Welcome Welcome

The BRSCC thrived across a variety of fronts in 2021, with plenty of highlights, says Club chairman Peter Daly.

Hello fellow Club members, and welcome to the latest edition of the British Racing & Sports Car Club’s annual yearbook covering the 2021 season!

While the last 12 months weren’t an entirely complete return to normality by any stretch, thankfully they were a lot less disruptive than that of the 2020 season, when we’d all been forced to stay at home until July. Race events that had been planned for March and April did have to be cancelled due to ongoing restrictions, but once racing got underway in May it was back to the usual amazing on track action that the BRSCC always strives to deliver.

As they had shown the previous year, our drivers and teams proved that the appetite for club racing was still very high with excellent registration and entry numbers across the board for our championships and series.

Some of our best and brightest provided grid numbers that hit new levels while others were as reliable as ever, such as our Mazda MX-5 championships, the quintet of Caterham Motorsport series, the new CityCar Cup Championship, the Clubsport Trophy, Formula Fords, BMW Compact Cup, and plenty of strong numbers in Ford Fiestas, both in our senior Fiesta and Fiesta Junior championships and the brilliant ST-XR Challenge. A big thank you must go to all of our competitors and teams for your support, as without you we wouldn’t have as successful a formulae roster as we do.

We were also proud to showcase the very best that Formula Ford had to offer with a magnificent weekend of festivities and racing action at the 50th Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch in October, which brought back past champions and provided a thrilling final in which Jamie Sharp captured the Neil Shanahan Trophy, while Matt Rivett became the first recipient of the Brian Jones Memorial Trophy for winning the Historic Final, a magnificent accolade fitting of the great man himself. The Festival itself was deemed to be such a success that it won Motorsport News’ Event of the Year award for 2021, and it’s thanks to the effort of our amazing team of HQ staff and associated volunteers and team members that this was possible.

Another proud occasion for the BRSCC was our opportunity to organise and run the popular Race of Remembrance for the very first time. A special charity event containing a three-part endurance race at Anglesey and run over the weekend of Remembrance Sunday, it was a wonderful occasion that once again honoured the many who sacrificed so much for our generation today. It was a great privilege for everyone at the BRSCC to be chosen to work alongside Mission Motorsport to organise the event and our thanks go to them for entrusting it to us.

Alongside our magnificent HQ team who once again worked tirelessly to ensure the busy season ran as faultlessly as possible, I also have to give endless thanks to all of the volunteers, coordinators, officials and our magnificent marshals who all give up their

free time regularly to ensure that our race weekends can happen at all. Without their support and efforts, we genuinely couldn’t go racing or at least not as efficiently and professionally as we do. We know how challenging the past two years have been for us all, and if it wasn’t for your assistance, we wouldn’t have made it through the other side the way we did.

I will also say a big thank you to our sponsors and supporters including those who are doing so with this Yearbook. First off, our gratitude goes to our friends at runyourfleet for their support and the supply of the magnificent Jaguar safety car that the Club utilised at several of our race weekends during the year. Sadly, it wasn’t a year without losing close friends and colleagues of the club and from motorsport. 2021 was a year that saw us lose some those that were associated with the BRSCC for many years and it was heartbreaking to see them leave us. Right at the turn of the new year, we learned of the passing of the Voice of Brands Hatch, Brian Jones, fellow commentator Murray Walker OBE in March, much respected former race director Dave Pierre in June, the experienced marshal Robert Foote in a tragic accident at Brands Hatch in July, former BRSCC chairman Bernard Cottrell in August and just before this Yearbook was completed, we also sadly learned of the passing of respected chief scrutineer Jon Crook. All played big roles in the landscape of our sport and going forwards without them is tough, but we will never forget them. Our thoughts and condolences to the friends, families and colleagues of those we lost.

I hope that all in all this Yearbook once again provides another brilliant insight in to the action packed season that was, so enjoy the following pages and I’ll no doubt see you trackside somewhere in 2022. Enjoy!

GT4: Burns and Burton Dominate

GT3: Another Classic Season Leo Machitski and Dennis Lind emerged victorious in a five-way GT3 battle for 2021’s Intelligent Money British GT Championship with Barwell Motorsport and Lamborghini. The Russian/Danish duo also became the first crew from outside of the UK to win the overall title after they pipped Ian Loggie and Yelmer Buurman (RAM Racing Mercedes-AMG) in a typically dramatic Donington Decider.

Michael Igoe/Phil Keen, Adam Balon/Sandy Mitchell and Andrew Howard also headed to the season finale in mathematical contention but fell short thanks to Machitski and Lind’s fourth place finish, arguably their least impressive performance of an otherwise highly accomplished campaign.

Indeed, their Huracan finished lower than fourth just once during a supremely consistent season featuring one win, at SpaFrancorchamps, and four more podiums. Lind also underlined his pace by claiming six of seven Sunoco Fastest Lap Awards.

However, July’s DNF at Donington, in which Machitski was powerless to avoid Igoe’s stranded Lamborghini, allowed Loggie and Buurman to maintain the pressure until October’s finale. In fact, RAM Racing’s Mercedes-AMG was even more consistent. It scored points in all nine races, including the maximum at Snetterton, before coming within one position and just two seconds of snatching the drivers’ crown in dramatic fashion. Instead, the #6 crew had to settle for Pro-Am honours and second overall.

Rewind five months and it would have been difficult to look beyond Igoe and Keen who dominated the season opener at Brands Hatch. They were the only line-up to win twice but were also beset by a mystery handling issue and the first corner shunt at Donington

that stymied WPI’s challenge over the first half of the campaign.

They ended up fourth, one place behind reigning champion Sandy Mitchell and perennial title challenger Adam Balon who fought their way back into contention after being punted off at Brands. Second at Silverstone, by virtue of Mitchell’s eye-catching pass on team-mate Lind, yielded maximum points thanks to the race-by-race entry ahead, but it was Barwell’s other Lambo that ultimately won the war.

Andrew Howard was the only driver in the final top-five not to win a race but remained a contender until the last thanks to sheer consistency. Pole position and second place at Brands Hatch alongside Jonny Adam hinted at what might be to come, but Beechdean AMR’s assault tailed off somewhat after the latter was forced to skip Spa while self-isolating.

Elsewhere, Balfe Motorsport’s Stewart and Lewis Proctor prevailed in Silver-Am’s father/ son championship battle. But it was their class rivals, Richard and Sam Neary, who netted theirs and Abba Racing’s first outright victory thanks to an incredible recovery drive at Donington in July.

Enduro Motorsport rounded out its first British GT campaign with a narrow victory at Donington, which denied RAM the title. Expect Morgan Tillbrook and Marcus Clutton to be a consistent podium threat in 2022.

Unusually, guest entries won the other three races. 2Seas Motorsport’s Hunter Abbott and Martin Kodric triumphed at the blue riband, three-hour Silverstone 500; TF Sport prevailed on its one-off outing at Snetterton with Ahmad Al Harthy and Charlie Eastwood; and Kevin Tse and Tom Onslow-Cole took one of Oulton Park’s two victories for RAM. Barwell retained the teams’ title.

Statistically, Will Burns and Gus Burton’s season wasn’t the most dominant in British GT4 history. That accolade remains with Jody Fannin and Warren Hughes.

Nevertheless, Century’s leading crew were in a league of their own for much of 2021, as their winning margin of 96.5 points attests.

Yes, victory on the opening weekend came courtesy of Assetto’s bad luck, but two more wins, another four podiums and never failing to finish outside of the top-five helped Burns and Burton achieve what no other crew had done since 2015: sealing the title before the final round.

BMW’s updated M4 and a Century squad returning to the sort of form that helped it also double up in 2018 played their parts. But its Silver crew, who came together as Ginetta Supercup champion and runner-up, more than justified their billing as pre-season favourites.

They were also aided by a supporting cast without a consistent title rival.

Indeed, Academy’s Will Moore and Matt Cowley only emerged as credible contenders at Oulton and added a second victory on the final weekend to finish runners-up despite suffering three DNFs. That 77.5 of their points were scored in the final four races says everything about this unusual campaign!

James Kell and Jordan Collard were unlucky on several occasions and scored their only win of the season at Snetterton, ironically in a spare car after their regular Team Rocket RJN McLaren was withdrawn before the race at Spa with significant damage suffered in testing.

They were just a point ahead of Pro-Am champions Matt Topham and Darren Turner who missed Brands before winning on debut together with Newbridge at Silverstone. They were also on the top step at Oulton but missed out on second place in the overall standings by just six points after also failing to score on three occasions.

Fifth were Chris Salkeld and Andrew Gordon-Colebrooke who moved from Pro-Am to Silver Cup mid-season. They failed to win a race outright but played a significant role in Century’s teams’ title success.

Also victorious was Balfe’s Jack Brown and Ashley Marshall, their performance at Spa being one of the standout moments of the campaign.

However, several others could and probably should have visited Victory Lane.

Assetto’s Mark Sansom and Charlie Robertson were set for victory at Brands before a puncture ended their hopes with five minutes remaining. The new-for-2021 Ginetta G56 remained a Pro-Am class threat thereafter but didn’t come close to repeating its opening weekend heroics.

Scott McKenna and latterly Jamie Caroline also frequently highlighted Toyota Gazoo Racing UK’s pace but ended the year with just two podiums and, in McKenna’s case, the Sunoco Fastest Driver Award.

Jamie Champ-wick Jamie Chadwick demonstrated her class by making it two W Series titles from two.

Following a hugely successful inaugural campaign in 2019 and the COVID-19enforced postponement of season two, W Series’ 2021 season was eagerly anticipated. Pre-season announcements of new drivers, sponsors, a teams-based structure, and a landmark partnership with Formula 1 increased the excitement levels.

Austria’s Styrian mountains provided a dramatic backdrop as W Series returned to the track. W Series had not raced since the dramatic conclusion to the inaugural season at Brands Hatch in August 2019 in which Jamie Chadwick was crowned the maiden champion.

Alice Powell took full advantage of her pole position, leading all the way from lights out to the chequered flag – and recording the fastest lap along the way – to complete a clean sweep in Austria and make it back-to-back W Series victories. Sarah Moore finished second to become the first openly LGBTQ+ driver to stand on the podium at a Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend, while Liechtenstein’s Fabienne Wohlwend took advantage of a flurry of late incidents to complete the podium despite starting ninth.

Having limited the damage a week earlier, Jamie Chadwick carried her momentum into round two at the same circuit by topping both the practice and qualifying sessions. Jamie edged out her 2019 title rival Beitske Visser by a tenth of a second in qualifying to secure the fourth pole position of her W Series career.

Jamie went on to match Alice’s feat in Austria, topping every session, leading every lap and setting the fastest lap of the race, to complete a perfect weekend and seal her third W Series race victory more than two years after her last at Misano in June 2019. Jamie took advantage of Beitske stalling from second on the grid to beat W Series rookie Irina Sidorkova – who claimed her maiden podium finish– by six seconds as Emma Kimiläinen completed the podium.

Jamie C Powell produced a stunning lap at the end of a fiercely contested qualifying session to take pole position at Silverstone. Alice beat Fabienne by almost four-tenths of a second to claim her second pole position of the season. A dramatic W Series race kept the 100,000-strong crowd on the edges of their seats. Powell lost the lead on the opening lap, but recovered to pass Wohlwend in the closing stages and take her second victory of the season. Alice finished two seconds clear of Fabienne to regain the championship lead from Chadwick.

W Series’ topsy-turvy title tussle continued as Chadwick dominated Friday’s running at the Hungaroring to take pole position.

With overtaking notoriously difficult and tyre preservation crucial on a track surface of more than 50 degrees Celsius, the race’s opening exchanges were crucial. Jamie made a good start, leading all the way to the chequered flag to beat Alice by more than 10 seconds. Jamie’s second victory of the campaign let her match Alice’s tally of wins and took her one point clear of her compatriot as the season reached halfway.

Friday at Spa had a wet qualifying session and was overshadowed by a dramatic accident involving six cars, as Chadwick edged out Powell to take pole position by three quarters of a second. The race was rain-affected too, with the opening 13 minutes taking place behind the safety car, but the wheel-to-wheel action was worth the wait. The pole-sitter had won each of the first four races of the season, but Kimiläinen broke that run in spectacular style. The Finn started fourth on the grid but earned the second victory of her W Series career by passing Jamie and Alice to score a dominant victory. The win moved Emma into title contention, 31 points behind championship leader Jamie who finished second to extend her advantage over Alice – who finished fourth – to seven points at the top of the standings.

Beitske Visser returned to the W Series grid to much fanfare at Zandvoort. The Dutch seaside resort last hosted an F1 Grand Prix in 1985 and, on a warm and bright Friday, swathes of orange-clad fans packed the grandstands to cheer on Beitske at her home race. A bold overtake would give Powell her third victory of the season and a share of the lead in the W Series title race. Alice passed Kimiläinen in the early stages before beating Chadwick by three seconds.

