Good afternoon and welcome to our visitors from Merstham. Thinking about links with the Moatsiders, I remember a player of ours from the 1990s called Micky Sullivan who played in midfield and went on to have a very successful career as their manager. Anyway, after the heavy rain frost and cold is now an issue. Let's hope that this is not another programme aborted because of a postponement. At least we don't have the issue of wasted print costs. December is a busy month with five more games to play. It could be a decisive month in terms of whether the sunlit uplands of the top half of the table come into view or we're consigned to another scrap to stay out of the bottom two. Let's be positive and go for the former. On our day we know we're capable of matching any team in this division. All we need is to be more consistent. COME ON THE WASPS! MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone and welcome to today’s game against Merstham. Off the back of last week's terrible result away at Beckenham I’ve had a chance to reflect a little on the game. A newly appointed management team there which was unannounced during the week probably caught us a little off guard as they had made three or four decent additions and their management team got the “new manager” bounce from the players. The game couldn’t have started any worse with an early injury to Jerson Dos Santos after only 25 minutes so we had to change the shape. To add to this was the sending off for Connor Tighe after only 32 minutes.

Drew Cooney

Injuries are starting to mount up now and with the red card to Connor meaning we will lose him for three games so it’s going to be a really tough December, but I am looking now to secure a few new faces to freshen things up before the busy December period which will see us play seven games in four weeks. As ever we need and ask for as much local support both home and away over the coming few weeks. Thanks again and please get behind the boys this afternoon.

Drew

I knew then it was going to be a long afternoon. I had no real arguments with the sending off, a little harsh maybe but a needless challenge on the halfway line right in front of their dugout and the ref was only going to do one thing.

Even after the sending off we had chances but all in all we deserved nothing from the game and the players afterwards were asked by me to ask a few honest questions about themselves. Today's game will be another tough one, since Jamie has come in over at Merstham they have picked up well so we will have to be at our best today to get the maximum three points we want and need.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for this afternoon’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Merstham. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Wasps supporters, the Merstham players, management, officials and supporters as well as today’s referee Benjamin Mcdonald and his assistants Nicholas Monkman and Nik Garside. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality. Since taking over the reins from Tony Reid at the start of October when the Moatsiders were at the foot of the table with one point from five games, Jamie Decruz’s Merstham have won three, drawn two and lost three in the league. Thay are now in 14th place, just one point and place below Wasps although they have played two more matches. They played at home against AFC Croydon Athletic on Tuesday evening in the Surrey Senior Cup and lost to a 39th minute goal, which surprisingly wasn’t scored by their recent signing Louis Theophanous. Jamie Decruz has brought in a number of new players and had a dream start, beating Beckenham 4-3, then lost to Ashford United, followed by another win against Sheppey United. Their last league match was a 1-1 draw at home against Horndean last Saturday.

The last time today’s two teams played each other was five years ago in the FA Trophy and the last league match was back in February 2015 which Wasps won by a single goal scored by our Steve Sargent. Wasps are away next Saturday at Sheppey United and then back here at East Court the following Tuesday when we host Sittingbourne. We make the short journey to Three Bridges on Saturday 16th December and then host Sittingbourne on Boxing Day (ko 3pm) although our recently postponed match at home against Lancing may be rescheduled to Tuesday 19th but this has not yet been confirmed. The next football here will be this coming Thursday when our Under 18s host Leatherhead in the Isthmian Youth Central League (ko 7.30pm). Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.

Enjoy the match Richard Tramontin (Chairman)

Drew Cooney’s Wasps suffered a 3-0 defeat at Beckenham Town last Saturday. We created enough good chances in the first 15 minutes to be 3-0 up and then conceded totally against the run of play in the 20th minute to a bizarre goal with the ball being blocked three times in the box and each time falling at the feet of an opponent until it sneaked in at the fourth attempt. Things then went further down hill when Connor Tighe was shown a red card just before half-time. We started the second half brightly but conceded a second on the hour which I’m sure VAR would have overruled for offside followed by a third 5 minutes later. Wasps are currently in 13th place with 13 points from 11 matches.

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST

10

www.egtfc.co.uk

Now I’ll just go back some 6 years for an Isthmian League game East Grinstead v Sittingbourne on 2 December 2017. The club notes start by telling us that South Park, our opponents for our home Boxing Day game, had agreed to move the match back to the next day. It would allow our match day helpers – and indeed players - to spend Boxing Day with family and friends. The programme’s league table shows Sittingbourne in eighth place while we are third from bottom. So we were pleased to have got a point on the previous Saturday away to midtable Herne Bay. We have a few photos by our camera man Stuart Gibson, including Will Hoare scoring our second goal, alongside the match report. It would be good to have followed up that away draw with a home match win, or even a home match draw. But it was Sittingbourne who took the points home with a 3-1 win – Jordy Mongoy scoring our goal. If you’ve had your memory jogged by this piece then I’d be happy to hear from you at lestermedcalf@btinternet.com.

