

MANDICO: C’était super comme constat parce

masculine et féminine et on a travaillé pour chacune avec des personnages de référence.

Par exemple, pour Vimala Ponce, c’était Patrick Dewaer dans Série Noire et Alain Delon dans Plein Soleil. Pour Anaël Snoek, Peter O’Toole dans Lord Jim et David Bowie dans Furio, etc.

Elles ont travaillé sur ces tandems en s’inspirant aussi de garçons qu’elles ont connus. On a beaucoup répété. La coupe de cheveux a été très importante. Pour les silhouettes, on a plaqué les poitrines, on a renforcé les hanches et on leur a donné des chaussures trop grandes. On a travaillé comme ça jusqu’à obtenir les personnages.

On sent chez vous une grande attention pour la photographie, le cadrage et la composition. À quel point intervenez-vous dans ce processus ?

MANDICO: Ma chef opératrice Pascale Granel et

moi nous connaissons depuis très longtemps.

Je lui fournis des exemples issus de la photographie ou du cinéma et elle se charge de sculpter la lumière en fonction des atmos-

phères. Mais le cadre, c’est moi qui m’en occupe. Quand je cadre, je n’ai personne entre moi et les acteurs, je suis en osmose totale avec eux. Quand je vois des cadres impersonnels chez un cinéaste, je trouve ça un peu triste. Je me demande ce qui fait qu’il existe vraiment.

Dans Les garçons sauvages, le fait de se transformer en femme est présenté comme un accomplissement. « L’avenir est femme », dit le personnage Séverin. Une proposition cinématographique ou un point de vue assumé ?

MANDICO: Je ne suis pas dans une utopie naïve

que les exploitants de salle sont si résignés.

Alors quand vous faites des premières dans certaines villes et que, d’un coup, vous avez la salle qui est pleine et que le public est jeune, ça donne de l’espoir. J’ai l’impression que le succès du film répond à une soif de cinéma, le plaisir de voir un cinéma libre et non pas politiquement correct. Les gens me disent qu’ils ont un ras-le-bol du cinéma social réaliste. De mon côté, en tant que spectateur, j’en ai un peu assez d’un certain cinéma d’auteur nordique extrêmement cynique et froid. Même si c’est bien que ce cinéma existe, c’est important aussi d’élargir l’éventail, ouvrir une porte au romantisme surréel qui était condamnée dans le cinéma.

k voelde me als een cellofaantje rond een pakje sigaretten,” zei Joni Mitchell ooit in een befaamde conversatie over haar iconische break-upplaat Blue, een album waarop de Canadese singer-songwriter na haar mislukte relaties met Graham Nash en James Taylor haar ziel te grabbel gooide. “Ik voelde me alsof ik absoluut geen geheimen had voor de wereld,” ging ze verder. “Ik kon niet pretenderen sterk te zijn. Of gelukkig. Maar het voordeel was dat er ook in mijn muziek geen verdedigingsmechanismen werkten.”

Marlon Williams veert op wanneer

ik hem met haar uitspraken, die je ook kan toepassen op zijn nieuwe plaat Make way for love, confronteer. “Wat een heerlijke metafoor!”

Hij haast zich meteen ook om te zeggen dat hij zich absoluut niet wil meten met Joni Mitchell. Je zou goed gek zijn! Maar hij herkent zich wel in het opengooien van haar geblutste hart.

ORBISON ET AL. De Nieuw-Zeelandse singer-songwriter met Maori-bloed en een gouden stem – de omschrijving ‘Kiwi crooner’ valt al eens – zag het voorbije jaar zijn liefdesverbond met zijn collega Aldous Harding,

een van de folkpoprevelaties van 2017, ontbinden. Maar de zanger die wij onder ogen krijgen tijdens een barre Brusselse winterochtend, terwijl het in zijn thuisbasis Lyttelton nota bene prettig zomert, is allesbehalve een hoopje ellende.

Ook al zingt hij dat hij zich “zo gelukkig voelt als een sneeuwman in de zon.”