With title contenders Alice and Jamie level on points and the top eight in the championship standings qualifying automatically for the 2022 season, it was all to play for as the drivers headed to Austin, Texas, for W Series’ season-ending double-header, its first races outside of Europe and first race on an F1 Grand Prix Sunday in support of the United States Grand Prix. Jamie would start both races from the front row. Abbi Pulling set the fastest time in qualifying to edge out Jamie by seven one-hundredths of a second and earn the first pole position of her W Series career in just her third race weekend with the series. Chadwick moved a step closer towards retaining her W Series title by winning her third race of the 2021 season on Saturday afternoon. Jamie overtook pole-sitter Abbi at the opening corner and led all the way to the chequered flag to take the fifth victory of her W Series career.

Chadwick took her second consecutive race victory and became a two-time W Series champion. The 23-year-old Briton completed a perfect weekend by leading from lights out to the chequered flag and recording the fastest lap in Sunday’s race. Jamie beat Abbi by five seconds to claim her fourth victory of the season, successfully defend the title she won in 2019 and scoop the $500,000 top prize and maximum 15 FIA Super Licence points on offer. Alice finished sixth to end the season 27 points behind Jamie in the standings.

The title race went down to the wire, but it was JHR Developments’ Matthew Rees who stood firm to claim the 2021 F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered

by Ford EcoBoost crown.

In one of the closest championship battles in the series’ seven-year history to-date, 10 drivers visited the winner’s circle, with every single driver in the field also claiming a podium finish across the ten-event, 30-race calendar.

It proved to be a fitting conclusion to nearly six decades of Ford-powered junior singleseater racing in the United Kingdom, as the curtain came down on the first-generation of the FIA’s Formula 4 concept.

In typically dramatic fashion, a wet-dry opening round at Thruxton set the tone for a rollercoaster season; having seized the lead at the start, Abbi Pulling looked to be on course for a maiden victory before the slick-shod cars rose through the order as the race wore on.

From the fifth row on the grid, it was Fortec’s James Hedley who took the chequered flag first, and he would repeat his overtaking exploits during the first ever fully-reversed contest under clearer skies the following day.

The perfect weekend on home turf looked to have eluded Hedley after a four-car collision at the Club chicane in the finale left his car in the barriers, but the ensuing red flag, delay to restarting and downpour gave his Fortec team the opportunity to repair the car and take the restart.

From there, he was able to rise to third behind McKenzy Cresswell and first-time winner Joseph Loake and laid down an early marker as the one to beat amongst Ford’s rising stars.

It would be Rees, however, that took centre stage at Snetterton. Having claimed an emphatic double pole position on debut, the race results at Thruxton went against the Welsh racer. He was fastest once again in qualifying on Saturday, but this time everything went according to plan.

book-ending a maiden win on his first outing for Richardson Racing’s Georgi Dimitrov. The battle for the honours was already shaping up to be a classic.

Enter Matias Zagazeta. In a change to the usual format, the reverse grid race opened the action at Brands Hatch, with Arden’s Zak Taylor beating team-mate Thomas Ikin to victory.

Hedley led home Rees in another weatheraffected thriller, before Zagazeta’s maiden triumph propelled him back into the reckoning.

Mixed conditions in qualifying afforded Hedley the opportunity to gamble on wet tyres at Oulton Park; it looked to be a masterstroke but for a last-gasp effort from Rees, who duly leapt up to second on the same strategy and kept Hedley honest to take the chequered flag line astern in the opening race.

McKenzy Cresswell’s maiden win after a meteoric rise through the order on the opening lap of the reverse grid race gave him some respite after falling foul of the conditions in qualifying, and Joseph Loake scored a popular race three victory to give his title bid a shot in the arm.

For the first time at Knockhill, the pendulum swung towards Rees in the title race, and on a nightmare weekend that marked the beginning of the end for Hedley’s title bid, the Welsh teenager scored a brace of podium finishes to move five points clear out front.

Qualifying maladies for Hedley put him last for the first and third races; Sunday morning’s reverse grid race should have provided some respite, but a mechanical issue forced the Fortec challenger back to the awning before the contest had even begun.

In his absence, Cresswell scored a win for the second meeting in succession, his triumph book-ended by a brace for Zagazeta, who was back in the championship picture after consistent, front-running outings as his rivals hit trouble. At the halfway stage of the season, the top five were blanketed by just 59 points.

The return to Thruxton marked a surge in form for Oliver Gray and a hat-trick for Fortec

Motorsport; the Brit claimed the first victories of his single seater career in races one and three, and team-mate Joel Granfors similarly enjoyed his first trip to the winner’s circle in the reverse grid race. Remarkably, that meant five wins from a possible six in 2021 for Richard Dutton’s outfit, clearly dialled in to the high-speed, slipstream-friendly Hampshire venue.

Cresswell’s late-season bid to get back into the title race gathered momentum at Croft, the 15-year-old winning twice from pole. The reverse grid race was among the highlights of the season, as Carlin’s Dougie Bolger resisted race-long pressure, and a few optimistic lunges at Tower, to secure his maiden win.

Having seized the championship lead in Yorkshire, Zagazeta was then the only driver amongst the chief title protagonists to win on a dramatic weekend at Silverstone. His success in the opener was followed by a maiden win for Dimitrov, now racing for Arden, before Loake survived an incident-strewn finale that claimed all bar Cresswell of the top five in the standings.

After a shaky patch midway through the campaign, however, Rees hit top form again at the perfect time. Donington Park hosted the penultimate event, and the JHR racer was peerless, storming to a double victory to put himself in pole position for the title.

A race-ending mistake for Zagazeta at Sheene Curve left him in the gravel in the closing stages of race one at the Brands Hatch finale, meaning Rees needed just a four-point swing in the penultimate race of the season to secure the honours.

He duly delivered, rising from the sixth row of the grid to finish fifth and, with Zagazeta ninth, spark jubilant scenes in the JHR garage as Steven Hunter’s team celebrated a long overdue maiden title, and with it the Rookie and Teams Cups to boot.

Despite finishing second to Cresswell in the final race of the season, Zagazeta was able to pip him to the runner-up spot overall by just a single point.

Mighty Middlehurst This year’s Avon Tyres National Formula Ford Championship was certainly a contest that went right down to the final race of the season, with a three-way fight right from the very start. Three drivers, three different teams and three different chassis meant it was an out and out battle for supremacy.

Donington Park in May started the season after a delay in proceedings due to the pandemic, where 2020 Formula Ford Festival winner Rory Smith charged to victory in the wet from Low Dempsey Racing’s Max Esterson and Kevin Mills Racing’s Alex Walker, two drivers we’d see a lot of at the front throughout the year. Dry conditions prevailed the next day with Walker capturing a brace of wins while Smith and Esterson also shared the podium places with Luke Cooper and Jamie Sharp.

Then it was a trip north to Knockhill to join the Scottish Formula Ford drivers in a pair of races, the second running for the David Leslie Trophy. Walker and Middlehurst diced hard at the front for victory in the first race with Walker coming out on top, but despite going through the same battle again in race two, it was Middlehurst who managed to prevail to pick up the win and therefore the David Leslie Trophy in the process, something Chris was honoured to receive. Silverstone would then produce the first two race wins of Max Esterson’s Formula Ford career, both of which came either side of a collision with Walker in the second race that left Middlehurst to take the flag first, while Joey Foster, Walker, Smith and Mills also shared podiums between them.

By this point the front-runners were starting to emerge with Walker, Middlehurst and Esterson now making their marks as the top three drivers in the field after the first three meetings. A damp Anglesey weekend was next, where Middlehurst carried on clawing back points after his rough opening meeting with a brace of victories, but it was the third that would provide a special moment in the season as former British F4 racer Jamie Sharp drove superbly in the adverse conditions, taking full advantage of the reverse grid to take a brilliant first National Formula Ford

win. From there it was on to Formula Ford’s spiritual home of Brands Hatch and a chance for Walker to get back to winning ways, with two wins falling either side of a second of the season for Rory Smith. The third race saw Walker manage to pull away by several seconds while KMR teammate Thomas Mills brilliantly played rear gunner to hold off Middlehurst, Sharp, Smith, Esterson and Colin Queen. With just two meetings left, battlelines had been drawn between the top three in the championship.

A support slot alongside the British GT Championship at Oulton Park would act as a centrepiece of the season and it was Walker again that set the pace for most of the weekend. A pair of wins helped him maintain top spot in the points as Esterson and Mills took a pair of seconds and thirds respectively, but Middlehurst kept himself firmly in the fight with the reverse grid win on Sunday to set up a thrilling three-way dance for the finale.

But when Snetterton rolled around, Walker’s win in the first race proved to be something of a false dawn. With no ability to use any of the results from the final weekend as dropped scores, every single point counted in Norfolk and come Sunday, what looked like a prerequisite to Alex’s championship coronation quickly turned into a nightmare. Getting tangled up with returning guest driver Niall Murray left Walker with damage that forced him out of the race, while team-mate Mills picked up his first National win while Middlehurst and Esterson crucially took back more points. Then, just a couple of laps into the final race and charging through from deep in the grid, a collision with Morgan Quinn left Walker spearing off into the barriers and out of the race, cruelly ending his title charge there and then.

As Murray took the victory (but invisible for points being a guest entry), Middlehurst finished third on the road and took second place points to be provisionally crowned National Formula Ford champion, while Walker had to settle for an agonising second place and Esterson rounded off an excellent year of racing in the UK with third.

Chris Middlehurst followed in father Andy’s footsteps by adding FF1600 success to his CV as he claimed the Avon Tyres National Formula Ford Championship.

Jacked Up! The Northern Formula Ford 1600 Championship fell to Jack Wolfenden as the category saw increased support.

Jacked Up! The 2021 season would see Jack Wolfenden, in his 2017-built Firman, become the latest driver to put himself into the history books as a Northern Formula Ford 1600 champion.

The championship enjoyed some amazing support throughout the season with more than fourty drivers in total registering to compete in at least one of the six meetings that took place over the course of the year, bringing both modern and classic Formula Ford chassis together.

The Avon Tyres Northern and Super Classic Formula Ford 1600 Championship got underway at Mallory Park where Joey Foster in a ’21-specification Firman recorded a couple of dominant victories with Wolfenden his closest challenger.

Nonetheless, with Foster concentrating on the National series for the rest of the year, a brace of second places was an excellent start to Wolfenden’s campaign. He used up his two dropped scores by missing the next meeting of the championship, also at Mallory a few weeks later.

In his absence, Nigel Dolan (Van Diemen JL012K) took the race one honours after a sweeping move around the outside of Stuart Kestenbaum’s Class C Van Diemen RF79 but he was unable to do the double as he had the wrong set up on his car for the wet second encounter, therefore George McDonald was able to take the only overall victory of the

season for a Super Classic car in his Class A Swift SC94K. Wolfenden was back in action at Oulton Park and had a statistically perfect day as he topped the timesheets in qualifying before taking two wins and two fastest laps.

The visit to Anglesey allowed Wolfenden to measure himself against the National Championship’s contenders as they shared the track with the Northern and Super Classic runners. Jack was the fifth quickest overall in the joint qualifying session. He went on to take another maximum haul of Northern points.

So, it was four out of four at Oulton and Anglesey for Wolfenden but this run was broken by Van Diemen RF03 driver, James Hadfield, when the series returned to Mallory Park. Jack returned to the top step of the podium later in the day, however.

Some of the best racing of the season took place at Oulton Park’s final double-header as David McArthur made his only appearance of the year in a Medina BH19. He raced hard but fair with Wolfenden and won on both outings with the champion elect fractions of a second behind each time they took the flag.

There were always great battles going on amongst the Super Classic runners, and at the end of the season, the titles went to Paul Mason (Class A Swift SC94K); Nick Barnes (Class B Swift FB89); Ben Hadfield (Class C Van Diemen RF78) and Ian Fernihough (Class D Titan Mk6).

Rob Smith survived a nervy final event to win the BRSCC Fiesta Championship, explains Scott Woodwiss.

The 2021 BRSCC Fiesta Championship was a landmark one with renewed image and interest, thanks to the brand new ST240 class which catered to the newer Mk7 ST180 Fiestas that featured increased power output and a range of upgrades.

After the new cars debuted during 2020 as an invitation class while being developed, several familiar names jumped into them for 2021 where they would now be eligible to score points alongside the existing ST150s.

John Cooper fired the first shot at Croft as he made the most of having more mileage in the new car than anyone else to claim both wins with Luke Pinder, Rob Smith and Simon Horrobin all sharing podium finishes between them and all full of praise for the new cars.

Over in the ST150s, young hotshot Ethan Rogers started his quest for class glory well with two wins from Jack Youhill both times, while Briannie Davis and Rosie Hunt both shared a third place each. The next rounds were at Oulton Park, where many of the ST240 drivers had found more pace, the most pertinent being Luke Pinder who took both victories for himself as Zachary Lucas, David Nye, Smith and Spencer Stevenson also joined him on the podium across the day. Rogers would again top the ST150s both times, chased by William Kellett, Briannie Davis and Matt Chambers.

