WELCOME TO EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN

A warm welcome to East Court and to our visitors from South-East London.

This has been shaping up to be one of the pivotal games in the season for a few weeks now, and while it's not quite 'must win' for us, with another six to play after today, it's probably 'must not lose' for sure.

Looking at the table, the sides between 8th and 15th probably haven't got too much to play for now.

Unfortunately for us our run-in only includes a couple of games against sides in that bracket. We could certainly do with a few players back after injury in time for the run-in so it was good to see Tom Cadman back on Saturday and the prospect of Glenn Wilson and Bobby Dunn returning today.

COME ON THE WASPS!

MANAGER’S NOTES

Welcome everyone to today’s home game against Erith and Belvedere. A win today is much needed after going three games now without a point and conceding 11 goals in the process. The stats don’t lie but take away the performance at home to Burgess Hill and I think we have been on the wrong end of some really tough results after playing some good football and, as ever, being punished at the wrong end for any mistakes.

Saturday’s game away at Herne Bay was more of the same. I think during the first 35 minutes of this game we played without doubt some of the best football this season, we completely dominated a good Herne Bay side for nearly 40 minutes and looked a threat every time we went forward.

But as has been the case all season we give them a goal just before the break and then somehow we went from having comfortable possession in their corner to giving them a goal kick which they took quickly and somehow we went in at the break behind!

We then conceded again to make it 1-3 but, to be fair to the lads, I made a few changes and we got ourselves back to 32 and controlled the last 20-25 minutes but just couldn’t find an equaliser.

Positives from the game were a full debut from Adam Lonsdale and the longawaited return of Tom Cadman, which was great to see ahead of today’s game. We hope to have Glenn Wilson back as well this afternoon along with Bobby Dunn. Their experience will make such a difference.

More than ever we need the support from

you all for what is now a really important run. With five of our last seven games here at East Court everyone needs to get behind the players so we can have a successful run-in and climb the table.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Happy Easter everyone and welcome to East Court for this afternoon’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Erith & Belvedere.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the Deres’ players, management, officials and supporters as well as this afternoon’s referee Marcin Indyk and his assistants Matthew Dyson and Mark Fitzpatrick. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.

Billy Hamlin and Jamie Phipps took over the reins at the Deres from Matt Longhurst in January since when they have won two, drawn three and lost seven. They are currently second from bottom with 21 points from 32 games, two points above Beckenham Town and seven points behind Phoenix Sports. Wasps are one place above Phoenix on the same points but with a game in hand over the bottom three.

Drew Cooney’s Wasps have recently slipped to 17th place with 28 points from 31 matches. It was a bitter disappointment coming away from Herne Bay on Easter Saturday not even with a draw when we were by far the better side and deserved to win the match. We totally bossed the first half and took the lead through Kiye Martin. Henry Sinai was then brought down in the box and much to everyone’s astonishment, including the opposition, the referee gave nothing! We went close to scoring on a number of occasions and with the home side not having had an attempt on goal, we led on 45 minutes. Then we had a mad six minutes in added time and conceded twice.

We still did enough in the second half but Herne Bay scored a third and when sub Tom Cadman hit a thunderbolt shot to make it 3-2, there was hope and belief to at least clinch a draw but it just wasn’t meant to be.

This afternoon’s match is a must-win for both

sides. It was good to see Tom Cadman play 20 minutes on Saturday after being out injured for 10 weeks. Michael Wilson played 90 minutes for the first time in six weeks, while Glenn Wilson was still missing after playing just one match since the end of January with a recurring injury. We could do with all three back for this afternoon’s match as well as Bobby Dunn who was injured in the only game he has played in since re-joining Wasps at the beginning of March.

We travel to Lancing on Saturday and then host second placed Ramsgate the following Tuesday (7.30pm ko) before the visit of the current bottom club, Beckenham Town here the following Saturday.

Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.

Enjoy the match

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST

As we enter April let's look at games played in the past on either the last day of March or the first day of April. We'll start with East Grinstead v Steyning on Saturday 31 March 2007 in division two of the Sussex County League. A strong feature of the programme is that we had had a bad March – not surprisingly the club notes, Chairman Richard Tramontin's notes and team manager Steve Norris's notes all talk about it.

And we even had a stand-alone page headed “A month to forget” talking about all those March games. We'd started the month with an away 2-2 draw at the then league leaders from Midhurst (after being 2-0 up). Then a 2-1 defeat down at Peacehaven with Ben Burns scoring. And then we forgot how to score goals with four defeats without our scoring a goal. Adding to the misery the only goal in one of those defeats was scored by someone who used to play for us - Barry Leete. And we tried to bring him back to the club but he chose to move to St Francis Rangers, who were quite a bit above us in the league.

Richard Tramontin's notes do spend a little more time talking about a number of the changes we needed to make to improve our facilities and perhaps more significantly where the money was going to come from to make the changes.

