PREMIER DIVISION IN FOCUS: BACK WITH A BANG The Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup is back with a bang, and the 81st version of the ACT’s premier club rugby competition promises to be one of the most exciting to date. With seven teams vying for four playoff places, every game in this tournament matters because right up until the end of the season, any team can put a run together and join the top ranks.

In today’s Hahn Superdry Match of the Round, the defending Champions Tuggeranong Vikings take on the Gungahlin Eagles at Viking Park. The last time the two sides met saw the Vikings run all over the Eagles in the Preliminary Final, which set up the Vikings Grand Final Victory the following week.

That was a tough day for the Eagles, but they will draw strength for the battles to come and from what was a miraculous season ending run to finish 2018. In 2019, Vikings have been installed as heavy preseason favourites with many of Nick Scrivener’s title

winning charges returning for another run at it this year. Whilst the Vikings are touted as eventual Champions, the Eagles are shaping as being this season’s dark horses, so expect fireworks in this Round one meeting.

In the only other fixture in Round One [Easts, Wests and Uni-Norths Owls have the bye] Queanbeyan Whites welcome 2018 GrandFinalists Canberra Royals to David Campese Field. There is a sense of mystery surrounding both these sides, the pair having lost some key figures in the offseason.

Wisdom would suggest that Royals will still be way up there in the final standings, given the quality that remains in the likes of Ben Johnston, Pedro Rolando and Luke Kimber, but the Whites are definitely more of an unknown quantity. Queanbeyan will be relying on youth to get them back in the playoffs this year, and we will know way more about their potential for 2019 after the final whistle this afternoon.

VIKINGS LOOK TO BUILD ON LAST YEAR’S SUCCESS

The Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup, Canberra’s premier club rugby competition, kicks off this weekend and fans across the ACT and Southern NSW will flock to ovals around the region to watch their team. Last year’s competition was won, of course, by the Tuggeranong Vikings, claiming victory over Royals in a gripping Grand Final 29-17.

It was the Vikings’ seventh title in ten years, but ahead of this season’s big kick-off against the Gungahlin Eagles this Saturday at Viking Park, Vikings’ Head Coach Nick Scrivener says the competition will be a tightly contested one.

“The past two years if you look at the standings and the table, they changed quite a bit from 2017 to 2018,” said the former Wallabies and Brumbies assistant coach. “The competition is healthy and there’s not a set order of teams. Some teams didn’t make the finals last year that traditionally do and some teams, like Gungahlin and Uni-

Norths, came up and made the finals.

There’s a lot of movement which means that it’s a really competitive competition.”

In 2018 the Tuggeranong Vikings had easily the most effective attack in the competition, scoring 528 points over the season which was over 100 points more than their nearest competitors Royals.

Scrivener says this season his side will need to improve in areas across the park if they are to make the finals again.

“While we want to attack well, we know the other teams have improved their attack, so we need to defend well as well,” explained Scrivener. “So that’s probably the area we’ve been concentrating on more in the preseason, our defence rather than our attack.”

However, the Head Coach doesn’t want his team to get ahead of themselves. When asked about what the Vikings are doing to defend their title, Scrivener explained that the teams only goal, at the moment, is to play good rugby.

“It’s something that we haven’t spoken about,” he revealed. “We’ve got to raise the bar basically in lots of areas to keep competitive. We’re not talking about defending titles or whatever, we’re just trying to play and get our club going.

Basically, our general goal is to make finals and from there give ourselves a chance.”

The Vikings first match of the season, against the Eagles, is likely to provide a stern test. Gungahlin went on an incredible run towards the end of last season to surge into the finals, before being defeated by the eventual Champions in a Preliminary Final.

Canberra’s rugby lovers.“I think they’re gonna be really strong. From what I hear they’ve recruited good, there’s a lot of good things going on out there,” said the coach.

“They’re building their club up and if you look at how they finished last year, they won 7,8 or 9 games at the end to make the finals so they’re definitely a club that’s improving and I’m picking them as one of the strongest clubs this year for sure.”