A triple-header at Snetterton then took the number of overall race winners to four from the first three meetings, as former class champion and BTCC racer David Nye found his form again with two wins, before JamSport team boss Jamie Going also got back to winning ways once more with a further four drivers also gracing the podium including previous champion Alastair Kellett, proving just how competitive the championship was becoming courtesy of the new car. Someone other than Ethan Rogers came out on top amidst the ST150s, as both Alastair’s son William Kellett and Nick Moore shared wins between them.

The first of two Cadwell Park trips in August firmly pushed Alastair Kellett into title contention as he claimed a brace of wins for

himself before Luke Pinder collected his third of the season, while behind them it was Rob Smith that was quietly picking up strong and consistent results that were helping him climb to the top of the points table. This was helped by mechanical gremlins for long time leader Pinder which forced him to finish 11th in the first race, but he still managed to climb back through on Sunday for his race three win. The title dynamic then changed again at Donington Park in September, where incredibly two more winners were added to the 2021 tally: Simon Horrobin became the third driver to win two on the same weekend, while Smith successfully held him off in race three to finally claim that long overdue first Fiesta win, to his and his JamSport team’s delight.

With just the return leg to Cadwell Park left, Smith led the points table from Pinder and Kellett in the top three, knowing that keeping out of trouble was the main task. However, just a handful of laps into race one, that plan practically crumbled as fluid dropped at Chris Curve sent Rob and several other cars off the road and into the barriers. Despite the damage, Smith limped round on the restart to finish seventh while Kellett and Pinder finished 1-2. Overnight repairs got Smith’s car back to full health, and a tentative sixth place in race two limited the damage of Pinder and Kellett finishing 1-2 again, this time the other way round. A beneficial reverse grid draw helped him run away with victory in the final race, subsequently handing Rob the Fiesta title, while team boss Going held Pinder to a third place and runner up in points. Kellett sadly retired after contact on the first start put him out of the race and the title hunt.

As for the ST150s, Ethan Rogers continued his fine form despite one or two hiccups (including a blown engine at Cadwell in August) to end the year as the top ST150 driver, followed up by Briannie Davis in an excellent second and rookie Marlo Cordell making the most of a part season to wind up in third. With seven different overall winners and plenty of new interest in the series for 2022, it looks like the Fiesta Championship is firmly getting back to its best!

Jenson Brickley was the master of the BRSCC Fiesta Junior Championship which enjoyed another mighty season.

After a magical 2020 in which the series came back from the brink to thrive once more, the BRSCC Fiesta Junior Championship remained in good shape heading into 2021 with many of the newcomers from the year before remaining for a sophomore year, as well as a number of brand new faces making their debuts.

As always, the racing was close, exciting and dramatic from start to finish across the year.

Two drivers who made an instant impact as guest competitors at the opening rounds at Croft in May were Deagen Fairclough and James Wallis, who both thrived in Friday testing and immediately settled into their new cars. Fairclough settled the quickest with a new qualifying lap record to take pole and then subsequently conquered both dry and wet conditions to take an incredible pair of wins. However, as a guest competitor he was ineligible to score points, so therefore the scores instead went to Sid Smith and Alex Ley. Nonetheless, both Fairclough and Wallis were satisfied enough that they elected to remain for the rest of the season.

FJC history was made in June with a first ever visit to Oulton Park, the venue having never hosted the juniors since the championship’s inception back in 2012. Jenson Brickley used the day’s racing to firmly put himself into contention as a title contender here and the brace of wins he collected was the warning shot that put the rest of the field on notice. Both wins were fairly commanding, leaving Fairclough, Ley and Jake Maynard to trail in his wake and fill out the podium spots.

Fairclough proved his pace once more at the first quadruple-header at Snetterton, featuring the equivalent of two race weekends worth of track time on a single weekend. Deagen would win three of them, and could have taken a clean sweep had a mechanical issue not forced him out of Saturday’s second race.

Brickley would instead take the honours there

along with three podiums, while Wallis, Smith and Maynard were also rostrum visitors that weekend.

Both Fairclough and Brickley were turning out to be two of the fastest drivers in the championship and a rivalry was beginning to slowly brew over the opening races, but this began to boil over somewhat at the first Cadwell Park visit. The pair ran away in the lead in race one, but a last corner overtaking attempt had both cars colliding and spinning into the barriers within sight of the flag. Brickley recovered quickest, but couldn’t stop Jake Triggs from charging past to steal his first FJC victory, while the two protagonists settled for second (Brickley) and third (Fairclough).

Deagan made up for it with a win in race two while Brickley suffered a suspension problem that forced him out of the race, as Wallis and Ley once again stood on the podium.

20Ten Racing was firmly in charge on the Donington Park GP circuit, with Brickley taking another win before a time penalty for track limits pushed him back to second behind team-mate James Wallis, who in turn collected a first junior race win for himself. Fairclough hit troubles in race one and was then also hit with track limits penalties leaving him eighth, while the consistent Sid Smith bagged a pair of third places to keep him in the top three in points.

Returning to Cadwell for the finale, Fairclough drove his heart out to claim another strong pair of wins while Wallis and Brickley traded podium places across both, the results being enough to crown Jenson as the 2021 Fiesta Junior champion. Wallis’ amazing consistent efforts scored him second in points ahead of Sid Smith, while Wallis would also finish the year as top rookie.

2022 will have a brand new next-generation junior race car compete alongside the existing ST150s, which will slowly be phased out to allow the new car to take over. It’s an exciting time to get involved in the Fiesta Junior Championship!

Top of the Charts Sam Smith: Top of the Charts

Sam Smith retained his BRSCC Mazda MX-5 SuperCup crown as another hectic season of racing played out.

Scott Woodwiss tells the story.

The success of the BRSCC Mazda MX-5 SuperCup in 2020 after the Mk3 paddock reunited impressed many within club motorsport including the BRSCC itself, and meant that 2021 was full of potential for it to be one of the best seasons ever. But noone quite predicted that it would post the BRSCC’s best average grid numbers of the year as its popularity and competitiveness positively exploded to new levels.

Defending champion Sam Smith wouldn’t begin his title defence with a win at the opening Croft weekend, as it would be Patrick Fletcher that saw all his hard work as an independent driver come to fruition with a pair of excellent drives to claim his first two MX-5 SuperCup victories at long last, with returning front-runner Jack Harding and champion Smith taking second and third in both. In the reverse grid race, another first time winner was produced as James Cossins held off Smith and Harding to claim his inaugural top step visit in fine style.

Silverstone’s mixed conditions ended up producing a different winner in each race, with Smith winning a frantic race one, then Fletcher battling tougher wet weather to take his third win from five races in the second and finally Harding would take the first win of his full-

All this took place amidst an entry that boasted 40 cars, one of the largest SuperCup grids to date.

What followed would arguably be a defining sequence in the championship season as Sam Smith went to Anglesey in Wales and took victories in all three races with Harding and Fletcher joining him in the top three on all three occasions, but not content with dominating one race weekend, Smith would then go and do the same at Snetterton a few weeks later. He topped the Pro Class in all three races again, although race two would be won overall by his team-mate and Club Class runner Richard Amos, and Smith did also have to overcome a grid penalty in the same encounter after contact with Harding that left Jack finishing 10th. Cossins, Adam Bessell and Brayden Fletcher also claimed podiums as the second half of the season and title battle beckoned.

Cadwell Park in sunny August would be another meeting that produced three different winners, as Smith extended his Pro Class win streak to seven in the first, before Harding ended it in race two and James Cossins once again took full advantage of the reverse grid

rule for race three to come out on top there.

Donington Park certainly didn’t do Smith’s title chances any harm either despite the near-constant pressure from Harding, as two more wins went his way to further edge out his points lead as Harding grabbed a pair of seconds for his troubles. Adam Bessell then became the latest SuperCup winner in race three, only just holding off both Smith and Harding to cover the top three by 0.6 seconds.

Harding knew he had to outscore Smith as much as possible to steal the title at the final rounds at Brands Hatch, and even though he won two of the three races with Declan Lee winning his first in the other, a third and two fourth place finishes were enough to give Sam Smith the points to secure back-to-back Pro Class titles in fine fashion, as Harding took runners-up spot and James Cossins concluded 2021 a fine third.

The Club class had bike racing convert Kevin Silvain exert his dominance early before a steady string of results in class allowed him to remain top of the points table for the entire season, managing to beat both Clive Powles and Richard Amos to the crown. Martin Tolley was also triumphant in the Masters class, with Powles again second and Xavier Brooke placing third.

The Mazda MX-5 Championship generated a season of fierce racing in which Oliver Allwood triumphed. Scott Woodwiss watched the drama.

As 2020 Mazda MX-5 Championship champion Joe Wiggin moved on into pastures new for the 2021 season, several top drivers took the opportunity to take up the mantle and become a brand new champion. No-one in the field in 2021 had ever won the title before, so the prospect of someone new taking the main prize meant the racing to come was sure to be exciting and memorable.

Croft in May marked the start of the journey and Tucker Motorsport immediately pressed to pick up where it had left off from the year previous as new young team leader Jack Brewer set his stall out immediately. A trio of wins gave him the perfect launch pad to begin the campaign, with Oliver Allwood, Michael Knibbs, Steve Foden and Fraser Fenwick marking themselves out as potential key rivals as they shared the podium places between them.

However, it was a different story for Jack at Silverstone as he found himself in a spin courtesy of Brian Trott at the end of the first race, for which Brian was quick to apologise, while Fenwick collected his first win of the year.

The second race was no better for Brewer as contact on the opening lap pushed him down the pack and left him recovering to a top 20 finish, while Foden drove superbly in wet conditions to climb from 19th to a long awaited

first of two BRSCC MX-5 wins that weekend ahead of Trott and Sebastian Fisher. Foden then did it again in the third race after an epic battle at the front of the pack, the top five covered by less than a second with Allwood and Trott on the podium again.

Brewer managed to get back to the top step next time out at a murky Anglesey, collecting wins in the first two before Allwood finally managed to collect his first of the season in the third, while Trott, Foden, Allwood himself, Zak Oates, Oliver Graham and Fisher all shared the podium places between them, with Fisher coming close to his first MX-5 win by leading the final race of the weekend until half distance before Allwood took over. Two more wins for Brewer took his tally to six as the championship crossed the half way point at the one-day Snetterton meeting, followed by Trott taking his first win of the year in race three to complete a set of podium positions from that day. He’d finished third and second earlier in the day swapping places with Fisher, as Allwood and Fenwick made up the final podium of the day later in the afternoon.

However, despite the win tally leaving Brewer with a clear advantage in the lead, his victories at Snetterton would be the last he would score for the remainder of the season. Allwood fired himself straight back into contention with an excellent hat-trick of

wins next time out at Cadwell Park, including an AB Motorsport 1-2-3 in the first race, as Brewer collected two second places and a fourth to reduce the impact on his points lead.

Any tension between the two title protagonists appeared to begin to boil over at Donington Park, but amongst it Sebastian Fisher put in two sterling drives to finally take his first pair of wins in the championship to his and his team’s delight. As for Brewer and Allwood, the pair tangled in race one sending Brewer down the order and finishing in 10th, while Allwood took third. Oliver also took a win in race three to set up the showdown at Brands Hatch.

With the final rounds amidst the 50th Formula Ford Festival, Brewer found himself in an uphill struggle against the phalanx of AB Motorsport team-mates in support of Allwood, particularly Fraser Fenwick with whom he made contact with in race one and was handed a time penalty which knocked him down to 14th in the result. While he recovered back to ninth in race two and a second place in the final race, Allwood’s pair of P2s and a fourth would be enough for him to obtain the Mazda MX-5 Championship crown, after some seven years of trying and coming close on more than one occasion. Brewer claimed the runner up spot, while Brian Trott took third and the Masters title as just reward for his strong efforts during the season.

The new BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Clubman Championship fell to Harry Storer.

Given how successful the BRSCC’s Mazda MX-5 Championship had become over the last few years with consistently packed entries of 50+ cars across two grids, the decision was taken to create a brand new sister championship for Mk1 race cars, the BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Clubman Championship. A one-day, two race format that gives newcomers and racing enthusiasts a perfect gateway to begin racing in the BRSCC Mazda paddock, and it proved popular over the course of its first year.

The season started tentatively at Croft in May with a 12-car entry taking part for the inaugural two races, where Harry Storer set out his stall early with a commanding pair of wins, which turned out to be something of an omen for the rest of the year ahead. Podiums were shared between Rob Greensmith, Jay Shepherd, Kevin Bird and Richard Bartlett, proving the competitiveness the new championship could provide from the get-go.

Silverstone produced a sensational entry of over 30 cars, including some drivers competing as invitation entries. Of those guest drivers, Owen Mills drove to a brace of wins and was joined by fellow invitation drivers Adam Sparrow and Oak Richardson over the day, while Chris Dawkins would take the “win” from those scoring points in race one with championship leader Storer claiming the second later on. Next came a windy and wet weekend at Anglesey in Wales, where Storer

again proved his ultimate pace to increase his win tally to five, however he was pushed hard at times by the likes of Alan Hawkins and George Grant who both took podiums between them. By this stage, it was looking as though Harry was beginning to become the favourite for the first ever MX-5 Clubman title, but there was still more than half of the campaign left to run.