The programme's league table shows us in tenth place in the 18 team division, one place above our visitors from Steyning. We had played them down in Steyning at the end of October and had come home with a point in a 1-1 draw – our goal from Ben Burns. But sorry I don't know the March 31 match went in 2007.

If you know then please tell me.

Next up we have an away match in division one of the County League Crowborough Athletic v East Grinstead on Monday 1 April 2013 with a nice early 11.00 am kick-off, it being Easter Monday. The programme uses lots of bright colour throughout, but there isn't much to read.

The club's notes welcome us and reminds us that Crowborough had visited us just after

Christmas and “to lose 7-0 is never nice especially when it is against the side we consider to be our local rivals”. We probably had different views about the niceness! (Our seven goals had come from Ben Chick with a couple, Sam Schaaf, Marc Pelling, Michael Belli, Sam Cane and a Crowborough own goal. These seven goals came in the middle of a golden run of games, surrounded by us having 6-2 and 4-1 wins.)

The notes go on to a lengthy description of Crowborough's previous game, away to Lancing. Sounds like it was an eventful match. Crowborough scored first, then early in the second half a Crowborough player missed a penalty but a couple of minutes later scored to make it 2-0. Lancing soon pulled a goal back and they then copied Crowborough with their own penalty miss. Ten minutes to go and Lancing equalised. And a few seconds to go Lancing scored again and stole the points. Let's get back to the Easter Monday game. The league table shows us in eighth place with Crowborough another eight places below us. We won 3-0 with Mark Zydonik, Dave Gellatly and Sam Schaaf scoring - Lester Medcalf

CLUB NOTICE

Supporter Behaviour

In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match.

Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.

Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.

Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA.

We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead.

As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

ERITH & BELVEDERE

Erith and Belvedere FC celebrated its centenary season in 2023 in grand style, winning the Southern Counties East league (SCEFL). Unusually the title campaign featured three managers (two of them ex-Wasps bosses): Tony Beckingham who resigned in December, Andy Constable who left in March, and Matt Longhurst who completed the job.

The Deres were formed in 1922 on the restructuring of Belvedere and District FC, founded in 1918. They reached the FA Amateur Cup quarter-final, and in 1923-24 they reached the Final, losing 3-0 to Clapton at The Den in front of the day’s biggest football crowd. In the same season they won the Kent Amateur Cup, and in 1924-25 lost 2-0 at home to Third Division Reading in the FA Cup.

Apart from two seasons (1929-31) in the London League, the Deres remained in the Kent League until the war. In a league featuring many semi-professional and nursery sides, third place in 1928-29 was their highest finish, but greater success came in cups. They reached successive Kent Amateur Cup Finals in 1934/35. The FA Amateur Cup Final was reached again in 1938 and although they lost 1-0 to Bromley, again at The Den, the 33,346 crowd was the biggest ever for a Deres match. In 1941-42 they won the Kent Senior Cup (the first amateurs to do so for 30 years) and the South East Combination League and Cup double. They dropped only one point, scored 253 goals in 44 games and had a 64-game unbeaten home run ended only by an Army side fielding four full internationals.

In the late 60s the Deres won the Kent Amateur Cup four times. They reached the Athenian premier division in 1971 managed by 1959 FA Cup Final goalscorer Roy Dwight and won the League Cup in 1974. Deres chose to return to the Kent League in 1978, but in 1982 entered the Southern League as Kent champions and League Cup finalists, the highlight of Peter Peters’ record 18 years in charge between 1971 and 1991. Life was hard for the Deres in the Southern League, with just six top-half finishes and a best placing of 7th under Harry Richardson in 1993.

Back in the Kent League in 2005, the Deres were in promotion contention until the final day of 2005-06 but were out of the hunt in the following few seasons, apart from a Kent Senior Trophy final defeat to VCD in 2009. Micky Collins took over as manager in May 2010 and won the Kent League double in 2012-13, edging VCD Athletic in an epic title race and beating Corinthian in the League Cup final.

Collins resigned soon afterwards and 2013-14 was a debut Isthmian season to forget: a 16game losing streak, 137 goals against and relegation confirmed with four games to go. New manager Matt Longhurst took the club to third in the SCEFL and the FA Vase quarterfinal (losing to the eventual winners North Shields) in 2015 with 41 goals for Alfie May (now at Charlton). Longhurst departed in autumn 2015, beginning a decline which saw the Deres relegated in 2017. They came back two years later as runners-up in the SCEFL second tier under Owen Jones, winning the London Senior Trophy and with Harry Harding scoring a club record 45 goals in the season. The 2020s began with a turbulent period when the Deres lost a manager, most of the first team and all but two directors. Del Oldfield steadied the ship in the two Covid seasons, before Danny Murphy took Deres to sixth in 2022.