“Dat is zo’n tekstregel die recht uit een jazz standard zou kunnen komen,” prevelt de 27-jarige zanger tussen zijn tanden, terwijl zijn ogen beginnen te glinsteren.

“Ik zeg het maar zelf, want dadelijk ga je me toch weer met Chet Baker vergelijken.” We zouden niet

durven. Of toch, we zouden wel durven. Want Marlon Williams landt daar ergens met zijn stem, in het landschap genaamd weemoed waar ook Roy Orbison, Lee Hazlewood en Antony/Anohni tranen laten condenseren tegen het koude canvas rond de ziel.

Terug naar zijn clash met de liefde.

“Ik ben er wel overheen hoor, maar ik ben nu een jaar single en dat is heel nieuw voor mij. (Lacht) Sinds ik een tiener was, tuimelde ik van de ene relatie in de andere. Op een manier is dat onderduiken in een veilige haven en wegvluchten van jezelf. Dus vind ik het goed om nu een keer alleen te zijn. Ik heb

geleerd om dat te aanvaarden en ervan te genieten. Maar het is geen makkelijk proces.”

Op zijn debuut waren de helft van de songs covers, waaronder het van Nina Simone en Feist bekende maar hem door Barbara Dane aangereikte ‘When I was a young girl’. Zijn aanvaring met de liefde heeft zijn eigen stem doen rijpen.

"Ik vind nog altijd dat eens een song geschreven is, hij niet meer van mij is. Maar ik kan nu wel meer van mezelf weggeven. Dat was een bevrijdend gevoel, maar ook een beetje beangstigend. Ik hoop dat pijn en lijden geen vereiste zijn om songs te schrijven.

(Lacht) Aan de andere kant: die liedjes eruit persen was een deel van de therapie. Nu kan ik weer ademen. Muziek was voor mij nooit een noodzaak, wel als luisteraar en bewonderaar, maar niet als schrijver. Tot nu.”

Hoe neem je zo’n song op, als exen? “Via de telefoon. (Lacht) Erg symbolisch voor onze relatie,” zegt hij met een glimlach.

Het goede aan Williams’ overpeinzingen over de liefde, is dat het nergens zwartgallig wordt. “Make way for love is inderdaad bedacht met een zucht ironie. Maar het gaat vooral over de onvermijdelijkheid van de liefde, of je er klaar voor bent of niet.” Vandaar dat hij zingt dat “love is a terrible thing” en “break your heart was the sweetest thing.” “Tja, ik heb mijn

De vergelijkingen met Roy Orbison vliegen hem dan overal om de oren, Williams heeft vooral veel geleerd van de mensen om hem heen. “Lessen in leven en liefde krijg je niet mee van je helden. Zij leefden of leven in een wereld die niet de jouwe was of is. Je kent hen niet. Aldous, zíj heeft me veel bijgebracht. Zoals de manier waarop ze haar eigen emoties in haar kunst kan vertalen.”

Valt het hem zwaar om nog naar de liedjes van haar doorbraakalbum Party te luisteren? “Nee, helemaal niet. Party is een van mijn favoriete platen van het voorbije jaar. Ik hou van de songs.

Ik hou van de herinneringen die in de muziek zitten. Het is het bewijs dat ik me nu goed voel. Ik kan ervan genieten. Ze weet dat.”

Een van de hoogtepunten op zijn eigen album is het hartverscheurende ‘Nobody gets what they want anymore’, waarin Williams’ en Hardings stemmen verstrenge-

eigen sexual power ontdekt, in goede en kwade zin. Het is een kracht, maar ook een verantwoordelijkheid. De gedachte dat je iemand pijn kan doen, is verschrikkelijk. Ik heb beseft dat iedereen een asshole kan zijn.”

Op dat duale haakt ook ‘Vampire again’ in, een single die de plaat niet haalde. “Dat nummer gaat over naar buiten wandelen en kunnen zijn wie je bent. Bij mij vertaalt zich dat in het aanvaarden van mijn neuroses. Hét bewijs dat ik mijn zelfbeeld heb opgekrikt.”