The battle in the points was put on hold at Snetterton as both Storer and the consistent scoring Rob Greensmith both had to miss these rounds due to prior commitments. This now opened up the door for some new faces to take to the podium and indeed grab some winning silverware. In both races, the top three would be the same as Matthew Fletcher took his first two MX-5 wins since he began in the paddock, followed by Jon Pethick in second each time and Neil Chisnall grabbing a pair of 3rds. Cadwell Park saw both Storer and Greensmith return, with the former this time having to go up against MX-5 returnee Kevin Dengate who proved he still had a turn of speed. Despite Harry’s best efforts to unseat him, Dengate drove both races brilliantly to hold him off and claim a double win, as Chisnall also collected another couple of third places to make it four on the bounce.

With just two meetings left, it was looking increasingly likely that Storer’s strong points lead would be insurmountable as the championship moved on to Donington Park in September, where Harry wouldn’t finish higher

than sixth across the pair of races featuring a bumper entry of cars that included BRSCC’s very own Paul McErlean and Luke Souch among many other drivers. In Storer’s place on the top step of the podium came two more new race winners, as Matthew Bankhurst drove brilliantly in a three-car battle at the head of the field to win ahead of Jay Shepherd and Jon Pethick, before Shepherd then took his first MX-5 victory in race two from Steven Bartlett and Charles Boniface.

All Storer needed to do at the Brands Hatch finale was score well and keep out of trouble in the final two races to become champion and with a lead of almost 100 points going into the weekend, it was practically a foregone conclusion. Like Donington, he wouldn’t win either race as the returning Chris Dawkins took both with Brad Jones, Alan Hawkins and David Waters all taking the remaining silverware, while Storer’s sixth and seventh places were enough to crown him the first ever champion of the BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Clubman Championship. Rob Greensmith finished runner-up and Masters champion as well as being crowned the championship’s first Rookie of the Year and teammate Kevin Bird would take the final podium spot in the points table with third place.

After some amazing support and incredible progress for its first season and plenty of interest over the winter, the MX-5 Clubman Championship looks set to be just as strong and successful once again in 2022!

Across the first two seasons of its existence, the BRSCC’s Clubsport Trophy series had proven to be something of a phenomenon. With its simple 45 minute mini-endurance format featuring a mandatory pitstop, a straightforward fiveclass structure based on power to weight ratio and the ability for both solo and two driver entries to compete, it had inspired many to take part and thus provide packed grids wherever it went. Now with great momentum, 2021 looked set to be the best season yet.

Croft in North Yorkshire kicked off the season with a track heavily saturated by late Sunday afternoon rain, where Tom Stanway’s BMW 328i got the initial jump before being caught by Liam Crilly’s BMW Z4 and the David May/ Mark Skeats Nissan 370Z. Crilly pulled out a lead while the Invitation class Fiesta ST240s of Jamie Going and Dominic Bush climbed to 2nd and 3rd respectively, before Stanway was tagged into a spin by the 370Z before he pitted. Once the stops had shaken out, Going caught the Z4 of Crilly in the closing stages and won the race on the road overall, but the official winner would be Crilly, from Kelly Brabbin’s Class A winning Toyota Celica and Stanway’s recovering 328i. Invitation class cars would not be recognised as winners due to being outside the regular class structure.

A sold-out grid turned up for the next Clubsport race at Silverstone on the National circuit, with the front of the grid dominated

by Invitation class Fiesta ST240s. Stanway again found himself in the lead again in the beginning chased by the Mk4 Mazda MX-5 of Paul Sheard and Mike Comber and the Toyota MR2 SuperGT of Olly Samways. An early safety car for an inverted Fiesta saw the pit window open under caution, but the M3-engined BMW Compact of David Shead & Malcolm Edeson pitted just as it opened which gave them the lead on the restart. Eventually,

Stanway closed them down in the final laps, the pair making contact before he passed clean to win overall from the Compact in 2nd and Samways a distant 3rd.

More wet weather was present at the first of two Snetterton visits in July, once again safety car interrupted early on due to a first lap incident which took out two Fiestas and Stanway’s BMW. Behind the invitation Fiestas, the May/ Skeats Nissan gave chase and eventually they would find themselves out in front overall through the stops. Even though they did take the flag first, a technical infringement on the Nissan and pit stop penalties for other cars in turn meant it was Matt Higginson’s Honda Civic Type R that was declared the winner with Roan Lundy’s Toyota Celica and another Civic Type R of Michael Heath and Justin Roberts behind him.

The usual suspects were back at Donington Park as Shead and Edeson, May and Skeats, Jamie Going and Tom Stanway all took up the front running spots from the beginning and through another safety car affected race and pit stop phase, it would be three of the aforementioned four making up the overall podium as the Shead/Edeson BMW Compact finally claimed an outright Clubsport win, ahead of Stanway’s 328i and the May/ Skeats 370Z. The season was rounded off with another visit to Snetterton in October, and despite a smaller field than usual it was still filled with quality entries. An invitation BMW driven by Jasver Sapra was first to the flag overall, but David May enjoyed a solo run in the Nissan to claim Clubsport victory, ahead of Shead and Edeson once more and then Scott Ferguson’s supercharged Mazda MX-5 Mk1.

If one thing is certain in 2022, given the astronomical levels of interest, the Clubsport Trophy is ready to hit new highs throughout the season with its biggest ever calendar with seven events and the real prospect of sold out grids at every single round – bring it on!

Up for the (Fun) Cup The Fun Cup Endurance Championship went the way of the dominant UVio/ Hofmann's team, as Peter Scherer reports.

The Fun Cup Endurance Championship racing was close, there were plenty of incidents and drama, but one thing didn’t change this year and that was the dominance throughout of UVio/Hofmanns’ Farquini Deott and Fabio Randaccio.

The pair showed intent in the opening round at a wet Donington Park, although Track Focused’s Teddy Wilson proved his pace on his Fun Cup Endurance debut, leading for much of the opening stint. But UVio led for the last 94 laps of the race to seal win number one of the season, from DespatchBay’s Andy Bicknell and Harry Mailer.

Defending champions Team Olympian with Chris Dovell, Kristian Rose and Riley Phillips were set for third, but Phillips was forced to make a late splash and dash which dropped them to fifth and gave MJ Tec GITI’s Scott Jeffs and Martin Gibson a podium finish on the team’s debut.

Nigel Greensall deputised for Nick Nunn to share the Team Viking car with Mark Holme for fourth, with GCI’s Craig Butterworth/Ian Wood completing the top six.

Despite Randaccio having to pit with a rear puncture, UVio came from the back to win at Silverstone. DespatchBay was second again, but there were plenty of problems for other crews. Sean Cooper was challenging at the front for Track Focused until an alternator belt snapped, while Gary Bate’s Greenheath entry had an HT lead come off. Enduro’s Marcus Clutton and Morgan Tillbrook broke the throttle cable and Neil Plimmer had the clutch explode exiting the pitlane in his PLR car. There was more bad news for Olympian, when Phillips retired with a blown engine. Holme and Nunn completed the podium for Team Viking.

There were two races at Anglesey, one day-time and one at night. Colin Kingsnorth’s Stobart Sport car was out early in race one when the engine let go after radiator damage,

Up for the (Fun) Cup only for Ellis Hadley’s GT Radial car to go off on the oil. UVio had tyre problems and suffered its first defeat at the hands of title rivals DespatchBay, but still made the podium in second, with PLR joining them. The Greensall car of the Smeeth family, with Nigel sharing, had won on the road, but was excluded on a technicality. Team Viking had gone out with a hub failure and Olympian was out for the rest of the weekend, after Phillips suffered an engine failure 15 minutes from the flag.

UVio soon returned to winning ways later in the day, with a masterful performance in the dark. Viking made up for its earlier disappointment to take second, while Greenheath secured a first podium finish. It was more bad luck for PLR though when it had a driveshaft go while in fifth, similarly MJ Tec, when Gibson lost drive.

Oulton Park was the venue for round five, but there was some early safety car action, after Ryan Lewis suffered a cut-out in the Greensall car, Olympian’s Dovell was in the gravel and We Have No Ideas’s Paul Calladine hit the barrier, all on the first lap. Agua Caliente’s early challenge faded when Paul Turner had manifold problems and Greensall made a rare mistake, spinning the CCS Media car at Knickerbrook. There was a terrific climax between Randaccio and Phillips, but it was win number four for UVio, from Olympian and PLR. It was north to Croft for the next round and the first problem for championship leaders UVio, after a hub failure. Both RAW’s Paul Rivett and Stand2’s Compton had spells in the lead, but Olympian finally had something to celebrate, as Phillips took the lead to seal the win, despite struggling at the end with a broken downshift. Enduro’s Clutton, who held on for second with a broken seat, pushed him hard.

DespatchBay kept its title hopes alive with a strong third, which ended with Mailer triple stinting. GCI, Viking and Stand2 were also in

the top six, but there was no joy for previous champion Chris Hart, in a one-off return with MakeHappen and Neil Burroughs, after they broke a driveshaft.

Oulton’s second event was also a two-race format, starting with a one-hour sprint. Rivett and Deott battled it out at the front, but the safety car wiped out Rivett’s lead, after Bicknell had tipped JPR Black Widows’ Dom Jackson off at Cascades. It was win number five for UVio, with Olympian and PLR completing the podium. UVio made it a double win in the afternoon’s Enduro, with DespatchBay and PLR joining them on the podium. MakeHappen was fourth, which placed it firmly in second for the championship, with MJ Tec GITI and Agua Caliente fifth and sixth, after Olympian’s Rose crashed heavily into a stricken Scrappy Clark in the JPR Black Widows car.

The championship finished where it had started at Donington Park. British GT race winners Clutton and Tillbrook claimed the win from MakeHappen, who had Burroughs deputising for Walton. UVio and PLR had been battling for second, but they clashed at the chicane late on. Randaccio was out, but Plimmer was classified fourth after a penalty, which left MJ Tec GITI with Callum Cripps deputising for Gibson, in third, with Stobart’s and CCS Media rounding off the final top six.

With six wins from nine races it was UVio/ Hofmanns’ title, for Deott and Randaccio, 30 points clear of MakeHappen’s Evans and Walton, despite taking only one podium over the season. DespatchBay’s Bicknell and Mailer had four podiums, including their win at Anglesey, while MJ Tec GITI were third overall, starting and finishing the season with a third place. Fifth overall were PLR, the Masters Champions, from Black Widows’ Jackson, Clark and Steve Harris and CCS Media’s Bob Tomlinson, Alan Honarmand and the guesting Nigel Greensall and Steve Johansen.

Quintuple Crown Stephen Nuttall achieved a grand slam of Caterham titles, as Scott Woodwiss explains.

The top-line Caterham Seven Championship UK went on the quest to find its second ever British Caterham champion in 2021, with a brand new specification of car and race weekend format looking to further refine its status as the pinnacle of Caterham racing in the UK. Caterham’s premier championship has firmly established itself as one of the most competitive and exciting race series in the country and it’s now a National Championship courtesy of Motorsport UK. From 2021 bespoke Avon Slick and wet tyres were introduced to increase the race performance and the pace, along with uprated suspension and an increased engine rev limit.

The Championship is a grid of quality drivers, most of whom have worked their way up through the Caterham ranks, which ensures that the top-level Caterham racing is amongst the most exciting on offer.

The wet weather of Donington Park provided a stern first test for the new spec cars, and first to show their hand early was Stephen Nuttall, a multi Caterham champion who was looking to claim the final piece of championship silverware in his increasingly large trophy cabinet. Despite the rain, he dueled with Henry Heaton and Gordon Sawyer on his way to the first win of the year, and then with James Murphy in the first of Sunday’s races where he had to come second best as Murphy incredibly claimed a sensational first Seven UK win on his first weekend in the top flight series. Nuttall was again on top in a red flag shortened race three, giving him the championship lead as Knockhill in June beckoned.

In Scotland, Nuttall couldn’t better a second place as the victories ended up being shared by an in-form Heaton who took two for himself, before Sawyer recovered from a race one incident, that caused him to retire, to finish the weekend with a win, making him the fourth different winner from six races. This number would then increase to five at Silverstone on

the GP circuit, as another former champion, William Smith, rose to the top. He battled his way to the front of race one where he only took the win by the skin of his teeth (or 0.021 seconds to be exact) from Heaton and Sawyer, before Sawyer’s wet weather prowess shone on his way to the win in race two and then Nuttall found his form again by taking race three for himself ahead of his fellow Silverstone victors that weekend.

The same three names that had topped the podium at Silverstone once again shared a win apiece at the next rounds at Brands Hatch, where Smith mimicked his race one form by taking victory once again despite a late rain shower. Sunday morning drizzle meant the circuit was still tricky, but Nuttall was able to hold firm to win race two of the weekend, followed by Sawyer later in the day who topped the third to keep the championship battle at the top very interesting. A support slot on the British GT timetable at Oulton Park was next, but the weather wasn’t kind in the end. After Nuttall added another win to his tally in the first race, a sudden downpour in the second caught drivers out on slick tyres, forcing a red flag.

