ovember is a season of transition in Brunswick County, starting out as fall and often ending with some pretty wintry weather. But it’s also the beginning of the holiday season, with Thanksgiving leading the way.

I love Thanksgiving for its emphasis on food and family. I like to think of my family as bigger than just those with whom I share DNA. As Edwin Markham said in his poem “Outwitted:”

We often include people at our Thanksgiving table who are not, strictly speaking, family— but they are family in a larger sense: neighbors, people whose relatives are gone or far away, or those whose own traditions reach out toward us. It adds a lot of flavor to our Thanksgiving table!

If you know of someone who might fit this bill—an older person whose family is far away, or who might otherwise be alone; or someone who hasn’t had a traditional Thanksgiving history— try inviting them to your own Thanksgiving table. You could find yourself, as I have, thankful for the experience.

appy Thanksgiving, Everyone! I find it fitting that we are writing our newsletter for the Season of Thanksgiving as we coordinate recovery efforts following Hurricane Florence.

As a coastal community, we’re no strangers to Hurricane Season.

However, even our long-time residents have described their dismay at how destructive this storm has been. But despite the power of the storm, it has been nothing compared to the force of community that we have seen in its aftermath.

We are grateful for the collaboration between federal, state, county, municipal and community efforts to meet the needs of our most vulnerable neighbors. We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from so many of you who

have donated food, clothes, and most importantly, your time to help us in this effort. I have countless stories of folks coming in our centers asking how they can help others, even before all of their own needs have been met.

The Brunswick Center at Leland recently welcomed Jade Robinson as Assistant Director. Robinson is a UNCW student finishing up coursework for her bachelor’s degree in recreational therapy with a minor in gerontology.

“I grew up in South Florida but have always thought of North Carolina as home,” Robinson said. “Through my close relationship I had with both of my grandmothers, I developed my passion for working with older adults.”

In her free time, Robinson enjoys volunteering and being outside or going for a run.

“I am so fortunate and happy to be a part of the Brunswick Center at Leland team,” she said.

urricane Florence made a huge and long-lasting impact on our region. Many homes and offices were damaged by flooding and storm damage.

The Brunswick Center at Supply was fortunate to come through the hurricane unscathed.

Unfortunately, the Brunswick County Tax Offices at the county complex could not say the same thing. Their offices were flooded, requiring extensive repair.

The county looked for a temporary site for the tax offices and determined that the Supply Senior Center met their critical space and location needs. The transition happened quickly temporarily closing the Supply Center until repairs can be made on the tax offices.

The Lockwood Folly Community Center was secured as a temporary nutrition site for Supply seniors as an interim measure until the Stone Chimney Road building is

free again. Lockwood Folly Nutrition Site opened Oct. 8. This site is now open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., offering activities before and after the noon meal.

Our intended goal is to offer Supply seniors an opportunity to reconnect with one another through the fellowship of a meal and time together. Having this temporary meeting space has helped many of our seniors weather the impact of this storm while preserving close bonds and special connections with one another.

We look forward to getting back to our beloved Supply Center as quickly as possible, but in the meantime, come to Lockwood Folly Community Center and spend time with good friends.

By Mike McGurn BSRI Thrift Store Operations Manager The Thrift Store recently received this very large (over 4 feet long) photo of the 14 Company of the Fourth Temporary Recruit Battalion, William B. Halbritter commanding. There are 230 soldiers in the photo. The picture was taken at Camp Grant near Rockford, Ill. This photo may be over 100 years old!

We did some research and found some interesting facts about Camp Grant which opened in 1917.

Camp Grant was one of the U.S. Army’s largest training facilities during World War I, covering 5,600 acres. The 86th Infantry Division, also called the “Black Hawk Division,” was formed there along with the 172nd Infantry Brigade.

The camp received its first draftees in September

1917. Sadly, a year later the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 swept through the camp, infecting over 4,000 troops, 1,000 of whom died in one week.

After WWI, the State of Illinois used Camp Grant for National Guard training. In 1941, it reopened as an Army induction center for World War II. About 100,000 medical personnel were trained there during WWII and the camp employed about 6,000 civilians.

Camp Grant also served as a Prisoner of War camp and housed as many as 2,500 P.O.W.s. It is now the site of the Chicago/Rockford International Airport.