Scrivener is predicting the Eagles will be a tough team to beat this year, making this match up an exciting one for

THE JOHN “JACK” MAGUIRE CUP The late John “Jack” Maguire will be recognised when Queanbeyan Whites play Canberra Royals in Round One of the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup at Campese Oval this weekend. Each season the Whites and Royals play for the Cup at Queanbeyan’s home game in the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup. Jack passed away at the age of 61 in January after a battle with cancer. He played in a Premiership team for Royals in 1977 and then went onto become a premiership winning player with the Whites, being named First Grade Best and Fairest in 1980. A prolific goal kicker, and a memorable character, he will be remembered by the Whites, Royals and his last club, Uni-Norths.

Jack’s formative years were at St. Brigid’s School, Daramalan College and finally at Waverley College where he played in the first XV. After leaving school, Jack joined Royals following in the

footsteps of his father “Happy” Maguire, a legendary representative half-back. Jack was a member of the Royals Premiership team of 1977 and their 1978 Semi-Final side which lost to the Whites 13-4. He joined Queanbeyan in 1979 and played in the Grand Final which the Whites lost to Royals 13-12 following a drop-goal from Michael O’Connor after the hooter.

Jack went on to play with the Whites until 1984 and became the 21st player to achieve 100 First Grade games for Queanbeyan. He was the club’s, and the competitions, leading point scorer in 1980 (200 points), 1981 (215) and 1982 (217).

In 1979 he was named the club’s Most Consistent and in 1980 was the First-Grade Best and Fairest. He represented the ACT on several occasions, including a win over Queensland in 1977 and a victory over the touring Wales team in 1978.

(Canberra Royals, ACT, NSW) 2 Tests A goal-kicking centre three-quarter who played for Australia in two Tests against New Zealand in 1962. He won selection from the Canberra Royals Clun with an outstanding display for the NSW side which defeated the All Blacks 12-11 the week before the first Test.

He was one of those responsible for subduing the New Zealand inside backs, but he could not repeat the performance in the Tests.

Scott landed two penalty goals on his Test debut and converted Dick Thornett’s try in the second Test, but his prospects of a longer career in international rugby faltered when he played for the Southern NSW against the All Blacks in Canberra. The All Blacks scored nine second-half tries to win 58-6, and Scott was missing when the Australian team to tour New Zealand later that year was announced.

(Queanbeyan, NSW Country, NSW) 4 Tests A 177.5cm (5ft 11in), 77kg (12st 2lb) fullback who scored a record 79 points on the Australian tour of South Africa in 1963 – 16 points better than Queenslander Tom Sweeney’s previous best by an Australian on a South African tour, scored I 1953. His record lasted until 1969 when John Ballesty scored 89 points. Ryan was an attacking player who joined the three-quarter line frequently, a splendid left-foot kicker, but suspect in defence. Born 2 April 1940, he was educated at St. Joseph’s College, Sydney, and represented GPS firsts in the same team as Ken Catchpole in 1957. He played two Tests in 1963, the first in Sydney against England when his three goals helped Australia to a shock 18-9 win, and the second on tour in South Africa. Despite his high points tally, he was not the No.1 fullback, and played second fiddle to Terry Casey in three of the four Tests. Ryan played in the two Tests against Great Britain in Australia in 1966, but Casey was preferred when the Wallaby team to tour Britain, France and Canada was picked.

Not long before the team left, Casey withdrew because of an injury and Ryan took his place, but Lenehan played fullback in all Tests on the tour. Ryan runs a dry-cleaning business in the Australian Capital Territory.

The Women’s competition won’t kick-off for another couple of weeks but, in the meantime, all eyes are glued to the Buildcorp Super W as Adam Butt and his side have advanced to the Finals for the first-time. They’ll face Queensland in Brisbane this weekend for a place in the Grand Final where New South Wales await the victors. Here’s how they achieved the feat.