When the result was declared, Murphy was given the win from Monks and Swann-Dixon and none of the championship contenders even made the top 10.

So, it all came down to Cadwell Park where, despite the smaller field, the racing was some of the closest and most intense there had been all season. Victories where shared between Nuttall who took races one and three with the chasing pack right on his tail all the way, as well as Heaton who ended up taking his at a canter by more than six seconds. But the results from the final weekend ensured that Stephen Nuttall was not only crowned the second ever British Caterham champion, but he was also the first driver in Caterham Motorsport history to win a title in every one of the five factory championships. No wonder he’s still referred to by some as the “Roger Federer of Caterham racing”!

Lewis Thompson scooped the Caterham Seven 310R Championship despite missing the opening event. Scott Woodwiss reflects on the season.

When drivers move up into the ranks of the Caterham Seven 310R Championship, they will have refined their racing skills to the point where they would be competitive in any top line championship across the UK club and national racing scene and with such a talent-packed field for the 2021 edition, it looked as though it was going to be a memorable year for a number of reasons.

Caterham’s penultimate step on the ladder is the ultimate evolution of the Academy car, with drivers and cars now typically entering their fourth year of competition, many with the benefit of professional team support. Looking identical to the Seven 270R that sits below it, the improvements are all under the skin. The result is considered by many to be the bestbalanced and most enjoyable Caterham ever.

Donington Park’s season opener shared the grid with the Seven Championship UK competitors for their only triple header of 2021.

In their own private battle behind the Seven UK field, it was Pete Walters who fired the first warning shot with victory in the wet ahead of Andy Lees and James Wingfield. When the conditions remained dry for Sunday, it was Lars Hoffmann that came out on top in race two, from Walters and Ben Lopez-Appleton.

Hoffmann couldn’t repeat it in race three when he was caught in a late incident with the Seven UK leaders, handing a second win to Walters ahead of Wingfield and Harry Cook.

Now on solo grids for the rest of the year, Knockhill was next on the calendar and the first chance for impressive youngster Lewis Thompson to show his ability. Having missed Donington, he proved his pace by streaking away in the first by more than four seconds ahead of Cook and Walters, but was reeled back in the next day in race two as he topped a four car scrap for victory with Wingfield

and Walters sharing the podium this time.

There was still no stopping Thompson as the championship headed to the Silverstone GP circuit next time out, increasing his win tally to four from the first seven races with Walters claiming a pair of second places and Cook and David Yates taking a third each.

There was still no shaking either Thompson from P1 nor Walters from P2 as Brands Hatch marked the next stop on the calendar. Both drivers would own those positions in Kent across both races, Thompson managing to dominate the first by over 9 seconds but kept more honest in the second and only victorious by one.

Croft was very much a fast and frantic affair, as despite the top three in both races being the same order – Thompson, Yates and Wingfield – it was far from certain in either encounter, with fierce battles in the top three raging throughout, right until the flag.

Now with just two weekends left to run, the certainty of Thompson coming through to win the championship looked more and more assured, especially thanks to his increasing win streak. Snetterton, however, would mark the end of that run as Pete Walters managed to overcome Thompson’s run of dominance to take victory in both races, despite the young Lewis consistently putting him under big pressure all weekend but unable to better second place as Yates and Andrew Murgatroyd also claimed a podium each.

This just left Cadwell Park to settle it once and for all. In the end it went in favour of Thompson, as he went back to his commanding ways out front, taking both race wins at a canter and sealing the 310R title for 2021. It was an incredible achievement for a driver so young, and it will be fascinating to discover what will happen next in Lewis’ career for 2022!

Blair’s Best Blair McConachie clinched the Caterham Seven 270R Championship at the last, reports Scott Woodwiss.

Blair’s Best There always tends to be some amazing racing in the middle stage of the Caterham Motorsport ladder, as the Seven 270R Championship welcomes those who began their careers two years prior who are eager to continue to put everything they’ve learned so far into practice.

The Seven 270R is firmly established as the ‘coming-of-age’ championship for those progressing out of the Caterham Academy, through the Roadsport championship and now into their third year of Caterham racing. Unlike the lower categories, there is no restriction on professional team support or driver experience.

The Seven 270R racers have typically made their way up from the Academy two seasons ago (or slightly earlier).

With wet weather greeting the drivers for the opening races at Donington Park, Will Rossetti managed to make the most of the conditions in Saturday’s encounter and survived a mid race safety car to take the first win of the season, followed by Harry Eyre and Blair McConachie, two men that were certain to be in the title fight all year long. In the dry of race two the next day, McConachie was dominant out in front, picking up an easy win while Ginetta convert Rob Keogh and Eyre survived a titanic scrap for the podium places throughout.

McConachie’s dream weekend came to fruition next time out as he got the chance to race at his home circuit of Knockhill in Scotland and in front of his family and friends, Blair picked up a pair of exceptional wins to firmly mark himself as a title contender.

Eyre and Keogh had to hold back the tide behind him in each race, as the chasing pack squabbled for second and third before eventually landing Harry and Rob’s way both times. This was followed by the highly anticipated Silverstone GP rounds, where Tom Wyllys, racing as a guest in selected rounds in 2021, re-introduced the form that had won him Academy and Roadsport titles by winning both races. However, in terms of points, Eyre and McConachie were instead handed the scores for the win as they took a P2 on the road each, plus they also shared third places too.

Carl Jones had been a threat to the frontrunners in the first half of the season, but it wasn’t until Brands Hatch that he really got a chance to show his turn of pace. He pressured Stephen Lyall for the entirety of the first race and only stole it away in the final sprint to the line by 0.031 seconds with Wes Payne on their tail in third. McConachie then got back to the top step on Sunday as a red flag brought the race to a halt just before the end, with Blair

confirmed as winner ahead of Jones and Dan Clayphan. It looked like more of the same for McConachie in race one at Croft until a rare DNF for both himself and Eyre lost them both points as Lyall took his first 270R win, ahead of Jones and William Brunt. Lyall then doubled up the next day ahead of Payne and Jones, while McConachie fought strongly from the back of the grid to claim fourth.

With two weekends left, McConachie had a possible chance to provisionally seal up the 270R honours at Snetterton, but it took two starts before race one could properly get underway. When it did, McConachie battled hard to wrestle the win away from Lyall and Eyre by the flag, but couldn’t repeat it in race two when he was tagged by Lyall on the final lap and spun down to fifth, as Eyre capitalized with the win ahead of Lyall and Payne just pipping Jones to third on the line. Cadwell Park was all that stood between Blair and the 270R title and while Lyall took two more brilliant victories, second place and fifth place were enough to give him the crown he’d missed out on the past couple of years. Blair is now keen to emulate long time rival Tom Wyllys and go back to back as he moves up another step to the 310R championship in 2022!

Motul Caterham Seven 270R Championship

Taylor Made Taylor O’Flanagan clinched the Caterham Roadsport Championship, reports Scott Woodwiss.

After completing their first ever season of racing the previous year, even if it was slightly disrupted thanks to the impact of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, the Caterham Roadsport Championship welcomed the sophomore drivers from 2020’s Academy that were all ready to build on the lessons learned on their way to graduation. Friendships were ready to be strengthened (or tested) and on-track rivalries were all set to intensify.

The Roadsport championship is the next step on the Caterham ladder for the Academy drivers and their cars from the previous season, enabling them to enjoy another year of racing with the friends they have battled against in the hugely successful Academy series. With only light modifications, the Roadsport race car is a simple development of the Academy car.

Wet and wild were the best words to describe the opening race at Donington Park, where Tom Cockerill jumped into an early lead from the front row, but it was only mere minutes until fellow 2020 Academy group champion Taylor O’Flanagan took over and charged away to the first win of the season. Cockerill managed to maintain a second place finish, but only after a late challenge from rainmeister Domenique Mannsperger who couldn’t displace him. Thankfully, dry conditions prevailed for Sunday’s race where a nine car leading group went to war over the win and O’Flanagan threw away victory through the gravel at McLeans, leaving the top three to be Cockerill, Mannsperger and Gwyn Jones.

Knockhill gave Hugo Bush the chance to notch up his first two wins of the season, resisting pressure from all comers in race one on Saturday to beat O’Flanagan and Mannsperger to the flag after an epic battle, and then made sure that he was untouchable a day later in the Sunday encounter with a winning margin of over six seconds ahead of Mannsperger and Cockerill. This was followed

by an incredible opportunity to race on the Silverstone GP circuit in July, where Bush took his third win in a row, just ahead of O’Flanagan with Mannsperger again in third, before the top five ended up separated by less than one second in the end in a thrilling Sunday race, with race one’s top three reversed as Mannsperger took his first P1 of the year.

Late contact between Cockerill, Mannsperger and James Hall ended up giving O’Flanagan an unchallenged race one win at Brands Hatch the following month, as Adam West and Hugo Bush took instant advantage to climb onto the podium as a result of the clash. O’Flanagan, Cockerill and Bush then dominated race two the next in a tight leading trio, the three cars finishing in that order after surviving a late rain shower that closed the group up. As the championship moved on to Croft with O’Flanagan and Cockerill locked in combat for the title, O’Flanagan was in command in race one with Mannsperger in tow while Tom survived mid-race contact with Bush to take third. Cockerill’s luck ran out in race two, though, when he pulled off the road in the final minutes and retired, leaving Mannsperger to beat O’Flanagan to the win.

Snetterton proved to be another circuit that only satisfied O’Flanagan’s title aspirations further, battling all race with Bush on Saturday to claim victory that day before dominating in the gloomy conditions of Sunday morning to confirm a brace of wins in Norfolk, leaving Cockerill and Mannsperger trailing on the podium. That double success essentially made O’Flanagan champion-elect, meaning he could afford to miss the finale at Cadwell Park, which he duly did. This left those fighting for runnerup spot to do so between themselves, with Cockerill and Bush winning a race each on the weekend, but Bush claiming P2 in points after Cockerill retired on Sunday, which in turn also promoted Mannsperger into third too. We’ll certainly see more of these guys competing in 2022 in the 270R ranks!

Every season, a brand new class of students begin their racing careers from scratch in the excellent Caterham Academy Championship, which turns ordinary people into bona fide racing drivers that embark on their first full season of competition.

The Caterham Academy is a unique series exclusively for novice drivers. An all-inclusive ‘introduction to motorsport’ package, it includes a Ford Sigma-powered road-legal race car, race licence, technical support, the racing itself and perhaps most importantly, the guidance of the Caterham team at every stage. Given the size of the Academy class each year, drivers are split into one of two groups, Green and White.

After Ian Harris claimed first blood in the Curborough sprint to kick things off, the Green Group began its circuit racing at Mallory Park in May where Geoff Newman practically led the way from start to finish to take the first win of the season, but he was kept honest by the chasing competition at the head of the field. So much so that at the chequered flag, his margin of victory to second-placed Chris Fraser was just over a tenth of a second with the top five (which also included Marc Jones, Mark Kendle and James Cook respectively) only covered by less than a second in the end.

A trip north for a rare double header at Knockhill was next, where an initial multi-car scrap for the lead in Saturday’s race eventually left Newman, Freddie Chiddicks and Jones out in front on their own, the trio ending up in that order at the flag as Mallory winner Newman took his second in a row. He wouldn’t make it three on Sunday as mistakes late in the race lost Geoff the lead before a multi-car collision took himself, Fraser and Paul Woodman all out

on the spot and stopped the race. Chiddicks drove on to secure P1 from Jones and Robert Demain behind.

Another significant moment for the Academy was a round on the Silverstone GP circuit in a combined grid with the White Group. In one of the drier periods of the weekend, Green Group drivers locked out the overall top three finishing positions with Newman dominant out in front as he won by more than five seconds from Chiddicks and Jones who duked it out for second place behind him. The form book then did a complete 180 at Brands Hatch when Chiddicks proved untouchable from his front row start and was commanding all race long, winning by nearly nine seconds after Newman had to fight through to second with Jones taking another P3.

With two meetings to go, Newman tried to keep his place as the championship leader at the penultimate round at Croft, leading the first half before he, Chiddicks and Jones swapped P1 between each other before Chiddicks would claim the race for himself, increasing his win tally to three for the season with Jones and Newman back on the podium, leaving just Snetterton to decide the title. In Norfolk, it was advantage Chiddicks in race one as again he left Newman to scrap for second early on and built an insurmountable four-second gap to his main rival to take a fourth win with Jones again rounding off the podium. The final race put the top two on the front row together and it was a tense affair throughout, but sensationally it landed with Newman stealing the fastest lap on the final tour to claim the title from under Chiddick’s nose. A thrilling conclusion to their first ever year of racing!

Lovecars Caterham Academy, Green Group

It’s always exciting to watch the Caterham Academy drivers venture into their first season of racing after graduating from their ARDS tests together and then learning the basics of their race cars in the pre-season handling, drift and test days that prepare them for competition. Both groups typically feature close and intense battles for the championship crown, and as it was for the Green Group in 2021, the same was evident over with their White Group counterparts.

