This painting reflects the enduring influence of George Morland, a prolific British artist known for his rustic scenes of rural life, which were widely reproduced and celebrated in his time. Despite his turbulent lifestyle-marked by financial troubles, heavy drinking, and periods of imprisonment-Morland produced an astonishing body of work exceeding 4,000 paintings. His compositions were often copied by pupils and followers, making attribution complex. The present work, while not matching the brighter palette of his assistant Thomas Hand, features hallmarks of Morland’s style: a solitary country figure, naturalistic clothing, and a contemplative mood. It is a fine period example of the genre he helped define.

William Ashford, though born in Birmingham, spent nearly his entire career in Ireland, where he became the country’s leading landscape painter of the late 18th century. Initially employed by the Ordnance Office in Dublin, he began painting in his spare time, starting with still lifes before transitioning to classical landscapes. His extensive travel across Ireland likely influenced his topographical style, which appealed to both Irish aristocrats and English audiences. Ashford exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy and the Society of Artists in London, and later served as the first president of both the reformed Irish Society of Artists and the newly founded Royal Hibernian Academy. Known for serene, well-ordered landscapes influenced by Dutch masters, he catered to the tastes of the Anglo-Irish elite. Though largely self-taught, his works were highly praised in his time and are now held in major collections across the UK and Ireland, including the Fitzwilliam Museum and the National Trust.

Queen and Regent of France, unsigned, a version of the Louvre copy of the 1826 original, circa last quarter 19th century, oil on panel, 10-5/8 x 7-5/8 in.; fine neoclassical gilt wood and composition frame, 19-1/4 x 16-5/8 in.
Patrick Noon suggests that this painting may depict a scene from either Madame de Motteville’s Memoirs (1723) or Jean Ruget de la Serre’s History and Portraits of the Empresses and Princesses of the House of Austria (1648). Bonington’s main goal appears to have been to show the overlap between the personal and political lives of Anne of Austria (1601-1661) and Cardinal Mazarin (1602-1661). Mazarin’s influence over the French monarchy during the Regency is suggested through his prominent figure, Anne’s anxious gestures, and the shadowed presence of Louis XIV in the background.

His work spoke to social issues of the time and was admired for its storytelling without excessive sentimentality. He began drawing at age eight and decided to become a painter at seventeen, influenced by the Informalist movement and artists like Antoni Tàpies. During this time, he also explored Cubism and Surrealism, particularly through the work of Salvador Dalí, before committing to realism. In 1986, Carbonell immigrated to Mexico, where he married María Gabriela Miranda and started a family. He is the father of four children and currently resides in Querétaro. Known for his technical mastery and self-taught discipline, Carbonell has become a leading figure in hyperrealism. However, he emphasizes that his goal is not to replicate reality or photography, but to invent from them, creating new perspectives rooted in observation. Tony Roberts of Cider House opined it was Flemish School after a long-lost original by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger. Gheeraerts the Younger was popular among nobles and monarchs, and as such, kept a staff of apprentices and assistants. It is believed this copy may be a reproduction by one of those assistants.
The sitter, Sir Francis Norris, was ill-tempered and of a volatile nature. He was twice convicted, first for manslaughter following his killing of a servant bystander during a duel (for which he was pardoned by James I), and then for striking one Lord Scope in the House of Lords. For this latter crime, he was jailed and made to apologize before the Prince. Overwhelmed by the embarrassment of this incident, he allegedly went to his home and shot himself with a crossbow, dying of the wound two days later. However, given his temperament and considerable number of disputes and enemies, some believe he may have been murdered.

This particular piece portrays a lively winter scene with figures skating, conversing, and going about daily life in a well-rendered village setting. Architectural elements and natural textures add depth and realism to the composition, creating a calm and inviting atmosphere despite the cold subject matter. De Klerk, a native of Dordrecht, studied under Adrianus van der Koogh and exhibited in notable venues such as the Galerie des Arts in The Hague. Although little is known about his personal life, he married in 1840 and traveled through Europe, experiences that influenced his work. He later relocated to Germany before his death.

Popular with Western artists, the story centers on Susanna, a virtuous woman who is unjustly accused by two older men after she rejects their advances. On the verge of execution, the prophet Daniel reveals the elders’ deceit, ultimately saving Susanna and restoring justice. This enduring tale has inspired numerous artists throughout history, from Italian masters such as Tintoretto and Gentileschi to later figures like Picasso and Thomas Hart Benton. Classic elements are evident in the portrayal of Susanna’s ethereal beauty, the elders’ richly colored garments, the distant ruins, and the dark garden fountain, each detail contributing to the painting’s lasting emotional and visual resonance.

Estimate: $600 - $900
Jean-Baptiste Pigalle was one of the leading sculptors of the 18th century, known for blending Baroque and emerging Neoclassical styles during the reign of Louis XV. Coming from modest beginnings, he overcame early challenges to achieve fame, largely thanks to his acclaimed marble sculpture Mercury, which secured his place in the Royal Academy and brought numerous royal commissions. Mercury became iconic for its dynamic pose, suggesting movement and energy, and remains admired for its craftsmanship and symbolism. Pigalle also created a companion piece of Venus and presented both to Frederick II of Prussia. The popularity of Mercury led to many reproductions, including porcelain versions and later bronze castings in the 19th century. Though the bronze version described here bears no maker’s mark, its quality suggests it may have been produced by Maison Barbedienne, a prominent French foundry known for high-end reproductions. Such pieces were luxury items, reflecting both artistic achievement and the evolving taste of collectors across Europe and America.

