Jacqueline Delts is a member of the Leland Center. She and her husband, Gerald, have been married 45 years and are natives of Wilmington. They have two children, Inga and Ryan, and a grandchild, Alex. She is retired from civil service as a Branch Chief, Director and Trainer of Services, strengthening military families. “I want to know my friends are doing well,” Jackie says. “I love volunteering and giving back to my community.” Jackie tells us about Swedish Embroidery on page 19.

Pat Naughton and his family moved from Richmond, Va. to Winding River Plantation in Brunswick County in 2017 after Pat retired as a mechanical engineer at a nuclear power plant. He has been an avid gardener for 35 years and is a Brunswick County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer. Pat takes us on a worm-gardening journey on page 11.

Wendy Kaplar is a freelance writer, researcher, and advocate for the preservation of Carolina wildlife. She recently placed among the top columnists in The Albuquerque Journal 2022 Reader’s Choice awards. She enjoys spending time with her husband, Bob, and their rescue dog, Rosie. Wendy guides us to some fun summer activities on page 16.

After retiring from leadership roles in engineering and IT at a major confectionary manufacturer, Beth Klahre relocated to Southport with her husband, Jeff, and their dog, Betsy. Beth has been enjoying reading on the beach, learning to play the harp, and writing human-interest stories. She is a volunteer board member of the Friends of the Library of Oak Island and Southport. On page 12, Beth tells us about pet food pantries from Paws-Ability.

Joan Leotta has been playing with words on page and stage since her childhood in Pittsburgh. Her poetry and essays appear in many publications. Her four historical fiction novels feature strong women in times of U.S. wars, and her newest poetry chapbook, Feathers on Stone, was recently released. Joan rounds up cooling meals for hot summer days on page 21.

Donna Ruth Morgan is a book lover who supports better libraries for better communities. She volunteers with area library organizations and enjoys sharing her passion for reading with family and friends. See page 20 for Donna’s summer book reviews.

The 2023 Volunteer Appreciation Barbecue was fun for all! We loved getting together with volunteers just to have fun and celebrate the fantastic, essential work they do. DIGGING IN FOR NEW HOUSING

Brunswick County senior housing took a big step forward recently in Calabash.

In May, local dignitaries celebrated breaking ground on Calabash’s newest 55+ luxury living community, Calabash Shores Luxury Living. Brunswick County officials joined the BSRI board of directors, management, and other stakeholders to commemorate the beginning of construction on this important site.

BSRI President and CEO Jim Fish said, “Calabash Shores Luxury Living will be a beautiful place to meet the needs of seniors aged 55 and older while they continue to maintain their independence.”

AN AMAZING DONATION, AN AMAZING LIFE!

BSRI Thrift Stores recently received our largest donation ever from the family and estate of Cathy Hulbert Laney, who passed earlier this year. BSRI would like to thank local realtor David Stuart for referring Cathy’s family to us. And we’d like to thank Cathy and her family for this most generous gift.

A Special Donation

In late March, BSRI staff and volunteers picked up the contents of Cathy’s residence in Shallotte. We loaded up two box trucks three times and divided the donations between our Calabash and Shallotte stores. The donation included furniture, home décor, housewares, clothes, tools, sports and exercise equipment, and just about everything in between! We also picked up a large amount of shelf-stable food items for the food pantry at our Shallotte Center. We estimate this donation will likely generate about $10,000 to help BSRI provide programs and services for older adults in Brunswick County.

Cathy was a very special person, we soon learned. She was a unique,

ambitious, active woman with an adventurous spirit and love for life. She went to high school in Anaheim, California and accepted a nursing scholarship from the Army. She completed the first two years of the program at USC and finished the last two years at Walter Reed. Then she served in the Army for six years, then the Air Force for 17 years! She retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1992.

In the army, Cathy got involved in competition sky diving. While in Japan, she served as president of the Okinawa Marine Sport Parachute Club. Cathy also was a licensed pilot who logged many

hours flying small planes. She was interested in scuba diving, underwater photography, downhill skiing, and water skiing too.