Charlie Lower would kick off his campaign in the best possible way by claiming the opening sprint at Curborough, something that would begin to set the tone for the rest of the season. Mallory Park marked the first circuit racing of the drivers’ careers, and the White Group got the worst weather between the two groups. William James launched well from the front row to take the lead and was superb on a damp but drying track to dominate the opening race by almost seven seconds ahead of Lower and Benja Hedley.

Knockhill would offer a double-header of races across both days, and it was all about Harry George and William James in the lead of Saturday’s encounter, dueling intensely either side of a safety car to own the top two places.

James managed to add another win to his tally in a photo finish as the pair left third-placed Gareth Lucas in their wake by several seconds.

On Sunday, the top three would belong to the same trio of drivers, albeit this time with George ahead of James and all covered by 1.6 seconds.

A special moment in July came when the Academy had the chance to race on the Silverstone GP circuit for only their fourth ever race, and on a combined grid it was Lower who

got his first race win of the season after his Curborough sprint success. Finishing eighth overall, he was top White Group runner ahead of Harry George in P2 and William James in third. Moving across to Brands Hatch in August, George’s rocket propelled start helped him initially but another back-and-forth scrap with both James and Lower saw them put on a real show of racecraft for the spectators, eventually finishing up with a victory for George from Lower and James on the podium.

The trip to Croft in September had an early red flag for an incident at Hawthorns, which meant Lower had to make two attempts from the front row to try and beat George and co, his cause being made easier when George slid wide at the Complex mid race, allowing Giles Perry to take a coveted second place behind winner Lower, while George recovered most of the time lost to still retain third. All that was left was the final Snetterton double-header to settle the fate of the title, and Lower struck first with a lightning start, but by the final lap he’d slipped back to fourth place behind George, James and Lucas. He fought back on the final tour to lead at the final corners, but a mistake out of Murrays allowed George to sneak past at the death to steal victory from underneath him, as Lucas looked on in third.

Both George and Lower were then engaged in a thrilling four car fight for the win in the final race on Sunday, constantly swapping positions between them for the entire 20 minutes until the flag, where Lower swept across the line first to take the win and the White Group title in the process. We look forward to seeing how both of the Academy groups get on in 2022 as they move up into the Roadsport ranks!

The Comeback Kid Chris Jones’ ETSL ST-XR Challenge hopes were as dented as his car after qualifying for the opening race, but he bounced back in style, says Dave Williams.

The Comeback Kid Chris Jones’ ambitions to win the 2021 ETSL ST-XR Challenge were severely dented at the very start of the season, just like his Class D Fiesta ST, but he went on to clinch the title at the final round after a tough year of racing.

After being fast in testing, Jones headed into Croft’s opening double-header full of confidence. However, on his final flying lap during qualifying the nearside of his car was badly damaged when a slower car moved offline to allow Jones through only to lose control on a dirty area of the track and smack into him.

Jones didn’t think that the required repairs could be made in time for him to take part in either of the weekend’s races but others in the paddock had other ideas and set about making repairs. He repaid their hard work and optimism by getting his championship campaign off to the best possible start with two victories.

By the time the series moved on to Knockhill for the next three rounds, Michael Blackburn had the set up of his Fiesta ST right in the sweet spot which enabled him to set the fastest time in qualifying at this and the next three meetings, which was very impressive against such a competitive field.

He won the first race in Scotland too but during the rest of the weekend a couple of great starts allowed Chris Jones to add a brace of victories to his tally.

Surprisingly, this was the last time Jones would visit the top step of the podium until

the final race of the season as Blackburn won twice at Snetterton’s triple-header and was three-hundredths of a second away from a hat-trick but was pipped by Chris Grimes in a photo-finish.

Blackburn and Grimes were running close together in the first of three races at Cadwell Park, so close that they made contact. Grimes was out immediately while Blackburn retired a little later when a gearbox mounting bolt failed.

Lee Bowron seized the opportunity to take the laurels and also won Class D in race two although the XR2s of Simon Robinson and Alex Causer finished ahead of him. This was the only overall victory for a Class A car.

At Oulton Park’s double-header, Blackburn finished first on the road but a post-race penalty dropped him to fourth after the stewards ruled that he had only taken the lead thanks to a late lunge that forced Chris Jones aside. Lee Bowron inherited his third win of the season after a frantic contest.

Two races at Donington Park concluded the season. A mysterious handling problem blunted Blackburn’s pace so Chris Grimes was quickest in qualifying and won race one before Chris Jones coped best with the drizzly conditions of the final round and clinched the Class D and overall titles with a win.

The other class champions were Simon Robinson, who took Class A with his Fiesta XR2, Jason Hennefer, Class B with an Escort XR3i and John Spencer, Class C with the Fiesta Si.

As one of the major new partnerships that the BRSCC acquired and forged for the 2021 season, there was much anticipation to see just how the Modified Ford Series would progress in its first year of competition in association with the Club.

Conceived by racer Paul Nevill, a competitor in the series himself, the Modified Ford Series was designed to provide a home for any and all competitors wishing to race a Ford that was built no younger than 10 years ago or more.

Ultimately, it means an incredible breadth of variety across the board, with many Escorts, Sierras, Fiestas, Capris, Pumas and more taking to the track in support.

After the loss of the early BRSCC rounds due to Covid, the beginning of their season was at Lydden Hill, although the first event with the BRSCC came at Donington Park in May with a staggering array of nearly 40 cars turning up to compete. Ultimately the pace was dominated by the rapid Escort Cosworth of Dave Cockell and the wonderfully unique Subaru-engined Ford RS200 of Wayne Crabtree, and Cockell looked comfortable in the lead of race one until a gearstick problem forced him to stop late on. This put Crabtree in an unassailable lead, winning by 30 seconds ahead of Ashley Shelswell’s Sierra XR4i and Simon Light’s wild blue Capri. Even though Crabtree again led in the opening stages of race two, it only took mere minutes for Cockell to carve his way from 27th on the grid to the lead in an amazing display, eventually pulling out a further nine seconds to pick up the win.

Crabtree remained in the runner-up spot and Light’s Capri made it a brace of third places.

There followed a trip to Mallory Park before the second BRSCC event of the year at Anglesey, and despite a smaller field than Donington, that didn’t take away anything from the quality of the entry. Race one was an exciting affair as Cockell’s Escort Cosworth appeared to meet its match in Piers Grange’s Mk2 Escort, the pair going back and forth throughout before Grange incredibly came out on top, ahead of Shelswell’s Sierra in a distant third. However, Cockell’s pace was more than dominant in the second encounter, eventually succeeding by

more than 45 seconds ahead of Shelswell and Stuart Day’s red Escort Cosworth.

Cadwell Park with CMMC was next on their calendar, which was then followed by a one-day trip to Oulton Park for the BRSCC North Western Centre race day in August. It was once again a clear display of strength from Cockell, who pushed hard in both races to win, but wasn’t able to pull out the same large gaps as he had done before. His winning margins in both were no more than around three seconds, as Malcolm Harding and Ashley Shelswell picked up a second place each and Cockell’s Anglesey rival Piers Grange owned the third place podium step all day.

Over 50 Fords turned out for the Ford Power Live rounds at Brands Hatch, with so many cars wishing to race that the field had to be split into two groups. After four races on the Indy circuit, it was Cockell, Neil Jessop (Escort Mk2), Crabtree and James Harris (Escort Mk2) that all claimed a winner’s trophy apiece. Then came the final triple header at Snetterton to close off the season with more than 25 cars present to mark the occasion. Piers Grange, now in a Mk1 Escort RSR, clinched the honours for race one ahead of Shelswell’s Sierra and Jack Gadd’s own Mk1 RSR example, but it was race two that produced the weekend’s most memorable winner.

On a circuit notorious for favoring more powerful cars on the straights, it was James Harris’ potent little Escort Mk2 that took advantage of a first corner red flag and then rain catching several drivers out to run rings around them, taking an amazing overall race win from Grange in second and evergreen Rod Birley taking third in his mighty Escort WRC. In the dry of race three, it looked like it was going to be Birley’s race to lose, but a late mechanical issue forced him out leaving Gadd to pick up the win, but only by half a second after a late charge from Shelswell, with race two hero Harris managing to bag third.

After winning accolades for the quality of its grid and the overall caliber of the series, the Modified Ford Series will return in 2022 bigger, better and more popular than ever. Watch out for this one in the new season!

Track Attack!

The Track Attack Race Club was a popular addition to many BRSCC race meetings in 2021, says Scott Woodwiss.

The Track Attack Race Club had been a long-standing guest series with the BRSCC, appearing on many of its schedules over the last few years. For the 2021 season, a deal was struck between the BRSCC and Track Attack’s owner Steve Vince to become more closely aligned with the majority of its race programme for the year taking place on BRSCC race weekends.

Their first meeting of the season was at Mallory Park in late May, where the usual impressive variety of French and Japanese machinery took to the grid on the short 1.35mile circuit. The original plan had been to run the entry in three groups across three races, but unprecedented delays meant only two races could go ahead. The first for Groups A and B had Tony Hunter top the podium with a win in his Renault Clio, followed by two more driven by Robert Buckland and Nick Gwinnett.

The second race combined all three groups together after a lengthy delay, as Andrew Neal’s little Peugeot 106 Rallye charged through the now damp conditions to win from another pair of Clios, this time driven by David Mycock and Matthew Hollier.

Another one-day event came next at Oulton Park, where the regulars were joined for the first time by a number of cars from the Classic VW Cup, which had joined forces with Track Attack over the winter and were a very welcome addition to the grid. Race 1 had a pair of Peugeots at the front with Chris Southcott’s 205 ahead of Steve Simpson’s rapid 206, while Mike Nash rounded off the podium in his SEAT Supercopa. This top three was then repeated again in the second encounter, albeit with a smaller winning margin of just one second as Southcott made it a double.

A second visit to Oulton Park followed a couple of weeks later, but the next BRSCC appearance for Track Attack came at the Summer Festival at Snetterton in July. The first race was red-flagged in the final minutes due to a 206 GTi Production Cup car gently rolling, but at the time the leader had been another Classic VW Cup driver, Simon Tomlinson aboard his Golf. He won from Nick Gwinnett’s Clio and the incredible little Renault 5 GT Turbo of David Clark. Then in the wet conditions of race two, James Anderson shone in his Honda Civic to take victory ahead of race one winner Tomlinson and Mycock’s Clio in third.

Two more BRSCC meetings were left for Track Attack in 2021, starting at the short but intense Brands Hatch Indy circuit in August. If there was one man that appeared to have both races entirely under his control, it was Chris Bassett in his very pacey Peugeot 306 GTi. He pushed on to pick up both race wins, but

he was pressed on both occasions by Clark’s Renault 5 GT Turbo, managing to win by nearly eight seconds in the opener, but only two in the second. The Honda Civic of Rich Hockley and Tony Hunter’s Clio would also share a third place apiece.

The final appearance of 2021 with the BRSCC came at Cadwell Park in August, and the tight and twisty confines of the “miniNurburgring” turned out to be the domain of Rich Hockley, whose Honda Civic was untouchable all day. In both races, he was able to eek out a victory margin of just over six

seconds, both times ahead of the wild BMW Compact of David Shead in second place, while Classic VW Cup drivers Chris Adams (Golf) and Ken Lark (Corrado) split the third place silverware between them.

After this came the final two weekends for Track Attack at Castle Combe and Donington Park to conclude their 2021 season, and 2022 is shaping up to be even more popular with a class restructure and even more amazing machinery set to line up on the grid. For Steve Vince’s paddock, this could be one of their best years to date!

Plain Sailing Lee Plain was F250 National Champion as the British Superkart Championship returned for the first time since 2019.

After a gap of 12 months the British Superkart Championship was back on the racing calendar under the auspices of Motorsport UK, with assistance from Superkarting UK. The season was due to start at Cadwell Park in April, but this event was postponed until later in the year, so Mallory Park hosted the opening rounds in May. Although the entry was low, there was no shortage of action. Ross Allen (Division 1) and Tom Riley (F125 Open) were unbeaten in their respective classes.

Allen battled with Carl Kinsey in the opening race until the latter slowed with an engine misfire. Kinsey’s consolation was to set a new lap record of 111.91mph. Kirk Cattermole (F250 National) took a class win and could have had more but a spin in wet conditions and an accident with a back marker in the final race put him out. That paved the way for Lee Plain (F250 National) to take an early lead in the points table, a taste of things to come. A wrong tyre choice stopped Mark Gellatly (F450 National) from claiming a maximum score in his class.

The championship moved on to Anglesey in July where some of the big names in

Superkarts joined the series. Liam Morley was uncatchable in the Division 1 class and took three wins plus a new lap record for the International circuit. Five times British Superkart Champion Paul Platt opened his account with three wins in the F250 National class, while Mark Gellatly also picked up three wins in F450 National. The honours were shared in the F125 Open category with Tom Riley, Michael Parr and Mark Bramhall taking a win apiece.