Jean-Baptiste Pigalle was a significant figure in 18th-century French sculpture, known for integrating elements of both Baroque and emerging Neoclassical styles. Rising from modest beginnings, he gained recognition with his sculpture Mercury, a work notable for its dynamic composition and technical precision. This piece secured his place within the Royal Academy and led to important commissions from prominent patrons, including members of the royal court. Mercury became widely admired for its portrayal of poised movement and balance, contributing to Pigalle’s lasting reputation. The sculpture was later reproduced in various materials, including porcelain and bronze, and became a sought-after model in both European and American collections. The bronze example referenced here, though lacking a foundry mark, is of high quality and may be attributed to a leading 19th-century French foundry known for producing editions of popular works. Pigalle’s contributions reflect the artistic transitions of his time and his role in shaping French sculpture before the Revolution.

Follower or Circle of Jacques Louis David, Portrait of a Belgian Diplomat (French, 1748-1825)
Gentleman in black coat with embroidered collar, with order medals, unsigned, oil on canvas, 25-1/2 x 21-1/4 in.; possibly original Empire gilt wood and composition frame, 32 x 26-7/8 x 3-1/8 in., lined with paste and linen, restretched on old stretcher with some auction numbers, scattered light retouch, craquelure, abrasions at edges; frame with some conservation
Provenance: Private Collection, Atlanta, Georgia; Brunk Auctions, September 21, 2013, lot 269; Virginia Private Collection
Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000
The portrait likely depicts a young diplomat in 1820s Belgium, based on the sitter’s attire, the canvas’ age, and the painting style. Influences of Neoclassical master Jacques-Louis David, then exiled in Brussels, are evident in the precise, polished technique. David’s presence in Belgium attracted wealthy patrons and inspired local artists, one of whom may have created this work. Diplomatic uniforms, introduced in France and adopted across Europe, were ornate, symbolizing rank through elaborate embroidery. These uniforms, common among noble diplomats, featured tailcoats, breeches, bicorne hats, and swords, and were eventually phased out in the 20th century. David died in exile after a carriage accident. Denied burial in France for his revolutionary ties, he was interred in Brussels, though his heart was later buried in Paris. The sitter’s identity remains unknown, though his intense gaze and resemblance to a modern political figure continue to intrigue.

This painting by Danish artist Erik Ludwig Henningsen depicts conductor and composer Georg Hoeberg at his final concert performance in Copenhagen, shortly after his 1930 retirement. Flowers at his feet and floodlights on his face evoke a moment of quiet tribute, while a solitary figure behind the curtain adds a subtle emotional counterpoint. Exhibited in 1931, the work is both a personal and cultural homage to Hoeberg, a significant figure in Danish music whose legacy includes the earliest known recording of a Carl Nielsen symphony. Erik Henningsen, a graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, was known for both light-hearted social scenes and poignant social realism. Though overshadowed by modernist movements, his detailed, narrative style has gained renewed attention. Internationally recognized in his lifetime, he received major awards in Berlin and Munich and became widely known for his iconic Tuborg poster, The Thirsty Man, still used today. His body of work spans genre, history, and social commentary, and is well represented in the Hope Gallery, Utah, which has played a key role in reviving interest in Danish naturalist painting.

Recognized for his attention to detail, he was commissioned by the Museum of Natural History in Paris to illustrate seasonal botanical works. He exhibited regularly at major Parisian salons and became a familiar figure in Montmartre during the Belle Epoque, known for capturing lively, joyful scenes filled with character. A standout year for Mesplès was when he showcased vibrant portraits of dancers, including the celebrated Cléo de Mérode, and was honored with a knighthood. He later composed music and patriotic songs, remaining active and creative throughout his life. He died in Paris, remembered for his versatility and artistic spirit.

Ethan Allen Greenwood was a portrait painter, lawyer, and museum proprietor best known for founding the New England Museum in Boston in the early 19th century. A graduate of Dartmouth College and trained in law at Harvard, Greenwood turned to art and became a prolific portraitist, painting hundreds of miniatures and oil portraits during his career. His diary, which he kept for decades, offers rich insights into early American art, society, and museum culture. Greenwood’s dual role as artist and entrepreneur helped shape the cultural landscape of early Boston, making him a notable figure in the history of American art and museum development.

The location of the farm depicted is unknown but the gentleman at the right is wearing a Union Army uniform which suggests the North. The layout and use of birds below the central oval suggests a familiarity with fraktur as a means of marking important family occasions. The two women in veils appear to be pulling back the curtain to reveal a group who are on the other side, possibly deceased. This idea is mirrored in the two trees that have been felled and create part of the supporting design along the bottom edge.
