Written for the 95th Re-Union for Makarau Hall. Nov 3rd & 4th 2001 Les Adams i James and Hannah Adams left England to settle in New Zealand, landing at Howick about 1875. They set off by foot to Punganui (between Helensville and Kaukapakapa where they built a home on a ten acre block on the corner of inland Road. James had a boat the “Tam O Shanter and sailed on the Kaipara Harbour.

They had seven children. Thomas John (Jack) being the youngest. Jack used to pack groceries from Drinnan’s store at Kaukapakapa and deliver by horse to outlying people, bringing back Kauri gum to the store.

On July 1st 1914, he married Rhoda King of Wainui and went to live in Te Aroha where he worked as an engineer for the railways, laying new lines in the area.

Rhoda disliked living there as they were living in one room in a boarding house and she found it boring sitting in the room all day. The boarding house was in church street and today is the Mahena Restaurant.

In 1915, they moved to Makarau and bought a block of land from Teddy McKay on Haruru Road (formerly Makarau-Wainui Road). The timber for the house came by train from Auckland and was carted from the Makarau Railway Station by horse and cart.

The house was built by Rhoda’s father J.S King. They had six boys: Bill, Alf, Herbert, Harold, Les and Ralph.

Some Sundays the family walked through the ti-tree up past Flat Top to the grand-parents’ place at Wainui. The boys often climbed to the top of Flat Top where they could see the view of the Kaipara on one side and the East Coast on the other.

Les is still on the original farm, which his father broke in by hand, while still working on the railway and at King’s Quarry. . ; The cows were milked by hand, the milk carried up to a little shed and separated with a hand separator. The cream was taken to the railway where it was sent to the Dairy Company. Empty cans were brought back.

The roads were all clay but later on some metal was worked out of the hill over the creek on Dunn’s farm. It was dug out by hand and put on the roads.

In the Depression the public Work’s camp was opposite the Adam’s Homestead with a lot of people living there.

Bullock teams carted the logs to the river to be sent down to the “booms” at the Makarau River. Some of their bullock pens and log bridges have rotted away. Some stumps would have been up to six feet across.

The older Adams boys went to Makarau school three days a week. Later when the younger ones went it was for five days a week. They rode horses and bikes to get there . Les started with a little pony and then got a bike. He left school at age 13 and worked at home for a while Cutting scrub and ploughing up the paddocks, putting in crops and new grass.

Later he worked around the district then came home to help on the farm in harvesting time he would help around the district, getting in the hay.

In 1946, he bought Dodge Tip Truck and used it to cart manure and metal to different parts around the district.

Jack died in 1949 and Les took over the farm. Extra land was purchased from Rex Dunn and later in partnership with Ralph they bought more land from Percy Glanville. A new cowshed was built further up the road and the cream truck driven by Jack Rauner used to collect the cream at the farm gate.

In 1949, Les purchased a Fordson Major Tractor to replace the horses and did all sorts of contracting jobs: From here he upgraded to a rubber tired 28 Ferguson using it for mowing and hay~making leaving the Fordson for heavier work.

He helped the Hooper boys cross cut saw by hand, the timber for the house they built on Paul Straka’s place.

On a Sunday afternoon they used to go down to the Makarau River netting for fish.

For extra cash Les used to work at the sale yards and did droving around the district.

Many changes have been made around the area with improvements to the road Including tar seal.

Today the school bus goes past the gate and the tanker calls to collect the milk.

Keith Kemp From Kaukapakapa Through the Children's eyes 1917-1982 (Kaukapakapa 125th Jubilee ) Keith Kemp (sometimes known as Hawes as his mother, a widow, married Mr Hawes) lived in Stoney Creek Road on a farm with his parents and siblings, Betty and Ron. He attended Kaukapakapa School from April 1928 to Dec 1931. He rode a horse to and from school As did Mary Dormer with two pillion passengers, and Heather Shanks. There was no school bus, except for Kanohi pupils, he remembers.

His best friends were Brian McConnell, Ted Dearlove, Bob Taylor, Des Downer, And Cliff Shanks - the only one still with us, says Keith.