A Love for Nursing

Cathy had a long and distinguished career in nursing and was a nurse practitioner working in pediatrics up until she died. She had a master’s degree in education and a second master’s degree in nursing from Rutgers University, where she also taught nursing. She also worked in nephrology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for 13 years.

She touched many lives and helped heal many with her expertise. We at BSRI would like to thank her and her family (daughters Nina and Cara and son Brett) for their most generous donation, which is sure to go a long way toward helping our local seniors. Thank you, Cathy, for being an amazing woman leading an amazing life that gave back to others in so many ways, and for sharing your donation with BSRI.

Volunteer Lights Up Leland Kitchen

Volunteers are the heart of Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc.! We couldn’t do it without you. Pat Wolfrum volunteers at The Brunswick Center at Leland. The Buzz asked her to share a little about herself and her life.

Buzz: What do you do as a volunteer with BSRI?

Wolfrum: I mainly help in the kitchen, with Meals on Wheels, help out with the food, and serve lunch. My husband Charlie and I help prepare shelf-stable meals for use in emergencies. We also help with cleanup; really, whatever the center needs.

Buzz: How did you find out about our organization?

Wolfrum: When we moved here from New Jersey 4 ½ years ago, we came right to the senior center to see what was available. I looked up areas that needed help with volunteers and voilà, Shelley gave me a call.

Buzz: How long have you been volunteering with us?

Wolfrum: Four years, through COVID and hurricanes.

Buzz: What do you like about volunteering?

Wolfrum: The people. I love the dining room and watching the participants mingling and having fun, coming here for comfort and friendship. We have lots of laughs, meeting new friends that we volunteer with or help serve. When we came on board they needed extra help so I recruited my husband, Charlie.

Buzz: What is your volunteer background?

Wolfrum: We volunteered in New Jersey in a soup kitchen for over 10 years, in a place called Project Self Sufficient. It’s an organization that helps people get back on track and back into the work force. We made Christmas and Thanksgiving baskets, collected prom dresses for girls—so many wonderful volunteer opportunities.

Buzz: Tell us a little about you and your interests.

Wolfrum: I’m a people person—volunteering is my main hobby. I’m from a big family that does a lot of

volunteering and caretaking for family members. I have a son, Ryan, and a daughter, Rachel, and my first grandson. Charlie and I love to take trips and learn more about the area. I like to ride my bike and walk, keep active. I love coming to the center and exercising. We have a blast at the center. I’m also active in my community.

I worked at a pharmaceutical company before becoming a stay-at-home mom. Charlie worked at a cable company for 42 years.

Buzz: What do you do in your free time?

Wolfrum: I like going to the Wilson Center. There is so much to do and see minutes from your house. I love restaurants, fun consignment stores, and discovering new places.

Turning Kitchen Scraps into Gold

Kitchen scraps in a landfill create harmful methane gas. Kitchen scraps in a vermicomposter create a nutrientrich soil amendment for plants.

Vermicomposting is easy to do. All it takes is a bin, bedding such as newspaper, cardboard, or leaves, and worms. Worms eat the food scraps and make worm castings (worm poop), which is nutrient-rich and helps to retain moisture.

Start with Red Wigglers

The best composting worms are Eisenia fetida (common name: red wiggler). Start with one pound (about 1,000) of red wigglers to one square foot of surface area of the worm bin to have a chance of developing a sustainable system. Red wigglers are available by mail.

Estimate the amount of food scraps you create in a week. One pound of red wigglers will eat up to two pounds of food scraps a week.

Adding more food scraps than the worms can eat will result in the food rotting and starting to smell. Come up short and you’ll be begging your neighbors for scraps.

Indoors or Out?

The climate in Brunswick County is perfect for outdoor vermicomposting but it can also be done indoors in a garage. Winding River resident Bob Gelinas has both. Bob started vermicomposting 8 years ago with a suspended fabric bag and 500 worms. Food scraps are added to the top of bag. The worms migrate to the top where the food is. After 6 months, remove compost from the bottom.

To improve the composting, Bob freezes the food scraps to help break them down, then thaws them. Since worms don’t have any teeth, he adds a little sand or eggshells every so often to aid their digestion. For bedding he uses shredded paper and cardboard.