In de video bij de song lijkt hij een reïncarnatie van het Amerikaanse horroricoon Vincent Price. “Haha.

Die clip is een ode aan Nicolas Cage in Vampire’s kiss, een cultfilm uit de jaren 1980. Cage is een zakenman die ervan overtuigd is dat hij een vampier wordt. Dat thema ligt me na aan het hart: het monster dat in elk van ons zit.”

Sur son deuxième album, Make Way for Love, Marlon Williams ouvre sans crainte son cœur brisé. Dans la foulée, le chanteur-compositeur néo-zélandais trouve sa propre voix.

don’t keep my distance,” Sarah Lowie tells us, kneeling on the large footrest in the living room of the flat in Schaarbeek/Schaerbeek that she shares with some artist friends. “I don’t see the point in taking photos if it isn’t personal. I know I wouldn’t enjoy it.”

The 23-year-old Belgian belongs to a fascinating family of photographers (such as Nan Goldin, Larry Clark, and Antoine D’Agata) for whom artistic expression and life are one and the same.

In SixMille (named after the Charleroi post code), which was the subject of a publication and an exhibition at Contretype in 2016, this young woman documented a period of her life with the Madil City Gang, a group of black Carolo rappers.

After being approached by one of them to take some photos in their recording studio, the photographer, then still a student at Le Septantecinq in Brussels, started to frequent the group regularly and came to share their life and their precarious living quarters. “We were all squatting the same place. Some people didn’t want to go home to their wife or their parents, others were on the street and had nowhere to go.”

Sarah Lowie was accepted by the group and, better still, became a member of it, sharing in the joys and miseries of her new comrades. “I loved this way of living outside of the system because it led me to discover the camaraderie that is part of African culture. Their way of life was very different to what I knew. It was extremely enriching. There were days when there was nothing to eat but it didn’t matter because we were together. When it was too cold, we all slept in the same room. When they see my photos, people are shocked to see such awful living conditions. We keep our distance from that kind of place out of fear, but I believe that this difference should be celebrated.”

Gripped by this human adventure, Sarah Lowie doesn’t pause or back away when employing her Nikon film camera. Quite the opposite. Her artistic activity cannot be separated from her life experiences. On paper, these candid images appear like black-and-white flashes showing a sliver of an intense existence full of “parties, lies, laughs,

EPIC LOVE STORY There were many girls who passed through, visiting the musicians. “There was nothing innocent about their presence and I had no desire to become one of them. Straight away, I set a boundary. I was very clear.”

Keeping a safe distance didn’t stop the young photographer from falling for rapper Django. A key period in Sarah Lowie’s life began, resulting in a new series of images, which are currently being shown at the Centrale and have been published in a book.

In Chaque jour, je suis avec toi (“Every day I am with you”), the photographer continues to explore an autobiographical approach. This time, she no longer fades into the background of dark nights in Charleroi. She is fully present, head on, and in colour (digital), alongside the man she loves.

A tightly-bonded unit, the couple flirt, play, pose, and display themselves on Facebook and Instagram as if to proclaim their unconditional love to the world from which they had cut themselves off. “There is definitely a narcissistic aspect to it, but what interested me above all was the personal interplay. I wanted to show people the world we had created for ourselves, how the people we knew saw us and the way Charleroi saw us.”

In the privacy of their little bedroom, in the old TEC bus park, in nearby fields full of flowers, on the beach at the Mont-surMarchienne quarry, naked, in their underwear, clothed or half-clothed, the lovers put on display, in a natural, almost raw, style, a romance in which viewers can see a reflection of themselves. “What I went through with Django, we have all been through in our own different ways.”

As if to signify the end, as unpredictable as it was inevitable, of this epic love story, Sarah Lowie inserted drawings by her artist friend Suzanne Detrez into some of the images. They are suggestive of mould.

“It ended. That’s life.”

Life goes on for Sarah Lowie, and we look forward to the next intense chapter of her photographic autobiography. “We’ll see what life has in store for me,” she says with a big smile.