And so to the final rounds at Cadwell Park in August. Liam Morley was absent in the Division 1 class, so it became Ross Allen’s championship to lose if he had mechanical issues. He made no mistakes with a second place in the opening race, which gave him sufficient points to claim the Division 1 title.

Sam Moss was the star of the class picking up two wins and a new outright lap record for the Lincolnshire circuit. It was a straight fight between Lee Plain and Paul Platt in F250 National. Platt collected his fourth class win of the series to close the gap but in the next race crashed heavily while chasing his rival.

That took the pressure off Plain who secured the British title in the F250 National category.

Mark Gellatly missed the Cadwell round having already wrapped up the F450 National class championship while Tom Riley had little trouble in taking the F125 Open prize with two more wins to secure the maximum championship points available.

There was a dramatic finale to the Motorsport UK British Superkart Grand Prix at Donington Park in September. Just after half-distance the race was red flagged due to a kart being stranded in an unsafe place. The race was re-started with four minutes showing on the clock. That meant a three-lap dash. Lee Harpham (Division 1) led away but nine-times GP winner Liam Morley was on his tail. Morley took the lead at Melbourne Hairpin on lap two and was heading for victory number 10. But Harpham outbraked him into Goddards for the final time and held on to win by 0.564s from Sam Moss as Morley’s engine cut out and he coasted across the line in eighth place. Paul Platt retained his GP title in the F250 National class, while Kevin Ridley added the GP plate to his ‘0’ plate in the F450 four stroke category.

Mark Bramhall overcame a major engine failure in an earlier heat to win the F125 Open class.

A successful launch in 2020, despite the external challenges the year brought, put the Nankang Tyre CityCar Cup Championship in a bright light heading into 2021 for its first full year as a championship. But even though the level of popularity was expected to be good going into the first weekend of the season at Donington Park, not even those within the championship or the BRSCC could quite believe what was about to happen.

What happened was a sensational turn out with a near capacity grid of 38 Citroen C1s, Peugeot 107s and Toyota Aygos, including over 20 rookie drivers competing for the Novice Trophy within the main championship points.

Carrying on the form he’d shown in the pilot races in 2020, Pickup Truck Racing champion Nic Grindrod dominated proceedings all day to win both races at a canter, doing so by an extraordinary 34 and then 17 seconds respectively! Podiums behind him were shared

by Stuart Bliss, Patrick Booth, Duncan Stone and Liam Browning, who were set to become regulars at the head of the field.

After Donington, Grindrod’s near domination of the championship commenced. First came an eventful first visit to Oulton Park, one of two on the calendar, with Nic picking up where he’d left off and increasing his victory tally to four as three more drivers claimed silverware too: Richard Bliss, Andrew Dyer and Ross Makar.

Nic’s winning margins weren’t as big this time and this would turn out to be a recurring theme with his rivals slowly but surely closing the gap to his pace. Next came a Donington return, but this time supporting the British GT Championship, something impressive for a championship only three race weekends old!

Another double for Grindrod came and went, but now his winning margin had been cut down further to less than seven seconds, as Browning, Dyer and Elliot Lettis led the charge after the points leader. This race also marked the racing debut of Fiesta Junior coordinator Laura Payne, who recovered well from damage in race one to finish the second unscathed.

Snetterton marked a turning point in the competition. While there was no change in who

the race winner would be, with Grindrod yet again adding another three race wins in the championship’s first triple-header, he would be put under a lot more pressure by the pursuing pack, with the third race having victory being sealed by less than a second from Makar and Richard Bliss, as Stone and Stuart Bliss were also trophy winners that weekend too.

Then came what seemed the unthinkable – someone other than Grindrod winning a race!

The return to Oulton Park wasn’t quite the meeting Nic had hoped for as a disqualification from race one and 12th in race two after getting caught up in incidents all day left teammate Duncan Stone leaving Cheshire with a brace of wins for himself and pushing him firmly into potential championship contention.

Further podiums were also shared between Browning, Dyer and the Bliss pair.

Onwards to two circuits that had key milestones in the CityCar Cup’s first year: Croft was next, where at the end of 2020 the first standalone races had been held. Another pair of top step visits beckoned for Grindrod, and this time his main pursuer was Steve Laidlaw’s Peugeot, who bagged two second places while the Bliss pair took a third each. With Stone and Richard Bliss still in loose contention to snatch the title, the contenders headed to where it all began the year before at Cadwell Park to conclude the season. An excellent start from pole gave Dyer a lead that he would practically never lose to collect his first CityCar win with Grindrod and Richard Bliss on his tail at the flag. Contact with Stuart Bliss denied Dyer the chance of a double in the final race, and Grindrod pressed on to pick up his 12th win of the year, firmly securing the accolade of the first ever CityCar Cup Championship.

Stone’s title chances halted after an incident which brought an early end to race one, and indeed Richard Bliss not only took runner up spot but also the Novice Racer title, while Stone would wrap up third in the standings instead. After an incredible first year and with the burgeoning Student Motorsport Challenge also set to add more new cars and teams onto the grid, 2022 is already looking to be even bigger and better!

Steven Dailly aimed for five in a row in the Nankang Tyre BMW Compact Cup Championship, as Scott Woodwiss witnessed.

Steven Dailly headed into the 2021 Nankang Tyre BMW Compact Cup Championship with the aim of claiming an unprecedented 5th consecutive title and just six race weekends in which to do so. Given his blistering form and consistency over the past seasons, many may have felt that it could have been a forgone conclusion, but 2021 proved that the competition had been working hard to catch up.

This was clear at the season opening races at Croft when Oliver Faller took the fight to Dailly and held him off the entire way to score a first win, with Steven locked to his bumper all the way and Ian Howes promoted to third place after on-road finisher Wayne Flint received a penalty. The top two would be reversed in the second race, as Dailly dominated drizzly conditions to win with Faller in P2 this time, and Ian Jones drove superbly from sixth on the grid to finish on the podium.

There was a rare home visit for Scotsman Dailly as the championship moved on to Knockhill, a replacement for the originally scheduled Anglesey rounds. Steven pulled away after an early safety car to take a first home win in race one and was even more dominant in the second as he took the flag by more than eight seconds. But with a random

top 10 grid draw for the third race, he had to come from the fifth row of the grid to make it a hat-trick. Getting held up fighting his way through meant he could only claim third, as Jones and Ben Huntley claimed an excellent 1-2 with Dailly right behind them come the end.

At the Summer Festival triple header at Snetterton, Dailly’s strong pace and momentum really kicked into gear as he would win all three, but while the first two races were fairly straightforward with wins in both ahead of Mikey Doble and Huntley both times, he was lucky to hold on to the third. In the first ever 30-minute race in Compact Cup history, both Dailly and Huntley were clear out in front when a sudden downpour in the final minutes caught several drivers out, including Dailly who survived three off-track excursions to win. The chequered flag was thrown early to avoid any serious incidents.

Thankfully, conditions were brighter at Cadwell Park in August, a weekend in which Dailly took a pair of wins. Both races were safety car affected, the first being a lengthy one after a first lap incident and the second scrambled in the latter stages. Maguire, Doble and Howes joined the points leader on the rostrum across the day, Maguire only a quarter of a second back at the flag in race two as he

confirmed a brace of second places.

Then came the first of two back-to-back trips to Donington Park, both of which would feature on the GP circuit. In a rare turn of events at the September visit, Dailly suffered mechanical problems that forced him to retire from race one leaving Doble to capture his first Compact Cup win ahead of Rhys Claydon and the returning Oliver Faller, but a true champion’s drive came in the second race for Steven as he charged to third behind double winner Doble and new Masters champ Maguire to provisionally hand him that incredible fifth Compact Cup title in a row. Plenty of course for celebration in the KC Motorsport camp!

The season finale return leg would be on the support timetable to the British GT Championship decider in October and rather than sit on the sidelines, Dailly decided to round off what could be his final Compact season with another textbook pair of victories.

After keeping Guy Davis at bay to pick up race one honours by just a second with Howes in third, Steven then dominated the final race to claim his 11th win of the season by seven seconds. A fitting way to conclude the year, the championship and potentially his time in it.

Of the BRSCC’s many new partnerships across the winter ahead of the 2021 season, one among them would see a connection built between it and the Aston Martin Owners’ Club, the largest and only official worldwide membership club for Aston Martin owners and enthusiasts. With a pedigree of racing spanning just over 85 years since the 1950s, AMOC has a long history of running its own series and race events and turned to the BRSCC to provide assistance with its motorsport programme for 2021.

The first AMOC races of the year took place at Donington Park in May, with both classic and modern machinery competing in their own separate races. On the historic side, the Jack Fairman Cup (for GTs and sports racing cars from the 1950s) and the Innes Ireland Cup (for GTs and touring cars built before 1966) shared a grid together for a 40-minute race with a mandatory pit stop. The polesitting Jaguar Lister Mk1 of Nigel Webb/Rob Newall had its race compromised immediately when the bonnet flew open just as the race began, forcing them to eventually finish four laps behind the overall winners. It was a pair of Lotuses that finished one-two and won their respective categories, with Rob Fenn’s beautiful little Lotus Elan winning overall and topping the Innes Ireland runners, while Ian Dalglish did the same in second overall with the Jack Fairman Cup in his Lotus 17.

In the Intermarque, GT and GT4 Challenge, the 50-minute pit stop race was dominated from start to finish by the gold Ferrari 458 of Nigel Jenkins who eventually won the race outright by over a minute from the secondplaced car. That car would be Jamie Sturges’ Volkswagen Golf TCR touring car, with Mark and Dale Albutt’s Aston Martin V8 Vantage GT4 rounding off the overall podium.

There would be more of the same for the modern cars at Snetterton with the Intermarque, GT & GT4 field reappearing once again at the Norfolk circuit, as part of the BRSCC’s Summer Festival race meeting.

It would be another day of Ferrari dominance once again, although this time it was the bright red Ferrari 488 Challenge racer of Roy Millington that was in control from the get-go.

The returning gold 458 of Jenkins made sure it was a 1-2 for the Maranello machines almost 30 seconds back, followed by Chris Griffin’s Aston Martin Vantage GT4 back in third.

The final AMOC races of the year took place at the 50th Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch in late October, with the regular 50-minute encounter split into two shorter 25-minute races. Rikki Cann’s vintage Aston Martin V8 Vantage picked up the spoils in race one ahead of Andy Thompson’s SEAT Toledo and Paul Whight’s Lotus Motorsport Elise, before Rob Fenn took over the Elise to win the second race from the Aston V8 Vantage pair of Samuel Wilson and Julian Reddyhough.

If there was one discipline of circuit racing missing on the BRSCC roster from the previous couple of seasons, it was sports prototype racing and after the unfortunate demise of the OSS Championship, an ambition of former series regular Duncan Williams and daughter Grace (who assumed the role of series coordinator) led to the formation of a brand new series.

Hence for 2021, a deal was signed with the BRSCC to bring sports prototypes back to the Club’s paddock in the shape of the new ZEO Prototype Cup. The premise was very much reminiscent of OSS, a wide range of classes catering to a vast array of eligible purpose-built race cars. With high speeds and fast pace guaranteed, it was set to be all action.

The new series began at a murky and damp Silverstone National circuit, where the front two cars drew away in their own private battle in race one. Duncan Williams wheeled out his striking black Norma LMP3 and dueled with Matt Manderson in the first race, with Manderson managing to use his Radical’s power advantage to take the victory from Williams, while OSS champ Mike Jenvey wheeled his Jenvey-Gunn TS6 to the final overall podium spot. Williams then saw his race end prematurely when a spin in the opening laps left him in the barriers with damage, and with Manderson also hitting problems himself it put Jenvey into a lead he wouldn’t lose. He dominated to win by over 30 seconds, with Graham Charman in second place in the Juno and Tony Freeman’s Radical SR10 in third place.

Next up came the short, sharp Brands Hatch Indy circuit in Kent for two more races and the first would see a great scrap between Jenvey and the Chiron of Charles Hall. Ultimately, two early safety cars broke

up proceedings, but when racing was allowed to properly commence Jenvey had to survive robust attempts from Hall to take the lead, but eventually succumbed with less than seven minutes left. Hall then drove away to win, leaving Jenvey to trail in second and Charman’s Juno rounding off the podium. The second encounter was more straightforward with Jenvey unchallenged in the lead and taking a lights-to-flag victory, although Hall managed to get close in the final laps and only missed out on the double by a second; Charman again took his Juno to another P3 behind them.

For the final two races of the inaugural ZEO season, the venue was Donington Park’s Grand Prix circuit, where amongst the biggest entry of the year came a welcome appearance from the Praga R1T of Chris Wesemael that had frequented throughout the year in Britcar.