Texas Tea

Wayne Huot, also a Winding River resident, keeps his outdoor vermicomposters in his shaded garbage bin enclosure. He started vermicomposting in Texas as a science project for his kids. He kept the composter in the garage due to the heat of Texas. While Wayne was on a family vacation, the neighbor taking care of the worms thought they might enjoy being outdoors.

It wasn’t long before they were all cooked and stunk to high heaven.

In 2014, after moving to Brunswick County, Wayne gave vermicomposting another try. He uses two Soilsaver compost bins that have a door at the bottom to remove compost. As the organic matter is consumed at the bottom of the bin, the worms move to the top for more food. Wayne highly recommends the book, “Worms Eat My Garbage.”

When adding the worm castings to his garden, Wayne always finds a few worms which he returns to the bin to do more work. He started off with 2,000 worms and now estimates he has over 500,000. Wayne goes through a 5-gallon bucket of food scraps from neighbors and family every week.

Southport resident Elizabeth Miller is the volunteer team lead for Paws Pantry. Before retiring to coastal Carolina, she volunteered in her hometown food pantry in Virginia.

“Some older ladies kept coming in, but they didn’t want fruits or veggies, just big bags of rice and meat products. I offered fruit which they always declined. They told me this was all they eat. And what their pets eat. It was then I realized these women were sharing their food with their pets,” Miller says.

A Humble Beginning

Miller planned to find a food pantry in the area when she moved to Southport in 2017. But there wasn’t one that provided pet food.

“So, I thought I better start one,” she says. Miller placed requests on social media for pet food donations. “It was amazing how responsive people were,” she recalls.

Miller did not stop there. Eventually she found a food pantry in Boiling Spring Lakes that agreed to distribute pet food. When Southport resident and Paws-Ability board of directors vice president Mary Beth Mount heard what Miller was doing, she invited

her to speak at Paws-Ability. And Paws Pantry was born.

“Paws-Ability was the perfect fit to expand my program,” Miller says. She has two cats and two dogs of her own, all rescues.

Food Insecurity in Brunswick County

Miller explains that due to the nature of where we live, there are many seasonal workers who find full time work in the summer, but only a few days a week in the off-season, causing fluctuations in their incomes. This affects both their own well-being and the wellbeing of their pets.

Brunswick County is daunting,” Miller says, noting that Brunswick County is one of the most foodinsecure counties in the country.

Expansion to Meals on Wheels

Paws Pantry expanded a second time when two of Miller’s friends who volunteer for Meals on Wheels found used trays from the prior deliveries on the floor near pet food bowls. They brought their concern to Miller. And now, two Meals on Wheels routes—the Supply route and the St. Peters Lutheran Church route—deliver pet food along with meals for adults.

“It’s wonderful to know that we are helping vulnerable people who are running short or under financial crisis. They no longer have to share their food with their pets,” Miller said.

Paws Pantry, which relies heavily on many dedicated volunteers, provides both wet and dry cat and dog food fulfilling 40% of a pet’s food requirements. Last year 44,000 pounds of pet food were delivered to Brunswick County food pantries and Meals on Wheels clients. Diligent portion control through partnerships with these reputable food pantries, which operate on defined criteria for human food portion control, ensure that approved clients with pets are being adequately served. Food pantry clients can pick up pet food either once per month or once every two weeks dependent on the location. Meals on Wheels clients receive a supply of pet food once every two months.

THE MANY FACETS OF PAWS-ABILITY

Paws-Ability raises funds to assist local animal rescue groups and to support programs to improve animal welfare in Brunswick and New Hanover Counties. Paws-Ability supports spay/neuter programs, supports Trap-Neuter-Return programs for community cats, and operates Stella’s Touch to help pet parents facing financial hardship with veterinary care for injury or illness.

Paws-Ability board of directors vice president Mary Beth Mount Mount, who has been involved in animal rescue since the 1980s and has three rescue cats and three rescue dogs of her own, said, “Paws-Ability is a unique organization that fills a gap in animal welfare that I have not seen anywhere else.”