He remembers swimming in the hole in the creek in the paddock behind H. Dye's house, playing rugby and cricket and going to the Winter Show on the Kings or Queens Wharf each winter. It cost one shilling (ten cents) on the train.

Kaukapakapa Railway was one of the busy stations on the North line, with 18-20 trains a day, and it was the rail head for Silverdale, Whangaparoa etc. All the material and equipment for the fort at the Army Bay Reserve during the war came via Kaukapakapa," says Keith proudly.

Keith moved to Kaukapakapa from Woodhill in April 1928. He was in Std 3 - Mr. Ernie Shanks was head teacher and still was when he left school in 1931. “Mr. Shanks was strict but fair. He taught us things I have not forgotten, such as pruning, budding, layering fruit trees etc, Keith says. One of my duties the last two years was doing a weather report before class each day. I would take temperature, barometer, rainfall, if any, wind direction, cloud formation etc," he continues.

In winter they had heating stoves in both rooms and cocoa which Mrs Shanks would make at the school house.

Two senior boys would carry it back to the shelter sheds for distribution.

Standard five and six went to Helensville by train every second week. The boys went to woodwork, the girls to cooking.

“We used to walk up from the station and call into Pengelly's shop for a pie just out of the oven. Cost three pence each.

Keith also used to ride his horse to Helensville dentist ‘Butcher’ Wilson for fillings. A visiting nurse came to the school once or twice a year to inspect children s teeth and general health.

For Proficiency Exams they also went to Helensville. Inspectors called about once a year.

During Keith's first year at school Standard three was all boys - Mervin Mumford, Robin Turchie, Brian McConnell, Des Downer, Ted Dearlove and himself.

Standard Four was Patsy Smith, Joan Rapson, Betty Lee and Dave Manson.

Standard Five was all girls - Sylvia Mumford, Ruth Summerville, Val Jones, Eva Stewart, Roma Downer and Kath Gallagher.

Standard Six was Roy Turchie, Lance Merton, Colin Osbaldiston, Dick Gallagher and Barbara Taylor.

During Keith's last school years, he missed very little school and the last two years he got a Good Attendance Certificate.

School holidays were spent on the farm and Keith remembers one school concert around 1930 that a Miss Williams, the Infant teacher got together.

We could expect two or three floods each winter when the high tide and water from the hills met at the same time. They only lasted until the tide went out, he remembers. The main Hall floor was uneven from flood damage. In 1929, the stage was enlarged, and a new Oregon floor for indoor bowls, was laid at a higher level.

A local farmer was a builder and did the job.

Keith has many good memories of the Foresters’ Lodge held in the Hall, both as a youngster and as an adult.

The Friday night dances in winter, were a W.D.F.U. effort, Mary Earle was at the piano and the dance cost only two shillings and sixpence which included supper.

Keith also attended the Methodist Sunday School and Church. A Miss Sinclair was organist for many years.

Along the road was Church of England which is now a house. The Catholic priest from Helensville held services in the Hall. The Presbyterian Church I hope, is still there!" he says.

On Saturdays the Library in the School grounds would be open with somebody always on duty.

A new Post Office was built by Mr Bob Skeats of Helensville and was opened in June 1940 with Charles Earle as Postmaster. Keith remembers the old one and he watched the new one being built.

His first memories of Kaukapakapa in 1928 were of the Dyes’ Store which was between the old slaughterhouse and the river. It had its own slipway for the boat to come right into the building for unloading. In the earlier times they used to bring goods up the river from Helensville.

The building had accommodation upstairs and alongside where Mr and Mrs Harry Dye lived. Mr and Mrs Percy Dye lived in a house by the school. " When the new store opened in 1929 the house part which Mr. and Mrs. H. Dye lived in was shifted by Harry Manuel of Makarau with his team of bullocks. It was pulled across the road and down the paddock opposite the school. Then it was added onto. Mr George Dye was older brother to Harry and Percy. He lived up the road just past the Hotel, this side of the Presbyterian Church.

The store had a large range of goods - grocery, meat, clothing, hardware, manure and bread delivered every day by 7.50 am. from Auckland. There was a staff of fourteen or fifteen.