The North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature (STHL) was created by the North Carolina General Assembly (NCGA) to provide information to senior citizens on the legislative process and matters being considered by the NCGA; to promote citizen involvement and advocacy; and to assess the legislative needs of older citizens.

Each of the 100 North Carolina counties has one delegate to the STHL. Most counties also have an alternate delegate. Delegates and alternates must be age 60 or older.

On Saturday, Nov. 10, Brunswick County Homeless Coalition (BCHC) is hosting the 7th Annual Hunger and Homeless Banquet & Soup Luncheon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Brunswick Center at Shallotte (3620 U.S. 17, Shallotte).

Doors open at 9:30. The event is free, donations greatly appreciated.

YOU are invited. Come Learn how BCHC is educating, advocating, and providing services for people who are homeless or in need in Brunswick County. For more details, and online pre-registration, go to www.brunswickhomeless.com.

BCHC is a group of volunteers coming together for the greater good of Brunswick County’s homeless and in-need population. Our mission is to advocate for people who are homeless and in need by increasing awareness of issues and providing resources to meet these needs. BCHC’s vision is making homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring.

About 31 percent of Brunswick County residents live on less than $20,000 a year. Rent as low as $500 per month would use more that 50% of the gross income of such a resident.

The North Carolina Home and Community Care Block Grant (HCCBG) assures cost-effective home and community-based services to the elderly, malnourished, homebound, dependent, and those STHL, continued on page 18

Every month, BCHC helps an average of 27 households who are at-risk or already homeless.

And the impact of the recent hurricane will likely increase the number of people seeking affordable housing, while decreasing the number of affordable units available.

Our toll-free information and assistance number, 1-888-519-5362, is staffed by our volunteers. This allows us to intervene with at-risk families and to connect those already homeless with emergency shelters and help to find housing. We also refer clients to other nonprofits such as Brunswick County Streetreach, Brunswick Family Assistance Agency, area food banks, and shelters in neighboring counties (Brunswick County does not have a shelter.)

We need volunteers. We have no paid staff.

ovember is National Adopt a Pet Month. There are great health-boosting benefits in owning a pet. Pets can offer companionship and true love especially to seniors.

Pets can boost your mood and be your best friend.

As we age, loneliness unfortunately can occur. This may result from loved ones moving away or death of family and friends. Owning a pet can help seniors combat loneliness in many ways and also keep them healthier longer. Here are some ways pets can help seniors live a strong and happy life.

It has been known that pets can give off a calm and relaxing aura to people around them.

Studies show that petting your animal every day may help lower your blood pressure.

Owning a dog encourages a ton of walking. As we all know, walking is the best form of exercise for seniors. This is beneficial in living a more active lifestyle.

Rocky is a 3-year-old Maltese who is spunky, smart, spirited, loves attention, and has a playful personality.

Having a pet helps seniors stay positive instead of having negative thoughts about aging. Pets are always there to listen, have great personalities, are cuddle buddies, and most importantly will love you unconditionally.

When seniors take their dogs on a walk, other people will most likely want to stop and talk to them. This is beneficial in helping seniors make new friends and have conversations with people.

So if you’re thinking about owning a pet, adoption is the best option. There are plenty of adoption centers for pets in Brunswick County. Just remember, adopting a pet won’t help you change the world, but you certainly will change the world for that pet.

ust in time for Veteran’s Day, here are three books written by men who served.

“We could forgive fear, but not the inability to control it.”

Bring Out the Dog (2018) exposes the vagaries of war from a special forces operations perspective. During Iraqi and Afghanistani deployments, author Will Mackin jotted observations on his arm and MRE container flaps, then transcribed his notes into journals for the book.

The eleven stories range from stateside predeployment workups in North Carolina, Utah, and Virginia to war zone combat. The book viscerally connects the reader to the warrior.

Nutshell review: The true drama of war is a theater of the absurd playing out in the minds of soldiers who prepare for and fight battles and deal with the aftermath.

“Every war is different. Every war is the same.” Anthony Swofford’s Jarhead: A Marine’s Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles (2003) tells the stories of trained killers who talked tough but were scared kids. Jumping from boot camp to fighting to the aftermath of war while wondering about seemingly senseless death, this book is angry and profane throughout. Despite training as a Marine sniper he never took a shot, was abandoned by a girlfriend during the brief war, and alternates between

boredom at the lack of action and facing death in an Iraqi bunker. Nutshell review: This book offers no hype about military greatness or the glories of combat, but reveals a soldier disillusioned by his war experiences and left disconnected from the nation he fought to preserve.