In addition to fundraising, Paws-Ability provides assistance to rescues and pet guardians and educates to ensure animals receive the care and respect they deserve while maintaining the human-animal bond.

Since its inception in 2007, Paws-Ability, which has no paid employees and no physical location, has grown its fundraising and programs. Over 90% of the money raised goes directly to the animals.

Stroll and Shop at Sugarbritches

Sugarbritches is the very definition of a unique boutique with warm Southern charm. Located in Supply, this fun, family-friendly shop offers products from local artisans, including sustainable and upcycled, repurposed items. You can even purchase a Buddy By The Sea tee shirt as a memento to support service dogs for those in need. Sugarbritches is located at 3252 Holden Beach Rd SW in Supply, open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Dive into the Coast at The Coastal Carolina Museum

The Museum of Coastal Carolina, located in Ocean Isle Beach, is a natural history museum that educates visitors about the region’s natural and cultural history. Highlights include a touch tank with live marine animals; aquariums showcasing local marine life; exhibits exploring coastal ecosystems and local fossils; a diverse shell collection; and educational programs. The museum also features exhibits on the area’s Native American and European settler history. In the Summer 2023 lecture series, you can learn about coastal ecology and history. Lectures will be held in the morning and late afternoons. The museum is also seeking volunteers, and seniors are encouraged to apply. All-day admission is $9 for those 62 and older, or a combo ticket for admission to the museum and an Ingram planetarium show is $14 for seniors. Alligator Adventure in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, known as the “Reptile Capital of the World,” offers an engaging experience with wildlife including alligators, crocodiles, lemurs, and exotic birds. NC Marks Elder Abuse Awareness Month

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEEAD), June 15, is commemorated across the world. In North Carolina, this awareness event is extended from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day and recognized as Vulnerable Adult and Elder Abuse Awareness Month.

Executive Order Directs Statewide Support for NC’s Aging Population

Last month Governor Roy Cooper kicked things off by signing Executive order 280, which will support North Carolina’s aging population. The order has multiple directives. The NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and the NC Department of Commerce will convene a Caregiving Workforce Strategic Leadership group to bolster the caregiving workforce. The order also directs the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources to improve access to outdoor spaces, the NC Department of Transportation to improve transportation options, and the NC Department of Information Technology to improve access to broadband and digital literacy. It also directs NCDHHS to reform and improve the Adult Protective Services.

“Our rapidly growing and diverse older adult population strengthens our state and communities,”

Governor Cooper said. “We’re going to continue our work to make North Carolina the best place in the country to grow older.”

BSRI Aging Resource Staff Join APS Reform Team

The NC Dept of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) has selected professionals from various agencies and organizations across the state to help with these improvements. Three design teams will guide the process. The Consistency of Practice and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Reform Design Team will provide recommendations about strategies; the APS Statutory Improvement Reform Design Team will collaboratively provide direction and suggestions for improvements to APS statutes; and the Community Stakeholder Engagement and Education Design Team which will encourage all NC counties to have Multi-disciplinary Teams (MDT) in which community service providers meet to regularly to share information about improving services to elderly and vulnerable adults.

Poplaski will represent Brunswick County as team lead for the APS Reform Design Team MDT Subgroup.

“I am fortunate to have been selected to serve with my colleagues from across the state to improve Adult Protective Services. I feel like this is a lifetime opportunity, to be a part of something that is going to have a positive impact on the people of North Carolina for generations to come,” Poplaski said.

WEEAD events throughout the month of June will help educate the community on how to prevent and report abuse and how to advocate for policies that protect older adults and make NC an agefriendly state. Check your local senior center calendars for event times and dates.

The Craft of Swedish Huck Embroidery

Swedish Huck Embroidery, an almost lost art, is sometimes called Huck Weaving or Swedish Weaving. This is a form of embroidery that blends a bit of surface embroidery with weaving. Its name comes from huck cloth, the most common material used for this style of weaving, which originated in Sweden.

This craft dates back to the 17th century. Bobbie Wilson, Leland Center Craft Program Leader, introduced Peggy Woodcock to Swedish weaving over 30 years ago, and now they are both teaching women of different ages and backgrounds this wonderful craft.