A terrific picture on the cover of our programme six years ago

I’m going back nearly 30 years for my first look at a programme for a game played in the past on today’s date – East Grinstead v Newhaven on Saturday 2 December 1995. The game was a first round tie in the glamorous sounding Sussex County League Division Two Cup. One rather unusual feature of the game was that we had a lady – Lesley Cullen – running a line. Our programme was an extremely busy one with lots and lots to read. Bruce Talbot’s notes start with a reminder that we had already played Newhaven twice – winning 4-2 in our first home league match of the season and then losing in Newhaven by the same score, after extra time, in the Sussex Senior Cup. Newhaven’s reserve team also gets a mention as they had beaten our reserves on the previous Saturday 5-3 – our 3 goals all coming from Robbie Lewis though he missed a penalty which would have brought us level at 4-4. (The same player was now about to start a 49-day ban!) Later in the programme we are told that the previous week’s first team draw at home to Worthing United made it 9 league games without a defeat while – despite that defeat at Newhaven – our reserves were top of their league. The programme’s division 2 league table shows us in fourth place – four of those unbeaten nine games being draws – while Newhaven were a couple of places below us. So how did our third game against Newhaven go? We started very brightly but it was Newhaven who took the lead after 20 minutes from a penalty. Five minutes later Doug Cashman levelled things up and shortly before half-time Steve Banks’ first goal of the season put us ahead. Early in the second half an own goal put Newhaven back on level terms and then a second successful penalty put them ahead. However Roger Gualtieri soon levelled things up at 3-3 and that’s how it ended, despite extra-time being played. The replay took place two weeks later and this time we won 2-1 after going 1-0 down. Phil Richardson and Steve Banks scoring our goals.

CLUB NOTICE Supporter Behaviour In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match. Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.

Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA. We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead. As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

Delight for Glenn Wilson after his goal at Littlehampton

Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.

Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

TODAY’s GUEsTs

MERSTHAM MERSTHAM’S RECENT HISTORY When Covid curtailed the 2019/20 season Merstham were fighting relegation and sat in 21st place in the Isthmian premier, although with home games against relegation rivals to play most were confident that the drop could be avoided. The 20/21 season lasted just 11 games before the surge in Covid cases brought the new season to an inevitable halt. When football finally returned at the start of the 2021/22 season, the Moatsiders made a decent start in the league and progressed through two rounds of the FA Cup before losing at home to Hereford United. In the FA Trophy, Welwyn Garden City came to the Moatside and caused something of an upset by winning comfortably 3-0. In November, the team went through a purple patch of form with the front two of Korrey Henry and John Ufuah forming a lethal combination and the team playing some superb football. In the home game against Haringey, Merstham were 5-0 up at the interval. However, other clubs had taken note and Ufuah departed for the Welsh Premiership and Henry to Carshalton. Without their front two, the Moatsiders struggled to score goals and combined with a horrendous run of injuries that reduced the squad to the bare bones, Merstham began to slide down the table. The team lost their final 13 league games and relegation was confirmed on the final day of the season. Manager Frank Wilson departed, and he was replaced for the 2022/23 season by former Carshalton boss and ex-Merstham midfielder Peter Adeniyi. Merstham were one of the favourites for promotion from the Isthmian South Central. However, Adeniyi’s young, new team failed to fire and after ten games the team were bottom of the table and remained there for much of the season. A bad habit of drawing games that they should have won didn’t help and the team eventually ended up with 17 draws from 38 games. That combined with a quite appalling record from the penalty spot meant that all too often the side managed to snatch defeat (or a draw) from the jaws of victory, a prime example was away to Southall when the

12

www.egtfc.co.uk

Moatsiders were 3-1 up in added time but ended up drawing 3-3! The team seemed to have turned a corner around the New Year and had a number of good results, including an unbeaten run of six games, but only one of those was a win. As the season drew to a close, Merstham had their fate in their own hands with games against others around them in the relegation zone. But a damaging defeat at Sutton Common Rovers and a disappointing home draw with Bedfont Sports followed by a 6-0 thumping at Walton & Hersham put them in deep trouble near the bottom. A fighting performance and 90th minute winner at Chertsey meant it was all to play for in the final league game of the season at home to Westfield. After 45 minutes the Moatsiders were 2-0 down and staring relegation in the face. However, a stirring second half display earned them a point with a 2-2 draw, but they could have won it. It condemned Merstham to a relegation play off against an in-form Egham Town. In front of over 650 spectators, Merstham conceded first and were lucky not to be two down. But on the stroke of half-time, Aaron Goode powered home a header to make it 1-1. After the break it was all Merstham, and two goals guaranteed the Moatsiders survival. In the summer, they switched to the South East division.