This store was burnt to the ground in February 1943 and we managed in temporary premises until new buildings were up.

Dye's old store down by the river also had a butchery. There was also a butchery and store on the old road between the Methodist Church and Church of England. Bob Drinnan was the butcher, "that was before my time," says Keith.

Mr Greenall senior ran the grocery store until 1935 or 1936.

“I started at Dyes‘ new butchery 15 February 1935 at two shillings and sixpence per day, four days a week.

Doug Bailey was the butcher in charge.

In 1938 Keith came back to Kaukapakapa to relieve while the butchers (Doug Bailey, Dave Miller, Peter Dormer, and possibly Neil Smith) had their holidays. "However, I stayed on until I left Kaukapakapa in 1954 Keith spent the war years in Kaukapakapa and felt that people in country districts didn't seem to be affected as much as city folk. “Food supplies, petrol rationing, meat rationing etc were fairly good really," he says.

Keith attended the 75th Kaukapakapa School Reunion but has no long lasting memories of it.

History:Charlie RIX ( Father of George) resided in Beckles, England, and married Annie BULLINGHAM, who resided at Gorleston, Yarmouth. (These details may have come from a marriage certificate). They had two children: George (b 1904) and Gladys Kathleen (b 1907). George and Gladys were born Gorleston, Great Yarmouth Norfolk.. Charlie RIX died Feb 1910 in Great Yarmouth.

Annie then married William Henry BURRELL a motor boat driver. They had 3 children together: William Ronald (Ron) (b 26 Jun 1911), Joyce and Alfred. William Henry BURRELL was born in Gorleston, Yarmouth, The BURRELL family lived there in 1911 at 31 Baker st.

The whole family, including Annie's children George and Gladys from her first marriage, migrated from England to New Zealand in 1923 on the "Athenian".

George and Gladys evidently kept their father's last name. George married Alma (UNKNOWN) in NZ, and they had a daughter named Barbara RIX. William Ronald (Ron) BURRELL (George RIX's stepbrother) married into the HALL family of Birkenhead, Auckland. He married Margery Jean HALL (m 20 Apr 1935 at Birkenhead).

George RIX played tennis at the Hall family home, and was best man at Margery and Ron's wedding. He was a successful farmer in the Kaukapakapa area, was a Justice of the Peace, and much respected. Their daughter Barbara and her husband now farm the same property.

For many many families who lived in the country areas the school bus was an ‘expected service’ that expanded as the communities grew.

The following memories are directed as a tribute to not only our ‘School Bus Driver’, George Rix but also to his lovely wife and daughter. George Rix was a dairy farmer, fire wood merchant , taxi driver and a school bus driver. He was a community fixture.

During our childhood, George or ‘Mr Rix’, was either taking us to school on the bus, collecting firewood that our father had cut out as part of ‘breaking in the family farm‘, or driving his stock to and from the runoff he bought that boundaried our parents‘ farm on the Kanohi/Makarau road. Actually a number of times the cows got into our place and it was rather trying getting them back on the road again.

The buses themselves were generally the Reo make. Sturdy, wooden framed but adequate enough to make the morning and afternoon delivery of us school kids to and from the Kaukapakapa primary School.

It must be appreciated that the roads were metal and suffered from potholes, and corrugations and in parts, no metal existed at all. Considerable reconstruction and straightening of those roads has been completed now and therefore tends to hide the difficulties and tenseness of driving the school bus in the 50’s.

There were times when Reo would not start after serious attempts and probably a tongue lashing. And so the treat was ride to school on the back of George's blue Bedford truck.

If the weather was fine then only the front side full height rails would be fitted — the air conditioning was great. However, should rain be expected then in addition to the rails, a tarpaulin was stretched across the top.

Seating was generally on the tray of the truck. You could of course crouch or stand. It was always our wish that it rained when the truck was used.

We could collect a huge pool of water in the middle of the tarpaulin and then at the appropriate moment and or selected place, the big kids could push the cover skyward and this great pool of water would splash onto the road behind us.

The small kids were always seated in the cab, like sardines, up or next to the cab if they had to ride on the back.