Two Basic Stitches

There are basically two stitches used: looped and straight stitches. The yarn, chosen by the ladies, creates beautiful patterns by weaving strands over and under the grain of the fabric. However, if you make

one mistake in your even or odd count, it will throw your pattern completely off! We have all had to start over; we laugh with each other and keep working while enjoying each other’s company.

For our seniors, Swedish Embroidery increases hand-eye coordination, helps support fine motor skills, engages our color theory design, and improves our planning skills. It also helps with cognitive functioning and gives us a chance to socialize.

Elizabeth (Novella) Hasty, Norma Jean Cason, Phyllis Woolfe, and Armeta Graham enjoy working on their patterns. Although each lady is at different stages of development in their patterns, they all delight in seeing what their efforts and final product will look like. Each lady has a special reason for joining the craft class.

Brittany Steinkamp, Leland Center Director, saw a finished blanket and liked it so much she decided to try it out and make one for a friend. The blankets are beautiful, but the process of making them is very rewarding and challenging, and we are in no rush. We are doing it on our own time, in our own way, and enjoying every moment.

Hot Picks for Cool Summer Reading

In Brunswick County, summer is a great time for reading. Whether you’re enjoying a breeze on the screen porch or huddled in a cozy chair in the air conditioning, the best company is a good book. You can find these recently-published choices at Brunswick County libraries.

Someone Else’s Shoes by the popular Jojo Moyes (2023) is over four hundred pages of easy-to-predict plot dynamics and dramatic scenarios. The idea that a pair of shoes can change a woman’s life is a bit over the top, but this author deftly manages her protagonists through multiple sub-plots and twists. Nutshell review: Laughaloud elements of revenge and female bonding make this rom-com a nice escape from reality.

My anticipation of Lessons in Chemistry (2022) as a celebration of female scientific acumen and achievements with a side of humor were dashed. Bonnie Garmus serves up a menu of

evil against females: domestic violence, bullying, misogyny, and rape (graphic— no smiles there!). One-dimensional characters are caught in a miasma of male-bashing, pervasive anti-religion and 21st- century grudges. Ugh! Nutshell review: The only likeable element is Chase the dog.

What predicts health and wellbeing? Robert Waldinger and Marc Schultz share the process and outcome of two long-term

Harvard studies in The Good Life (2023). Scientific analysis and real-life narratives provide insights into a successful, happy existence. Worksheets and exercises help readers identify issues under their control. Nutshell review: Relationships, a sense of purpose, and attitude are important elements on the path to well-being.

Charming characters in

Remarkably Bright Creatures (2022) grapple with loss, aging, and belonging. Connections between generations, reunited loved ones, and the perfect ending are a bit fantastical—but appropriate for a novel featuring a sentient octopus as narrator. Shelby Van Pelt’s foray into authorship is well-written and engaging. Nutshell review: No political commentary—just highlyrecommended realistic fantasy.

Jellyfish Age Backwards (2023) by molecular biologist Nicklas Bernburg presents solid science behind aging and behavior choices that may (or may not) extend our lifespans. The author examines “immortality” in plants and animals in his inquiry into longevity—an almost magical process as presented. Nutshell review: Entertaining and educational for anyone curious about longevity.

Choose Cool Foods on Hot Days

One of the best ways to keep cool is to stay hydrated. Cool water is the best for this. You can amp up regular water by choosing a brand that has more electrolytes, minerals that help keep your body at optimum performance. Or you can add fruit, cucumbers, or herbs to plain water and leave it in the fridge.

But people do not exist on water alone. What’s good to eat on a hot day? Preparing veggies, proteins, and fruits can be a matter of simply rinsing and eating raw. But cooked foods can still have a place in your summer diet.

Raw foods and salads, with hydrating tomato, cucumber, and

lettuces, topped with canned beans or cheeses or canned proteins, are a simple, non-cook option.

Cook early in the day: I like to roast chicken because that is delicious cold. Bake your favorite meatloaf recipe early in the morning and then, when it’s done, cool and move it to the fridge. You can heat individual slices or use cold slices for sandwiches.