“I want you to feel what I felt. I want you to know why story-truth is truer sometimes than happeningtruth.” Tim O’Brien’s semi-autobiographical novel The Things They Carried (1990) was written two decades post-Vietnam. It is 22 stories about soldiers of Alpha Company and what filled their pockets, hearts, and minds as they endured the war.

The tangibles soldiers brought into their missions ranged from necessities to absurdities—the intangibles ranged from guilt to fear. All the things had meaning: some saved lives, some took lives, some made the hellhole a bit easier, some encouraged the soldiers to persevere and hope for a future. Nutshell review: This book confronts the confusion and memories of death: it is gut-wrenching, heart-pounding, and soul-searching.

Succulent Wreath

A

succulent wreath is a beautiful way to add to your holiday table. There are many places to buy wreaths on line, but making your own wreath is not hard to do and will give you a sense of accomplishment.

The tools you need are a wire wreath form, long fiber sphagnum moss, potting mix, succulents, green florist wire, and ties.

Wreath forms are available from craft stores. The larger wreaths will hold water better and require less watering.

Wreaths can be made from plants or cuttings. If using cuttings, cut the stems 1 to 2 inches long, removing lower leaves. Allow cuttings to sit overnight on a tray to let the cut ends callus (form a thin layer of cells).

Recommended plants for living wreaths include Aeniums, Rosary vine, Crassulas, Echeveris, Euphorbias, Haworthias, Hens-and-chicks, Kalanchoes, and Sedums.

Prepare the sphagnum moss by soaking it in water in a bucket or the bathtub for an hour. Then squeeze the excess water out of the moss.

Pack the moss around the bottom and sides of the wreath mold.

After the shape has been covered by the moss, add potting soil. Leave an inch or so of space from the top of the soil and the top of the moss.

Then moisten the potting soil. Place the cuttings or plants in the soil.

Tuck more moss between the plants to hold the potting mix in

place. Tuck the moss in tightly. To secure the moss in place, use clips or ties. Use florist wire to wrap the wreath. Green florist wire is easier to hide under the plants. Let the wreath lie flat in indirect sunlight for two weeks.

Caring for your succulent wreath is very simple. Bright light is best with little or no direct sun. Water the wreath when it feels dry. Depending on the temperatures and the exposure, a good watering once every 1-3 weeks will be fine.

Fertilizing is needed since the

plants are not growing in a lot of soil. You can use an organic balanced liquid fertilizer. Once in the spring is fine, but if it looks like it is losing color, give it another feeding in late summer.

To rid the wreath of any pests like mealy bugs or aphids, spray them off with a garden hose. You can also treat them with a spray mixture of rubbing alcohol and water (one part alcohol to eight parts water). A healthy succulent wreath will look great on your Thanksgiving table and on your door next summer.

Volunteer Opportunities ON THE LOOKOUT FOR LEADERS !

Volunteers hold many special roles in our organization. There is one area of volunteerism we are looking to expand.

Volunteer Team Leaders at each location will make up our first BSRI Leadership Committee. This role will be similar to our Board, only these individuals will help advocate for and focus on the volunteers! This role will be vital to BSRI as we continue to grow and expand our programs and services.

BSRI’s Volunteer Program needs volunteers who can help manage other volunteers, make calls, schedule, report back to the volunteer coordinator and attend monthly or bi-monthly meetings. This role gives potential volunteers awesome personal growth opportunities. A Volunteer Team Leader will enhance and maintain their knowledge about leadership and management.

Volunteers for this role will need experience in working with people and management. They will also need to have computer skills and communication skills. This volunteer will need to be willing to learn our volunteer programs well enough to train new volunteers on proper procedures, and also make them feel welcomed into our organization. This volunteer will work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator and other staff to help make the volunteer program the best it can be!

BEHIND THE SCENES

Another example of an important role at BSRI is our volunteers who help behind the scenes in our admin roles! Loyal BSRI volunteer Sarah has been helping make email lists for our avid travelers. She comes in as needed to assist with making calls or updating email groups. In a couple hours she is able to make a big difference. This type of volunteering is so important to the success and expansion of our programs. Being able to reach more people with our services by creating a simple email list is a huge help!