Talking heads Jasmijn Post, Kurt Snoekx, Michel Verlinden et Tom Zonderman se cassent la tête sur l’art de la vie

Il y a tout juste un an, Yves Goldstein, chargé de mission du gouvernement de la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale, confiait ses objectifs quant aux grandes étapes de l’aménagement du nouveau pôle muséal en passe de prendre place dans les anciens bâtiments Citroën Yser. Force est de constater que l’homme ne s’est pas fourvoyé d’un iota: le projet avance avec la précision que l’on prête au chemin de fer suisse. Alléluia ! Tout semble indiquer que les travaux pourront commencer à l’automne 2019 comme initialement prévu.

Cette reconversion attendue, dont l’intitulé « Kanal » révèle l’ambition de faire corps avec la ville, a d’ailleurs franchi une étape majeure dans son avènement vers la concrétisation. En effet, le conseil d’administration de la Fondation qui pilote ce mégaprojet a levé le voile sur FR

« On ne peut s’empêcher de penser au triste sort du Conservatoire de Bruxelles qui, parallèlement au projet Kanal, est en train de pourrir sur place » le nom de l’association d’architectes – Sergison Bates (Londres)-EM2N (Zurich)-noA (Bruxelles) – ayant été retenue par le jury international spécialement mis sur pied pour l’occasion. Avec pour slogan « Une Scène pour Bruxelles », le trio gagnant a mis l’accent sur l’intégration au contexte urbain et le dialogue avec la scène socioculturelle locale. Une volonté d’inscription locale dont on ne peut que se féliciter… surtout si elle ne consiste pas à faire passer la pilule d’un cuisant camouflet adressé au monde culturel belge : le choix du Centre Pompidou comme opérateur du musée

d’art qui sera abrité au cœur des 39 000 m2. Et quid de l’argent, le nerf de la guerre ? Hors honoraires des architectes et hors taxes, il devrait s’élever à 125 millions d’euros. La cheville ouvrière du projet de conclure que désormais plus rien ne s’oppose puisque « trouver cette somme à travers quatre ou cinq exercices budgétaires, soit 35 millions d’euros par an, s’inscrit tout à fait dans les capacités financières de la Région qui dispose de 4 milliards annuels. C’est moins d’1% du montant annuel. » Dans la foulée, Yves Goldstein rappelait que ce montant équivalait « plus ou moins au tiers de la rénovation du tunnel Léopold II ». Tout est-il donc pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes ? S’il convient certes de se réjouir de ce que la capitale possède enfin un musée d’art moderne et contemporain digne de ce nom – du moins on l’espère dans la mesure où la ligne artistique n’a pas encore été déterminée, on ne peut s’empêcher de penser au triste sort du Conservatoire de Bruxelles qui, parallèlement, est en train de pourrir sur place, faute de 60 millions d’euros nécessaires… C’est la société civile – l’asbl Conservamus active depuis 2007 – qui a dû prendre le relais du pouvoir afin de ne pas assister au naufrage de ce bâtiment. Notre conseil ? Inviter les décideurs politiques à passer et repasser devant le 30 de la rue de la Régence. L’édifice permet de réaliser le sort que le temps réserve aux ambitions culturelles démesurées. Dans la Rome antique, lorsqu’un général triomphait dans les rues de la Ville éternelle, un serviteur était chargé de rappeler que, malgré son succès d’aujourd'hui, demain était un autre jour. « Memento mori » lui murmurait-il à l’oreille, « rappelle-toi que tu vas mourir »…

L

ady Bird didn’t just appear out of nowhere. As a student, director and screenwriter Greta Gerwig was involved in low-fi films known as mumblecore. Along with director Noah Baumbach (Margot at the Wedding), who is now her partner, she came up with Frances Ha, an Annie Hall for millennials, and she was brilliant in the leading role of the 27-year-old who for too long has been hoping in vain to get a job as a dancer. With her ravishing appearance, sense of humour, and natural performances, she will always find work as an actress.