Use your microwave as a steamer: Many vegetables release more of their vitamins when cooked. Summer is time for quick, easy, low heat. Place cut veggies in a casserole dish with a quarter-cup of water, then steam for a short time. Add salt, pepper, butter, and herbs.

A Yummy, Quick, Nutritious Meal

You don’t have to stand over a hot stove to make beans and rice or that delicious gluten-free grain called quinoa (keen-wha). You can find already cooked frozen, steamin-the-bag versions of quinoa and rice (brown or white). There are even rice-and-quinoa mixes in most supermarket freezers. See the recipe below for a fast, cool, nutritious and delicious meal.

Read the bags carefully to find out if there are any seasonings or other ingredients you don’t want.

With these frozen helpers, you can have a carb, veggie, and protein delight on the table in just a few minutes.

MAKE IT YOUR WAY: BASIC RECIPE RICE OR QUINOA + PROTEIN DINNER

Serves 2

1 bag of frozen plain white or brown rice or quinoa (12-16 ounces)

Canned tuna; or leftover chicken, 1.2 cup per person; or rinsed canned beans, ½ cup per person

A few leaves of lettuce, optional

Chopped cherry or other tomato

Salt and pepper to taste (omit this if you buy a seasoned rice or quinoa blend)

Oil and/or other seasoning, to taste

Heat frozen rice or quinoa in the microwave, following the directions on the bag. Put the lettuce leaves on the bottom of each person’s plate or bowl. Divide the cooked rice into two bowls or onto two plates. Top with tomatoes.

For an Italian flavor profile: Add olive oil, vinegar, and Italian seasoning and some Italian cheese or feta.

For Asian flavors: Add some ginger and toasted sesame oil.

June Is Men’s Health Month

June is the month that we celebrate dads. What better time is there for men to get their health screenings scheduled?

If you are a man with Medicare coverage, now is the time to talk with your doctor about getting screened for prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

Medicare covers prostate screenings once every 12 months for men over 50 and the colorectal screening tests every 120 months, unless at high risk. Cardiovascular screenings can detect conditions

that could lead to heart attack or stroke and are covered by Medicare once every five years.

Stay Healthy in July

You can live a healthy lifestyle and prevent disease by exercising, eating well, maintaining a healthy weight, and not smoking.

Medicare can help. Medicare pays for many preventive services to help keep you healthy. Preventive services can find health problems early and fight off certain diseases. If you have Medicare, you can get

Diane Hart is from Bronx, NY. Diane has been a volunteer at CCAL Shallotte Senior Center since the year 2020. She was a Head Start preschool teacher for many years before her move to Brunswick Co. Diane says, “I love the summer months because my children and grandchildren come down to visit frequently from NY to the beach.” The summer months also bring her joy because she loves to garden and plant flowers.

Allyson Borden is a participant and a volunteer at The Shallotte Senior Center. Allyson is a big help and a delight to have at our center. She visits our center every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Allyson loves to come to our center to help out others and play bingo!

Allyson loves the summer months because she likes to go swimming and play golf. She will also go on a trip out of state to see her boyfriend Dale this summer! She is a superb member of CCAL.

Donald Spivey and Joseph Bowden

Two American Air Force Airmen

Donald is from Dallas NC and served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Spain from 1960 to1964. He had a pool buddy in Spain who was also stationed at the same base in the U.S. Air Force whose name was Joseph Bowden. They played pool and had great conversations. Then they went their separate ways after doing their tour in Spain.

Many years later, these two airmen met up at the Shallotte Senior Center Billiards room and realized with a brief chat they knew each other back in Spain when they were serving in the Air Force. What a story and how small the world is! Donald recently learned that Joseph has since passed on and that was a hard moment for him. Donald will always remember their true story of how these two U.S. Air Force Airmen went from Spain to meet up again at Coastal Carolina Active Living. Life is full of great memories! We thank you both for your service! Independence Day means the world to Donald and he likes to celebrate with a fireworks show and family cookouts. He is proud of our country and loves what our flag stands for, freedom.