Charles Hall quickly edged out fellow front row man Jenvey at the start and then kept him at arm’s length for the first half before Mike pitted with car troubles. It left Hall to take his second win in as many meetings ahead of Wesemael’s Praga and Matt Manderson, back in his Radical SR8 on this occasion. Thankfully, Jenvey’s car was back to full strength for the second race and he went into combat with Hall early on before the Chiron pulled away. A late safety car closed the pack up again, but despite this Hall went on to win on the road before a five second time penalty for track limits relegated him to third, promoting Jenvey to the win and Wesemael up into another second place.

The success of the ZEO Prototype Cup’s first season in 2021 puts it on firm ground to continue growing in 2022, where the calendar includes a trip to the Silverstone GP circuit which will certainly act as the centrepiece of its sophomore year.

50 Not Out After 49 previous editions full of action, drama and memorable moments, the 50th Formula Ford Festival last October was always going to have a lot to live up to, especially with such a big landmark reached in the event’s prestigious history.

The line up for the 50th absolutely befitted the occasion with 98 cars turning out to celebrate and compete in this milestone event, including former winners Jan Magnussen, Dennis Lind and Roberto Moreno.

On a damp circuit, Heat 1 sponsored by Presenta Connect got Saturday underway with Jamie Sharp getting a great jump to lead the way early on, while 2019 Festival champ Jonathan Browne diced with newly crowned National Formula Ford champion Chris Middlehurst behind. A mistake from Sharp allowed Browne to take over in front and despite the BM Racing driver managing to fend off Middlehurst’s advantage, he only just missed out on victory by a whisker as Browne pipped him by a tenth, with Team USA Scholarship driver Andre Castro in third.

Impressive youngster Tom Mills threw away a podium chance in Heat 2 sponsored by Raceparts through the gravel at Clearways after an early safety car, and it left Formula Ford stalwart Joey Foster to take his Firman to victory ahead of Matthew Cowley and Jack Wolfenden, after a red flag caused by Moreno brought an end to the race early.

Max Esterson drove a calm race out in front in Heat 3 sponsored by AGM Plumbing & Heating to ensure a straightforward path into the semi-finals, managing to resist race long pressure from Oliver White to the flag.

The winning margin was just under two-tenths, while double Walter Hayes Trophy winner Michael Moyers began his first ever Festival with an excellent third place finish another 2.5 seconds back. It was another pair of former winners on the front row for Heat 4 sponsored

by Downforce Radio, as Rory Smith and Niall Murray led the pack away with Murray claiming the lead just corners into the start. In the most ominous performance of the heats, Murray remained unchallenged to the flag, victorious by 3.5 seconds while Neil MacLennan bagged P2 ahead of Rory Smith, who fought back from slipping down the pack early on.

To ensure every competitor had the chance of at least two races over the weekend, a pair of Progression Races sponsored by Ford Performance rounded off Saturday’s action, with the top six in each completing the 60 cars that would move on to Sunday’s racing. The first Progression Race had one of the drives of the weekend, as Michael Gray stormed his way through from last on the grid to take an emphatic victory admired by all. He punched his ticket to the semis ahead of Chris Hodgen and Philip Harris, the latter benefitting from a time penalty for the man third on the road, Daryl De-Leon Taylor. Meanwhile, Jack Kemp’s efforts in the second Progression Race meant he had zero pressure on his way to the win, beating Adam Fathers by just over six seconds with James Hagan in P3.

Heavy rains led to a delay to the semi finals on Sunday morning after the main access tunnel became partially flooded, but once racing could get underway another sudden downpour hit the start of Semi Final 1 sponsored by Avon Tyres. MacLennan leapt into the lead as he split front row men Murray and Browne, but lost the lead to Murray again after an early safety car as the Irishman mastered the wet conditions to win, while MacLennan took second and Sharp came out on top of a duel with Browne to claim the final podium place. With the track drying quickly, Semi Final 2 sponsored by Quantum Racing Suspension was always likely to be the faster of the two races. Foster beat Esterson away from the front row and proceeded to control the race from the lead, as he was never headed and won by more than three seconds. Mills and White, meanwhile, dueled all race long over second place and White only snatched P2 in the closing stages to deny the son of team boss Kevin Mills the runner up step.

For the very first time, the Historic Final sponsored by Azets would see the winner presented with a brand new accolade – the Brian Jones Memorial Trophy commissioned in honour of the “Voice of Brands Hatch” who passed away at the turn of the new year. With a full 30-car grid lining up, one fell by the wayside early as Roberto Moreno’s Festival ended in the Paddock Hill Bend gravel. Alan Davidson ran off in front after the initial safety car, but threw the lead away through the gravel

at Clearways and after another SC interruption, it was Matt Rivett who worked his way into the lead, eventually leaving his rivals to scrap for the podium places as he charged to the Historic win by almost three seconds. Young Irish racer Brandon McCaughan took a fine second place ahead of the vastly experienced Chris Goodwin, who was delighted with third.

After Luke Cooper led home the top six in the Last Chance Race to fill the remaining spots on the grid, the field was set for what would eventually turn out to be one of the greatest Festival finals in the event’s history.

Right from the off, Murray and Foster went into combat at the front, the two multi-time Festival winners locking horns with White and MacLennan to form an initial breakaway lead group. However, the race was turned on its head when Murray and White tangled before Druids, collecting the innocent Tom Mills to put all three out of the Final. The safety car was scrambled with Foster leading, but the race still had one or two twists left to play out.

Foster tried to escape second-placed Jamie Sharp on the restart, but just a few moments later Joey spun at Clearways leaving the BM Racing driver in the lead. MacLennan and Esterson were hot on his tail, but while MacLennan managed to pass Sharp at Druids a couple of laps later, the move would come back to haunt him. Sharp managed to repass in the closing stages with an ever increasing train of cars forming behind them, but Jamie stayed firm and resisted all the pressure to take an incredible Festival win. MacLennan finished second on the road, but his move on Sharp had taken place in a yellow flag zone, thus leading to his post-race disqualification and promoting Esterson up to second and fellow Team USA driver Andre Castro to third.

Sharp was also presented with the John Nicol Trophy and Roger Pedrick Trophy after being selected as the best British and English driver in the Final respectively.

The 2021 edition of the Festival was certainly one to remember and it reignited the passion many motorsport fans have for the event and Formula Ford as a whole. This momentum looks set to carry over into 2022 where we can look forward to a 51st edition just as spectacular, well-supported and entertaining at Brands Hatch in October!

Part of the 50th Formula Ford Festival weekend celebrations was a special anniversary dinner held on the Friday evening at the Mercure Brands Hatch hotel. The evening was hosted by Ben Edwards and featured guest speakers Jan Magnussen, Rick Morris, Roberto Moreno and more. A fun and enjoyable evening was had by all in attendance, featuring many notable Formula Ford names from the past few decades, and it was the perfect way to kick off the event before racing got underway on Saturday.

For the first time ever in 2021, the British Racing & Sports Car Club was entrusted with the running and organizing of the popular Race of Remembrance at the Anglesey circuit in Wales, an event created

by Mission Motorsport that has been run every year since 2014 (with the exception of 2020 due to COVID-19) on Remembrance Sunday weekend to remember those who gave their lives in armed conflict over the years, as well as raise money for those affected in active service.

The event centres around the Remembrance Sunday service with a threepart endurance race taking place over the weekend, spanning 12 hours in total. The race starts on the Saturday, pauses in darkness, resumes on Sunday morning before pausing again for the all-important Remembrance service, and then continues until the conclusion when the cumulative 12 hours has elapsed.

Mission Motorsport is a charity that first began back in 2012 when it was launched to help those affected by military operations by engagement through sport, providing them with avenues and opportunities to “race, retrain and recover” as their tag line states. Since they started, Mission Motorsport has helped more than 2000 veterans find work through their programmes and is supported by the Royal Foundation and Endeavour Fund. Many of those who have benefitted from Mission Motorsport’s assistance and support now find themselves in new careers in the motorsport and automotive sectors, allowing them to find a new way of life after leaving military service.

For the 2021 edition, there were a number of special events held prior to the main race itself, including an online iRace of Remembrance held on the iRacing sim

racing platform, a charity karting race and the amusing Biathlon of Foolishness where teams nominate a member to take part in a half mile jog, before descending down a cliff to take a quick dip in the Irish Sea and then taking on further exercises required of them by drill sergeants in the paddock. All in all, these extra activities help add to the spectacle and the grandeur of the event whilst also raising money for a very worthy cause.

In the race itself, the entry was the biggest they’d ever had at some 53 cars, proving just how popular and loved the event is, especially after its absence the year before. The Lotus Elise of Rob Boston and Peter Mansfield took pole position, almost three seconds clear from the rest of the field as they topped both sessions. From the off, the Lotus was a dominant force as they managed to put at least one lap on the entire field by the end of the first hour, with their nearest challenger turning out to be the RKC Motorsport Honda Civic of Ricky Coomber, Zachary Lucas and Harry Ormerod a lap back in the early hours. The lead briefly changed hands when the Solo64 Caterham 270R of Lee Bristow, Will Rossetti and Giuseppe Felet took over in front as the RBR Lotus suffered penalties and a brake issue.

Nevertheless, Boston and Mansfield still managed to end the first part of the race in the lead when it was halted on Saturday evening, and after overnight repairs the Elise took full advantage of its better fuel economy to maintain its place at the head of the field, keeping the Solo 64 Caterham at bay by a lap’s lead to claim overall victory. The Solo64 team took second place, three laps ahead of another Caterham trio of Rocket Racing with Steve McCulley, Don Henshall and Andy Perry at the wheel who claimed third overall.

What’s New, ‘22?

There’s plenty of new thrills coming from the BRSCC in 2022.

BRSCC Supersport Endurance Cup Following on from the overwhelming success of the Clubsport Trophy, a pilot race was run at Snetterton in July for a new, longer format club endurance series run to the same ethos.

Dubbed the Supersport Endurance Cup, two more development races will be run at Brands Hatch in June and August with the plan to run a full calendar of events in 2023. The class structure is again based on “true” power to weight ratio with a cap of 310bhp per tonne as the limit. July’s race saw an excellent mix of cars from Porsche Caymans and Lotus Exiges, to Honda Civics, BMWs and Mazda MX-5s and a similar range of machines is expected both times this year.

An exciting new addition to the BRSCC roster is the new partnership with the incredibly successful and popular C1 Racing Club, which brings the endurance series across for the very first time. Under the ownership of Robin Welsh and RAW Motorsport since early 2021, the series has elected to join forces with the BRSCC for 2022 and beyond and thus the series will compete on seven of the club’s race meetings this year, including the showpiece event of its campaign, the C1 24 Hour race on the Silverstone GP circuit. Alongside that, races will be between three and five hours in length and will include an “Into The Night” race at Anglesey in June. We’re thrilled that Robin and his team have come on board with us and we’re greatly looking forward to seeing this series perform this season!

In recent years, the BRSCC’s ever-popular Mazda MX-5 programme has continued to grow substantially. For 2021, a new MX-5 Clubman Championship was introduced for the Mk1 generation cars to cater to those drivers that preferred the logistics and value of qualifying and racing over one day. It proved popular and looks set to be in good health in 2022. Alongside that, the MX-5 SuperCup numbers were booming, so much so that some rounds had entry numbers into reserves. So, to cater to this and to also add a second racing option for Mk3s, the MX-5 SuperCup Clubman Championship was created with the same one-day, two-race format. With SuperCup numbers expected to be bigger than they’ve ever been in 2022, we’re anticipating that this new championship will prove just as popular as its Mk1 counterpart.

2022 marks the 10th anniversary of the Fiesta Junior Championship and with it comes the beginning of a new era, as this year we will introduce a brand new junior race car.

This has been devised and developed in conjunction with Cooksport Performance and its boss, BTCC star Josh Cook, who has been instrumental in the work carried out to put together this new car. Based on the Mk7 Ford Fiesta Zetec S, the entire package has been constructed to ensure a cost-effective, safe, competitive and level playing field across the board and to provide a suitable facelift to a championship that has become a key stepping stone for junior drivers out of karting, short oval racing, autograss or otherwise. The car will debut in the championship in 2022 alongside the existing Mk6 ST150 cars, turning FJC into the first ever multi-class, multi-car junior series in the UK. This project has garnered momentum and interest very quickly since the car made its public debut at MotorsportDays LIVE in November. Watch out for more to pop up on the grid as the year passes!

BMW 1 Series SuperCup (left) In a project that saw more than a year’s worth of background work and development, the BRSCC proudly launched the new BMW 1 Series SuperCup in the winter of 2021 with a view to beginning as a series in 2022.

Based on the popular BMW F20/F21 1.6 N13-engined model, the new car and race series will appeal to drivers attracted to racing in a tightly controlled single make series based on a modern and sophisticated rear wheel drive BMW. Race cars will be based on three or five-door BMW F20/F21 models (MY 2011-2015 114/116/118* pre-facelift) fitted with six-speed manual or eight-speed ZF Auto gearbox. With the aim to run the 1 Series SuperCup as a standalone grid over the next few years, the series will run on the same grid as the Clubsport Trophy in 2022 to allow it to grow, eventually featuring enough cars to move towards its own grids going forwards. There’s been some amazing interest so far and we anticipate it’s only going to increase!