She sparkled in Damsels in Distress, To Rome with Love, Jackie, and 20th Century Women. But Gerwig is too much of a storyteller with her own voice and perspective on things just to act. Her first solo as a screenwriter and director is a total bull’s-eye. According to the website Rotten Tomatoes, Lady Bird is the best-reviewed film of all time, and it was nominated for five Academy Awards. It didn’t win any of them, but let’s not let that spoil the fun.

Lady Bird is a sensitive but far from fragile, funny but far from inane semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film. Saoirse Ronan (The Grand Budapest Hotel) confirms her tremendous talent in the title role. Lady Bird is the name that the seventeen-year-old Christine decided to give herself.

This odd-ball desperately wants to leave the nest and go as far away

as possible from her home, boring Sacramento, and her Catholic girls’ school. With her unnuanced opinions, an uncontrollable urge for a grander life in a city that does have culture, and the overconfidence of every seventeen-year-old, she sometimes makes a mess of things. The film focuses on her turbulent relationship with her hard-working and equally stubborn mother. In less than a second, they go from adoration to war and back again. Gerwig’s combination of disarming honesty, attentive refinement, and hopeful humour is a recipe that leaves you wanting more.

Met haar ravissante voorkomen, naturel en gevoel voor humor zal Greta Gerwig als actrice niet snel werkloos zijn. Haar eerste solo als scenarist en regisseur is meteen een schot in de roos. Kruis de spanning van David Finchers The game (is dit spel nog een spel?) met de brave burgerhumor van Horrible bosses en het ik-zet-mezelf-te-kijk-zonder-te-verpinkenkunstje van Jason Bateman en je komt uit bij Game night. Lang blijft deze actiekomedie niet hangen en als je er toch bewust aan terugdenkt, valt op dat je de vele twisten, omkeringen en verrassingen best niet onder de loep neemt. Maar de duur van de film verveel je je even weinig als tijdens een partijtje Scrabble of Pictionary. Bateman en de opvallend enthousiaste Rachel McAdams (True detective, The notebook) spelen Max en Annie, een perfect op elkaar ingespeeld koppel met een gedeelde voorliefde voor het winnen (niet spelen) van gezelschapsspelletjes. Het spel zit op de wagen wanneer Max’ grotere, rijkere, betere broer echt wordt ontvoerd tijdens een peperduur ontvoeringsspel. Het tempo ligt hoog, de beelden zijn gepolijst, ook de bijrolspelers krijgen kansen om te scoren en een aanvaardbaar aantal grappen treft doel. Game on? (NR)

Qu’est-ce qu’un homme s’il n’a pas de plan? Tomi, Rasto et Mižu veulent atteindre le coffre-fort de la Banque Nationale en creusant un tunnel depuis l’arrière-boutique du fleuriste La Fleurière. Le film est plus proche de En attendant Godot avec des jeunes Roms que de Ocean’s Eleven. La pluie incessante, le dur labeur et l’absence d’un meilleur plan forcent le trio à attendre. Et l’attente engendre des discussions. Sur l’argent qui arrange tous les problèmes, sur l’incendie ravageur dans le magasin à proximité de la place Rogier, sur les skinheads à Prague, sur le bruit soporifique de la pluie, sur le rejet qu’ils vivent où qu’ils aillent. Il y a de la vie/ du cinéma dans ce film qui allie décor minimaliste, presque abstrait (une pièce vide et un puits, une lucarne opaque, un égout), cadrage et montage soignés et réalité d’acteurs au plus près de leur personnage. Le réalisateur Ruben Desiere sait s’y prendre et regorge de bonnes idées. Mais pour ce premier essai, il ne parvient pas à réaliser le grand film qu’il a en tête. (NR)

Game Night n’est pas le film le plus mémorable, et mieux vaut ne pas s’appesantir sur les nombreux rebondissements. Mais cette comédie d’action n’est certainement pas ennuyeuse. Max et Anne forment un couple parfaitement compatible qui adore gagner aux jeux de société. Mais la partie dérape quand le riche grand frère de Max se fait kidnapper au cours d’un jeu très coûteux. Le rythme est soutenu, les images sont léchées, les joueurs secondaires sortent gagnants et les blagues atteignent leur cible. Game on ?

