EN | On the 2011 record/punk rock opera “Hyphenated-man”, American bassist, singer, and rock legend Mike Watt told the story of a middle-aged punk rocker who has remained faithful to the ideals of his youth, but nevertheless finds himself asking questions. Now it’s 2015, and the lead actor is heading back onto the road with this 45-minute song that has been cut into thirty different chunks. The tour’s title – 3rd + 30 opera – is a self-relativising nod from Watt to his good friend Lee Ranaldo, who always calls middle age “the third act”, but it is also a statement from a tireless survivor. His eternal youth (despite being 57) was the driving force behind bands like Minutemen and fIREHOSE, and he thus inspired bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, and Foo Fighters. A few years ago, he made his debut with the Stooges: you can’t get much closer to the punk rock walhalla than that. He recently told The Quietus that “Hyphenated-man” was inspired by the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch and the film The Wizard of Oz. The result is “no tired-ass bunk drama, but rather like a wheel spinning.” In a certain sense, this record is the bassist’s return to the unbridled energy, amazement, and urge for expansion of the early years of Minutemen, the band he founded in 1980 with his late childhood friend, guitarist D.