They call it ‘peer pressure’ today, in our day it was the right place for the small kids. They would get their turn sitting at the rear at sometime in the future, and of course they had to learn the ‘tricks of the trade’.

There were of course, times when no transport arrived, but around the corner came a group of kids walking to school. We knew that although late, the school bus would catch us up at sometime.

George's reliability was a trademark.

Proof is supported by probably the only ‘on time performance study’ ever completed. For four weeks we recorded the time the school bus arrived at our gate to pick us up. We ourselves were amazed that during that period of time of the trial, the bus always arrived between 8.05 am and 8.15 am every school morning.

Although George was a close associate, trader and farmer to our parents, it did not stop him from completing a very surprising and at time funny situation. My brother Ray and I had been in a bit of a playful mood one day on a trip home from school. Yes, a bit loud, but did not temper the situation even when cautioned. The last stop before our farm was Cory’s Road, about a mile from home, where the Webber twins got off the bus.

Imagine our surprise when George ordered us two off the bus as well. We laughed as we waved the bus goodbye and joked about the hero status as we walked home. A couple of whops with the ironing cord very quickly turned the situation to ‘do not get put off the bus again’. As far as I know we were the only kids put off the bus — a proud record.

Accidents - well as far as I know we only had one — on the very first sharp right hand bend up the Kanohi Hill.

Today the corner is much much straighter than the day of the accident.

As usual we had crossed the railway line at McLean's crossing and were rapidly increasing speed to get as far as possible up the winding hill before gear changing commenced. The bus in, second gear, crawled into the corner when wham — Weaver's taxi had also arrived at the same time. The bus veered left and stopped resting on its chassis with the front wheels suspended in the air. The car slid to the right and came to rest on the inside bank of the corner.

No one was hurt and there was no danger of the bus crashing down the side of the road. We kids had great delight in exiting the bus via the emergency door and inspecting both the damaged bus and car. George made sure that all the kids got homeWhilst the Reos seemed to be reliable, there were times when tender loving care or special actions were necessary.

Like first gear selection had failed which made it difficult to stop and start off on our hill. George would slow the bus right down, open the exit door and we would jump out. Exciting for us — our mother was not that impressed.

- The selection of second gear was like a massage - out of first gear, onto neutral, one caress of the gear lever to the right, back to the left, to the right and then back and straight into the second. Timing was of the essence.

Any misjudgement could result in a jammed gear box.

One afternoon George had stopped outside the McLeods's Garage and went in to do some business. Now my brother Tom and Chris Roskilly (remember him’) decided that the would try the gear changing routine.

All they did was successfully change the gear box. George was not a happy chappy.

Albert was the 5th child and 3rd son of William Stevens (Plot 134 ) and Mary Ann nee Bayley (Plot 133 ) The Stevens family originated in Penzance, Cornwell.

Following is a short paragraph of Albert's life taken from a history of the family written in 1972 by Thomas Stevens, his brother. " Albert received his portion of the farm and married Dorothy Bartlett. He became prominent as a breeder of pedigree Ayrshire dairy cattle. He became a director of the Kaipara Co-operative Dairy Co. Ltd in 1959 and served with distinction until his death in 1966. He was so keen on farming that at one stage he and Dorothy between them owned and managed no less than six farms at the same time, mostly dairying. Their son Victor is dairy farming in the Helensville area in a big way on a farm which he has developed himself, and is milking 600 cows: one of the largest dairy herds in the country."

As a side note. Three of his brothers ( William, Thomas and Arthur ) all held office as Justices of the Peace simultaneously, which in the 1970's was considered to be very interesting.

In the 1950 Wises Post Office Directory he is listed as Farmer STEVENS Victor Laurence (Vic). On 24 November 2010 at Te Puke. Dearly loved only son of Albert (Bert) and Dorothy Stevens (both deceased), loved brother of Gladys and the late Albert Taylor late of Kumeu, Elba and the late Ian Hellyer of Kaukapakapa and Valerie and Henry Driver of Kerikeri, Olive and John Shanks of Whangari, much loved uncle of his nieces and nephews. His contribution to the community will be remembered with respect.