Drie Roma-jongens willen in de kluis van de Nationale Bank raken door een tunnel te graven vanuit bloemenwinkel La Fleurière. De aanhoudende regen, het zware werk en het gebrek aan een beter plan verplichten het trio tot wachten en het wachten tot praten. Er zit leven/cinema in de combinatie van het minimalistische decor, de doordachte cadrage en montage met de werkelijkheid van de acteurs die dicht bij hun personages staan. Regisseur Ruben Desiere kan wat en heeft goeie ideeën, maar zijn beste film moet nog komen.

Game Night is not the most memorable film, and it is probably best not to think about the many plot twists too much, but this action comedy is certainly not boring.

Max and Annie are a perfectly compatible couple who love winning party games. But the shit hits the fan when Max’s bigger, richer brother actually gets kidnapped during an extremely expensive abduction game. The tempo is high, the cinematography is polished, the secondary roles are winners, and many of the jokes genuinely hit the spot. Game on?

Three Roma boys want to break into the vault of the National Bank by digging a tunnel from of a flower shop called La Fleurière. The incessant rain, the difficult work, and the lack of a better plan force the trio to wait, and waiting leads to talking. There is life/cinema in the combination of the minimalist décor, the carefully designed framing and editing, and the reality of the actors who are close to their characters. Director Ruben Desiere is quite capable and has good ideas, but we suspect his best film is yet to come.

es suricates à l’abordage, un quartier de pastèque, une poule neurasthénique, un paquet de dynamite, une maison bien chauffée. Voilà une vie libre telle qu’elle apparaît depuis le studio de Alessandro Pessoli à Los Angeles, Sheik Yerbouti et Hot Rats à plein volume. L’artiste italien confiait, en effet, qu’il a écouté Frank Zappa pendant qu’il travaillait sur cette série de peintures et qu’il a trouvé dans les expériences soniques et les collages du guitariste moustachu, de nombreux parallèles avec sa manière intuitive de travailler. La peinture de Pessoli est comme un grand filtre euphorique et coloré qui absorbe ce qui l’entoure comme si rien du monde ne lui était extérieur. Dans son univers pictural, on oublie ses origines. Tout est passé au tamis de l’acrylique. Deux hommes nus ont perdu la tête, cela ne les empêche pas de nous souhaiter la bienvenue. Là, une maison ou une fusée ? Difficile à dire, il faut attendre la mise à feu. Une nature morte se conçoit avec revolver, poires et flèches. Et le parterre de fleurs, il a poussé dans la boîte de couleurs.

ENTONNOIR PSYCHÉDÉLIQUE La matière peinte s’affirme avec force, par les couleurs et les coups de pinceaux entraînant le réel dans un entonnoir psychédélique. Sur la surface de la toile, les sujets n’en sortent pas indemnes, parasités par des éléments perturbateurs, ici une banane, là un sexe masculin ou des sucettes glacées. Ailleurs, ce sont des fragments anatomiques, yeux et bouches, qui viennent parasiter la logique de la représentation.

Dans un esprit post-pop, Pessoli joue avec des objets iconiques de la modernité, comme les émojis, les smartphones, ou de la culture américaine, comme le revolver à barillet quand ce ne sont pas les dessins de ses enfants, qu’il plante dans ses compositions comme des gousses d’ail dans un gigot. Le peintre est devenu un filtre qui sélectionne des éléments hétérogènes dont il fait des symboles que chacun remplira comme il lui plaira. Adepte du collage dans les formes, il l’est aussi dans les techniques puisqu’il

combine sur la toile le travail au pinceau, à la bombe aérosol, en impression stencil ou en sérigraphie. Il aime aussi passer ses surfaces au décolorant, ce qui donne par endroits un halo comme sur une télévision mal réglée.

