Verwijzingen naar geschiedenis, vermomd materiaalgebruik en decoratie werden geherintroduceerd. De postmoderne houding gaat gepaard met relativering van waarden en biedt ruimte aan cultuuruitingen die buiten de geijkte canon vallen. Na een laatste opflakkering van ‘stilistisch’ modernisme in de jaren negentig lijkt er in de nieuwe eeuw een heel nieuwe verhouding met het modernisme en haar functionalistische dogma’s te ontstaan.
Functie De kunstenaar Pablo Reinoso stelt composities van Thonet-stoelen samen, waarbij hij bewust de functie ondermijnt. De stoelen van de in 1853 opgerichte Thonet-fabriek werden door modernistische architecten zoals Le Corbusier (1887-1965) en Mies van der Rohe (1886- 1969) gewaardeerd vanwege het eenvoudige industriële uiterlijk van de stoelen en de rationele productie en assemblagemethode.9

Postmodern architecture and design reacted by opposing modernistic dogmas, and reintroduced references to history, disguised materials and decorative elements. Postmodernism is associated with putting values into perspective and allowing room for cultural expression outside the traditional canon. After a final flickering of ‘stylistic’ modernism in the nineties, there were signs of a new relationship developing with modernism and its functionalistic dogmas in the new century.

Function The artist Pablo Reinoso assembles compositions of Thonet chairs in which he deliberately undermines their function. The chairs produced by the Thonet factory, which was established in 1853, were valued by modernist architects like Le Corbusier (18871965) and Mies van der Rohe (18861969) for their simple industrial appearance and the rational method of production and assembly.9 Reinoso uses the Thonets as an expressive medium.