There are so many volunteers at BSRI that do things behind the scenes that may not be as outwardly noticeable as something like Meals on Wheels. However, these volunteers who are willing to make calls, do some typing and updating are crucial to our everyday operations. We thank all of you who dedicate your time to help us make a difference. Every part of the human body is vital, just like every part of our volunteer team is vital!

who are socially and economically needy. Our older population continues to increase; about 10,000 citizens are currently waitlisted for services. The STHL requests the NCGA increase the Home and Community Care Block Grant funding by $7 million dollars in recurring funds.

There are 171 Senior Centers in 97 counties that provide programs and services to enhance the health and wellness of older adults. These services help elders remain independent, delaying the potential for costlier services or housing options. To maintain operation, senior centers must leverage resources from a variety of sources that include federal, state, and local governments, special events, participant contributions, grants, and volunteer hours.

Even with leveraging, funding for senior centers has not been able to meet the needs of the state’s increasing aging population. The STHL requests that the NCGA maintain the current General Purpose funding and increase this funding by a recurring $350,000 to continue to meet the vital needs of North Carolina’s growing population of older adults.

Project C.A.R.E. (Caregiver Alternatives to Running on Empty)

was developed by recommendation of a statewide task force to address Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. It provides caregiver support, care management, and referrals. It has become a national best practice model for providing respite services to family members who are caring at home for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. The STHL requests that the NCGA increase funding for Project C.A.R.E. in 2019-2020 by $500,000 and in future years by 10 percent annually.

North Carolina’s Adult Program Services Program (APS) is a core of services provided to vulnerable and older adults who are at risk of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. N.C. General Statute 108A, Article 6, Protection of the Abused, Neglected, or Exploited Disabled Adult Act, mandates county departments of social services provide APS to vulnerable and older adults who have been abused, neglected or exploited. Counties are struggling to locate funding to provide these mandated services and are relying on funding from county governments and a decreasing federal Social Services Block Grant. The only state funding, $2 million provided for the provision of APS, was eliminated in the SFY 2010-2012 State Budget.

The STHL urges the NCGA recognize and value its vulnerable citizens by making available $7 million in recurring funds in the state budget to meet the growing need for Adult Protective Services

and conduct an evaluation/review of these services to ensure this protection is adequate.

The positive relationship between nurse staffing levels and the quality of nursing home care has been demonstrated widely. The federal Nursing Home Reform Act (NHRA), as part of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) of 1987, requires minimum staffing levels for registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and a minimum educational training for nurse's aides (NAs), but fails to establish a specific requirement for minimum caregiver/resident ratio or a minimum standard for the number of hours per patient day that a resident should be receiving care.

In a nursing home, the CNA is the true point-person when it comes to providing adequate one-on-one care to the resident. The STHL recommends that the NCGA enact legislation which establishes a mandatory Standardized HPPD (hours per patient daily) or minimum staff-to-patient ratios for direct patient care, including enforcement standards and consequences to ensure quality care in nursing homes in the state of North Carolina.

Senior Spotlight Meet Jimmy!

“Enjoy today because that is all we have, and when tomorrow comes, that is that. Every day is a gift!”

This is what Leland Center Participant Jimmy Johnson said when asked to share some “words of wisdom.”

On September 10, 1933, Jimmy was born in East Lovett, Massachusetts, but moved to Long Island, NY in 1953, where he worked as a butcher and a school bus driver until retirement. Jimmy shared stories of how he used to decorate his bus for different holidays, which Jimmy said the kids absolutely loved. Jimmy said he is thankful for all of the gifts he has been given in life, including his three beautiful daughters, which he says are his biggest accomplishments. One of his daughters, Jeanne, recently taught a surprise Chair Yoga Class for Jimmy’s birthday here at the center, which was quite a hit!

Since moving to Leland two years ago with his daughter, Jimmy has brought so much joy to the BSRI at Leland Family. He attends daily exercise classes and encourages others to do the same. At the close of our conversation, he stated, “I am thankful for the center and that everyone is so wonderful and understanding.”

Thank you, Jimmy, for constantly making our days brighter and we are so lucky to have you!

If you don‟t personally know any veterans, you can send a thank you note any time of the year to our active (or retired) service men and women. Write a note to a veteran and let them know we are forever thankful for their courage and sacrifices.