L’univers de Pessoli n’en est pas pour autant

pur sucre. Derrière la superposition chaotique de couleurs fluo et délavées, de poings levés et de glaces acidulées, diffuse une angoisse sourde, celle de l’hétérogénéité mal digérée et celle du rejet qui guette toutes les greffes.

riture René heeft alles om te behagen.

Allereerst een geschiedenis, want dit familieadres wordt al sinds 1932 van de ene op de andere generatie doorgegeven. In de keuken staat vader Dirk Piolon, die in zijn nogal beperkte werkruimte wonderen verricht. In de zaal zijn er heel wat mensen druk in de weer, maar het is vooral Nicolas, de zoon van Dirk, die de aandacht opeist.

Nicolas heeft heel wat betekend in de modernisering van de zaak: hij heeft een neus voor ongelofelijke producten, serveert uitzonderlijke thees en had een stevige hand in de buitengewone wijnkaart.

Maar het oog wil en krijgt hier ook heel wat.

De ruimte valt uiteen in twee zalen. De eerste oogt wat ruwer en ademt de sfeer van een frituur uit. In de tweede zaal kom je terecht in het mooie kader van een bistro van weleer.

Hier is, terecht, geen jota aan veranderd: tussen het gele tegelwerk en het houten meubilair zit je nog steeds even gezellig.

Hetzelfde geldt voor de zo geruststellende, roodgeblokte, plastic tafellakens. Wanneer je ze ziet, weet je dat er je een mooi moment te wachten staat.

Maar natuurlijk komt het hoogtepunt uit de keuken. Een hartverwarmende volkskeuken.

Als voorgerecht denken we dan in het bijzonder aan de moules à l’escargot (€10).

Een typisch Brusselse lekkernij, die gegratineerd en met boter, peterselie, look, sjalotten en witte wijn aan tafel verschijnt. Het is een van de populairste specialiteiten van het huis.

Als hoofdgerecht zijn het gewoonlijk de mosselen van de chef – met pastis – die onze

voorkeur genieten. Buiten het mosselseizoen moet je voor vlees gaan. Friture René is een van de zeldzame adresjes die de traditie van paardenvlees nog intact houden. Twee opties dienen zich aan. Ofwel de ribeyesteak (€31), 400 gram lustig met peterselie bestrooid rundvlees. Of – en dat is onze aanrader – Galicisch Txogitxu-rundvlees: een klein wonder dat bleu en in sneetjes wordt geserveerd en wegsmelt op de tong. Opgelet: deze keuze kost je veruit het meest (€30-40 per portie), maar eens je ervan hebt geproefd, is er geen weg terug.

Si l’on devait élire le restaurant le plus emblématique de Bruxelles, on choisirait Friture René. Une adresse indémodable qui concilie tradition et air du temps. En entrée, on opte pour les très prisées moules à l’escargot (10 €). Cette préparation gratinée panache beurre, persil, ail, échalotes et vin blanc pour un véritable délice bruxellois. En guise de plat, c’est habituellement les moules du chef, au pastis, qui ont notre préférence. Hors saison, c’est la viande. Pas tenté par le cheval ? Nous recommandons le bœuf Txogitxu de Galice, une merveille, servie bleue et présentée façon tagliata, qui fond sur la langue. Une option chère (entre 30 et 40 €) mais succulente.

Het sublieme gebruik van licht, schaduw en compositie van oude meesters als Vermeer en Rembrandt inspireren Carla van de Puttelaar. De Nederlandse fotografe laat haar sensuele naakten van jonge vrouwen in eenzelfde zacht licht baden als Vermeer zijn meisje met de parel. Box Galerie toont het werk dat Van de Puttelaar op vraag van het Rembrandthuis in Amsterdam maakte.

Adornments is een hommage aan zijn naakten. Ze kopieert de typische houdingen en drapages van rijke stoffen en waagt zich ook aan het stilleven. Bloemen fotografeert ze met eenzelfde sensualiteit als haar naakten. (HR) NL

Les douces patines de ces surfaces sont celles de la mémoire, un voyage en Nouvelle Zélande, une visite à la maison des grands-parents ou le passage d’un livre.
